That's a good book, read it when you recommended it a couple years ago. Very
nice read. Gave it to a sailor friend.

Robb White was a master of the art of spinning a good yarn. He was an old
salt, dispensing copious wisdom and entertainment in a voice that is part
Florida cracker, part biology professor. Readers got a taste of his
stories in How to Build a Tin Canoe, but that volume barely scratched the
surface of his total output. Flotsam and Jetsam includes all those
stories, plus about five times more.

His stories revolve around boats and boatbuilding, with countless
sidetracks into such esoterica as clam chowder, sawmills, cast-netting,
and alligators. His style is similar to his sister Bailey White’s—mining
a deep vein of Southern eccentricity and charm, while also imparting a
great deal of practical and technical wisdom.

As Peter Spectre wrote about him: “At first blush his style seemed to be
pure memory dump, but if you stuck with it over the long haul, you would
discover that each piece was part of a long, loose tale about what life
used to be and still could be without SUVs, personal watercraft,
Blackberries, plywood, fast food, and any amount of other useless stuff
bought off the shelf. The cumulative, compelling effect was to cause one
to examine critically one’s life in light of what he wrote about his. A
story by Robb White was beautifully constructed.”

A must-read for any boat-nut, and for anyone who values the old ways of
doing it yourself.

Gentlemen if you did not purchase this book the first time I posted about
it, please do yourself a favor and read it. I pulled it down off the shelf
to read a few essays to my son when he was nagging me about turning the
internet back on for him to watch Lego videos last night. I had him select
the essays. The first one was entitled "Farts", followed by "Pine Oil" and
then "Moving slow". A good time was had by all. Even he had to agree it was
pretty good value.

Absolutely. I saw one immediately after a blowout on my return trip.
Fortunately, the brake lights ahead of me helped identify where the
remnants of the tier were in the roadway.

I don’t draft off of trucks, and haven’t for some years. I used to have a
customer years ago who ran a small regional cartage company, and he talked
about how much they hated people that did this, as wella s how really
dangerous it was for a lot of reasons. I deferred to his experience and
didn’t do it again.

Does the engine shake a lot while idling? Could be the injection pump

Re: [MBZ] THIS MERCEDES BENZ IS IN INCREDIBLE ORIGINAL CONDITIONThroughout!

2016-02-23 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
I had a hard time keeping my 350SDL "reined in" to under 80 on the
freeway/interstate.Nearest I can describe the drive and ride is to
compare it to flying a new Cessna 177RG on a cool, clear day - a quiet hum
and very smooth ride with just a very slight pressure left or right on the
wheel to go exactly where I wanted it. 'An absolute pleasure to drive. I'd
better /hush, though, y'all'll be snappin' 'em up, and I won't get a chance
at one. ;<)

After driving the 350SDL for a few days I can understand Wilton's
affection for these cars. While I will say that it's not as plush or
comfortable as my W140s or W220, it drives almost the same as a vergasser.
The OM603 is amazingly smooth, powerful and quiet compared to the OM617,
which is the only MB diesel I have had direct experience with up to now.
I find it interesting that it seems like it wants to go fast, with me
thinking I'm at speed only to realize I'm well over it!

I do get some vibration in the cabin at idle, but a new set of motor
mounts is in and waiting for me at the dealer. I'll put them on this
weekend and see if that helps. Otherwise, apart from the smell and minor
noise at cold startup, it's tough to tell this is a diesel.

It definitely seems heavier than the later cars, but I'm not sure if this
is due to steering geometry or what.

I've got nearly 400 miles on this tank of fuel and I still have over a 1/4
tank left, too.

Yep, I thought that, too, but I'm slowly about to "get past" 240D's.

'90 or '91 350SDL. 'Shoulda bought that one from Angelo Giaimo's friend
in St. Pete, FL, coupla years ago. As Dan is finding, that is one
fine-driving good-riding car - mighty hard to beat.

Maybe Wilton needs to replace his wrecked 240D?

It's always been garaged or parked under a carport and has no sun

Windows, A/C, heat, etc. are all manual. No sunroof. I bought it from
a

German prof who bought it new in Germany.
I'm going to sell it as soon as I figure out what these cars in very
good

condition are actually selling for.
