Cursor in an e-mail
Hi, since two weeks or so I have an issue with Mail. Normally when opening an e-mail I can use arrow up or down to move in the e-mail text. That doesn't work anymore. When I press arrow down it just reads the first line and then nothing more. VO plus arrow keys still work but not just arrow keys. Quick Nav is off of course. That's quite annoying because I'm no longer able to select text in an e-mail to quote something. Has anyone an idea what's going on here and what todo? Re: someone using adium?
I use it for all of my messengers without growl. Growl actually got on my nerves, so when I updated to Lion I didn't put growl back on. Everything works like it should after I set it up to speak the things I needed. Hello, you mean it talks with voiceover activated? System messages, adium messages, are read by adium voice without problems? To get this result I must turn voiceover off! So, till I solve this annoyance, I just adopted this solution: read also sent messages aloud. then blindly write on keyboard with voiceover turned off, press enter and wait. Re: Something I just Learned With Skype and Growl
shawn, as I wrote in my other message called someone using adium? growl speaks. But, only with voiceover turned off! that makes me really laugh 2012/3/21, Mark BurningHawk Baxter markbaxte...@gmail.com: Snip Also, Mark, Growl uses the main system voice so if you wanted to make changes to the voice, whether you want to change rate and pitch or the person altogether, you would have to go into system prefs and change any preferences there. /snip With all respect, please excuse me but the voice Growl uses, while it may be Alex, speaks with different rate and tone from my system voice, which is used for other self-voicing programs. If Growl is using the system voice, it's doing so without obeying the settings I changed in Preferences. That's my experience. Also, even when I check Hide all notifications, in Growl, Skype will still tell me who comes on or off line, and announce events themselves, if not their text content; this is done with the system voice as I have pre-set it. Growl, when it is allow to speak all notifications, uses a much slower version. Correct me if something is wrong; well I do not know exact English words because I have adium in my mother language but the concept is the same! 1. opening the preference dialog box 2. interacting with the toolbar and choosing events 3. choosing preferred event - for example, received message 4. setting it up with read aloud It asks to give a name to the set of event notifications, I just called it audio notification - copy of course you can add as many events you want with the events table, pressing the add button at the end of window. The funny thing is, that even if it's set correctly, it speaks only if voiceover is turned off! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: someone using adium?
Ok, almost the same except steps 4 and 5. When you do steps one and two, if you look there will be a area where it says default. If you leave that and then go to your step three and do everything there, pick an event, tell it to speak, play a sound and whatever else you want, once you press ok it should ask if you want to have the name say default copy. Say yes there and then go through the rest of the events you want to change and they will all be under the default copy section. That should work. Re: Something I just Learned With Skype and Growl
Jenny, here's how to solve this trouble. when it says growl is in the background, go through windows by command+tab (i am not sure the voiceover command to switch among applications, ctrl+options+f1+f1, or double-tap with 2 finger to the left with trackpad, works) anyway: when you reach growl, it would say: growl has no windows then, go to the dock with ctrl+f3 or the dedicated voiceover command. look for the Growl icon, then, control+option+shift+m. you should find a menu popping up, and there you'd find the growl preferences! if the menu item is grayed, you should go up with up arrow and find reactivate growl I wasted one hour behind this issue! 2012/3/21, Jenny Keller jlperd...@gmail.com: I have problems with growl too. Re: Drobo dashboard, is it accessible?
