Layout not found
Hi everyone :-) I am working my way through the lyx tutorial. It teaches how to change the layout. I can make it 'article', and 'book', but the others which I have tried give the message layout not found. For example: -letter -article (AMS) -various Japanese ones I tried Am I meant to download them separately? I am using lyx 2.0.6 I also have another problem. I am using a Mac with OS 10.9. The instructions say protected return is control+return, but I found that it seems to be actually command+return on my computer, whereas control+return seems to reset the environment to standard. I have not yet found out what protected space is, since neither control nor command do it. Thank you!

Trying to install xetexCV document class
I wanted to install xetexCV document class. I have been trying to follow these instructions: http://blog.oak-tree.us/index.php/2010/05/19/latex-cv-part4 I am using Lyx 2.0.6, and the newest MacTex I guess since I downloaded it a few days ago. And Mac OS 10.9. Seems like there are 2 steps, one to put it into Lyx, and one to put it into Tex. (The Tex instructions I have found particularly impossible to understand). I put the .layout file into the layout folder of lyx. But the instructions tell me: When finished, reconfigure LyX (Tools-Reconfigure). However, under Tools, there is not such option as Reconfigure. Also it says To enable the feature, all you need do is go to Document - Settings - Output, and then enable the “Use XeLaTeX” feature. but I could not find Use XeLaTex option. And, I could not work out how to add the files to Tex. But it does say For users of Mac OS X and Windows, XeTeX is included in the MacTeX and MikTeX distributions (respectively) - does that mean I do not need to add anything to it, since I installed MacTex?
Re: Trying to install xetexCV document class

Re: Layout not found
Are you trying to change the document class of (a copy of) the tutorial file? If so, the messages you are getting are to be expected. Not every document class supports every environment known to (some) other document classes. For instance, I just opened an old slide show (Beamer document class) and arbitrarily tried to convert it to Article (AMS). The slide show has a paragraph that uses the Institute environment (to indicate the speaker's affiliation). Beamer knows what that is; Article (AMS) does not. Each frame (slide) begins with a BeginFrame environment, and Article (AMS) has no idea what that is. Clicking one of the messages should take you to the text that has LyX confused. LyX will not delete anything from an unrecognized environment (layout); it will just mark the environment as unrecognized (for instance, Institute (unknown) in the environment drop-down. It's up to you to select an alternative environment understood by the new document class. Paul

The slide show has a paragraph that uses the "Institute" environment (to indicate the speaker's affiliation). Beamer knows what that is; Article (AMS) does not. Each frame (slide) begins with a "BeginFrame" environment, and Article (AMS) has no idea what that is. Clicking one of the messages should take you to the text that has LyX confused. LyX will not delete anything from an unrecognized environment (layout); it will just mark the environment as unrecognized (for instance, "Institute (unknown)" in the environment drop-down. It's up to you to select an alternative environment understood by the new document class. Paul

For example when I try Article (ACS), it gives the message "Layout > Not Found". It says that 4 times, under the Errors section, and under the > Description section it says: > > "Layout `Verse' was not found." > > I am up to 3.1 in the Tutorial, and that is where it instructed me to try > changing the Document Class. So, the Tutorial cannot be converted to all document classes without errors. In real life you'll start with a document class you like or you were requested to do so by others. >> Protected Space is Option-Space. So I searched the internet and found this: > http://www.fnal.gov/docs/products/lyx/Tutorial.tex.html > > It is a similar document, and actually in section 2.2.2 does instruct how to > do Protected Spaces. It says "Protected Spaces, which are made by typing > C-Space". Ok. It's difficult to provide information like this consistently for all platforms. On a Mac you're using Command-o for "File open" and it's Control-o on Linux boxes. You may have a look at Help > Shortcuts. But the list of shortcuts there is not complete. LyX has a mechanism to describe shortcuts as they're defined for the given platform. But the author of the tutorial has to use it to give the reader the correct infos. This is not the case for your examples, unfortunately. Sorry. Regards, Stephan

The only folder beginning like that is just called Tex. Within that, it has a folder called Distributions, and then 3 things that are 'Aliases' called Local; Root and Documentation. Should I be putting it in any of these? Thanks!
Re: Trying to install xetexCV document class
There is a distinct difference between /Library (system wide library directory) and ~/Library (the library directory in your home directory). You're looking in the wrong place.
