Re: [mythtv-users] Hang ups after Changing from RecordingOnly to None
Thanks, good observation! I'll give that a try tonight. Oh yeah, since my MySQL server is on a different machine, it constantly uses the network. Could explain why it hangs when requesting a reschedule too. I've noticed several sleeping processes [1] on the server too. Thanks again, JJ 1. If you look in the Media Library / Watch Recordings and don't see anything in the list as being recorded, make sure you are looking at the All Programs group (Press M). Mine is set to come up in the Default group view, which sometimes doesn't show what is being recorded, since I have it assigned to other than the default group. First let me say that I appreciate the work you do Axel, as well as everyone involved in this project, and this isn't meant to be anything negative toward you. It's just one of my hot-button issues :-) I just don't understand why it (software installation) can't be as easy as it is on a Mac. On a Mac, in most cases, installing software consists of dragging the application from the file you downloaded into the Applications folder. That's it. To uninstall the application, you drag it from Applications into the trashcan. There is no descent into dependency hell. No "glibc-2.4.5.2-rh9-1.6 is needed by your kernel, if you upgrade to 2.4.5.2-rh9-1.7, the new application will work, but your system won't boot the next time. And no, you can't use 2.4.5.2-mdk-1.6, you have to have 2.4.5.2-rh9-1.6" Sure, sometimes this can all be avoided by compiling from source, but that too is an advanced exercise, subject to dependencies, and can take a very long time on older hardware. All this isn't particular to open source operating systems either. It can be even worse on Windows, since you can't compile from source, and you must go off FTPing some obscure driver or patch to fix your installation. I certainly don't have an answer for this, do we statically link everything? Perhaps make some sort of adapter libraries so that new libraries can mimic older libraries and allow the older programs dependent on them to run? Apt, yum, dselect and others go a long way to make this a less painful experience, but they are a veil over the true problem. At times, it cannot be avoided, and the hideous underlying monster shows through. Thanks goodness for the dedicated people who package things up for us (ATrpms, KnoppMyth, etc.) and save us most of the headaches of installing and upgrading our systems. Try: nmap 192.168.0.100 Of course, change the IP address. You should see someone listening on 3306. If you verified the daemon is actually running: ps ax | grep mysql Then you might have a firewall problem. Try this if you think it's safe (it effectively disables your firewall): iptables -F INPUT iptables -F OUTPUT iptables -F FORWARD then do the nmap again. Re: [mythtv-users] Low power backend suggestions?
I haven't used it, but there is support for "wake a backend" in MythTV. One method writes the wake-up time into the PC's CMOS, then shuts down. The PC wakes itself to record. If you happen to have another PC that stays on all the time, you can send a Wake-On-LAN packet to the backend PC, assuming it has WOL support. As far as quiet, possibly lower power, you might squeeze the base system onto a compact flash drive. Set the recording drives to sleep when not in use. You could look into solar panels too :-) Regards, JJ On 17-Jan-2005, at 01:38, Greg Cope wrote: What's wrong with what you have? Regards, JJ On 16-Jan-2005, at 21:29, Robert Denier wrote: I haven't had your specific problem, but here is more of a general approach I might take. Check after each step. (Insert universal disclaimer here.) 1) Is your power supply adequate? Somehow I doubt thats the issue, but it might be worth a look. 2) Are the contacts dirty? A soft pencil eraser can sometimes be used to clean them but make sure not to leave any of the crums on the contacts. Alternatively a q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol or acetone should work as well. Acetone is probably slightly preferable. I don't think it leaves any kind of residue, but perhaps someone can check me on that. You may want to clean all the cards you test with in case it is some kind of wierd interference. 2) Reset to bios defaults. Make sure your settings are very conservative. 3) Look to see if there is a bios update that might fix the problem. Look both for updates to the motherboard and to the capture card. 4) Try with a different video card. You said you suspected that. I recommend very simple cards for testing. Of course if your kernel is setup to allow you to have a console on a serial port, a video card might not be needed. Still thats a bit of a pain, and it really doesn't solve the problem. 5) Take everything out of your system that is not essential for boot up and try it. 6) Is your hard drive still connected or any drives? Keep disconnecting them. Also take out all but one memory chip. Yes its unlikely to help but sometimes you want to truly get to the basics. 