No, the DroBo dash board is not accessible, from both an accessibility and cost point, the NetGear ReadyNAS appliances are both accessible, using an HTML based interface, but also far cheaper and just as reliable in my experience. They also take advantage of a sort of expandable flexible RAID solution NetGear call X-RAID, essentially the same as Beyond RAID which DroBo uses. Re: download window with lion
Hi esther. I have had this issue on my Macbook Pro since Snowleopard. I find it even more weird that this doesn't happen on all Macbook Pro 15 inch models. I've been very confused regarding this issue which is the reason for I haven't reported this to Apple. I just don't know how to explain the issue good enough because I do have lots of different focusing issues while browsing the internet using Safari. Well, I'll see if I can explain all these issues and report them to accessibility. Best regards: Søren Jensen Mail MSN: s...@coolfortheblind.dk Website: http://www.coolfortheblind.dk/ Den 20/03/2012 kl. 21.09 skrev Esther: Hi Søren, No, I've never had a MacBook larger than 13 inches. I do note that the major reason I've found to delay upgrades between major releases of Mac OS X is usually the new behavior of Safari. Also, the first system versions after a new release may show up more VoiceOver focus issues than previously experienced in mature, stable releases. Thanks for reporting on your experience. I can check this by navigating to the menu bar with either ctrl F2 or VO m, then going to the View menu and arrowing down. If I check this menu before toggling to full screen mode, the first entry shows as Show Toolbar. And in this mode, with my toolbar hidden, when I press ctrl option l there is no downloads window displayed, even though VoiceOver says Show Downloads. If I show my toolbar, either by using the View menu option or the shortcut for toggling the toolbar between show and hide, which is ctrl shift backslash on an English language input keyboard, then the downloads window will show up when I press ctrl option l. Similarly, making Safari run in full screen mode by toggling this on with command ctrl f will also let my downloads window show up when I press ctrl option l. But what happens here is that my toolbar is forcibly shown when I'm in full screen mode. If I navigate to the menu bar and check the View menu while in full screen mode, the first menu entry will show up as Hide Toolbar and will also be announced as dimmed, indicating that I can't change this. Furthermore, I can test whether the toolbar is present by using the shortcut ctrl F5 for navigating to the toolbar. When my toolbar is hidden, pressing ctrl F5 will not take me to the toolbar, because it's hidden. As previously stated, in this mode I can't see the downloads window when I press command option l. If I show my toolbar, and am not in full screen mode, then pressing ctrl F5 takes me to the Back button of the toolbar. Now, even if my toolbar is hidden when I am not in full screen mode, once I press command ctrl f, and VoiceOver says Enter Full Screen, it becomes visible. If I press ctrl F5, I'll be taken to the Back button, and I check the View menu, Hide Toolbar appears as dimmed. And because the toolbar is now forcibly shown, even though it was originally hidden when not in full screen mode, pressing command option l now shows me my downloads folder. I wonder if the difference in behavior, where I can view the downloads folder when the toolbar is not hidden without having to run Safari in full screen mode, is another one of those instances of English-specific shortcut key mapping? I know that UK users are also able to view the downloads folder if their toolbar is not hidden, without having to put Safari into full screen mode. Re: Can the iPhone be used as a Magnifier?
Hello Esther, David, Ricardo and others, I would like to thank you for your input. I would have gotten back to you earlier, but I myself have been running back and forth from eye doctor to eye doctor and have hardly had the time to even take a breather. I will refer my eye doctor to the VisionAssist device and let her take it from there. My thanks to all who provided input, Mike On 18,Mar,2012, at 7:39 PM, Esther wrote: Hello all, I just realized that what we should do is have a low-vision user who has the new iPad with the camera that is as good as the iPhone 4's, and who also has the Prizmo OCR app, try using VisionAssist. They can take a screen capture by simultaneously pressing and then releasing the sleep/wake button (at the top) and the home button. Then they can try to run Prizmo using the last image stored in the camera roll instead of taking a picture through the camera. After selecting Text on the main Prizmo screen, they would flick right past the Camera button to the Album button and double tap that. Then, on the Photo Album screen they would double tap Camera Roll. On the Camera Roll screen, they would do a four finger tap on the bottom half of the screen to go to the last element on the screen -- or alternatively touch the bottom of the screen just above the Home button -- to hear 7 photos (or however