Re: [MBZ] OT: We talked about socks, how about blue jeans?

2019-12-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I used to be a Levi’s guy, as I had an uncle that worked for them his whole
life and often passed me freebies as I was his sample size when I was younger.
I noticed maybe 10-15 years ago that the fabric was noticeably lighter and that
they didn’t wear nearly as long - but the prices weren’t any different.

At that point I went to name-brand Wranglers and have been far more pleased at
the durability and longevity.

I wear jeans for working, not a fashion statement. If they’re going to wear out
prematurely, I’ll find others that won’t.

Re: [MBZ] OT: We talked about socks, how about blue jeans?

2019-12-24 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

40 years ago, $20 Sedgefield (Wrangler's premium brand) were substantially
better than $12 Wranglers.
They fit better (more human shaped but less efficient use of material), the
material was heavier and more densely woven, and the seams were triple or
quadruple stitched. And those 1980 Wranglers were better than today's Wranglers
IMO.

Now I'll just wear $20 Wranglers or $30 Dickies or sometimes Carhardts.
I buy the Wranglers when they're on sake for $15 or less. They're fine for
casual wear, but they snag/tear easily if you're around exposed nails or
thorns. Wore a brand new pair to my parents house, mom need a light bulb
changed.
I didn't notice her ladder had a small nail head sticking out, and poked a hole
in my Wranglers. I darned it and still wear them 2 years later, but I don't
think Carhardts would have ripped in the first place.
Wouldn't buy crappy imported $50 Levis even if I hadn't started boycotting
Levi/Dockers/etc in the 1990s.

Mitch.

Wranglers fit/feel better. El Mercado de Wal sells them cheap enough. Levi lost
its way ages ago. Try carpenter pants, the fabric is a bit thicker and the fit
is looser (loser) and they have the pencil/tool pocket and hammer loop for
added utility. If you want to look like an old geek cargo pants are great!

I have some bibs somewhere I need to dig out.

All this is predicated on not giving a sh*t about being a fashion statement.
Except maybe if you wear proper boots, then you might need to rethink all that
a bit.

I really like Vertx cargo pants, because the cargo pockets are more
discrete and perfect for carrying a smart phone and a small notebook. I
wear these with a nice shirt to work (unless I need to wear a jacket and
tie, then I put on real dress slacks).

https://vertx.com/f1-vtx8001-nv

It looks like they have replace the model I bought with the linked
version. I bought six pairs of the originals in three different colors,
and still have all six. The two that I wore most often are starting to
fray and come apart a little but are still very serviceable. Mine are a
poly-cotton blend, so wash and wear. The additional cargo pockets are the
big sell for me, plus they look smart enough to wear at work and other
places that blue jeans would not be appropriate.

Happens all the time. I would say that maybe 1 out of 10 or 15 orders I’ve
placed won’t arrive as promised.

I contact them and bitch every time. It usually yields a gift credit or maybe a
free item.

In this new house there’s a fancy WiFi capable Chamberlain garage door opener.
To access it through the phone app you have to have a bridge. Checked on the
Island of Large Wimmen and found one for $28 new. Tossed some other stuff I had
on a list to bump the order over $35 and got it the same day.

Ahh, instant gratification.

I dislike Tractor Supply on principle, they sell some of the worst garbage

I'm wearing All American Clothing Company jeans almost exclusively. Made in

I walk the walk on the Made in USA thing. I can wear an entirely Made in USA

Mitch.

Actually, I thought the cheaper Wrangler cuts have been made from better
cloth the past 10-15 years.  There was a while when they would tear
easily, but the ones I've had lately have not.  They usually wear
through at the thighs. Pre-2000 they'd wear through at the knees.  The
thin denim is in the Key Bibs.   It seems to keep getting thinner.  But
I like all the pockets for trades work.

That side pocket which is sized for a torpedo level works great for an iPhone
SE or 5S.
6S fits but it's a bit tight.
Might work for a larger phone with skinny 2:1 screen like a G6.
5" 16:9 fits but can be hard to pull out quickly. 5.5-6" 16:9 just won't fit.
Feels much better than having a rigid smart phone in a front or back pocket.

Re: [MBZ] Amazon

2019-12-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Depends. Mine didn’t have WiFi access, so I needed the bridge for it to work
with the app. This is what I bought:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B075H7Z5L8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The app walked me through the installation process, which took all of about 5
minutes, if that. The Chamberlain documentation said I had to use the G0303
hub, but everything I found online pointed at this model (G0301) so I bought it.

I don’t really care about the remote access, but I do like the notifications
that the door is being opened or closed.

like that (and we were amazingly the same tall skinny size) and he was
in absolute heaven.  I thought he was going to cry when he had to give
them back.

But now you can buy a pair of Levis for about the same price almost
50years ( wait, what?) on, so that says something about offshoring,
onshoring, quality, etc. I guess.  I used to work with a guy who had
been CFO for Levis when they were based in Seattle or somewhere out that
way, he was an a*e but he had some interesting stories about that
particular rag business.

I usually carry a 1" rigid blade scraper and pencils/pens when I am

I can hear from 35 to 8K with my over-the-ear Sades headset (cheap) - which
surprises me, I thought me hearing was worse than that with all the abuse
it's gotten since I was kids - guns and un-muffled engines. With the
Sennheiser on-the-ear headset, I can hear from 30 to 10K.

By total chance, I just replaced the suspension foam in my Pioneer HPM 500
speakers after a couple decades of procrastination. I bought them originally
because they have essentially flat frequency response from 50 to 50k Hz -- well
beyond "normal" human hearing range, but not that far from mine. I'd forgotten
how good they sound, wish I'd done this decades ago.

