Don't know Freddy. I've run the WinTV card on a Pentium MMX233, STB
Velocity 128 video card w/8 meg vid memory and 320 ram, on an AMD K-6
2/550, and currently on an AMD K-7 Duron 700 MHz. All three have been on
plain vanilla mother boards, VIA and ALI chip sets, with frame buffer
enabled in kernel compiles from 2.2. 10(Ithink that was RH 6,1's out of the
box kernel) all the way up through all the 2.3.x kernels and now on the
2.4.3 with excellent results except on occasion when I try to run too on
color vga console prior to going into X I will get a loss of colors with
really color intensive applications. Particularly with Mandrake 7.2.
I've not run any DVD stuff under Linux, but otherwise all my streaming
video, for example captures with the connectrix vid cam and some of the
experimental v4l stuff and it's all pretty crisp, clear and real time. DVD
under Win98 is and has been excellent on all the configurations except when
I dropped below 124 meg of ram on a couple of installs.
Cheap as memory is now, I think I'd venture a little on that direction to
see what kind of results you get .

Where'd you get that idea? Lose9x can handle more than one primary
partition just fine *IFF* there's only one primary FAT partition. The
other primary partitions have to be ext2, BSD, ReiserFS, Amoeba...
anything but the codes used for FAT and NTFS types. A stock Lose9x
installation will completely ignore these partitions, and you will not
be able to access them without special software such as explore2fs.
Note that some disk manglement utilities will "correct errors" in these
non-FAT partitions; avoid these.
If you have more than one primary FAT partition on a disk 'Doze is
using, then 'Doze will behave oddly, showing inaccessible phantom drives
for every partition on the disk, possibly corrupting data on a

Perhaps it's a problem with the way you have the kernel set up.
Similar requirements exist for the sound blaster Live driver. If you
read the included documentation, you will find this information
present. Depending on your kernel configuration, it may be necessary
to recompile the kernel.
The original Vortex driver as well as the current one work fine in
Mandrake 6.0, Mandrake 7.0, Redhat 6.0 and Mandrake 7.1.
It's been a few months since I installed the updated driver from
sourceforge, but don't you have to run "make" without arguments first
to generate the binaries before you

I haven't studied your specific question, but let me raise
another point. I have the same drive, but I use tar to backup.
I've found the mt command cannot place me at the appropriate
tape archive for recovering something if I put multiple archives
on the same tape. (The same thing happens on a Travan SCSI
tape drive we had.) But if I do an
mt -f /dev/nht0 weof
between the archives, then I can position the tape using twice
the requisite number of skips.
Have you checked if the same thing happens for you?

Regardless of these restrictions, I would *never* put more than one
device on an IDE controller if speed were an issue, especially since
IDE controllers are so cheap (even the UDMA-66s nowdays)

I didn't think about this. I will try when I have some free time.
Onother interesting thing is which CPU will boot as primary. I thing
it will be the faster one.

I think that Linux scheduler is not optimal at dividing tasks between
different CPUs. I made also some estimation of one CPU "power" in
single and dual setup:
P2 350 1.0 reference
Cel. 4501.2
Cel. 5501.3
P2 350 dual 0.8
Cel. 450 dual 0.7
Cel. 550 dual 1.0
You can see, that Celeron 450 is rather weak at dual setup, but
Celeron 550 works well in both setups.

Recent studies show that, the average office-worker loose half a day
per week on "computer difficulties". These included:

Well, I just heard of this thing called X, supposedly it's
this graphical thing for Unix, rumour has it there's even some
applications for it. Stuck in the 70's as I am, I don't think
it will ever be of much use to me, but you might want to check it out.

How does memory and disk speed relate to FloatingPoint
performance? This thread has my attention because a friend
at Qualcomm said he got better performance out of a PPro
then a Sparc 10 when doing simulations on voice codecs.
That surprised me and I'd like to know how the Alpha does FP.
Something more logical of a response is needed to be CONSIDERED
authoritary.

This sounds like the problem I had in RH5.2. The MS Intellimouse PS/2 would
work at the console screen and then at the X window screen. But if I exited
X
back to the console the mouse would barf. This mouse has a wheel button
so I downloaded the 'imwheel' program from freshmeat. This program
includes a patched gpm which solved the mouse barf problem. (Note: the
original gpm did not show 'imps2' as a valid mouse type if you run 'gpm -i';
the patched one does.)
Here's the file /etc/sysconfig/mouse file I'm now using:
MOUSETYPE="imps2"
XMOUSETYPE="IMPS/2"
