I think a cron job checking the output of df could do that.
The shell script will check if there is enough space to create a snapshot
otherwise remove a snapshot.

How about that?

Raid0 with btrfs

Hi all,

I want to make a btrfs raid0 on 2 partitions of my pc.
Until now I am using the mdadm tools to make a software raid of the 2
partitions /dev/sde2, /dev/sdd2
and then mkfs.etx4 the newly created /dev/md0 device.
>From performance point of view is it better to keep the configuration of mdadm
and just format the /dev/md0 device as btrfs OR
delete the raid device and format the 2 partitions /dev/sde2 /dev/sdd2
as a btrfs with 2 devices?
mkfs.btrfs /dev/sde2 /dev/sdd2

On a sidenote:
If I decide to go for raid5 which is not supported currently from mkfs
I have to use the mdadm tool anyway, right?

Do I have to change the partition ID flag of each partition?
Currently is set to fd (Linux Raid autodetect) for used from mdadm
mkfs.btrfs supports that or needs to be 83 (Linux) ?

Using raid0 for data and metadata
# mkfs.btrfs -m raid0 -d raid0 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd2 /dev/sde2

2 SATA and 1 ATA drive
I thought that ATA will bottleneck the other 2 drives but seems like I gain
something from it.
Using iozone for benchmark:
# iozone -s 8g -r 1024 -i 0 -i 1
with 2 SATA devices and then 3 devices (SATA + ATA):
KB  reclen  write   rewrite   read reread
83886081024  134869  139607   229146   228800
83886081024  135151  139050   233461   235929

The above is with -o compress option enabled and my cpu topped up on
100% cpu (both cores) while test and copy huge data.
Is it possible I am bottlenecked by my cpu speed?
AMD Opteron 165 @ 2700 Mhz

eliminate any caching?

btrfs filesystem df not working

The above command is not working on my system.
Information:
btrfs f df /media/data

Btrfs v0.19-35-g1b444cd

Linux woofy 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Fri Sep 17 21:50:19 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

mount info:
/dev/sdd2 on /media/data type btrfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
/media/data is a raid 0 filesystem

$ btrfs filesystem show
failed to read /dev/sr0
Label: none  uuid: 1882b025-58e4-4287-98a3-9b772af0ad76
Total devices 2 FS bytes used 72.56GB
devid2 size 74.53GB used 54.01GB path /dev/sdd2
devid3 size 74.53GB used 54.01GB path /dev/sde2

Any ideas?
This is on an testing/unstable Debian system.

So in debian squeeze/unstable which is currently on 2.6.32 (and won't
change any sooner) I cannot use btrfs. All I can do is try
experimental kernels?
My question though is, if I use experimental kernels can I then load
an "old" kernel and still use the btrfs filesystem?
Or the newer kernels write anything specials on ionodes which the old
ones cannot read?

Hi there,

I've been trying to install your kernel into my debian squezze/sid
system for test the new features of btrfs with failure so far.
My problem is that I have a 2.6.32 kernel and recent changes affecting
the btrfs system is not implemented so your repo seems like a
life-savior.

The only thing is that I am not able to fetch it.
I always stuck to
fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly

Also I wouldn't mind updating the kernel to newer ones although I am
not able to find any repositories with .deb files for 2.6.32 and
above. The only choise so far is experimental 2.6.36 repo which seems
to work but I don't have the linux-kbuild for installing the headers.
Thus the idea of building one myself.
Any suggestion of how to get the new changes of btrfs on my linux-box
would be welcome.

mount problem

I have a weird error with my RAID 0 btrfs partition.
Information for the partitions follow:

Thanks both for the answers, so as I can see I have 2 options:
Either find the startup scripts of Arch Linux and run the scan command
before parsing fstab (this should be in /etc/rc.conf ?)
OR
edit fstab with parameters the correct devices like:
 /dev/disk/by-uuid/1882b025-58e4-4287-98a3-9b772af0ad76  /media/data
btrfs   device=/dev/sde2,device=/dev/sdd2,rw,user 0 0

I think though that the devices names are randomly chosen in startup
from udev, right?
(this is the reason I use uuids)
so effectivly i have just an option.

I searched around and after consulting with #archlinux irc channel the
best way to do that is to add a hook in mkinitcpio.

