Re: [MBZ] Snowmaggeddon Part Deux

2015-02-03 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
That was also my question. When mowing the lawn, I try to make circles instead
of going back and forth. One can cover more ground more quickly that way.
Circles would be too hard with a snow blower, but back and forth, turning at
each end, would seem to be more efficient.

Thank you.

No, her cataract surgery did not cause the additional problems.

She has been a diabetic for 55 years. The retinopathy (leaking blood
vessels in the retina) that required the two vitrectomies was a diabetes
complication.

> I understand cataract surgery is flawless these days, but I still

I can understand your hesitation. Her cataract surgeries went well.

For some of those who have cataract surgery (particularly diabetics), the
capsule that holds the lens gets cloudy and obscures the vision (which is
what happened to Shirley). A quick surgery with a YAG laser to cut radial
slots in the capsule behind the lens solves the problem. When the pieces
between the slots are freed up by the laser, surface tension causes them
to fold back out of the way, allowing the light to pass and restore
vision.

> Plus, $$ is a problem getting this done. Any information from anyone
> else? Tell me surgery is okay and inexpensive.

Cataract surgery is okay, but is not inexpensive. Our local eye doctor
establishment discounts their charges for people without insurance to
$2500 per eye. I don't know how much they would charge for a capsulotomy
without insurance, but they billed our insurance something like $700 for
the procedure.

Yeah, it does look pretty cool -- pun intended.

What make and model of snow blower?

How many horsepower? (I see something in your garage -- your air
compressor, I think -- is 2.5 HP and 21 gallons.)

Why all the backward movement when you are blowing to the side?
Why not turn around, turn the spout, and keep on going?

$3,000 for the set seems a bit much, since none run, one is missing an
engine.

"slight rust" "ran when parked" "AC blows cold" ;))

OTOH, project cars of substance... perhaps..

Re: [MBZ] First and subsequent cars

2015-02-03 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

The '34 Chevies; the '33 was probably about the same; were some of the best
cars Chevy ever built. I had a '35 Chevy which was probably the worst car Chevy
ever built.

Someone in the family clan had one of those gasoline heaters which "were"
fantastic, but I don't remember them in the late '30s. I remember comments
about how dangerous they were, but don't remember anyone getting burned.

High school friend Charley had a '34 Chevy during WW-2. The muffler blew out so
he ran it straight pipe since new parts were unavailable, and there were no
mufflers in the local junkyard that would fit. He would load up 5 or 6 of us
high school boys and go roaring through our small town in 2nd gear right past
the police station. The town marshall never bothered him since Charley wasn't
speeding and he knew about the parts shortage.
Several of us learned to fly Civil Air Patrol (CAP) planes and Charley was one
of them, but he yearned to fly a low wing guy wired army trainer at the airport
that belonged to a local hatchery owner.
Charley "borrowed" it one evening after the FBO closed and had a great time
doing acrobatics. He ended his adventure by buzzing his girlfriends farmhouse,
but something went wrong and he crashed in her daddys corn field. The damage to
the plane wasn't too severe and Charley wasn't hurt. In restitution, Charley
had to spend several hours every day after school at the hatchery cleaning
cages and "shoveling sh*t" as he described it. Since Charley was basically a
good kid that nearly everyone liked, the hatchery owner finally took mercy on
him, taught him the fine points of flying the traimer, and let him fly it at
times since he was a natural pilot.

Charley dropped out of high school and joined the army, thinking he would be
sent to flying school, but the war was over in Europe soon after and Charley
unhappily went into the infantry.

Teenage daughters girlfriends father had a Dauphine. He heard about me
repairing the '67 Mercedes, so he asked via his daughter if I would look at his
Daughines problem. It was something to do with the left front wheel. I had
never before seen a design as unnecessarily complicated as it was after we got
it apart. I don't remember if we got it fixed or not, but I decided that if he
ever called me again to help him fix the Dauphine I would find some excuse not
to help him.
I didn't much care for him anyway since he was an extreme perfectionist who
looked down on anyone not as "perfect" as he was; including his family who were
a mess as you can well imagine. (His wife attempted suicide several times.)

