MI MapInfo Users map
Following the mail today I have had a number of new requests for inclusion in the tab file based map of everyone on the list. It is presently about 300 , not all users but covers a wide variety of users and also the more active members. Anyone who subscribes to the list and is capable of finding the long lat for their favoured work location can fill in a form on the below mentioned web site, I will update the map over the next month and update the website tab file and announce on the list. Yes you are right and why ??? I often simply edit the header info in the tab or wor to downspec the version statement and I can open many new mapinfo files even in 4.1 , 4.1 16 bit (which we use for a few custom mbx's we had built) , 4 for PowerMac and 4.5 so I can't see why MI cannot at least allow some backward compatibility. If you of course are reliant on using some of the more obscure recent line styles improvements, thematic mapping additions or need the over 36,000 node polygons and lines that may fairly well restrict your ability. Welcoming the improvements in linestyle sizes and options in 4.5, we mainly use thematic mapping to alter line styles rather than in the basic data to ensure older versions can remain functional. Since my department budget for software was cut 60% this year I am looking at what maintenance contracts we have, and will be looking at sustaining a variety of version for a few another year since I simply make a bigger rod for my own back each time I upgrade mapinfo and we lose an existing user until this problem is resolved by whatever action. This is making this a real issue to me. I do not see any good reason why in its 'save table as ', and 'save workspace as' options they cannot allow users to choose to save files as older 4.* types not simply as version 2. If Adobe and Microsoft are able to offer this feature with #350 notes software why can't Mapinfo. Is an answer needed! >Hi Ole Basically the problem is not too disimilar if you run a copy of any version pre 4.5 with 4.5 or later, one of the problems is caused by the increase in node limit in polygons, as well as the line style improvements with 4.5, I have however frequently been able to use a text editor on the tab file and change the version number to 4 and then files open effortlessly in MI 4 for pc or for PowerMac a copy of which I still manage to get a lot of life from, although improvements wit hraster file formats such as sid or ecw may well finish it off long before it should really come to its economic end. MI availability of mbx to change colour registry from 8 to 24 bit colour
A while ago on the list were details of a freeware mbx that allowed users to change their windows registry from 8 to 24 bit from within mapinfo. I saw it on a web site, but can not remember the name of the tool or its location, if anyone can point me to the right place I would be grateful, I have searched the list archive on www.mapinfo.com to no avail NO doubt the answer will be winging it's way in minutes so thanks to those who have helped me sort this one out regards Adrian PS I note my original mapinfo guide in pdf free of the directions site is now getting a bit long in the tooth although it is very popular. MI Summary: Opening Mr Sid images with co-ordinates in .sdw format
Thanks to Tom , Greg and all the others who replied to this, Before I needed to try world reg I cracked the problem using MI 5.5 and MrSid viewer 2.0 for PC, I had sid files without the needed tab files. I can see the images have co-ordinate information as I move the pointer, this info is held in the .sdw files, I tried to export a tiff from the the viewer but it would would only generate .tfw (world ) files for use with Arc View. If, however, you view the whole image in the viewer and open the export window dialogue box it gives the co-ordinate location for top, bottom, left and right edges. I had no projection info (which I suspect would be given if a tab file could be created and then opened in a text editor) Since the co-ordinates given were clearly UK Ord Survey, I opened the sid file In MI Pro 5.5 and selected the register option and guessed the co-ordinate / projection as British OS. I then zoomed right into pixel view and made my first point the top left hand corner, assigning the left and top co-ordinate, moving around each corner in turn, the image opened and I overlayed some distinct polygon vector stuff, it displayed in the right area and was the correct shape, I then did the same trick on adjacent Sid files which all appear to tile perfectly. Any UK users wanting to practice this routine for themselves if you have access to the recent Sunday Times CD with the UK Colour landsat tiles, that are also in the same Sid format, these make suitable test material for mastering the technique. best wishes and again thanks for all your help Adrian 1/ WorldReg Ver. 4.0 supports the .sdw format (among several others) for batch orientated, automated MapInfo raster file registration. MI follow onto MrSid and sdw files query
Thanks for those that responded, back on top of this now, but my e-mails are at home. However I have started to export tiffs as suggested with the belief that as well as tfw files tabs are created. MI Opening Mr Sid images with co-ordinates in .sdw format--- help
Hi mappers I have acquired some imaging in Mr Sid format, it's registered in a seperate .sdw file I presume this is either an esri format or is used by mr sid. MI Re: poor mapinfo support for file opening in older versions
