I've discovered yesterday that promise controllers have some
incompatibilities with Maxtor drives. Can you suggest another udma66
or udma100 controller? (i don't need RAID).

even the noisiest hard disks aren't really that noisy ... by
themselves. however, when you bolt them to a case, they get really
noisy because cases amplify the sound. that's why i have my disks
floating on foam rubber, unbolted. this makes a huge difference,
especially with scsi disks. i used to be able to hear cronjobs
starting up while sitting on the toliet, which is a couple rooms
removed from the machine in question. ( / is on a cheetah, though the
worst disk is an st32550). now i here more hard disk noise from my
ancient laptop/firewall. i have to be careful when moving the machine,
but honestly, how often does one move a tower?

g.m.

p.s. thermistor controlled fans are a plus, too.

So each file begins with the job number. Find the number for one of
these jobs, and then look at the *converted and *filtered ones. The
filtered data is what gets sent to the printer; it's the result from
after the filter_exec{} clause, where Ghostscript is. The converted
one is from after the convert_exec{} clause, if any.

The *driver_filter one is the actual filter run on the job. One
possible problem is some sort of syntax error in this due to a bug in
my filter writer code, so I should look at that too. Of course, I
really don't see one, and it works for other people...

The *driver_convert one is the filter that turns your input into
Postscript. If you printed a plain text file, this would be
something, and the *converted file would be a Postscript version of
your text job in *raw.

Anyway, mail me your raw, converted, filtered, and printrc driver
clause and I'll see if I can reproduce this here.

The latest stable, public release is at http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/

The latest CVS development code is on sourceforge. But the 6.01 code
will be fine; use that.

I went through the exact same thing with i810 I and
another guy on another newsgroup had bad experiences
with the Macmillian "flavor" of the kernel. I have recently
installed Mandrake 7.0 from the current issue of Maximum
linux and it worked like a charm, so beware of the Macmillian
version. So a nonstandard "patch" can make agpgart rebuild
throw up on a 2.2 kernel.

There's patch for the onboard ncr710 (included in the 2.2.14)

http://www.sleepie.demon.co.uk/ncr53c710/

Any chance that somone tell me how to have a network
card work on this machine?
I posted few days ago asking how to make my EISA intel etherexpress hub (82596)
work...
I once succeeded in installing redhat 6.0 with an ISAne2k
but it no longer works, i just get lost interrupts!

I agree. Go for an altogether non-PC architecture.

I was getting really interested in the Netwinder (see
http://www.rebel.com or http://www.netwinder.org), but then I realized
that it has no floating point unit, as well as some other smaller
problems, like a noisy fan.

I would be interested in hearing about other non-PC Linux boxes.

My stock answers:

Try the X Server from Precision Insight (
http://www.precisioninsight.com ).

The file you want is named XFCom-i740-glibc-1.1.0-1.i386 located here:
ftp://ftp.precisioninsight.com/pub/pi/XFCom/XFCom-i740-glibc-1.1.0-1.i386.rpm

also get:
 ftp://ftp.precisioninsight.com/pub/pi/XFCom/xf86config-glibc-1.1.0.i386.tgz

Follow the instructions after decompressing the .tgz file. The .rpm
file
should install correctly. I had marginal success with the "automatic"
XF86Config created, and had to hand-edit some modelines.

I only disabled one port in the setup utility (that's the one that you
enter when booting by pressing F2). That was COM2, which I assume

Hi everyone,

I have installed RedHat 5.2 according to the book, and now I want to upgrade
to XFree 3.3.3.1. I downloaded and installed the following RPMs:

XFree86-3.3.3.1
XFree86-SVGA
XFree86-VGA16
XFree86-libs
XFree86-XF86Setup
XFree86-75dpi-fonts

When I select my STB nVidia card and hit OK in Xconfigurator, I get a
segmentation fault. Is the problem that I'm using Xconfigurator? Do I need
to be using XF86Setup instead? And if not, are there any other packages
that I need before I can configure XFree86 3.3.3.1?

Thanks,

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a fast machine for scientific calculation pourposes.
For some constraints I'm looking to an Intel platform, so I cannot go
Alpha.

The idea is to buy a dual pentium II machine ( Dell Workstaion series
210 ).

The problem is this: will Linux support this machine?

What matherboard chipset/BIOS is supported for SMP?

Is there any standard for SMP motherboards?

Any information about SMP motherboards/BIOSes is welcome.

Thanks very much.
