[MMouse]: New ATDI

2000-09-18 Thread Todd Houlette

I just picked up the new ATDI over the weekend and I
know a lot of people were not too impressed with it,
but I personally think it is incredible. Very good
energy and it almost reminds me of Far. Anyone hear
Far? got a chance to see them? see any similarites?
can't stand them? Love'm? Check out "Tin Cans With
Strings To You." Very good album and I feel it is a
lot like the new ATDI. I was also happy to see Andy
Wallace mixed it. They're really getting the big boys.

[MMouse]: GOD DAMN!!!

2000-09-06 Thread Todd Houlette

God Damn, that was an incredible show. I can't believe
how great Modest Mouse was last night. There set list
was awesome and the best versions of Doing the
Cockroach, Teeth like god's shoeshine, and Cowboy Dan
I ever heard. I think Isaac screamed in his guitar on
all three of these. They played a very good mix of old
and new stuff and even though I do like the new album
a lot more now, I still got an even better
appreciation of if after hearing some of the songs
live once again. The set list was something like..
(not in order)

3rd planet
Wild Pack of Family Dogs
Paper thin Walls
Doing the Cockroach
Talking shit about a pretty sunset
I came as a rat
Teeth like god's shoeshine
Trailer Trash
Perfect Disguise
Tiny cities made of ashes
Breakthrough
Cowboy Dan

I think there might have been more, but my mind is
still a little cloudy. That would be a great show to
have been mp3'd.

[MMouse]: sunnyday and designs

2000-06-23 Thread Todd Houlette

I was curious if anyone got to see Sunny Day Real
Estate play at the Music Millennium here in Portland
on Wednesday. It was awesome to see them play in such
a small record store on such a small stage, and the
turn-out was pretty good as well. They only played a
handful of songs and the atmosphere was very casual,
but great none the less. Also where is the page with
the T-shirt designs on them? I still need to send mine
to whoever is accepting the designs, but it'll be
there soon.

2000-06-06 Thread Todd Houlette

I just got the Night on the Sun 12" yesterday and it
is really good. A nice sweet little taste of the mouse
before the new album comes out. If I'm not mistaken
"Night on the Sun" is the same version as on the
Japanese EP, but "You're the Good Things" is a
complete new version or at least a remix. "I Came as a
Rat" sounds like the same version on the new one and
"Willful Suspension of Disbelief" sounds great. I'm
curious what will be on the other 12"s that are coming
out since this is suposedly in a series of three.
Enjoy!

[MMouse]: eating my words

2000-05-01 Thread Todd Houlette

After hearing what people have had to say in listening
to the MM and how it tends to grow on you like a bad
habit after a few dozen listening sessions, I must
agree. About a week ago I wrote somewhat of a rant
and rave about how my first impression of the new
album was disappointing, but I have to admit that it
has grown on me. Thinking back to when I first heard
Modest Mouse, I must admit that I was not "holly shit,
this is the best thing ever!!!" It took some time to
grow on me (very quickly I must say), but the same
seems to be happening with the new album. Hopefully in
time most Modest Mouse fans will grow to like the new
music and support them. I'm sure we all will. God, I'm
an optimistic dork!

[MMouse]: going against the grain

2000-03-10 Thread Todd Houlette

On the topic of...
...bands that have done the exact opposite of
sell-out...Branch off in musical directions against
the grain of popular culture despite the threat of
million dollar losses..
I've got to give a high five to Mike Patton of Faith
No More for his relentles pursuit of experiments in
music composition, despite the break up of Faith No
More, ie Mr. Bungle and Fantomas. Anyone had a chance
to see either one of these? Take a listen to the
Fantomas CD and imagine them pulling it off live to a
"T." Two parts Mr. Bungle, one part Melvins, and one
part Slayer.
The only shitty part about seeing that live is all the
idiots expecting Faith No More songs.

[MMouse]: best shows

2000-03-08 Thread Todd Houlette

Best shows that I have seen,
•Fugazi with 764-HERO and Red Stars Theory in
Springfield Oregon (of all places) last year

•Neil Young played the HORDE tour a few years ago and
while some other band was playing (I think it was the
Squirll Nutt Zippers-y h) he came out to a
tent off to the side and started taking requests. More
highlights of that show were Morphine and Ben Folds
Five.

•Other shows I've seen that I don't quite remember
when they were (those are the best ones) were Far on a
couple of occasions, the Pixies several years ago,
Primus on their Frizzle Fry tour, Modest Mouse of
course, Wilco...m now I'm just fishing.

By the way, in response to this whole GAS OUT thing,
why not just fuck your cars for a few days and try
walking or riding your bike. When we stop buying gas
for just a few days we still make up for it the days
preceding it and folling the strike. That does
nothing. If you want to make a real stance, encourage
everyone you know to ride their bikes sometimes, walk,
or at least consider carpooling. The first step
towards a solution is recognizing the problem.

[MMouse]: modest mouse-ish music

2000-03-07 Thread Todd Houlette

Yes, Modest Mouse is blatantly influenced by the
Pixies, lyrics as well as music composition. It was
really good to hear someone mention The Feelings.
Great band, similar at times I guess, but a completely
different level of appreciation. As far as other bands
that sound like Modest Mouse, there are going to be
the ones that you'll hear very often like Red Stars
Theory, 764-HERO, Built to Spill, Pavement... and
thats what comes to me quickly. I'm sure others will
respond to this with a more extensive list.