This tool already has a btrfs hook current version so simply add it
before filesystem hook and recreate the initramfs

For my stock kernel: mkinitcpio -p kernel26

Worked fine.

Recommended settings for SSD

Hello list,

I just got myself a new SSD and decided to install yet another time
btrfs with ubuntu 13.04. I would like to ask if you suggest anything
for recommended options for mount on Crucial S4 SSD.

At the moment I am using:
defaults,noatime,nodiratime,ssd,subvol=@home

Anything else someone recommends for performance, stability?

It mainly depends on your hardware I think.

Since I am going to build the kernel and it's a good test on the SSD
does anyone recommend some ways to speed up the build related to SSD?

I see you are using compression. I don't have compression at the
moment and I would like to use it. What will happen to the data that
are already on the partitions? Will it be compressed when I use them?
Do I have to re-write them? Would it be compressed with btrfs defrag
command?

I tried to my home partition the 'find' command and worked without
errors, not sure if it did compress (how can I check?). I tried also
on the root partition and every file that was in use (obviously) it
didn't defrag it. I am guessing I have to mount the partition from a
LiveCD but since the LiceCD kernel is usually old (in terms of btrfs)
do you reckon there will be any problems?

Slow mounting raid1

Hello,

I got a raid1 setup of btrfs on a HDD array of 2 disks. The fstab has
the following mount settings:
  # cat /etc/fstab | grep raid1
  UUID=c9db91e6-0ba8-4ae6-b471-8fd4ff7ee72d /media/raid1 btrfs 
rw,relatime,compress=lzo,space_cache 0 0

When I try to mount the array it's consistent about 5 seconds+
  # time umount /media/raid1
  
  real0m0.358s
  user0m0.010s
  sys 0m0.010s
  # time mount /media/raid1
  
  real0m5.605s
  user0m0.504s
  sys 0m0.071s

I have this setup for sometime now and from the time I made it the mount
time went up (I notice that on boot). When I first build that was
almost instant. In terms of maintenance I regularly run a scrub and
rebalance every now and then.

Running kernel 4.11.12 (with -ck patchs)

Is there something I can do to speed it up (apart buying 2 SSDs :D ). I
feel like I'm missing something as the usage of the raid is not really
frequent - just backup mainly.

I don't I'm on this case:

Down to 3.7 sec
  # time umount /media/raid1 && time mount /media/raid1/

I think maybe the next step is to disable compression if I want to mount
it faster. Is this normal for BTRFS that performance would degrade after

Unable to open ctree

I'm a everyday user of btrfs. The system is a laptop with UEFI partition
and the following partition scheme:

The partitions are surely not out of space:

x86_64 GNU/Linux

# btrfs --version

As this is the root partition I am not able to access it without a
liveCD. Can I perform any kind of steps to recaclulate checksums?

I agree that the wear in SSDs due to metadata dublications is
overestimated and since my partition appears to be screwed I will make
sure next time to force it to have another copy there.

Hello,

After the command to rebuild the extent tree
# btrfs check --init-extent-tree --repair /dev/sda3

I was able to mount and run successfully a scrub (not sure if it would
detect something though).

Next was reboot and try to boot which was successful as well.

I'll keep an eye on the dmesh log next days but seems it's ok.

If you manage to mount the disk in a newer kernel and btrfs progs try
creating a new file system to take advantage of the new feature (on
creation) - then migrate the data and follow the recommendations
mentioned already.

"No space left on device"

Hello,

I've been following this list for years and I see during various situations
this message coming up. Some times it's a genuine problem that there is
actually not enough space. In other cases it's some by-product of something
else. I have seen this error personality on a broken system ( which I never
figured out what had happened).
I know this is still experimental but I just want to make sure my
expectations are not really out on sync with the others.

As an end user when I see an error like this the first thing I will do is
check the space (using 'df' command) [1]. If I see more that 7% I usually
think it's OK, (depends on the size of partition as well).

- Is this unreasonable in btrfs filesystem? Is there a formula to calculate
how much space btrfs _might_ need?
- It's probably not your job but can df reports correct sizes for btrfs?
I've seen some threads on trying to show the actual space occupied by data
and/or metadata with btrfs command. Can we expect this someone to be
incorporated into df command?
- In cases that btrfs reports this error but there's something else that's
causing it, can we expect better error handling from btrfs so the end user
is pointed to the correct direction?

