Did you add /home/peter/downloads/mythtv-0.16/lib to your

Hi, the version of transcode is:

 http://www.linuxpackages.net/search_view.php?ver=10.0by=namewhat_cat=subcat=name=transcode

OK, should be new enough. There is a newer version out (0.6.14) but I haven't
tried it yet.

I tried to tcprobe the file, but got the error:

 #tcprobe -i 1013_2004120320_2004120321.nuv
tcprobe: error while loading shared libraries: liblcms.so.1: cannot open

OK, that's a problem. I have no idea what that lib is, but if tcprobe won't
run, that will be why nuvexport is missing the data it gets from tcprobe :)

I'm using ivtv 0.3.x because I don't know any better! I started with
ivtv-0.1.9, but it didn't work for tvout. Do you know which one is
recommended for this hardware? I'd be happy to switch. I'm having
problems getting the on-screen menus to work on tvout (but I suspect it
may be the firmware version I'm using, pvr_1.18.21.22168_inf.zip , not
the driver). Thanks again for the help,
 Don

In general, it's more recommended to use the 0.2.x stream. The 0.3.x stream
is on the bleeding edge even more so than the 0.3.x series. I personally use
0.1.10ck100zz on my PVR250s. Your mileage may vary. :)

Anyways, time for bed.

Hello Everybody,
I just reinstalled my server with FC3 (from RH9) using Jarod's Guide.
Everything is running except IVTV (i.e. cannot watch TV).

Here is a snip from my /var/log/messages after loading ivtv:

Any ideas what is causing the error reading eeprom?

The the color is still out of wack on the s-video, I guess I'll fall

However, you have continuous access to the debian development tree

no need to wait for a whole release.

Even if you do wait a whole release, Debian doesn't require a full

[mythtv-users] Mythtv + DXR3 ?

2004-12-05 Thread Tim T.
Hi,

I managed to get an experimental mythtv box set up on my desktop
system (experimental in that I'm planning something standalone in the
near future).
This works fine, but watching tv is often a problem, since the screen
often stops for a few seconds, especially if there is some processing
going on in the background.

The hardware: AMD Athlon 1800 +, Pinnacle PCTV pro nvidia Gforce 4mx
video card,
using nvidia's latest drivers.

While rummaging through the odds and bit box, I found a DXR3 card. As
I understand it, this is a hardware MPEG decoder.

Would it be worth the effort to install this card into my current
desktop system to fix the
live tv playback problem ?

(Or should I just bite the bullet, and get that PVR 350 for christmas ?;-)

Does anyone know when a new release is due? I see the
last one was four months after the previous one. that
would meen we still have another month or so if it
followed that pattern.
I want to get it installed on my epia with the new
hardware decoder support but I don't want to use cvs
because I use xbox mythtv on an xbox and I also use a
frontend/backend on my desktop along with a frontend
on my laptop. I really don't want to go all of that
from cvs.
Thanks

Re: [mythtv-users] New MythTV Hardware Review

2004-12-05 Thread nate s
This topic has already been beaten to death, so I'll make it brief. I
think that, really, no one knows for sure how it is going to work, as
the law is very vague in that regard. Even some lawyers seem
confused. Suffice it to say, it'd be much safer to buy one before
June. At the very least, the people who make the card are going to
determine exactly how they are going to comply with the new law, so it
will take time before they sell them again, if they do at all.

However, the cards take no CPU to use, so they won't affect your

Never buy hardware until you need it, of course, but there is a deadline
here you may not have been considering.

I was under the impression that the cards must be able to read the flag.
In that case what if the card just transmitted that to the software and
let the software handle recording or live-viewing only (for flagged
broadcasts). I don't know how this would be handled in v4l but maybe an
additional device could be added which software could read from
(/dev/video/flag ?) to let it know it was flagged content. I don't know
all that much about the subject, so this is just speculation on my part.

Here's another datapoint. I have a frontend on my workstation, an
 Athlon64 3200+ system with a 128MB Radeon 9600 and 1GB system RAM.
STILL I got skipping, though not as bad. Is it the ATI cards that
suck or the drivers? I am amazed that this worked so poorly on my
 Athlon64 box.

