page numbers
How can I eliminate a page number on the first page, use small case Roman numerals on the next few pages and start regular numbers on the main body of text. I have a title page with a page break, then the TOC, then another page break, then the main body of text. I would appreciate an answer that I could easily implement without scrolling through the manual. (again, big time crunch) I apologize for not RTM at this point, but this paper is due very soon. After I graduate, I promise I will RTM before I post. Shawn -- Mitakuye Oyasin --

Case shortcuts
Are there any shortcuts to change case of letters/words (similar to emacs M-c, M-l, M-u, etc.)? Shawn -- Mitakuye Oyasin --
Re: Case shortcuts
Thank you for your response, but I need a little clarification. (I am not a programmer, so excuse the dumb question.) When I made a new file titled ~/.lyx/bind/emacs.bind -- I typed in literally the same characters as you have listed below. After I wrote the file and reconfigured LyX, I closed the program, then re-opened it. When I tried to use the bindings, nothing worked. I must be missing something. Is the C-x typed in as a Capital C followed by a dash - followed by a lower case x? or is the Capital C (signifying the control key) entered in a different way? I hope I make sense. Shawn. How can I change the font size of all margin notes? I want all of them smaller than the main text. I am in a serious time crunch and a quick check of the manual didn't answer the question. Thanks in advance. Shawn -- Mitakuye Oyasin --

U.S. Legal Briefs
Then I do not stand alone. I too, am a LyX fan. I will be taking the bar soon and then go into my own practice and I seem to be doomed to using a different (less than optimal) program for legal writing. Unfortuntely, I do not have the know-how or the time right now to develop a set of legal document class' that will fill the bill for the peculiar legal formats required for the courts here in the United States. I would be willing to help on a limited basis (Maybe Dave would too???) if there was some kind soul out there who would undertake such a project. I really do not like being forced to use the word-processors that the legal community seem to use exclusively (MS-Word and Corel Word Perfect). There should be alternatives. It would be great if one of those alternatives was my favorite document processor...the one and only LyX. RTF LaTex conversion
Is there a program that will convert RTF to LaTex (or Lyx) that would make it easier to import a document into Lyx with most of the formatting in place? Converting RTF to, importing the text to Lyx, and then going through the document by hand is a bit time-comsuming when dealing with 60 page+ documents. Shawn -- Mitakuye Oyasin --

screen font
Hello, I have recently installed RH6.2 and Lyx1.1.6fix1 on an old Compaq laptop. Lyx's on-screen font is very strange (looks like a combination or westminster and playbill fonts in Word2000) and is very hard on the eyes. Is there a way that it can be corrected to a more readable font (I prefer a non-sarif font on-screen) or is it something I will have to live with? Shawn Koons -- Mitakuye Oyasin --

RedHat 5.2
Hello, I have a laptop with limited memory, so I have to run RH 5.2 (not sure if I can go to higher version - P166 w/ 16Meg Ram.) What is the highest version of Lyx I can run, and what are the dependencies I need to make sure are included? Also, I have so far been unsuccessful at getting the modem working, so is there a way to break down the program on floppies - or should I wait until I figure out the modem situation? (BTW - the RH 5.2 boxed set I got at a book sale included Lyx 0.12.0 -- it is functional, but I wonder about trying to import documents produced with later versions - I.e., is the later version backwards comparitble.) Right now I am stuck with lyx 1.1.5fix1 on a windoze box. -- which is why I NEED to get lyx running on a Linix box ASAP before I go crazy.) Shawn Koons -- -- Mitakuye Oyasin --

To correct the problem I merely logged off and logged in as windows equivilant to "root." (I hesitate to use that term with regard to Win98, but don't know what else to call it.) After I did that, all maintinence programs ran fine and I can now use the geometry package (although I have only tested changing margins so far) Thank you, everyone for your responces and extreme patience. I have learned a lot the past two days. Maybe when I need to add things to my setup, it will be a little easier. Shawn Koons wrote: Claus: Sorry about the last post. X-server
Hello, Is there an X-server for windows98 that is free? I can use X-win32 but would prefer a fully functional server that is not, as a friend of mine calls it "cripple ware." In part the request is because I want to respect software developers (I register shareware I continue to use). I am not trying to be a moralist, I just want to stick to my ideals. (On the other hand, I am missing the use of lyx) Shawn
Print and METAFONT problems
Hi, I am HAPPY, I have the Lyx logo on my Win98 desktop! And even better, I can marginally use the program. However, I have a slight problem (there may be many to come because I am no efficienado when it comes to hacking) I cannot either view PostScript nor can I print from it. I get the following message: Failed to load C:\GHOSTGUM\gs0.0\bin\gsdll32.dll, error 1157 = DLL not found Failed to load C:\GHOSTGUM\GSVIEW\gsdll32.dll, error 1157 = DLL not found Failed to load gsdll32.dll, error 1157 = DLL not found Can't load Ghostscript DLL If anyone can help guide me, I would appreciate it. Also, When viewing in dvi (Yap) I can print but must use a different printer (mine is a Brother HL-630) driver. When I print this way I get a nag screen that says: "You have selected different METAFONT modes for the printer and the display. While it is possible to use two modes, it is not a recommended practice to do so." Since my printer will not print @ 600 dpi (I use the HP Laser Jet IIISi (300dpi) - will I be damaging anything by staying with this setup. Appologies if it is blatantly obvious that I am not real literate in this area. If more information is needed, let me know. Shawn
can't change margins