[1]: one could argue that an end user should use the btrfs commands instead
but let's leave that for now.

Apologies if these have already been answered or are already on roadmap.

btrfs balance on single device

Hey all,

Just did a btrfs balance on a single device. Before the balance
operation here is the df result:

inglor@tiamat ~$ btrfs fi df /home
Data: total=19.19GB, used=9.34GB
System, DUP: total=32.00MB, used=4.00KB
Metadata, DUP: total=896.00MB, used=227.98MB

Then I issues a balance operation relocating the chunks across a single device:
inglor@tiamat ~$ sudo btrfs fi balance /home
[sudo] password for inglor:
Done, had to relocate 28 out of 28 chunks

After I did another df:
inglor@tiamat ~$ btrfs fi df /home
Data: total=10.00GB, used=9.34GB
System, DUP: total=32.00MB, used=4.00KB
Metadata, DUP: total=384.00MB, used=226.80MB

Anyone can explain me the Data row of the above output ? It used to be
19.19GB and now it's 10.00GB. It's like the partition shrunk!? The
balance operation finished without issues.

Here's some other information:

But on the time that someone invokes the "btrfs fi df" command all the
informations are available on the underlying driver to determine the
type of allocation (DUP or SINGLE) and if the volume is single or multi
device. So is there a reason not to do the maths for the user and
present her/him with the correct information, saving her/his braincells
from maths? :)

I assume there's performance degragation from having all the chunks
allocated in a volume. Is there a recomendation on how often once should
run the balance operation? If on the other hand no performance is
decreased from having all the chunks allocated why not allocate them on
the start (creation of filesystem / mount - not sure which is
appropriate).

I'm trying to do some maintenance to the system running over a btrfs file 
system on root (/). I started a balance on the '/' partition and it failed with 
the below information:
$ sudo btrfs balance start /
[sudo] password for inglor:
ERROR: error during balancing '/' - No space left on device
There may be more info in syslog - try dmesg | tail
$ dmesg | tail

Does it really needs more than 5.7GB to do a balance? I though it suppose to 
move chunks one by one and considering the chunks for Data is 1GB and for 
MetaData 512MB (256 x2 for dublication) it should be more than enough.
Also I had less space before and the dmesg reported 7 enospc errors. With 
cleaning a bit of packages installed now it reports only 1 enospc. Is that 
anywhere relevant?

Will this help with apt-get performance over btrfs file system? As far as I 
understand it it's happening because of multiple fsync calls.

Some progress on this. I managed to do a balance on data only. The
problem seems to be happening when doing a metadata balance

$ sudo btrfs balance start -m /

Hey all,

I run into no space left on device on a virtualbox

After installing Debian 6 on a virtual machine
I tried installing the KDE desktop

The system HDD is 8Gb
Both root (/) and /home are btrfs
over LVM.

While installing the packages I run into:

no space left, need 4096, 4096 dealloc bytes, 1776283648 bytes_used, 0
bytes_reserved,
0 bytes_pinned, 0 bytes_readonly, 0 may use 1776287744 total

df shows only 74% used space on /

kernel used: stock debian 6 2.6.32-5-686

At the moment I cannot access it with normal boot, only recovery mode.

I can provide whatever info you would like as long as you think of a
way to load the normal system and not the recovery mode.

Hey all,

Thanks for all the answers.

The problem is that I cannot login to the system.only recovery mode works,
and there btrfs command is not there as you imagined.

I will try though ssh but I don't think it's installed by default and I
cannot install it.

So the next step is try from recovery console of debian live cd, which still
has the really old tools...

I think this is quite some serious issue but generally all debian's fault
adopting a btrfs file system support on a 2.6.32 kernel and without
btrfs-progs on some decent version.

I'll update when possible.
Please throw any other alternatives my way anyone.

Well you are right it is my problem and yeah I wanted to test the "new
shiny" Debian 6 with
officially btrfs supported.

For the moment I apt-get clean to get some space since my / was
updating the KDE (so it had a lot of cache files there)
Reserved something like 300Mb and then vlextend the /

But the next step is to update kernel and btrfs-progs from git.

TRIM support

Hello,

I just installed an archlinux with btrfs root partition and would like
to set the correct mount properties
Following this:

it says there that I should use the discard mount parameter to enable TRIM.