Try the onboard first, see how it works.

Will do, thanks for the suggestion.

OK, finally had the time to do this. The onboard video is GeForce4 MX
NV18. I boosted the box's system RAM to 512MB and give the video card a
64MB framebuffer. I also verified that xv and xvmc are enabled on the
server side by using xdpyinfo. I also verified that it is using AGP.
I'm running at 960x540p using your modeline.

Now the hdtv clip is quite choppy. It works OK for the first 1-3
seconds, then gets all choppy. At least I have a picture :-) The sound
gets choppy, too, BTW.

But I'm at a loss what to do next. If you have any other suggestions
for me, I'd appreciate them :-)

I thought of XvMC, but I can't:

1. Figure out whether or not it's already enabled;

2. Figure out how to enable it.

Just to recap, I'm using the MythTV .debs on this Athlon XP 3200+
system, 2.6.7 kernel.

Thanks again!

Re: [mythtv-users] ATC-620 Antec Phantom 350 fan less Power Supply

2004-12-05 Thread nate s
From my expierence, as well as what I've read, antec is one of the
best, (if not the best, though I haven't tried all of 'em,) power
supply manufacturers. I have a True380 in this box right now. Rock
solid, stable voltages. For a couple good power supply reviews, look
here:
http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/20021021/index.html and here:
http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/20040122/power_supplies-28.html

As far as for being fanless, it should be fine, provided your case has
adaquate airflow through it.

You might look into some other silent power supplys with fans
though, just because they would cost a lot less, and they can still
get to be *very* quiet. This Antec True380 I have is much quieter
than the northbridge chipset, though you can hear it a bit on a warm
day.

[mythtv-users] Sound Issues with VIA 82xx

2004-12-05 Thread Paul Barker
Title: Message

A while back I
posted saying that I was having issues with sound using a front end with
embedded VIA 82xx audio and an optical digi out. Basically whenever I went into
TV / Music etc I got no sound until I muted the IEC switch in the mixer. Each
time I exited and went back into to TV or anything else the switch was turned
back on and the problem returned.(This is an FC1 box by the
way).

I'd tried all sorts
of things to get it going but eventually lived with a work around script which
checked the switch every 5 secs and turned it off if it was
on.

Well I finally sat
down and dedicated some time to find out exactly what the problem
was.

It turns out that
the IEC958 switch basically turns the optical digi out on and off. Something
turns this on (possibly at boot but certainly each time I go into TV or Music or
whatever) and my AV ampis set to auto source select. Iit sees light on the
optical in then it tries to usethe digital input. I'm assuming that the
signal on the optical line is not the correct format and hence no sound. If I
manually switch over to the analog on the amp then, hey presto, sound
!

So ... either the
optical out shouldn't be on all the time (ASLA driver ? / OSS ? / Myth ?) or I
need to direct all my output to the optical out but get ALSA to convert the rate
etc into the correct mode.

A couple of
questions:

1) Is Myth turning
on the optical ? (I'm not set to use it by default but if I set it to use
ALSA:plug:spdif I get sound in TV but Music won't use it - error could not open
sound device).

2) Can ALSA do the
rate convert so I could ship all my output to the optical and would this be a
good solution ?

If 2 is possible
some pointers to some good resources on asoundrc from the point of view of an
ALSA newbie would be good :) I'm not looking for the answer on a plate (but if
you have one plated up ... ;) ) and I'm a Systems Engineer so can probably work
it out with some decent reference material.

Thanks, as always
for any and all help. If anyone's interested I'll post a
conclusion.

Title: Re: New MythTV Hardware Review

It
will be too late. 6 months from now, sale of tuner cards for
HDTV
that
could be used in an open source environment will be banned. So
while
you
may not get your HDTV display, you will be wanting to get your
tuner
card
before June, and once you have it, you may as well put it in
your
system.