Been getting message from MS program that I'm low on memory.
Accessed msconfig, and at the top of the page appeared the word "Korean". The
next line had the symbol for "type configuration setting" with the address:

Right clicking the symbol brought up 29 pages of Korean characters.

I'm running Malwarebytes (paid for professional program), AVG antivirus, and MS

A quick search of Google had nothing specific about this being known malware,

I have a hard time seeing how this can continue for the rest of my lifetime

An example from this morning goes something like >>> "don't email me, don't

It is like he is saying "I don't know why I bothered to list this because I am

Re: [MBZ] 71 220 Poor car

2015-02-03 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
When I was in college, I worked a few days a week as a lot boy at a used car
lot. In the back lot, they had an old 69 or 70 Buick Electra 225. A real
land barge. I asked one day if I should wash it. The old man told me he would
just as soon get rid of the car, but he said he would sell it for $60. I
have no idea how he came up with that number. But, I called a few friends at
School and 3 of us put up $20 each and bought the car. It actually started
and the tires held air. So, we bought it just to take it out to one of the
guys parents farm. We crashed it into trees, tried to tear out the
transmission by slamming it into reverse at 40 mph, we just had a demolition
derby with it. Finally, we accidentally busted the radiator and our fun was
over. We took the D tag off it and left it in the field. It was definitely
$20 worth of fun. I think my friend's dad rescued the car, fixed a few things
on it and sold it for $400-500.

If the jack points aren't rusty, it actually looks pretty solid. Could be a
decent project car if everything is there.

The strange gray band of paint around the bottom is weird, though.

Price is pretty optimistic considering it's a trailer car.

One would think that a lot of the mess one sees on the paint of that car would

"Ran when parked, AC blows cold." "slight body damage"

I really expected to see some bullet shots in the windshield to support the
"bullet proof glass" claim... ha..

Have to add that to the list:
"It will buff right out"
"Slight rust"
"Ac blows cold"
"Engine seized, but I can get it started"
"Ran when parked"

Classic...

Actually,, I like the model of the car.. I wonder how badly the frame is
tweaked from the front end impact?

Budget of $2.9tn in 2009

Jacked up budget to almost $4 trillion for this year

Millions of citizens still suffering from the economic downfall. More of them
feeding the greedy insurance companies. Fewer doctors available to treat
patients. Fewer healthcare facilities able to service the increased demand.
Appointments going from a week out to six weeks out. Looks like osamacare is
canadian healthcare of UK NHS.

Are we better than we were eight years ago? Not that I can see, nor can those
I work with. Unemployment has actually gone up this past quarter. Taxes are
going up as well.

In the 60s when VW could only be bought on a waiting list, someone
had little stick on signs for the WV switches that were
metzgereddeutsche . They were funny. The only one I remember is
the wiper switch label was "drizzleflippen"

maybe 15 years ago at the Boone and Scenic Valley RR they had a sign
in metzgereddeutsche for operating a locomotive. I bought a couple,
then put them on the German Henschel locomotive operated by Midwest
Central RR. It was hilarious to watch people read the signs. Wish
I could remember how that one went.

[MBZ] Komputenmachine

2015-02-03 Thread Alice Strickland via Mercedes
'Reminds me of a great little article by Art Buchwald probably 40 years or so
ago. I kept it as the front page of my B-52 flight checklist for many years
until I retired in '81. I still have it here somewhere. 'Can't remember it
all, but it starts something like this:

Das Komputenmachine ist nicht fer der dumkopf arbeiten und gefinger poken.
Keepen das hands offen, und studieren das buch!

And so it goes for several paragraphs.

Re: [MBZ] Secret message for Dan

2015-02-03 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
It's not just banks. We have "neighbors" living in a USDA "loan" house who
haven't made a house payment in years.

It would be interesting to know just how common this (unexecuted foreclosures)
is in the US. I suspect there is a great deal being swept under the rug these
days. IMO, this is not unlike the fake financial representations that started
the mess in 2008.

My dad briefly had a Dauphine when I was about 9. I recall it had a
bat-handled switch on the top of the steering column near the steering
wheel that selected between "city" horn and "country" horn.

The Dauphine was a nice, compact car but my dad got rid of it when it
started leaking coolant.

He purchased a 1960 Ford Falcon with the inline 6 and three on the tree.

> How is my former 95 E320 doing?

Running OK, but with some niggling problems.

- The rear window defrost switch recently started not latching on like
it's supposed to. Yesterday, I held the switch in its upper position
as I was driving to defrost the rear window. After awhile, it decided
it would stay on when I released the switch, but by that time the
  window was nearly defrosted.

- The four-way emergency flashers stopped working. At one point, pressing
the switch would cause the bulb-out light to come on. Now, nothing
happens. I got a new switch from Kaleb, but now I'm not sure that's the
entire problem. I need to find a schematic of the circuitry.

- The check engine light has been on, with an error code of 23, which is
the up-shift delay when the engine is cold. That causes the transmission
to stay in a lower gear, forcing the engine to go to higher RPM to cause
the catalytic converter to be heated up more quickly. Since it was
causing the engine to go well over 3000 RPM when it was stone cold, I'm
just as glad it's not working; I don't want to rev a cold engine that
high, particularly when the temperature is in the single digits. I did
some research about it online and think there is some way to have it not
do that but still have the computer think everything is OK. I haven't
gotten any further than that, though the CEL has been on for many
  thousands of miles.

- The passenger-side mirror doesn't move horizontally -- a linkage is
broken as I understand it. I'm still waiting for parts from Kaleb.

- The 205/55-16 Nokian WRG2 tires I had put on our E420 but transferred
to the E320 when the E420 was wrecked are nearly worn out, so I need to
buy new tires. I have a complete set of 15" rims, so I am planning on
putting winter tires on those and a set of summer tires on the 16" rims.
(And thanks to listers for that decision.)

- The engine is running fine after I replaced the water pump. The car is
getting 25 - 26 mpg now during the winter here at 7000+ foot elevation.

Mortgage interest deduction is a scam. On every
dollar in

The only ones making out are the banks.

Spend a dollar, get 28 cents back. Better odds at

I have heard similar stories in that if the properties are foreclosed the true
value will appear on their balance sheet, devaluing their assets significantly.

There are also procedural issues in some states, Florida being one of those.

This isn't the first multi-year foreclosure we know of. There was one in our
old neighborhood (as was the original one I mentioned) two doors down from our
old house that was in foreclosure for over four years. We contacted the lender
about purchasing it and they were totally noncommittal about selling, closing
it out, etc.

Re: [MBZ] elementary school cars

2015-02-03 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
When I was a kid, this would have been like 1960 -62 or so, our neighbor
"Jack" (to whom my dad referred, in private, as "Jackleg" which I guess
was derogatory in some fashion) had a light blue Renault, I think it was
a Dauphine, that was pretty clapped out, as was a succession of his
various vehicles. I remember him spending several late evenings
underneath the thing, up on stands in the street in front of his house,
doing a bottom-end job on it. Of course, being a furrin car, this
engendered all sorts of remarks amongst the neighbors about what a POS
it must be (though at the time I don't think any of them used the S
word, at least not where I could hear it). Jackleg's family, which
included 2 chirruns about my age, also had a pet raccoon and a very
large black cat, which I thought was pretty cool. I also thought his
mechanical pursuits to be quite interesting but I was not allowed to get
near the vehicle while it was being worked on, so never really saw what
was actually going on under there.

I remember there being a commercial on TV about that time for that car,
it had a little jingle that went "Renault 'beepbeep' Dauphine", where
the "beepbeep" was the sound of the horn, which was very
freench-sounding. It was quite catchy, since I remember it still.

I paid $20. I STILL have the car in a garage here in Athens, GA. We
managed to lose the engine along the way, but i do have a dauphene engine
that fits it.

Another project. The car is complete less engine.

In about 1976 i bought a VW bug …. an old one, not a split window, but i
think a 54 or 55. It ran and we drove it around a little and then parked it
in a garage. It had a replacement engine that was a 36 hp rather than the
original 20 or whatever it was.

I kept it till about 1990 and sold it for $1000 which was good money in
1990.

There are lots of foreclosed properties even in affluent parts of the DC
area. How does this play out if you purchase one of these homes and need
to evict the homeowner/tenant/squatter?

