iBooks on the mac.

2013-10-25 Thread Ian McNamara
Hello all, how do I take a book back to the beginning in iBooks if I want to
read from the start of the book again. I am wondering if anyone finds mavericks
a little sluggish with voice over.

Re: Question about upgrading to mavericks and thanks

Hi,
For all practical purposes, either upgrade method is the same, they get you to
the same place. Software update was traditionally used, but it doesn't matter.
Best,
Zack.

Hi,

I had spoken to a friend regarding the sluggishness I’m experiencing with my

I’m finding that it is, in fact, not.

Yesterday when listening to the mac basics podcasts on AppleVis, I thought I
could hear the same delay in that user’s VO as well; there is about a 0.5
seconds delay before VO responds to a key press. I’ve experimented with this
and I’m guessing the issue is not VO’s fault but Alex’s; VO plays the voice
tones instantly but it takes a while for the speech to come in.

Do any of you have this issue? If so and if my analysis is right, what voice do
you use? Since I’m used to eSpeak, the human factor in synthesizers is not
really important for me; I prefer responsiveness to quality every day.

Thanks.

Re: Hiding A Window From Command+Tab

2013-10-25 Thread Parham Doustdar

Hi David et al,

Let me raise my issue and see if you have a better way of solving it,
other than hiding the windows, which, as I've found so far, is not possible.

As you know, the Iranian government has censored lots of websites. To
that end, I ssh to a friend's PC in the UK and create a tunnel (using
the -D option) on a local port. I then use Proxifier to redirect all my
local traffic to that port, and start using the internet in all its
glory. :-)

Now, at this point, I have four windows open: Proxifier, Mail, Finder
and Terminal. Since I'm used to having two or three windows in this list
instead of four at minimum, you can see why I'm trying to reduce the number.

Thanks.
On 10/25/2013 10:10 PM, David Griffith wrote:

I think we just have to accept that the Mac does things differently.
On Windows you can cycle through multiple applications and open windows
within those applications with alt tab.
This causes massive potential for confusing multiple alt tabbing through
multiple windows from multiple open applications.
In contrast on the Mac cycling through Windows is restricted to a single
application and does not extend to multiple windows across apps. The need
for the Windows solution of hiding windows is not therefore anywhere near as
great on the Mac side.
It is not surprising therefore that this option does not appear to exist on
the \Mac platform.
Of course if you want to navigate multiple windows across several open
applications you can do this with Application Chooser and sort out the
window you need from there under the application heading.

The "Hide" command only hides the window of the current application. The

"Hide Others" command hides all of the other windows, leaving only the

on the screen. As you have found, this will not hide the application from
the app switcher.

Then choose what ou want to sure and wait for one of your contacts to appear.

Hi Chris

You’re more than welcome. I use the big brother of this app, CleranMyMac
which, sadly, isn’t free. But I find that it does a terrific job as well. I
guess others will say “So does Cocktail”, “so does boa boa boa”. Well yeah, I
guess that’s true. I just happen to like this suite of utilities and I thought
I’d share that with the group. Rest assured that if I find any more little
beauties like that, you’ll be amongst the first to hear about them.

Actually, stand by for some more really great news about another Mac Access

Kind regards

Updated my copy of Pages on my iPhone 4s.
So far so good.
Was able to add some text to a blank template I used to create a new
document.
Was then able to send a copy of this document via mail which sent it as
an

attachment.
Retrieved the attachment on my Windows 7 64 bit laptop.
Opened the Pages document in Jarte and was totally readable.
Nearly forgot told Pages to send it as a Word document.
As said so far so good and Cudos for Apple.

Re: "night owl" twitter client user error or a bug?

2013-10-25 Thread Sarah k Alawami
That is not a night owl issue. that is a twitter api v 1.1 issue. it’s been
going on since june or so. What I do is hit cmd option single quote to get to
to the drawer, then just open the actions menu go to follow status and hit
follow.

Take care.

Btw I did not mean single quote I just meant the key to the right of the ; key.
that is cmd cmd option ‘

Tc and good luck.

Re: Question about CCleaner

2013-10-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

I'm a CCleaner user myself across platforms.

Firstly I haven't used this utility for the Mac of late, it han't been updated
for a while as far as I'm aware though I'm going to have a look once I've
finished writing this eMail .

Secondly, before anyone uses CCleaner or anything else its a good idea to
backup your Mac and of course! the Mac is one of those machines that has the
auto backup facility built-in in the form of Time Capsule, if you backup your
system then - Should CCleaner or anything else do any damage - you can
"Restore" from the backup and continue as though nothing had happened.

