Re: iPhone 5c versus 5s

2013-10-22 Thread Ian McNamara
I have the five s and compared to the 4s it's quicker for sure. I find the 5s
loads things up instantly and is a lot faster than the 4s I have not really
played with a 5c so can't comment. I'd go for the faster processor though and
go for the 5s.

"Authentication has no window" When Installing an app

2013-10-22 Thread Parham Doustdar

Hi all,

When I wanted to install Proxifier (using its .pkg installation
package), at the very end, OSX would ask me for a password. If I tried
to navigate in this window or waited too much, I would hear
"Authentication busy". If i would alt-tab away and back, I would hear
"Authentication has no window".

How can I fix this issue with having no window? The only way I found the
last time was to restart my system, as Voiceover didn't recognize other
windows and nothing worked. Even when I left-clicked, Voiceover would
say "Apple menu", but when I would press any of the arrow keys, I would
just hear the voice effect of hitting a boundary.

Thanks.

" busy" - why does it happen?

2013-10-22 Thread Parham Doustdar

Hi all,

When in iTunes, Airport utility, or even in VLC player when
fast-forwarding using command-option-right arrow, I would hear
" busy", like "iTunes busy".

Why does this happen? In some cases, it makes the application unusable
until I close it and reopen it (it mostly happens in iTunes).

Thanks.

Note to all you guys,

I am so sorry for all the bounced messages from incorrect accounts. I have
multiple email addresses, so I often am sitting on other accounts. I’m much
more vigilant about this now, and it shouldn’t happen again from here on out.

I agree that it’s not a great solution on another note, but it does indeed
work. Man, Persistent Pete don’t take no for an answer, does he? :) ;) LOL!

2013-10-22 Thread Christopher Gilland
OK guys, you may not like this, but I did find out a work around.

If in Mail, you go to preferences, command+Comma, then go to the fviewing tab,
then check the box to use classic mode, it then seems to announce unread
messages at that point.

So far that is the only work around I’ve found to be 100% consistent.

2013-10-22 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Well, the short answer is, no. The long answer is, yes, and, no.

Yes, I would update, if your mac supports it, which if you got it in the
last year or two, it definitely! beyond a doubt should. As for it
interfering with ML updates, neh... You'll be fine. At least, for the time
being. That's kind of where the yes and no comes into play. Yes, you'll be
fine for now. No, you won't be fine in the long run down the road. I mean,
it'll probably take a year to a year and a half before ML updates are no
longer downloadable, however, that's quite a ways in the future. If you
don't feel comfortable upgrading, you have two options, either wait it out,
or call my company, and for $5 via PayPal we'll assist you or anyone else
with the installation who may need some help along the way, or just want
someone experienced to look over their shoulder whilst they do it.

We're open Mon-Fri from 8:00AM to 5:00PM, and closed on weekends and
holidays.

704-256-0067, and choose the option for Tech Support.

Again though, not trying to make a sales pitch, it's just an option I wanted
to throw at you. Honestly, there is no reason per sé that says you *have!*
to update, although personally, I would highly recommend it, myself.

I actually may have figured part of it out, though I still am confused why
this happened to start with. I didn't realize that that particular system
was still on the Gold Master. I'm in the process of updating it now. My
mini which now is on the official release isn't having this problem, so, I'm
thinking something might a broke in the GM.

Let me get this MacBook Pro updated, then I'll report my findings regarding

I'm wonderring if I took the correct steps to update from my GM to the
official release, being that I'm seeing some odd behaviors here and there.
It's nothing major, definitely not, but it's enough to make me kind a
wonder.

What I personally did was I went to software update from within the GM, and
then hit command+5 for updates. I didn't see anything for Mavericks, so I
then went back to the search box in my toolbar with command+F, then typed in
Maverick, and the first result that popped up was it. I then hit the
download button, and then proceeded as usual.