Its also worth noting that this law is only in the US (and very
stupid, IMHO). So it is possible, if you live outside the US, that you
will be able to buy the cards and record HDTV content - which would
surely drive adoption (but, hell, the US has already put off HDTV
adoption for 10 years already, what's another 10?!). Also - as a side
rant - how can the FCC seriously consider making every existing HDTV
decoder obsolete just when HDTV is taking off?!? I would be FUMING
mad!

If this sounds as stupid to you as it
should, write or call your congressmen and tell them that Hollywood
has them over a barrel and they are effectively removing your fair use
rights.

Back to the original config question...
Doug, I would suggest that you also take a look at the Asus Pundit as
a front-end for your system. Its small, quiet, and fairly cheap. I'm
very happy with mine.

Cheers,
Brad

[mythtv-users] Need to Change OS X Frontend Settings

2004-12-05 Thread Jared McIntyre
How do you get to the initial setup dialog for the mythfrontend on OS
X or where are the settings stored so that I can change them? The
first time I ran it, I accidentally configured it to the wrong
address for the backend, so now whenever I run it mythfrontend, it
comes back with database errors and quits. But, since the setup
dialog never shows up again, I can't figure out how to fix it (and it
appears the files in mythfrontend/contents/MacOS/share/mythtv aren't
used to define where the backend server is since I've changed the
settings there by hand).

[mythtv-users] displaying widescreen TV on a 4:3 video card

2004-12-05 Thread Jason Lewis
Hi,
I have been struggling with this problem
My myth box has a DVB capture card, and a Geforce4 MX graphics card. It
turns out that DVB comes in in some sort of wide screen, 16:9 or
something, and the graphics card I have can only do 4:3 TV-out.

Is there a way to get Mythtv to resize and add letterbox to the output
so I can see the whole picture on my TV?

I have tried the W key, but it does not have an appropriate mode. The
closest is the 16:9 stretch, but that crops the left and right edges of
the picture.

Thanks in advance,

Interestingly, running a test for DVI compliance is not a mandatory

Conexant makes the chip used on the pcHDTV card. It isn't anything to
worry about. Unless you have an older system there are probably a lot
of devices in your system that don't have known listing in pciids. They

[mythtv-users] Question about using nuvexport

2004-12-05 Thread Mr. Myth
Hello,
I am new to editing with myth
I recorded a 3 hour program using mythtv.
I only really want to keep about 3 minutes of the program.
I used the edit mode to set a cut point in front of and behind the clip
I want to save.

I pressed X to transcode.
Now if I watch that show, I only see the clip I want.

I appears the original file is still intact and rather large. Is this
to be expected? I guess I thought transcoding it would reduce its size.

So - moving forward.
I tried to use nuvexport to extract that little clip to a small(er) mpeg
file.

I chose option 8 MPEG2-MPEG2 cut only.

This started up avidemux2 which consumed all of my cpu for about 18
hours before I killed it.

I haven't tried this again. Am I going down the wrong path?
All I really want to do is archive this little bit of video and then
delete the rest out of mythtv.

Thanks for any help/advice.

[mythtv-users] Re: Nuvexport error on picking shows to process

2004-12-05 Thread Don Brett
Hi Gavin, I think it worked. Well, yes, it definitely worked. To
answer your question, yes, I did compile avidemux from source, and the
version is:

avidemux-2.0.34-test1 (11-06-2004)

, which is the latest one posted on:

http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

They have earlier versions posted, which one do you use?

I changed the driver over to ivtv-0.2.0-rc3a and did a couple of more
test runs. At first, it failed in a completely different way. Then I
started over (new capture and very deliberate moves in creating the
cutlist). It worked once and failed once. The steps were:

- Capture a 15 minute clip
- Wait 2 minutes for processing to finish (mythbackend)
- Access Mythfrontend and play movie
- Press M to display menu
- Select Edit (this puts up a timeline without any commercials shown)
- Press Z to load commercial flag list (which displayed the cuts)
- Adjust cut points
- Escape, escape to exit playing movie
- Run immediately after adjusting cuts
- Nuvexport runs for 5 seconds and failed
- Wait 5 minutes
- Run nuvexport (on exactly the same clip), worked fine

I think I probably missed a step in the Edit mode during the previous
attempt. I didn't load the commercial flagging list, I just put in cut
points. It seems to be fairly touchy about the commercial flagging and
cutlist so I'll pay closer attention on the next test runs.