When using CCleaner, use the "Analyse" function to have CCleaner do an analysis
of your machine if you're unsure of what you should clean or change yourself.

Hi Chris,
I’m not sure about this. I’ve never had occasion to try using my phone with Vo

Hi Chris,
One thing to be aware of is that the phone may lock while you’re on the
call. It’s possible you’ll need to unlock it first before your two-finger
double tap will work. More over, if you aren’t using headphones, the screen
is shut off if you hold it close to your face, which is why I generally
recommend headphones for long term use. If you move the phone away, you’ll
activate speaker phone.

Best,

I can't depend on the other end hanging up - I struggled to end a call

Re: OS X Mavricks, Wait a bit

2013-10-25 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Gordon, With the utmost of respect, why would that be non-public if you
don't mind me asking? I could see it being so during the testing phaise,
but it's been released at this point, the things that went on in testing are
things in the past. It would be like someone dies on the operating table.
While alive, due to HIPA, you couldn't disclose any info about the patient
if you were a medical specialist, but once they die, and you have their
death cirtifiquet, who cares at that point. They're dead! It's not like
saying anything medical about them would really per sé change anything.
They're no longer here on earth, so regardless your spiritual or religious
belief, the bottom line is, they're not on earth. That we can't argue. You
can't change something private that is only of the past. OK, that was kind
of an insinsitive point, and I apologize for that, I realize that, but I
hope that it truthly makes my point.

If there is something I don't get, then let me know, by all means, and I'll
refrane from further testing discussion, but I'm totally baffeled. Why
would that be still on NDA. Mavericks is out. O, K, anything still! being
developed in the present with Mavericks is one thing, that, I could see
being on NDA, but as far as the section of part that went on prior, to the
official release, I don't see where that couldn't be discussed at this
point.

I mean, you're the mod. If you say no discussion, no means no, but I
mean... no offense... really though?

Again, quite obviously, I mean this with profuse all due respect, and
absolutely no illed feelings are intended in this message toward you, Lynn,
the list, nor Apple.

Chris.

Subject: Pages for iOS latest version

Updated my copy of Pages on my iPhone 4s.
So far so good.
Was able to add some text to a blank template I used to create a new
document.
Was then able to send a copy of this document via mail which sent it as an
attachment.

Retrieved the attachment on my Windows 7 64 bit laptop.
Opened the Pages document in Jarte and was totally readable.
Nearly forgot told Pages to send it as a Word document.
As said so far so good and Cudos for Apple.

Re: iWork positive impressions

2013-10-25 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Would that be why when I tried creating a table and I tried making the top
row of the table be a header row, VO didn't indicate this? I thought maybe
it was because I really hadn't made a table header row, and didn't know
completely what I was doing. Could it be that in actuality, I did indeed do
it, but VO just didn't tell me so?

Hi Zack

One thing that doesn’t work at all is headings. If, for instance, you have
an Office document, and it has multi-level headings, VoiceOver does not read
them. It does, however, now read lists extremely well. That, at least, is a
very big improvement.

Kind regards

"night owl" twitter client user error or a bug?

2013-10-25 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi all,

I wonder if the good old night-owl (YoruFukurou) is still under development as
there hasn’t been an update in ages. Anyways, has anyone else noticed that it
won’t let you follow someone?

I’ve tried typing “follow (username)” a few times now and the tweet gets posted
rather than the action requested being carried out.

Is there any half decent alternative? I don’t like Syrinx at all.

Cheers,

Re: Ending a phone call on iPhone

2013-10-25 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Chris,
One thing to be aware of is that the phone may lock while you’re on the call.
It’s possible you’ll need to unlock it first before your two-finger double tap
will work. More over, if you aren’t using headphones, the screen is shut off if
you hold it close to your face, which is why I generally recommend headphones
for long term use. If you move the phone away, you’ll activate speaker phone.
Best,
Zack.

itunes audiobook issue solved

2013-10-25 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Evening folks,

Turned out that the distortion experienced on audiobook playback was
generalised. On a hunch I check the EQ and it was both on, and set to small
speakers. Turning it off fixed the issue. This may not affect anyone else but
it might hence passing it on.

Ending a phone call on iPhone

2013-10-25 Thread Chris Goodwin

Hello all,

Ironically, one of the trickiest things I'm finding to do with my iPhone is
to end a phone call. If I call someone using Siri then two finger double
tap seems amazingly unreliable.VoiceOver seems either to shut up or be
very quiet.

Is it just me or is there a reliable way of ending a call?