I would like to ask by using ssd mount parameter would TRIM be enabled?
The SSD is Intel 320 Series 120Gb

Hey Hubert,

Thanks for the suggestions
I think I am using the wrong format for the patch.
Can you confirm that the patch file named rem.diff should be like the
one I attach on the email?

I get the same error when trying git apply on both integrations:
git apply ../rem.diff
error: patch failed: mkfs.c:1060
error: mkfs.c: patch does not apply
error: patch failed: volumes.c:888
error: volumes.c: patch does not apply

I finally got it to compile the integration-20110626 by manually
finding the four lines and deleting them.

Also the only viable option for now is fstrim? What is fstrim does
that kernel cannot?
I thought the TRIM was included as from kernel 2.6.29, no ?

Ccache on btrfs

Hi 

Is there an issue with btrfs ccache and multiple threads during compilation? 
I'm experiencing kernel panics while building Linux kernel on a btrfs system 
with -j8 and ccache enabled. Google suggest there was some issue on earlier 
kernels but my kernel is 3.16+

Anyone can confirm?

Interesting, I re-enabled ccache on an ext4 partition (HDD) and worked
fine. So I suspect it's something to do with btrfs and SSD. My mount
options are:
/dev/sda3 on /home type btrfs (rw,relatime,ssd,discard,nospace_cache)

The problem is that I can't get hold of kernel panic since it's not in
the journal [1]. I don't know a way to get hold of the kernel panic log
to help anyway.

What would it be useful to debug it?

I noticed you have the FS mounted with compress flag (compress=lzo).
Could it be that your CPU is bottle-necking the process?

btrfs-progs repository

Hello,

Why the official repository is not updated with the latest patched for gcc 4.6?
I noticed that http://git.darksatanic.net/repo/btrfs-progs-unstable.git/
includes more patches than the
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mason/btrfs-progs-unstable.git

So I was wondering is it some kind of testing to be done on patches to
be included into the official repo?
Another thing is that there are commands for creating the build
enviroment for fedora and debian but I found nowhere in the wiki the
dependencies of the btrfs-progs to compile them.
Shouldn't be a list of packages or dependencies for it?

The only reason for me to search the mailing list for an alternative
repository (and I send the message after) was because with the latest
stable gcc 4.6 it doesn't compile due to some unused variables
(WARNINGS) so your repository seems to compile fine.
I wasn't after some cool new untested feature tbh, just the latest
btrfs. Would be cool to update it.

I would be happy to update the wiki if I knew the dependencies :P
And I don't know what you mean with the patched to userspace tools,
sorry for my naiveness.
(even If I make a patch I don't know how to actually produce the
standartize patch mails I see on the mailing list, but that's out of
the mailing list question; would be grateful in an off-the-list email
with instructions).

No idea and when I searched on Arch linux for those packages didn't
find any with that name, should be under another package.

No I cannot reproduce it intentionally, it was quite random, while
playing something in the SMPlayer - think it was a movie. The movie
kept playing, and I can start programs (that was on the memory I
assume), couldn't access the FS at all. ls failed for example.
So I just hard-reboot and hoped all was alright.

So far I didn't see any problems after that.

I am doing a backup of my current data as I write this mail (hopefully
it will finish without IO errors).
Will it help if I print the btrfs tree and post it somewhere?

I mean, since the system is funcionable, it could be useful to track
down the bug, no?

Do we have an update to this? If not is it possible to ask a db dump
and make a temporary wiki live somewhere else until the kernel.org is
fully operational again?

I just cloned the repo and compiled it without problems on an
up-to-date Archlinux x86-64 system

As far as dependencies the only one needed is: libuuid
Quoting the INSTALL file:
...
The Btrfs utility programs require libuuid to build.  This can be
found in the e2fsprogs sources, and is usually available as libuuid or
e2fsprogs-devel from various distros.
...

As for the xattr.h file I searched my system and I am guessing my
compilation it's using the file located in /usr/include/attr/xattr.h
(because I got multiple ones in different locations)
This seems to be coming from attr package.
pkgfile /usr/include/attr/xattr.h
core/attr

But searching for this file outside that path it seems like the
linux-headers contain it as well.
So it could be a solution to use the one from the headers?

Maybe someone else can light a bit more some corners of my procedure. :)