I'm wonderring if I should have not necessarily repartitioned and
reformatted, God forbid, but maybe I still should have reinstalled from the
recovery partition. I'm just wonderring what is the best way to update from
a seed or a GM to the real thing, just so I'll know for the future.

i have a folder full of mp3 files but i don't want to see the mp3

still showing. i then went into my folder of mp3 files selected them all
and went into the file inspector and ticked hide extensions and still no

has anyone come across this problem? how did you get around it? i must say

I use name changer. You can put replacement text and have it go through and do
it all in 1 go, or do it the slower way. Go through the times and have it
replaced 5 minutes with let's say nothing and it will do that. There probably
is a better way but my brain is not thinking right now.
Name changer is not on the app store btw and it's quite old so try looking for
it at download.com

Take care.

RE: OS X Mavricks, Wait a bit

2013-10-22 Thread Linda C. Knight

I am wondering if I need to update to the mavricks?

Is it necessary?

WouIf I don't update to Mavricks, would this interfere with updates to
Mountain Lion?

Or, will there be updates to Mountain Lion.

Being a new mac user, I would appreciate any tips on this.

Thanks.

Sorry Esther, the keystroke does not seem to recognize threads, and there seems
to be no delay after pressing option+arrow. The focus immediately moves to the
top or bottom message in the current mailbox.

I am running the GM, so this behavior may be different in today’s public
release.

Cheers,
Bryan

The default for new documents seems to be wrap to page, which you don't want.
Yo no you have it on the right setting when it tells you that you've activated
wrapp to window.

Maybe it was just my mac mini being stupid. Who knows. I just tried updating
from the GM to the full release, and once it downloaded, and then I restarted
the first time, it just kind a sat there and decided to be a looks, and do
nothing. Finally, I hit the power switch and manually restarted. So far, that
doesn’t seem to have any ill effect.

 Hi,
Yes, I am, And have been for several months. The testing process has not
been as smooth as in past releases, but I trust that things will
eventually settle down. I just thought I should get the note out there,
before some people upgraded and started panicking when iBooks didn't work

:) That being said, I want to gently suggest that VoiceOver users wait

While I personally do not consider any of these game breaking, per se,
they are significant enough to cause some confusion and annoyance. I

Re: a problem with hiding file extensions

2013-10-22 Thread Glenn
I agree, I don't know why anyone would not want to know of the file
extensions.
I think it is stupid of MS to have started the hiding of file extensions.
It is quite unsafe to know what the file extension is.
It could be an executable and you might not even know it.

Actually I have all extensions showing . Did you go back out and in to the
folder and see if that hid the mp3 extensions. You will want to see those as
you will want to know what opens them, at least that's why I have it, and
I'm from the doss days where I had to see them lol!
Take care.

One thing that really really shocked me, was that the update from ML to

Bryan,

That's great news. Does this work the same way it used to? By that I mean that
you can use this to navigate threads (conversations) as well as your entire
mailbox to go to the first or last message, by holding down the Option+Up or
Down arrow key for a short time.

And is it also worth mentioning that there are new Take Control series eBooks
for Upgrading to Mavericks, and for using iBooks, although I haven't seen the
contents yet? These should be eligible for purchase using the discount that is
available to mac-access list subscribers.

To remind list members, there is information about this at:
http://www.mac-access.net/Take-Control.html

Note that the titles I mentioned are very recently announced additions that are
not yet listed in the local accessible version of the Take Control catalog.

HTH. Cheers,

Given that the iWork sweet improvements are new to me as well, I’d still say
somewhat yes. The improved accessibility does make a very compelling argument
though.
Best,

Re: iWork positive impressions

2013-10-22 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Jeff,
iBooks accessibility is one of a few issues which stands out to me—the most
significant in my view because it will be immediately noticeable. Safari has
some internal bugs—not VO-related exactly, but they do cause some odd VoiceOver
speech on occasion. Over all though, i’d say VO and Safari do work well
together.
iWork is a significant reason to upgrade all on its own.
Best,
Zack.