I can't depend on the other end hanging up - I struggled to end a call today
when the number I called was engaged.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi

I should make the point that although the operating system is now public, what
went on in the test phase is very much still non-public.

Hi Esther

Yes, these books are certainly available from us. We haven’t had the
opportunity to update the catalogue yet, but that is on my list of things to do
for the next couple of days. In the interim, if you’d like the books, by all

Re: iWork positive impressions

2013-10-25 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Gordon,
Yeah, headings are still important to indicate. I should note that this seems
distinct from the headings in Pages, which are read properly and even split
into their own section. I guess they didn’t account for headers in the body
text.
Best,
Zack.

Pages for iOS latest version

2013-10-25 Thread Chris H

Updated my copy of Pages on my iPhone 4s.
So far so good.
Was able to add some text to a blank template I used to create a new
document.
Was then able to send a copy of this document via mail which sent it as
an attachment.

Retrieved the attachment on my Windows 7 64 bit laptop.
Opened the Pages document in Jarte and was totally readable.
Nearly forgot told Pages to send it as a Word document.
As said so far so good and Cudos for Apple.

Re: iWork positive impressions

2013-10-25 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Zack

One thing that doesn’t work at all is headings. If, for instance, you have an
Office document, and it has multi-level headings, VoiceOver does not read them.
It does, however, now read lists extremely well. That, at least, is a very big
improvement.

RE: Hiding A Window From Command+Tab

2013-10-25 Thread David Griffith

Maybe providing it is also not in the command tab list or as one pointed

The "Hide" command only hides the window of the current application. The "Hide
Others" command hides all of the other windows, leaving only the current application's window
visible. I guess it is used to minimise clutter on the screen. As you have found, this will not
hide the application from the app switcher.

Re: Hiding A Window From Command+Tab

2013-10-25 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
No. All that does is to hide all the windows that are currently opened
within the app focussed in the foreground. The difference in that from hide
all/show all is that the hide all only puts the app in the dock. If you
minimize, then not only will you have the app in the dock, but at the far
righthand corner of your dock, you'll also find icons for each opened window
within that app which has been minimized.

Hello Georgina

Hum! I think we’d better stick with what we know, to be honest. This stuff is
way way over my head I’m afraid. I know it’s pretty simple to the LINUX experts
amongst the group and yes that’s an area where Gordon really needs to start
learning properly, if only to further his chances of employment in the IT
industry. Anyway, for now whilst I’m grateful for the information, we’d better
stick to XLD, and tolerate its problems.

Warm regards

Hello everybody

These links will be active for a week or so. The first is a direct download

McAfee antivirus stuff and other add-ons for use in the guest operating system.
If you don’t plan on installing these, skip this URL and use the second one
instead.

Download URL for Fusion 6.0.1 updated 22 October 2013:

And the below URL is for VMware Fusion Light v6.0.01, updated 22 October 2013.
Note that this version only contains the core components of Fusion. This is
what you need if you don’t plan on installing any of the add-ons.

I hope that at least somebody may find these of use.

Kind regards

Re: Voiceover Sluggishness

2013-10-25 Thread Parham Doustdar
Hi Dane,

I haven’t really been able to measure the delay accurately. However, the 0.25
that you mention seems to be about right. Maybe it’s that I’m not used to words
being missed as I arrow around quickly through a text.

I have been able to
fix the issues a bit by switching to Vocalizer voices. At least, I’m not
missing any text while I’m moving quickly around.

What I’m not understanding is why there is a delay after the voice tones and
before VO speaks; is this intentional? Is it possible to turn it off?

Re: Voiceover Sluggishness

2013-10-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
Your observations are quite interesting.

I have observed a slight delay between the time a key is pressed and the time
Voiceover responds but its nowhere near 0.5 seconds, about 0.25 seconds would
be far more accurate in my case.

I'm using an iMac Quad Core I5 machine but I'm not using any of the built-in
voices that come with Voiceover, I'm using Peter Infovox.

I have a Mac Mini 2 Dio Core 1.66GHZ machine in the lounge using Kare - high
quality voice -, on that machine Voiceover is behaving as expected and I
haven't seen any sluggishness or delays whatever and that does surprise me when
I think it over now, if any such problems were to occur or make themselves
heard then surely the Mac Mini machine I have would be it given its an older
technology, the display doesn't quite match the machine more than likely and so
on.

Anyway, point being there's a little delay but its not enough to cause any
major issues here.

The "Hide" command only hides the window of the current application. The "Hide
Others" command hides all of the other windows, leaving only the current
application's window visible. I guess it is used to minimise clutter on the
screen. As you have found, this will not hide the application from the app
switcher.

VMWare Fusion 6.0.1

2013-10-25 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi all

An updated version of Fusion 6 was released on 24 September 2013. For the
benefit of any member wishing to download this, I am placing the files in our
DropBox and will submit direct URLs to the group shortly. This is a courtesy
offering so that people do not have to navigate the minefield of the VMWAre
website.

I shall provide links to the versions of Fusion with and without the McAfee
antivirus utilities. The Light version is only about half the size of the full
installer. In just a few minutes I will send the links to both files.

Kind regards

Voiceover Sluggishness

2013-10-25 Thread Parham Doustdar
Hi,

I had spoken to a friend regarding the sluggishness I’m experiencing with my
Mac Mini, even though its processor is core I7 and it has 4 GB of DDR3 ram. He
had guessed that it may be related to the lack of displays. However, right now
I’m finding that it is, in fact, not.

Thanks.

FaceTime Still Not Working

2013-10-25 Thread Parham Doustdar
Hi,

I found a temporary display. While this has made the “Busy” announcement in
AppStore go away, the issue with FaceTime is still there.

When I open FaceTime, I see only close, minimize and zoom. Going into the menus
and choosing preferences (or pressing command+comma) tells me “Preferences…”
but nothing else; it merely serves to make the preferences menu item dimmed
from then on.

Is this because I have no webcam on my Mac Mini?

Thanks.

I just hope I can do track changes, since I assume when your essay is returned,
any comments in red, will be either ignored, or changed as to what the tutor
would like you to insert. If we cannot do track changes, how are we supposed to
know what our teacher comments are, and what changes I have recommended?

Re: Automatically hearing format attributes?

2013-10-25 Thread Christopher Gilland
Never mind guys. I figured it out.

I didn’t realize that there was a setting in the text tab of Verbosity that
does precisely what I was wanting to do.

Now, I'm feeling really, utterly stupid.

Chris.

Advanced Chess Programs on the Mac [was: Re: got the update but]

2013-10-25 Thread Esther
Hi Chris and John,

I think John is looking for a more advanced level of chess playing. My
suggestion would be to contact the people at Shredder Chess. That's certainly
among the top chess programs for iOS, and it's also one of the programs that
was made accessible to VoiceOver users through developer response to user
requests. The have chess programs for the Mac, so they might be able to make
these accessible to VoiceOver.

Here's their product web page for Mac software:
• Shredder Computer Chess Macintosh products:
http://www.shredderchess.com/chess-software/macintosh.html

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Automatically hearing format attributes?

2013-10-25 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
So, here's the deal. I want to set up an activity for Pages. The thing is,
I want to have my verbosity set in such a way that when reading through a
document, be it line by line, or with a say all, doesn't matter, if it hits
text that is say centered, or right aligned, or maybe that is bold or italic
or underlined, I want Voiceover to notify me of this before continuing to
read. For instance, "I was..." then in a higher pitch... Bold... "so mad
that I screamed." This way, I'd know without a doubt that the word "so..."
was in bold face. Soon, I'm going to be writing an essay for my study, and
it will be absolutely essential that I am able to determine these things
when proof reading.

I know about hitting vo+T, to tell me the attributes at the insertion point,
but, I don't want to manually query things. I may not always know in the
first place what is formatted differently, and that's! what I'm trying to
determine. I do need to be able to use vo+T, yeah, definitely, but I need
to also on the fly be able to skim through a file, and know exactly what is
formatted normally, and what has separately been centered, italicized,
written in a bigger font, etc. So, ultimately what I'm asking is, can I
have Voiceover in this activity be configured in such of a way that it would
automatically announce these things? Before anyone asks if I tactally could
tell, no. I can't. I don't have a braille display. Dang it do I wish I
did though!

John, Chess should be on the Mac already, and it is totally 100% Voiceover

Shame! wonder of Apple will think about changing the status quo in the future
given that so many people use IOS devices as "Computers".

Ring Tones And Stand Alone IOS Devices

2013-10-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

This I have to admit to being a damn good question on behalf of a friend who
wants to send some ring tones he's made to his wife's iPhone and iPad.

Both devices are "Stand Alone" devices meaning that they're not associated with
any computers of any kind so the iPhone and iPad are used as computers if you
like.

So how to get these files recognised as Ring Tones without using iTunes or a
computer or is this task just too mind mangling and put into the category of
"Impossible" .

Hiding A Window From Command+Tab

Hi.

On Windows, I use the “minimize to tray” functionality for apps such as
messengers, so that they won’t be in my way when alt-tabbing.

Is there such a thing in Mac? If so, what is it called?

Thanks.
