DVD Audio Burning
I'm passing on the following questions from a friend. I can't answer these questions but if anyone can assist it would be appreciated. Here are the questions: I wonder if you or any of your knowledgeable friends could answer a few questions I have regarding the burning of audio on a DVD writable disk. I am not referring to the burning of video files or data files but of finalized audio tracks on a DVD disk that can be played back by a DVD player like one can when playing back standard audio CDs. I understand that Audio CDs are limited to a maximum of 99 tracks. Does the same apply when burning audio tracks on a blank DVD disk? When burning audio tracks on a blank DVD disk, does one use the same settings in Nero Burning Rom as one does when burning audio tracks on a standard CD writable disk? If the answer to the previous question is no, what are the necessary settings I should be sure to have when burning Audio tracks on the DVD disk? I hope you can help me with these questions as I have a project that requires me to burn as many audio tracks on a single disk as the system will allow. Thanks in anticipation, