[MMouse]: remember your roots

1999-10-13 Thread Russ Sweetser

ahhh.. i meant to write this email a long time ago.. but i just got so
bogged down with schoolwork and whatnot that it slipped my mind, yet its
still a truism (if thats a word)
but i get so bogged down with listening to boots and rarities and shit
that a lot of times i forget about the songs that made me love the
mouse. cna you remember what it was like when you first understood the
genius of modest mouse? i was listening to talking shit about a pretty
sunset about a week ago and i just got this overwhelming nostalgic
feeling, the feeling of hearing a great band for the first time. theres
something about the music.. the feel.. the aura of everything that the
lyrics of the mouse seem to stand for that just hit me all at once.. an
overwhelming force..
this is why i like music in the first place.
so i hope you can all remember that gleam you got in your eye when you
discovered the mouse. i feel like such a schoolboy when i get that
nostalgia boost... like the awe and my open mouthed gaze as i watched MM
play for the first time last november 5th at bard college. old list
members can remember i wrote like an 8 page review of the show. it was
so amazing. the band that would be king (i know.. thats half japanese
but whatever).
take em all for the sadness and happiness that comes from hurting deep
down inside.

[MMouse]: stuff and stickers again

1999-10-13 Thread Eltaynin

With all due respect to everybody, I did not sign up to the Modest
Mouse mailing list to find out why everybody hates or does not hate Sonic
Youth or when Red Stars Theory are playing next in Possum Ridge, Arkansas.

um...i did. i would love to know any time red stars theory plays.
technically, they can be linked to mouse (jeremy), not to mention a link to
764 hero, which can be linked back to mouse...six degrees and all. so i
think it counts. for that matter, i'd like to read about 764 hero every now
and again. and besides, its not like there is modest mouse news every
frikkin day! gotta have something to yap about. so all of you sonic tooth
fans can yip yip (oh i love robin hitchcock) as much as you want. oh and i
wonder if i will see any of you non burning airlines fans at the upcoming
show in boston? and why oh why can't centromatic play that show with them?
i had the rare chance to see them at trees last year with baboon (who is
absoultely fab-o) and i loved them to bits. oh, and the other day, i was
listening to the new june of 44 and was reminded of baboon because of the
trumpets. lovely. oh wait...has anyone heard the new quasi? i think it's
nice, but it sounds like the last quasi. come to think of it, it sounds like
the one before that too. hmmm.

hhe. well...that whole thing had nothing to do with modest mouse. droppin
names.

now on with the actual mouse-i-ness

kids, if you send me a buck for the envelope, i'll send you a *free* modest
mouse sticker. if you send me two bucks for the envelope, i'll send you two
*free* modest mouse stickers. oh and if you want, you can ask for a *free*
764 hero sticker too.
some of you will be receiving you stickers in the mail very soon (a couple of
days). anyone who wants some can email me. i have plenty to go around.
happiness is a sticker ( or two ) on the back window of your car.

bye bye kiddies.

[MMouse]: compilations, bands, blah blah blah...

1999-10-13 Thread b. koski

first: what exactly is going on with 'building nothing out of
something'? (or '... something out of nothing', if i've confused the
title.) it obviously wasn't released on saturday -- updirect.com
doesn't have it listed, and uprecords.com doesn't mention anything
about it. anyone know the new release date?

second: i hate the promise ring. i like sonic youth, but agree that
they're overrated and, at the very most, are usually only very good
at their best. however, none of you probably care, nor do i really
care if you dislike them.. i wouldn't think listers would have a
major problem with someone giving a review of the new promise ring
album, but having seventeen 'yo! i hate the promise ring!' e-mails
can get on yr. nerves...

third: anyone hear the new rainer maria ep yet? i've heard that some
promo copies are floating around and i'm curious about how they've
done on it -- if it's in the same vein as 'look now look again', or
if it's completely different from anything they've ever done.