many there are) announced. Then they would flick left to the last photo, which will be announced as Photo IMG some number, image, double tap to open, and double tap the screenshot. I'm not sure how well the default OCR works if the contrast scheme is reversed -- there's an adjustment control called white picker that lets you adjust this, but it requires vision. In any case, this would be an interesting exercise. Some low-vision user with a new iPad could check this out, Any takers? Garth, are you interested? You want to type in VisionAssist with no space between Vision and Assist. The Vision Assist app with the space between the two words is $0.99, for iPhone only, and is supposed to be an ambient night vision aid. The app that David mentioned is universal binary, works for people who have low-light difficulties, such as age-related macular degeneracy, glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. It also advertises support for VoiceOver and can be used to improve contrast as well as magnification. This does quite a bit more than most magnification apps, and may be of considerable interest to low-vision users on the list. (It may go beyond what Mike's doctor was asking for, however.) This app will work on every Apple device that has a camera, and also has the ability to be used wirelessly with an Apple TV to magnify an image and display it on a large-screen TV or monitor. It sounds like a great addition for a low-vision user who has an iPad with a camera. However, the current price is $5.99. It's been bouncing around from an initial price of $6.99, then reduced for a period to $3.99, then raised again to $6.99, and most recently dropped to $5.99. Jason, I looked at the Apple TV's, but decided to go the Mini Route. The main reason is that the Mini will also become the family and video storage center. My wife is starting to venture into photography, and the Mini on the larger screen will be the best way for her to look over her photos.. Additionally, I am picking up a pair of iPads for the home, which will act as the laptops while we travel. I picked up Apple's bluetooth touch pad yesterday, after a long chat with the Apple Tech folks at the local store. Great tip from you all. Furthermore, I spoke with a eye doc in the area who is also a Apple geek. Re: Drobo dashboard, is it accessible?
Doug, I make no promises and I cannot even tell you what will come of this. However, I have been working through a vendor who has connected me to a nice young lady named Abby at Drobo and she is going to start researching things on her end. I would love to have some resources on how Java-based apps can be made accessible. I suspect the reason they went this route is to be cross-platform compatible. THe more folks I know that want access to the Drobo, the more likely I can make some headway because it is all about the level of demand and the potential market for these products. On Mar 20, 2012, at 9:28 PM, Doug Lawlor wrote: Hi Skott, As of this writing Drobo Dashboard is not accessible. When you launch the program VoiceOver does not see the program's controls. Re: Drobo dashboard, is it accessible?
Neil I hear you, but there is no reason not to explore the possibility to make the dashboard accessible as well. I have a WD solution that has a pretty difficult html interface and it gets the job done as well. However, I would certainly not discourage anyone from using a solution just because of the price or interface if that is what they really wanted to use. I do not know much about the Net Gear products, but I assume they allow you to hotswap drives as well? On Mar 21, 2012, at 8:30 AM, Neil Barnfather - TalkNav wrote: No, the DroBo dash board is not accessible, from both an accessibility and cost point, the NetGear ReadyNAS appliances are both accessible, using an HTML based interface, but also far cheaper and just as reliable in my experience. They also take advantage of a sort of expandable flexible RAID solution NetGear call X-RAID, essentially the same as Beyond RAID which DroBo uses. anyone else noticing mail.app wierdness?
hello all.. I seem to be encountering some weirdness of late with mail.app and hotmail.com. the weirdness is the fact that mail.app will work normally and then kick up a dialog box saying that hotmail.com rejected my password. since I have not changed my password in a long time and I routinely check the hotmail site junk folder from their web interface, I am at a loss as to what is actually causing this. anyone here a mail.app guru? -eric -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: anyone else noticing mail.app wierdness?
oh yeah, I also get one other problem (unrelated to mail.app): any attempt to do anything more than simply browse the hotmail site results in their non-standard javascript crashing Safari (and webkit). its getting to be a real pain. Since I don't have windows (nor a spare machine to put it on), I am stuck with messages in the spam folder that are not spam. anyone have any clues on how to work around this? -eric On Mar 21, 2012, at 10:38 PM, Ricardo Walker wrote: Hi, I've been seeing this all day as well.