Mortgage interest deduction is a scam. On every dollar in interest you pay, you
deduct 28 cents from your tax bill. The only ones making out are the banks.

Spend a dollar, get 28 cents back. Better odds at a casino.

Pay the house off, and be done.

Subject: [MBZ] OT: Update XXXIX: SHE CAN READ (and other information)!

After a year of problems with her eyes, Shirley can finally read!

She got new lenses after her cataract surgeries last summer, but with the
vitrectomies in her left eye and the capsulotomy in her right eye, her eyes
changed enough to make those lenses useless for reading. At her final visit at
Eye Associates in Santa Fe with the retinologist on 13 January, we asked about
her reading problems. The technician had done a refraction at the beginning of
her appointment; the doctor said that the new prescription just generated would
solve her reading problems.

Shirley then went to Eye Associates Optical in Los Alamos (affiliated with the
medical section of Eye Associates) with the new prescription. We were expecting
to pay for new lenses, but when the lady there looked at her record, she said
that since it was so soon after she got her previous lenses, they would cover
the cost of the new lenses! Praise the Lord!

I was somewhat apprehensive that the new lenses would really solve the problem,
but when Shirley got the lenses, she said she could read. She has packed away
the large magnifying glass she had been using and is reading well. She may have
to have a capsulotomy on her left eye in the future, but she is functioning
well now.

In other news :-), WE HAVE A CONTRACT ON OUR HOUSE!!! Another Praise the Lord!
The contract is with a young man named Peter and his wife Sarah, who are
currently residing in Houston, Texas. Peter grew up in Albuquerque and Sarah
grew up here in Los Alamos. Sarah had seen our home on zillow.com and had asked
her parents, who live not too far from us here on Barranca Mesa, to come and
look at the house. They came on
24 January and were impressed by the house. After they reported back to her, I
received an email from and called Peter and later received a call from Sarah.
In our conversation, Peter said he had received his official offer from the Lab
here and was planning on coming out for a house-hunting trip on 14 February.
After talking with his new supervisor at the Lab, Peter found they wanted him
to start work on 06 April! He moved up his trip to this past weekend, with us
showing the house to him and his mother-in-law on Saturday, 31 January. Late
yesterday afternoon he called us and said he wanted to come over to talk about
an offer.
After he made a reasonable offer, we hashed out the details and agreed to meet
at Los Alamos National Bank (LANB) at 0900 this morning. One detail that
concerned me is that the house will have to close on 01 April, with them
getting posession then, 8-1/2 weeks from now.

After praying about our meeting, I met Peter in the lobby of LANB. We wondered
whether we should go to the title company in the lobby, or to the bank's loan
officers on the second floor. We decided to go to the title company, which
proved to be the correct choice.

The lady with whom we spoke at the title company, Patti, was, as Peter said,
"Awesome!" We went into the office and I said, "This young man wants to buy my
house." Peter said that we were wondering whether we should see them or the
loan officer first. Patti said we had come to the correct place and that they
did this every day. She said we didn't need a realtor and would be happy to
guide us through the process. She then took us into their conference room where
we discussed the transaction.
She then got copies of a contract form for the three of us and went through
each item, telling us what it meant and suggesting how we should handle it.
Peter and I then went about filling out the contract form, discussing how we
would handle closing costs, inspections, and other things. After filling it
out, the president of the title company reviewed it and said things were OK.

We then went across the lobby to the bank where Peter transferred the earnest
money to the title company's escrow account. After a brief trip back to the
title company to find telephone numbers for inspectors, we shook hands and
departed.

So, praise the Lord, we are progressing on the sale of the house!
Things to pray about now include,

 - Getting a high-enough appraisal for Peter to be able to
   get the loan from LANB,

 - Timely processing and funding of the loan,

 - Timely inspections and survey,

 - Wisdom, health, strength, and help for Shirley and me to get
all things done we need to to be able to move out on 01 April
and head for Indiana. (I'm in the middle of refurbishing our
utility trailer and our vehicles need some work -- not the least
of which is cleaning the mice which recently took up residence
and their smelly, potentially disease-laden detritus out of the
