And I'd say, from the expression on her

Of course they may. Sadly, there's usually no member of the opposite sex
involved with either activity.

(I'm speaking entirely tongue-in-cheek here, addressing the stereotype of the
male lutenist who is awkward around women. This is partly inspired by the
real-life experiences of my friend who plays lute and is also a Star Trek
fanatic. PLEASE, no one get insulted! I have nothing against Star Trek.)

Its another "vanitas" picture. The character in the back row next to the
lovers - the one smiling while pointing to them and looking out at us - is
obviously gaunt and skeletal. This person probably represents death or
disease creeping into the midst of the group that is having such a good time
that they are oblivious. This underscores the folly of such wasteful
pursuits such as music and sex.

Good question,
Monica.

And I'd say, from the expression on her
face and her body language,
that the outcome won't necessarily be
joyful for the guy, at least not
for long. Depends what she does

BTW, from the size, fretting, and style of head, I'd say it's more

Yes, they look like a fun group. That isn't what your rehearsals look
   like, Monica?

BTW, from the size, fretting, and style of head, I'd say it's more
likely an unusually shaped cittern. Looks like she's using a plectrum,
too. But, when you get wired, terminology gets confusing.

I came THIS CLOSE to making an instrument based on that painting a long
   time ago.

   Best to all,

MOnica

Really interesting. Had a quick look. Some pics of some of his
instruments. Lots of fascinating engravings: like this good-looking
lute player:

http://www.ram.ac.uk/emuweb/objects/common/webmedia.php?irn=1603&reftable=ecatalogue&refirn=2099

or this woman playing a guitar:

and more.

Dear Luca

RISM lists this, which might be what you mean:

Woodfor Green, privatbibliothek Robert Spencer Ms. ohne Signature (I)

It's a MS that used to be in the private library of Robert Spencer
(where did Bob's books go, Royal College?), before that in the private
libary of A. Cortot.

French tab, 6 lines, for lute, and 5 lines for Mandora. Ca 1720.
It has a stamp on folio 1r: Bohush

Sorry, no help, really.

Dear collective wisdom,

I am looking for more information about the Bohush manuscript.

In the "32 Easy Pieces for Baroque Lute", edited by Anthony Bailes for
Tree Edition a number of pieces have been included from a "Bohush"
manuscript, without any further detail. The Chaconne is beautiful.

Any body out there knowing more about this manuscript?

Thank you in advance to you all,

Luca