I'm a little confused about the 'rules of engagement', so I'll be
scrutinizing the cutlist thing a little closer. As for nuvexport,
outstanding job. Assuming the source is correct, it works fine. Thanks
again for all the help, I'll be doing more experimenting.
Don

PS - The menus on tvout still don't work. They used to work with an
earlier version of firmware, so I may try switching back.

The actual chip is probably manufactured by Conexant, this is their
PCID. Some manufacturers replace the first ID with their own so that it
prints the appropriate companies name up, like HP or IBM. I wouldn't
sweat it, as long as it works. You can simply supply and updated device
entry for the PCID guys so instead of Unknown it can print PCHDTV 3000
or perhaps the ATSC chip model number.

Re: Dish channel changing Re: [mythtv-users] Feature Suggestions(Tivo)

2004-12-05 Thread nate s
I think I sort of understand what your doing...

Let me see if I've got this right. You basically have one IC, a
'74138', which has 8 output pins that control relays. You control
which of the 8 relays are on or off by sending an octal number to the
parallel port.

The things I'm still hazy on are how exactly you wire it into the
parallel port, and what you mean by a buffer between the 74138 and the
relay. Also, for controlling it, is it as simple as echo 3
/dev/lp0 ?

Thanks

I've been wondering how exactly something like that would be done for
some time. Not for the same reason; I was wondering if there might be
some way to control a device, such as a AV switchbox, that does not
have a remote, with relays, but I never really looked in to it. I'm
curious to know how you did it.

[mythtv-users] waited too long for decoder to pause bug

2004-12-05 Thread Blaise Bourdin
Hi,
I eventually upgraded my Mythtv box to 0.16.
(Mandrake 10.1 official, chaintech NIF something MoBo, everything else
pretty much stock)

I searched the list to see the the bug is known -and- fixed in CVS, but
I don't feel adventurous to go for a full CVS installation. Is there a
patch to apply to the stock 0.16 to fix this problem?

At this point, I can't compile 0.15.1 on a fresh install of Mandrake
10.1, and 0.16 won;t work... I'm without mythtv for the first time in a
year...

Um...

Probably going to draw fire on this, but...

Why does the Linux community tend to collaborate with e-mail lists? This seems
kind of backward to me given that there is the rather nice real time messaging
methods used made useful by various forum sites. I guess with an e-mail list
you don't have to have a web site host, but aren't forums really a bit more
user friendly? I'd really like to hear why the Linux world seems to stick to
these mail lists.

Beyond that, can someone tell me a website that explains the effective use of
e-mail lists? I guess I should STFW for this one, but if anyone can give me a
nice link that would be great.

Sorry about the off topic, but I just don't quite get it...

[mythtv-users] ivtv_enc_timeout: Running encoder tasklet...

2004-12-05 Thread Jay R. Ashworth
We've just, since the 28th of last month, started having a problem with
this on our 2-tuner KT-400A box -- which had been rock solid until
them. We've been revving CVS occasionally, but didn't do one that was
consonant with when this problem started.

I checked, and we didn't do a kernel upgrade then either.

And we've been steady on 100z since shortly after it came out; it never
gave us any problems.

*Because* it never gave us any problems, I haven't been paying as much
attention to this list as formerly; has something gond by that might be
a hint here?

Absolutely the only thing that changed in that time period was that our
secondary IDE cable (a round 80-wire) grew an HP DVD-burner to go along
with its Barracuda-200 (part of a three-drive XFS volume group, so,
alas, I can't unplug the HDD for testing). The drive itself went in 11
successful days before the crashes started.

I'm not seeing any other untoward messages in the logs at runtime; Myth
continues to *think* it's recording, but the file ceases getting any
larger.

My Sister Approval Factor is plummeting; any suggestions on what to
look for (and what debugging HOWTO's I should have already known to
read :-) would be greatly appreciated. (If someone wants to write that
up as an IVTV Debugging page at mythtv.info, so much the better. ;-)

[mythtv-users] Problem with wife-friendly feature

2004-12-05 Thread Phill Edwards
I've been trying to get the wife-friendly power button to work. I found that
creating a symlink in .kde/AutoStart to irexec wasn't working for me, so I
put this line in /etc/rc.local:

irexec --daemon /home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc
Problem is that I can't get the script to start mythfrontend. I can get it
to kill it and I know the shell script is getting executed because of that
and because I'm echoing some stuff to a /tmp file from it. My shell script
looks like this:

#!/bin/bash
PROG=/usr/bin/mythfrontend
STATUS=`ps -e | grep mythfrontend | grep -v grep | wc -l | awk '{print $1}'`
if [ $STATUS -eq 0 ]
then
   ( $PROG )
else
   killall $PROG
fi
echo mythrestart.sh executed at `date` /tmp/mythrestart.log
echo STATUS = $STATUS /tmp/mythrestart.log
/usr/bin/mythfrontend
exit 0
When mythfrontend is running it correctly kills it, but when it's not
running it doesn't start it up and I don' t understand why. One other point
that may be relevant here is that when this gets executed mythbackend resets
its idle timer which I presume means it thinks it saw a frontend connect -
but where is the frontend, 'cos I can't see it?

TIA,

They feel the opposite of you. Web site interfaces are pretty and more
flexible in many cases, but they are ungodly crawlingly slow, no matter
how fast your internet connection is, compared to an E-mail reader
showing you stuff live on your own machine.

It's really amazing what the difference is between having no noticeable
time to complete an action like moving to a next message, or deleting,
or zooming over a variet of messages, and having a noticeable time.

You will give up a lot of other user interface goodies to get it, or
in particular, once you experience true speed, you will not go back
to slow for anything.

Newsgroups are even better (when local, though they are not comonly local
these days) because newsgroup readers were designed for handling really
large volumes of data.

Web boards also tend to suck, and not be better UI wise. Many don't
do the most basic thing -- a quick display of the messages that are
new _for you_. I don't know if any of them have crossposting. Few
have the easy thread following of trn.

What are the chances of us being able to get a card that will accept ATSC
over cable (using a cablecard) ? That, along with satellite, have to be
the vast majority of the market. Do many people really use OTA antennas
for HDTV? For me, personally, it would be useless, as I only have 1 local
station that would even be broadcasting in high def.

Another thought I had:

What about using FireWire to capture? Many HD receivers have FireWire
outputs. In fact, if I remember correctly, the FCC requires cable
companies to supplied FireWire-equipped boxes for the purpose of being
able to record.

[mythtv-users] mythbackend dies after a few seconds

2004-12-05 Thread Gene Traxler
I had myth (.16 installed from .debs) running on a current Debian
unstable system (just updated yesterday). It was working apparently OK
after the update until this evening. I shut the machine down and added
a 200 gig drive to it and now the backend dies about 5 seconds after
starting. As far as I know, there were no software or configuration
changes except installing the additional hard drive. I disconnected the
new drive but myth-backend still dies.

I had a problem something like this a year ago after an update that
turned out to be that the updated discover scrit was loading the OSS
drivers before ALSA started. I don't think that that is what is
happening now but am not sure.

I set verbose logging on the myth backend but don't see anything in
the log that tells me why the backend is dying. Can someone please give
me a hint what to look for next? Here are the module list and
mythbackend log. Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

[mythtv-users] Warning: Something is currently using: /dev/snd/pcmCOD1p, retrying error...