Car and computer audio stinks. Anything digitized at less than 50k Hz sounds
flat to me because I can clearly hear up to 222kHz, or at least I could back in
the day. Probably not so good now, but I can still tell the difference between
digital and analog mastering.

I wasn't sure of the hearing range of bats, so I looked it up:

https://dnr.maryland.gov/wildlife/Pages/plants_wildlife/bats/batelocu.aspx

Shouting Bats & Whispering Bats

Bats can be broadly characterized by their echolocation calls as
shouting bats and whispering bats. Big brown bats and little brown
bats are shouters and produce sounds (if we could hear them) of 110
decibels or similar to the loudness of a smoke alarm. Northern
long-eared bats are whispering bats and produce sounds of 60 decibels
(similar to the levels of normal human conversation). Shouters tend to
forage for food in open spaces; whisperers glean insects from the
foliage of trees and forage in the cluttered environments of forest
interiors. Not All Bats Echolocate

About 70% of all bat species worldwide have this ability. Also, bats
aren't the only animals that use echolocation. Whales, dolphins,
porpoises, oilbirds and several species of shrews, tenrecs, and
swiftlets use a similar technique.

Most bat echolocation occurs beyond the range of human hearing.
Humans can hear from 20 Hz to 15-20 kHz depending on age. Bat calls
can range from 9 kHz to to 200 kHz.

Some bat sounds humans can hear. The squeaks and squawks that bats
make in their roosts or which occur between females and their pups can
be detected by human ears, but these noises aren't considered to be
echolocation sounds.

So I learned something new today!

22 kHz. No one can hear 222kHz!

Hearing like that has made for an interesting life. I used to shut off the
mower and go in the house to answer the phone in graduate school, drove my
housemate nuts (she was partially deaf and the phone had an extra loud ringer,
but it was still a mechanical bell). Other than the fact it was actually
ringing she would have accused me of making things up.

Ultrasonic alarms are not ultrasonic for me, they used to run around 20kHz.
Loud bastards.

I hear all sorts of things at work no one else does, too -- I can tell when one
of my HPLC pumps isn't working right by the "screeech" it makes, when the
pressure is low or oscillating, the sound changes on the fill (fast) stroke. I
can also hear some sort of interference pattern in front of one of the
computers, get a a "ning ning ning" ringing sound similar to the pumps on the
HPLC, but they aren't running.

Over driven transistor amps have been known to run me out of the room with my
hands over my ears -- clipping causes very loud transient harmonics in that
situation, and while it wasn't bothering anyone else, it was so freaking loud
it was painful to me. The guys on the dorm floor thought I hated rock and
roll, especially Yes. Not my favorite music for sure, but it's unbearable with
the ear-spitting high frequency noise.

I also, sadly, notice almost every off note in a musical performance. I can't
produce music worth a hoot, no sense of pitch to speak of, but I can sure hear
a sour note. Takes a lot of the enjoyment out of it.

Being a trained musician on an instrument which is not restricted to the
keyboard notes (voice), I, too, can notice off notes. In addition, I do
notice when singers are using poor technique. Yes, I have to try to

Craig - your VIN brings up the same $$$ monovalve as my '95 E300. The
Daytona FL dealer I've been using has a list price of $520 for it.
001-830-40-84

004-830-20-84 seems to be for non-heated washer bottles, and lists for $153
at same dealer. I'm going to poke around a bit more to see what I can
learn about this valve, and then I'm probably going to order it and try it.

Another possibility is 001 830 38 84, which is about $275, and seems to be
appropriate for late model 124 gassers as well as diesels. Maybe this
valve doesn't have the bypass option, but does have fitting for heated
washer bottle? Very strange. This is the valve that should work in my '94
gasser wagon.

Duluth carpenter pants the best so far for working in the hangar/shop. They
fit well yet are loose, and stretch - never limiting movement.

Since 1978 I have been using Levi’s 501 shrink to fit button fly. Had
a minor error time with designer jeans for a year in 1980, then
returned to Levi’s 501. There are four or five in rotation at a time.
This gives them a lifetime wear of around 4 years. Best fit I have
found for any trousers to date for my lumpy form

Re: [MBZ] 124 monovalve variations

2019-12-24 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Do you need the heated washer bottle in balmy SC?   My cars never had
it.  I had to  make sure to use fluid rated to -40 in the winter.  (Or
do without washers.) Could you delete the flow to the washer bottle and
use the cheaper valve?   I salvaged a heated 126 washer bottle, but I
don't remember what year it was from.  Dan got part of it when he had a 126.

Craig - your VIN brings up the same $$$ monovalve as my '95 E300. The
Daytona FL dealer I've been using has a list price of $520 for it.
001-830-40-84

004-830-20-84 seems to be for non-heated washer bottles, and lists for
$153

at same dealer. I'm going to poke around a bit more to see what I can
learn about this valve, and then I'm probably going to order it and
try it.

Re: [MBZ] 124 monovalve variations

2019-12-24 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes

The SPDT function seems to be done mechanically in the base. I haven't taken
one apart yet, but I surmise that the solenoid moves a rod that has two valve
seats, which are opposed so that only one can be open at a time.

The part is the entire assembly. Only the circulation pump is available as a
separate part.

You missed my point: From what I have seen, the monovalve has one inlet
and one outlet. There is no way for it to do an
 SPDT function.

That's why it's so expensive, as I suspected!

I refer to that as "PCLS" - Permanent Critical Listening
Syndrome. It can apply to intonation, but also to the mix, mic
placement (or mic selection), fret/finger technique, reed control,
mechanical troubles, instrument damage, gain structure, and many
other factors that effect intentional sound.

That said, when it is really good, those who are effected are able
to truly enjoy how wonderful it really is!

In the last few days, I heard a recording of a choir and said to myself,
"That sounds bad -- the mics are not in the right places!"