7) Try underclocking the system if you can. By underclocking I mean try to bring the pci bus below the 33Mhz that I think is the default. Most are linked to the normal fsb so if you change that the others follow. 8) If it still doesn't work after trying all that, well you've just spent hours trying to get a low cost capture card to work, you may want to consider buying a different card ;) -Robert Phill Edwards wrote: I have an AverMedia TVPhone 98 capture card which works (I've tried it an a Windows PC) but won't boot when I put it in my MythTV box. On your MythTV box, try running: ps ax | grep mysql You should see several processes of mysqld running. If not, the mysqld daemon isn't started, try: sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start and look for errors, also check /var/log/mysql.log for errors: sudo tail /var/log/mysql.log If mysqld is running, try: nmap localhost you should see: Starting nmap V. 2.54BETA31 ( www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) ... Try increasing the Bit Rate and Max. Bit Rate. Those will contribute to graininess (aka. artifacts). Therein lies one of the trade-offs. Graininess v. file size/processor load. Re: [mythtv-users] Getting VCR Recordings Into MythTV/MythVideo
Sounds like a good job for a plugin MythDub or the like. Regards, JJ On 12-Jan-2005, at 14:56, Cory Papenfuss wrote: Oh, I agree it would be useful, but since you are going to personally be there for the recording (ie. folks were thinking of it as a "manaul recording now") a simple visit to the tuner status page of mythweb or mythtv will tell you that the tuners are free and for how long. True. I've managed to do it as a manual recording by binding an aux input to a "bogus" channel. It never quite worked the way I thought it should, however. IIRC I couldn't watch that "channel" in livetv... I could only set a manual recording and then watch it once it started. It was quite a PITA. It's a hard choice actually. There is a push to make tools like MythTV "do everything" -- and that's particularly important when you put them in front of people who would find the suggestion of running a video recording program or catting the /dev/video0 as out of their experience. But no program can do everything, even all your a/v needs, and so people prioritize. Notice I'm not whining that it doesn't do it... merely suggesting that it would be nice. If I had the time (stupid Ph.D!), I might plink away at it, but right now I don't. Everyone has a priority on what they think is most important. That's the blessing/curse of open-source. You want it to everything. Fortunately, it's usually doable. -Cory *** ** * Cory Papenfuss * * Electrical Engineering candidate Ph.D. graduate student * * Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University * *** ** ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

[mythtv-users] Fail-safe power up
I hope this is appropriate for this list. If not, please tell me where to go :-) I'm looking for a fail-safe way to keep my Dish receiver powered up. I have ledxmit working on my MythPC. So far, all I've been able to find is a POWER code to send to the receiver. This only toggles the power. There is no POWER_ON code like some other equipment has. Right now I'm thinking I'll have to put a photocell on the front of the box, run it through and op-amp, and into the parallel port. I'll have to hack something together to do an irsend when the photocell goes dark. Lots of overhead engineering with that system. Anyone have any ideas? Incidentally, I have a UPS, so it should hardly ever go off, but I want to take into account the cat lying on the remote, etc. ADVthanksANCE! Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Removable media browser?
You could do this with irexec. Assign a button the would copy the file. If there is a way to get the currently highlighted selection from the frontend, it would be easy. If not, you could cook up something like so: Assume mplayer is currently playing the file, you have irexec run a script something like so: (this is pseudo-code) #!/bin/sh CURRENT_FILE=`ps ax | grep mplayer | cut "-d " -f10`# something like that cp "$CURRENT_FILE" /myth/video As I said, that's pseudo-code. You'd have to adjust the -f10 parameter, possible the "-d " parameter too. Regards, JJ On 03-Jan-2005, at 09:26, Juan C. [mythtv-users] Hard lockups when viewing Live TV or recorded TV PVR-250 ATI Radeon 7000.
First I want to say thanks to everyone involved with the MythTV application, ivtv, lirc, etc. This is great work you all have done! Here's a problem I'm having: If I select watch live TV, or view a recorded TV program, the system locks up solid, and I have to power off and on. Sometimes I get a few frames of video before it locks up. I can run an XTerm and view a .nuv file using mplayer with no problem. The system records fine. Since the system dies hard, I haven't been able to do much troubleshooting on the problem. I haven't seen anything in the logs to help with the problem. I have R'ed every FM I can find, to no avail. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