Hi All,

Now that OS X 10.9, AKA Mavericks, has finally entered public release, it is
acceptable to mention it on this list without violating the NDA. :) That
being said, I want to gently suggest that VoiceOver users wait to upgrade
for a little while, as there are still some issues unresolved from the
accessibility testing process.
While I personally do not consider any of these game breaking, per se, they
are significant enough to cause some confusion and annoyance. I suggest just
waiting until at least the first general update to the system before
committing yourself. In particular, iBooks accessibility is not all that
might be hoped-for. It is being actively worked on, and will be improved in
the coming weeks.
Warmest regards,
Zack.

Are there any positive reasons to update? Does VO work better with the new

Keynote Slides

2013-10-22 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Thomas and all,

While I have had very positive impressions of the overwhelming majority of the
new iWork sweet, Keynote still isn’t accessible when it comes to playing
slideshows. VoiceOver doesn’t allow me to see which slide is showing, just
displaying a blank window throughout. If this could be passed on as a matter of
some urgency to engineering it would be lovely.
Thanks much,
Zack

Hi ALl,
I wanted to write and say that thus far I’ve had very positive impressions of

After waiting about 45 minutes for it to install, and additionally a little

I'll be interested to see what this has. Okay, optimizing your Mac?

Now that OS X 10.9, AKA Mavericks, has finally entered public release, it
is acceptable to mention it on this list without violating the NDA. :)
That being said, I want to gently suggest that VoiceOver users wait to
upgrade for a little while, as there are still some issues unresolved from
 the accessibility testing process.
While I personally do not consider any of these game breaking, per se,
they are significant enough to cause some confusion and annoyance. I
suggest just waiting until at least the first general update to the system
before committing yourself. In particular, iBooks accessibility is not all
that might be hoped-for. It is being actively worked on, and will be
 improved in the coming weeks.
 Warmest regards,
 Zack.

Hi,
Make sure you hear "text field is editing" before doing the two-finger

Hmm. never could get the 2 finger double tap for dictation to work. It
normally just starts playing the book I'm listening to. I normally just find
the button with my thumb as half the time I'm walking.

there is absolutely nothing to be excited or enthusiastic about from the

I for one have no intention of putting it on any production machine for a long

That being said, I want to gently suggest that VoiceOver users wait to
upgrade for a little while, as there are still some issues unresolved from

While I personally do not consider any of these game breaking, per se,
they are significant enough to cause some confusion and annoyance. I
suggest just waiting until at least the first general update to the system

Did you try to literally interact with the button title and then click with

context menu and clicking something from there?

I don't know the site, but just some other ideas.

Hmm I now a user on my server who uses squirrel mail. I can have them try
and send me a test email if they are awake enough to do this evening
(they are in class) I know it used to work, but maybe I"m using a
different version of the mail thingy. I don't know. If someone beats me

Good luck.

Hello.

My company has a few customers who are blind using ?voiceover that are
running into some problems. I thought that I would throw this question
out to you guys and see if anyone knows a way to get around this issue.

Basically, we use WHM/CPanel as our server administration. We also
have, for web based mail a copy of Squirrel Mail installed on the
server.

The issue is that when a client logs into their webmail account via
Squirrel Mail, they then are presented with two frames: a left frame,
and a right frame. Once they interact with the right frame, they can
get to the link to compose a new message. This works fine, and they are
able to get the e-mail composed, and elect to receive a read or a
deliver receipt, or both. If they need to attach any files, they also
can do this with no problem. The issue however is when they try sending
off the e-mail to its recipient. As soon as they press VO+Space on the
send button, absolutely nothing at all seems to be happening, and we
have confirmed that the individual who should be receiving the e-mail
does not get it in their inbox. When I look at the mail server logs on
our server, I do not see any trace that the e-mail has gone through the
smtp server, nor through any sort of path to reach the recipient.

