[MBZ] OM617 conversion to generator

We are starting to have several power outages where I stay and I was
wondering about getting a spare OM617 ( non turbo ) and hooking it up to
an alternator and powering my home . It is a bit of overkill but it also
servers the purpose of having a hot standby OM617 on call. ( I have 3
other vehicles with this engine.) The problem I foresee is how to govern
the engine to run at a constant 3000 rpm in order to maintain a stable
voltage and frequency under varying load. Can the existing MW pump be
converted to operate in constant rpm mode?

As has been suggested already, any of the fine non-foamy
detergents as used in automatic washing machines of various
sorts ought to do it, or TSP.

Nothing we've been discussing does anything about [iron] rust.
Merely calcium scale and the like.

What do you suggest to deoil the system?

On my 1958 180D the block drain valve is completely blocked and so I
cannot drain water out the block. Should I still derust it with the rist
of rust particals from elsewhere dropping down to the lowest point and
then not getting out?

That would be my guess...  if you don't have gauges, etc. I don't think 
a mechanic would charge it per Jim's method anyway (not that there is 
anything wrong with it, but I just don't think they would).

IMO, I wouldn't worry about it if the can looks old.  I can understand 
the new cans being relabeled, but I think making a can look old is more 
difficult than just relabeling something. I'm not a fraud expert though ;)

[MBZ] Loss of power, shuddering upon cold takeoff (manual tranny)

This should be an easy one:

When the 240D is not warmed up yet, and I try to take off on a hill, I
get this shuddering and it loses power. I am thinking it feels like
the clutch is slipping (but I thought clutch slippage was a more
smooth loss of power and resultant engine revving).

Could it be that the engine is not warmed up enough to produce
sufficient power for the task and is thus sort of giving up?

I think I have a good clutch in there. Can a cold clutch act like this?

Anyway, I'll stop theorizing and let the question stand.

For you, substitute celery stalks and other appropriate veggies that could
clog a drain.
A combination of a drain cleaner so strong that a couple of drops burned two
$.50 size holes in a shop towel, and the expanding ball insert directly off
the 220 pump finally opened it up.  3 hardware stores, 4 days of on and off
working on it and almost $100 later it is good as new.  I don't ever want to
see ham salad again, even in pictures.

The 560SEL looks nice, but I never knew they were 5 cylinder engines.  At
least that is all the ones that were firing on this one.  Interior was fair
to good, body good, but AC control problems and a questionable AC system,
and @$400 for a professional tune up [ok, I would probably try that myself]
to find out if the AC was shutting off from a rev sensor, plus the other
problems mentioned.  Some of the hoses also looked to be cracking.  I took a
lesson from our list mom and told him for $700 [had to outbid Kaleb] maybe
it would be worth a chance, but not the $2,200 he was asking.  My guess is
he will just keep it to spite folks like me.

I have augmented a failing R12 system with propane.  (I found
that the Schrader valve was loose, explaining the loss.)

No.  But you will eventually.  I use gauges, and when the pressures
just don't work out and it doesn't cool right I just vacuum and start
over.

Looks like some of you got good Vanagons.  Mine was supposed to be a very
nice model, but quickly was named 'The Anti-Christ' and continued to earn
that name for the year I had it.  I think the door handles worked pretty
well, but other than that about all I can say is it didn't kill me.

Hey, my mom has a Vanagon with that system.  I always thought that even if
it doesn't cool all that well, at least you can get at the evaporator easily
if it leaks!  But where's the condensor, I wonder?
In the front with the radiator?  Are there R-12 pipes running under the car
alongside those ridiculously long coolant lines that always leak?

The Citra-Solv MIGHT make a good de-oiler, but Blue Dawn, Tide or Spic 
and Span are cheaper and should do as good a job.

[MBZ] Timing Chain parts

I know I've posted about this before, but I want to make sure everyone has a
chance to hear about it.  I have all the parts someone would need to change
the timing chain in a 617 engine.  I bought them for a 1982 300SD
Turbodiesel that I had, but have since junked that car.  These parts should
also work in other cars from 1980-1985 with a 5-cyl diesel engine.  I am
looking for ~$100 for everything all together, but shoot me your best
offer.  I need to get rid of these things and it would be a shame for me and
someone in search of these parts to have to throw them away.

ok - the jim c.  method of "blending on the fly"  - what would
I add to my R12 and how would I do it?

do I have to remove the r12 and fill with the other stuff?

It may be easier to go to the corner mechanic and have a can of R12 put 
in --

BTW, I am getting my EPA certification so I can buy some r12 and keep it for 
the future.  But the issue of getting cans of "mystery Freon" is still a 
concern --

1300, Delo400, or anyother lesser grade oil.  You bring it, I'll clean it.  I

Hey, my mom has a Vanagon with that system.  I always thought that
even if it doesn't cool all that well, at least you can get at the
evaporator easily if it leaks!  But where's the condensor, I wonder?
In the front with the radiator?  Are there R-12 pipes running under
the car alongside those ridiculously long coolant lines that always
leak?