2004-12-05 Thread Bill Sutton
Hi again,

Wanted to post more information on the problem that I am having with my sound.
I appologize for the repeat post, but I don't know how to reply to my previous

I'm pretty sure that my problem is mostly one of setup. I don't know what to
setup in Mythbackend through Mythsetup for my sound device. Is this supposed
to be a path to something like /dev/snd/??? or what? Are there any detailed
instructions on the various setup pages. I see configuration settings both
when I do a mythtvsetup and in the frontend in
Main/Utilities-Setup/Setup/General page. What goes where? I'm using FC3 which
I believe has ALSA drivers by default. I just figured out tonight how to
actually get sound out of my sound card, so that was a step forward. Listed
below are hopefully all of the appropriate log files.

 Hi,

I've been running mythtv .16 for a while now and it's absolutely
great. The thing is that I just got digital television with an
external settop box which I want to be able to record as well of

something about LIRC transmitting signals, emulating a remote
control??! And how do I record shows? Can I use the tv-in on one of my

Thanks for any help in advance.

PS to give you an idea how I started... I used Jarod's guide and my
knowledge of linux/mythtv has improved a bit but I'm still a newbie

Well, a good starting point is, once again, Jarod's guide. Go to
Tips 'n' Tricks, scroll down to Controlling an external cable/sat
box, and give the two links a read.

If your cable box has a serial port, you'll want to go that way,
otherwise you will have to use an IR Blaster (that's where LIRC will
come in).

[mythtv-users] Re: New MythTV Hardware Review

2004-12-05 Thread Doug Heimburger
Thanks to all for the feedback -- Brad, appreciate you bringing up the
HDTV option. Buying the HD card before June was indeed on my plate,
but I didn't want to put it in at the same time as the rest of this
setup (just to keep the complexity down).

However, my understanding is that HD requires a decent amount of CPU
to decompress, right? My G4 Powerbook struggles to decompress the
MPEG-2 stream in software; I shudder to think about how it would do on
an HD stream.

Brad (other Brad) - thanks for the suggestion of the Pundit. I had
looked at it, and then for some reason went towards the CoolerMaster.
Now that I'm thinking of going diskless, I should put it back on. How
quiet have you found it to be, and are you running it with or without
disk?

Thanks again.
Doug

sure that my problem is mostly one of setup. I don't know what to setup in Mythbackend
through Mythsetup for my sound device. Is this supposed to be a path to something like
/dev/snd/??? or what? Are there any detailed instructions on the various setup pages. I

Mmmm... Not sure what's causing this... Maybe have a look where it suggests?
recorder: /dev/snd/pcmC0D1p: error setting audio input device to
44100kHz/16bits/2channel
Could not detect audio blocksize
Cannot open DSP '/dev/snd/pcmC0D1p', exitingopen: Device or resource busy

Well, if you read the error message, it thinks something's using your
sound card ;)

Only one thing can access the 'raw' sound device at once.
fuser /dev/snd/pcmC0D1p
will give you the PID of the process that has the sound device already
open. You can look this up in
ps aux
, to find out what the process is, then track it down in your init
scripts and kill it.

Cheers,
Allan.

Most assuredly. A 3ghz Pentium 4 is recommended. Don't know what
level of PPC. And a fancier video card.

Or you could make the bet that, by the time you are ready for HDTV,
myth will have decent xvmc support. This means driving the mpeg
decoder built into even lower end video cards these days. In that
case, a much slower processor could display HDTV.

However, the fundamental rule of hardware is never buy hardware
before you need it. The rule gets changed for the HDTV tuner
card because of the law. Otherwise, build for what you need now.

In the USA, however, I fear that the only reasons to build MythTV
right now are:

a) You are a believer, or
b) You like tinkering with the OS and device drivers
c) You want HDTV in a PC based PVR.
d) You are outside the USA.

Because frankly, if you are in the USA, and you just want a standard
definition PVR, you're going to be much better off in terms of time
spent and probably even money, just getting a Tivo, Replay or even
crap PVR from your cableco.

Thus, to me, HDTV is the whole point of the thing. The only reasonable
HDPVR I could get right now would be the Tivo-HD for DirectTV. It's
$1000 and locked up, and requires you subscribe to DirecTV. Of course
that will change.