[MMouse]: Juno

1999-10-13 Thread hubbird

yes, yes, yes, juno is amazing. saw them open for modest mouse two years ago
at the redmond firehouse and was sitting on my hands, waiting patiently until
they finally released an album. the song magnified and reduced by inches, on
7", though hard to find, is simply one of the greatest, most breathtaking
songs ever. them boys know how to rock the casbah.

I wholeheartedly agree about "Magnified and Reduced By inches." An
incredible song. I didn't know the 7" was hard to find though...I got it
in a free box at the local college radio station.

Re: [MMouse]: sonic youth non-fans coming out

1999-10-13 Thread hubbird

If you didn't like the EP, the new album probably doesn't have a whole lot
to offer you. I think it sounds like Weezer (whom I also love).

I don't see the wheezer comparisons.

The vocals have the sissier sound like on the EP, but they still have the
hard edge of the first album, I think it comes out sounding like weezer.
They have more pop-rock style songs, with songwriting that embraces the
acoustic guitar (at least on one song) and the tendency to crescendo at
the drop of a hat.

I thought Christie Front Drive had been broke up for over a year and a half?
Their new side project is called "The Blue Ontario", that's totally worth
 getting.

I don't know about them breaking up...'course I haven't really had my ear
to the ground at all. What kind of shit does "The blue ontario" play?
Similar? Different? If so how...

1999-10-13 Thread tyler

Yes, as far as I know it was released as a s/t e.p. that then became known
as The fruit that ate itself. How, i do not know, perhaps someone else
can enlighten us on this development.

1999-10-13 Thread Mark Robbins

Alright, I was
silent until someone decided they had to go and bash weezer..now the frucking
gloves are off..and this boy is set to cyber rumble..
Regardless..this is
all pointless..and though i dont care if people wanna talk about other bands..i
think its cool and have actually started getting into some bands just because of
how obessesed a lot of you seemed with them..but theres really no need to put
anything down..just for the sake of puting it down..especially when it has no
relevance whatever...

and on a totally
unrelated note..I take back what i said about the new promise ring..ive listened
to it about ten more times..and its totally grown on me..i was born in 1968..la
la la..yah me

Re: [MMouse]: another pointless sonic youth mail

1999-10-13 Thread Ryan McDaniel

Alright, you got me to bite.

I went to see the ultimate lineup in Shapoeg State Park here in Oregon. Built to
Spill, Sonic Youth, Sneaker pimps, and I think Elliot Smith (yeah I don't know him so
burn me at the stake) all opened for Beck. Some of you know this concert for sure and
if you have a recording, please get in touch.

To the point: I owned 2 SY albums at the time and was pretty excited to see them.
BTS played a short set and didn't jam on anything. A big disappointment compared to
the 1st 2 shows that I'd seen. Sonic Youth gets up to save the day and play 1 solid
hour of experimental sound JUNK. Nobody played together. Just got up there like I
could have and played to myself for an hour. They may have been looking for some
random piece of noise to come together but 1 hour just wasn't enough time for the odds
of that happening to take place. The first and only time that I saw them and it was
crap. OR it was just too indie, cool, underground for my mainstream brain to
comprehend.

I've sold the 2 albums. There you have it. One take on why SY is a disappointment
LIVE.

Man, FUCK ALL YOU FOOLS!!! Sonic Youth is one of the most important groups in
independent music history!!! All you emo saps are bitchin about how much you hate
sonic youth (when you obviously havent passed much thought through it, or even heard
the music already) and how you can hold shit like Jets To Brazil and the Promise Ring
in such high regard?!! LAME!! Just start looking at and hearing Sonic Youth from the
very beginning until now. Like everyband they have their slumps, but they come out of
them better than ever. When i heard about their shit getting stolen i was especially
angry. I cant even fathom how impossible it would be to recreate such a custom sound,
to start over virtually from scratch. Just fuckin think about shit before you speak.