I love the Gaz d' Cathey method precisely because I can top-up R12
"on-the-fly".  I just did my once a year top-up in the Vanagon (~$7), and
recorded 33 degree vent temps in the front.   Vanagons have the evaporator
hung from the ceiling in the rear, with a long channel of ductwork carrying
the cool air all the way forward.  It's a small miracle that I get any
coolness factor at all, let alone near freezing temps up there.   As an
aside, one thing I really dig about the overhead design is that I can train
one of the vents to blow on the backside of my head and neck--very cool.

WRONG! Read section 20-015 in the 601 engine manual (or the same section 
in other manuals) on cleaning the cooling system or any chemistry text 
on dissolving salt scale. Citric acid (or any acid) will allow the 
lime/calcium/scale to go into solution. It does NOTHING for oil. A 
deoiling compound is required.

Mercedes lists one available in Europe. Liquid Tide works rather well 
and I expect that Blue Dawn dishwashing detergent would work but I've 
never tried it for that purpose.

I think it's better to disconnect hoses and flush manually.  This avoids a
potential failure/leak from the Prestone fitting.  More important, it lets
you selectively flush the system as it is important not to flush debris into
the old Chrysler ACC servo (pre 1981, I think).  The smooth ended hose
nozzles sold at dollar stores fit the heater hoses nicely for back flushing
the heater core and other hoses (just don't flush into the ACC servo).  You
can/should flush the servo or monovalve but with clean water only.  Then
flush the radiator and motor.

Actually it does not deoil the system, that is supposed to be done before 
doing the citric acid.  The acid gets rid of the deposits.

Thanks Hendrik - I might discover a new way to live high on the hog  If
I like it I will be taking it to my nephew to check out.  That all depends
on IF this latest attempt [with an expanding ball] to clear my kitchen drain
works.  My Darling wife dumped two quarts of leftover ham salad down the
sink [and we have had that discussion before].  All clear for the first 8',
the a 90 degree down to another 90 degree and nothing I could find would get
there.  NOTE to other DIY'ers: those expanding ball drain clearers [or at
least the ones I used] did nothing until I turned on the hot water.  Then it
expanded.  Have not re installed all the pipes yet to see if it worked, but
it sounded like it did.

Nothing more expensive than a cheap Merc.
Check for rust, auto tranny operation and how the engine starts cold.
A new seat base and window winder are small fry in the scheme of things. The
air con could be just a couple of O rings or more expesnive than that but no
way of telling until the system has some dye in it.
For 2.2k you can't expect too much when you are buying a car that was a lot
of money to buy new.
Although if you do end up buying this car, check for drugs throughout it. 
Apparently these machines are favoured by middle level drug dealers due to
the status and performance.
You do hear urban legends about people buying used top end luxury cars and
finding stuff like drugs, money and/or guns hidden within them.

In the August issue of Car & Driver, Csaba (Chubba) Csere,   provides 
interesting reading on how much it cost Daimler to own Chrysler for 7  years.  
Having 
paid 36 billion for Chrysler and then selling it for only  7.5 billion is bad 
enough, but Csaba goes on to say that the 7.5 billion  received by Daimler, 
most went back to the new Chrysler Co..

This is exactly what I'm afraid of---what's to stop a crook from
packaging R22 (or something that would work even less well in an R12
system, like R134a) the same way?

No. They come out when you drain the block and when you flush it with
clear water.

Nothing more expensive than a cheap Merc.
Check for rust, auto tranny operation and how the engine starts cold.
A new seat base and window winder are small fry in the scheme of things. The 
air con could be just a couple of O rings or more expesnive than that but no 
way of telling until the system has some dye in it.
For 2.2k you can't expect too much when you are buying a car that was a lot 
of money to buy new.
Although if you do end up buying this car, check for drugs throughout it. 
Apparently these machines are favoured by middle level drug dealers due to 
the status and performance.
You do hear urban legends about people buying used top end luxury cars and 
finding stuff like drugs, money and/or guns hidden within them.

[MBZ] '89 560SEL

Hi - I'm still looking for a reasonably cheap vehicle for my daughter to
drive while awaiting the ability to buy Donald's 300SEL.  A guy a few miles
South of me has a 1989 560SEL with 200,080 miles and 'needs some Freon'.   I
know these can be expensive to get into decent shape if not cared for
properly.  What should I look for should I go check this one out?  He says
that one of the widows needs 'some gear thing', and is asking $2,200. 
 
<<<  I have owned this car since Christmas of 2005 and must part with it at
this price for the next 24 hours only. 
The front seats on bottom need recovering...they have duct tape covering the
leather. Belts, hoses, water pump, and valve cover gaskets replaced approx
800 miles ago.
  
HI again  there is a small dent that can be popped out on the hood
noticeable when one looks at an angle.  Also one on the rear part on the
side also barely noticeable but there.  I would put in some refridgerant in
the A.C. as I never have and this summer it needs it.  Accsessories all work
however the driver's window needs a gear piece replaced I would figure on
five hundred at a dealer.
 
NO rust good stereo central vacuum etc and it would be a lot eaiser to just
talk by phone for any other details, the sunroof is just fine and never
leaks or makes any unusual noises 

Never had any failures or troubles. Enjoy, I have. Stephen

I also thought that the fuel distributer was the problem on my SLC -
turned out to be ALL the rubber in the fuel and intake system was rock
hard and leaking, as well as all the bolts on the right side of the
intake manifold were finger loose --