Thanks Cattaneo fro bringing this one up I have found that Mapinfo has a very poor backwards support for file formats. We started originally with v4 16 bit and for most but not all users have moved up each version thru maintenance to 5.5. When we switched to 4.5 we expected problems in backwards compatibility due to the node and line type changes, due to mbx needs and old copies of 4.1 floating about we kept a 16 bit version of 4.1 running to maintain compaltibility of our corporate map data and most data is maintained to match older line styles, the 32.000 node plines and polys are only rarely encountered. We have found the saving of files which should not constitute a problem to older version a total mess. All the old 4.1 and even mac versions report table x.tab cannot be opened but version 4.5 can. A simple number change in a text editor fixes the tab file , older versions in nearly all situations then open file. This process apart from time consuming is an alien concept to most of our users who are trying to send maps to collegues with older versions. I don't expect that MI go as far as MS in the way it produces file opening plugins for older versions but Why oh why can Mapinfo not implement a 'save a V4.0' option in the file>save table/workspace menu for workspaces and tables like it does for v2 thereby reducing organisations with multiple platforms / version this hassle. MI Re: printing maps
Marjo I am sure you have had a number of replies by now but if not, the save window as option is junk without fiddling to make image sizes a lot greater than you screen , it is effectively a screen dump and does it at monitor resolution 72dpi which makes it useless for printing, the best way is to spend money. again.and buy a professional graphics package such as Adobe Illustrator or Freehand and a peice of software from Avenza called map publisher, this allows the latter to read mapinfo files to recreate the map and you then use the superior graphic power of that software to save and print maps at a better resolution. As to sending maps by e-mail my best answer is if the recipient has not got mapinfo, Adobe Acrobat is the best bet it is at least cheap and the reader software is free and available immediatly off the internet although it comes with most computers these days. If you buy Illustrator it can save your map directly to .pdf which is the Acrobat formt, I have however found that Illustrators pdf option does not always properly incorporate fonts which can give difficulty if the file is sent to another machine without your fonts installed. It will try to make a best guess but it doesn't always pick the right alternative, this is especially so with Mapinfo symbol fonts. If you are sendin to mapinfo users who have the same base maps, if you are simply trying to pass over some map related annotations, you could use a workspace but this will be difficult if the directory structure for the data is different on the 2 computers. I have however found after being sent workspaces by unknowing users at work, I have been able to read the workspace in a text editor, recreate the map layers on my computer save it as a workspace and then copy and paste the relevant parts out of the workspace that relate to the 'cosmetic' components whic hare then rescued and can be viewed. The last option although not difficult should be avoided if the recipient is not familiar with workspace make up or text editing. Hi Russ sorry it's taken a week, firstly I have found when using ps drivers on PC's it defaults to the prn option because of the stupidity of dos. I have found before that by simply renaming the .prn to ps has enabled me to carry on with a job, it was a long time ago so my mind is a bit hazy. As far as macs go, the info about a file is not restricted to *.abc but a seperate resource fork where information is also stored on the actual creator application. This is the fundemental reason why pc's can't read standard mac files as they need the dos suffix which mac's dont use, however macs don't need a resouce fork ,and can open pc files by using the dos suffix to identify the file type. Most cross platform software tend to have a component which recognises if you add a dos suffix to a file name and then jigggles with the file to make it pc readable. Whereas with a pc you tell it which application it must use to open *.eps witha mac it first looks using the resource fork to see if you have the application and if not it then gives you a list of applications it feels will open that file. Alternatively it is not bound to honour any dos suffix, it is merely part of the file name eg in photoshop, you can save a tif file and call it picture.jpg, it will save it, and any mac app that opens tiff will will happily open it because the resource fork says it's a tif, if you send the file to a pc as windows throws a wobbler because it tries to open the file as jpg which it is clearly not. Where there is no resource fork such as with a file created on a PC, macs trust your intelligence and generally allow you to try to open it up in any application hence I think if you have file.prn and rename it file.ps the mac will treat it as a postscript if you open it in an application that handles ps assuming my first paragraph is correct As regards the save window as route, I would forget it as the PC has the added benefit of being able to save as a Photoshop 3 file but doing so takes a screen grab with the resolution at 72dpi To work on such files for publication is the pigs ear = silk purse construction method. A somewhat wierd halfway house is to when saving window set the size of the file to a screen size much larger than your monitor, a mac studio could get some improvement by increasing the resolution whilst reducing the image size. One problem with the postscript option is that it can sometimes prove to be a problem if special fonts, such as mapinfo symbols, are not availble on the recipients computer, it is possible that providing the file as both *.ps and *.eps can help. As a frequent exponent of the virtues of pdf... I have found version 3 to be perfectly adequate and until MI bought out proviewer we used it as a our free viewer. I agree with James Marlow that raster printing can be a bit raggedy this is because of the use by Adobe of JPEG compression to help in file size reduction, however with 3 and 4 using distiller and adjusting the settings if you choose zip as the compression method rasters print in far better clarity. It is a great tool wether you want to supply maps by electronic means allowing the user the choice of printing or not.