Tried reconfigure and no luck. Is still asking for "geometry.sty" - could it be a file that is missing or needs to be relocated? maybe that it's missing. let it search by the explorer, than you are sure. you can get it at CTAN. but dont't forget to do a texhash after installing. Herbert There is a file "geometry.cfg" that says it is the replacement for "geometry.sty" in the "C:\texmf\tex\latex\config" file. I don't know what to do from here. What is a "texhash"? Shawn
Shawn

X-server for windows
Okay, I was hoping it wouldn't come to this, but I have had to put my Linux box in moth balls and have reverted to using windows 98. (shudder) I can make do without a lot of the conveniences found on Linux, but Lyx is definately not one of them. I would like to know what is the best x-server I can use. One of the sites recomends Starnet's X-Win 32, but says it can only be used for 2 hours. I usually am sitting in front of lyx for much longer than that. Any suggestions. Shawn
Re: X-server for windows
Hello, Opps, I misread the site, it says that x-win32 can be used in 2hr incraments. I suppose I will just have to shut it down and then start it back up. If I'm wrong, let me know. Re: Page numbers
I need to eliminate the page number from the cover page and start numbering on the second page. Can someone tell me how to modify the preamble to accomplish this? in the text, not preamble: \thispagestyle{empty} is valid only for THIS page This worked, thank you. I then put a pagebreak after the first page and added: \pagenumbering{arabic} on the first line of the second page. (I found this in Lamport's book after getting your reply) - this started the numbering sequence on the second page with "1". I don't know if that is the "proper" way, but it was effective. :-) Thanks much for the help. Shawn -- Mitakuye Oyasin

Cut and paste crash with version 1.1.5pre1.rpm
Having spent the weekend working with lyx, I have come to the conclusion that cut and paste will not work when the text being cut and pasted includes hard spaces that have been imported from an ascii file. Every time I try to paste text I had just cut or copied that included a hard space (either in the same line or between paragraphs) the program crashes. I worked around this problem by highlighting the text and middle-clicking where I wished to place the text. It worked, but is a definate pain when having to navigate a 50+ page document. Unfortunately, I have not been able to learn to use gdb yet (I will work on learning it soon, but have had a hard year of lots of law school stuff:-| -- then again, I whine.) I would be willing to post some of the problem text as a file, if that would help. I am running Suse 6.4 with Lyx version 1.1.5pre1.rpm which I installed via YaST. I am also using the document layout 'article'. Shawn Koons -- Mitakuye Oyasin

find and replace
I have a numbered question and answer list (ASCII) that I have imported into lyx. I would like to know how to replace all of the question numbers (they are chronological) as enumerated, also would like to know how to nest the answers beneath each enumerated question. There are over 400 questions and answers. I know how to accomplish this by the long and arduous method (doing it by hand) but am wondering if there is a way to do this all at once, or at least in a smaller series of steps. Thanks in advance Shawn Koons
find and replace with bold
I am working on a legal outline in the report class. It is very important to distinguish between the words "shall", "will", "may", and certain others. Is there a way to do a find and replace of a word and only change the style? I need to BOLD two or three separate words (each occur 100's of time in the outline. I have tried to use a text editor, but it won't allow me to replace one word with something using two lines. E.g., I want to bold the word may:(something like this) FROM: /series defalt may TO: \series bold "may" Shawn
include PART in TOC?
Can the TOC be modified to include "# Part"? I checked the manuals, but found nothing -- though that doesn't mean its not there :-| Shawn

Is reference-return possible?
Hi all, At the risk of getting chastised for not reading the manuals [I have ;) ] correctly [maybe I haven't ;| ], I need to know if there is any efficient way to return to the point where I clicked on a reference (similar to the return button on a web browser). I have an enormous outline and need to navigate it quickly. (maybe I should learn html and use a browser next time, but right now I do not believe I have the time) Maybe I need to place markers at both points, except I reference one marker at more than one place in the text so that may be confusing. I am probably trying to stretch the use of Lyx beyond its intended purpose, but thought I would ask anyway. Regardless of whether my request is possible, Lyx is still my choice for text processing. Thanx. Any suggestions will be welcome. Is there a different 1.1.4 fix2 rpm other than the ".rpm.RH51.rpm" found at Kayvan's site? Or should I use the RH5.1 fix Thank You.