We also tried routing the mouse with command+VO+F5, then clicking with
VO+shift+Space, and even have tried routing the mouse, then literally
clicking the track pad, and even have tried pressing return, as well as
pressing the space bar on this button. Nothing at all is working. We
tried to stop interacting with the right frame, then reinteract just in
case the page didn't refresh as far as Voiceover was concerned, but this
doesn't seem to have any effect either. Further to complicate things,
we have tried both in Safari, as well as in Google Chrome, I tried
myself using Webkit, and even using Lightning Web Browser. On Windows,
I've tried with Firefox, as well as with Internet Exploder... oh wait...
did I really just say that? LOL! At any rate, nothing works.

I'm completely out of options.

We are running Squirrel Mail 1.4.22 on Cent-OS 6 which is running
CPanel/WHM Web Host Manager 11.38.2.7.

If anyone has any idea, please let me know so that I may promptly answer
this support ticket on what else may can be done.

Hmm. never could get the 2 finger double tap for dictation to work. It normally
just starts playing the book I'm listening to. I normally just find the button
with my thumb as half the time I'm walking.

Tc all.

Thanks for all that, I have to admit to finding the dictation facilities very
convenient, like the way you can double tap with 2 fingers on an edit text
field, start dictating and perform another 2 finger double tap on that field to
finish, makes things easier than ever.

Re: Formatting/partitioning an external drive on a Mac

2013-10-22 Thread Sarah k Alawami
1. go to disk utility

2. go to the drive name, for example 2 tb elements

3. go to the partitions tab and set it to 1.

4. name the partition (not required but a good idea) and make sure you are set
to what ever format in the pop up button (for example mac osx extended
journaled)
5. make sure the size is correct.

6. hit the partition button.
7. Read the warning very carefully and make sure you understand what will be
erased.
8 except the warning and wait for about maybe 5 minutes on the outside. I've
had this task get done in about 5 or so minutes on a good day.

2013-10-22 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Actually I have all extensions showing . Did you go back out and in to the
folder and see if that hid the mp3 extensions. You will want to see those as
you will want to know what opens them, at least that's why I have it, and I'm
from the doss days where I had to see them lol!
Take care.

Re: iPhone 5c versus 5s

2013-10-22 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Paul,

Well the 5S has a 64bit processor. Which is taking mobile activity to a new
higher level. Whether it will make it easier for VO users, I'm not sure.
Certainly, benchmark tests suggest it is a lot faster. But if there are
benefits to us, I don't know. Certainly, it seems logical to me if you are
using apps like look tell, tap tap see, O C R apps etc. The faster processor
and better camera on the 5S will be a worthy long term investment. You need to
ask yourself. What do I currently use a phone for? What might I use a phone for
in the future?

Re: iPhone 5c versus 5s

2013-10-22 Thread Thuy
Hi Paul. I have the 5s, but I have heard from people who have the 5c
that it seems a bit sluggish, the speaker doesn't sound as good, it's
possibly slightly heavier in weight, it doesn't support the
fingerpring sensor, it has older architecture processor. So for the
sake of 80 quid difference, I would go for the 5s. Hope this helps?

Cheers

Re: iPhone 5c versus 5s

2013-10-22 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

The 5C is exactly the same as the 5 in processing power though the colour may
be different and its made from plastic instead of metal.

As I recall you're in Australia right? I know the pricing of the 5C and the 5S
in Australia and there's not all that much difference in the pricing when all
said and done and - given that the 5S is a phone with much more power - I'd be
inclined to forget about the 5C completely and get the 5S.

What are the differences between the 5c and the 5s other than the case and the
price? Does the 5c support the new finger print unlock mechanism? Why might I
consider the 5s rather than the cheaper 5c?

Many thanks in anticipation of your advice.

iPhone 5c versus 5s

2013-10-22 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have had an iPhone 3GS 16GB for some time and am now considering upgrading to
an iPhone 5c or 5s both 16GB. the 3GS does not support IOS 7 and some of my

What are the differences between the 5c and the 5s other than the case and the
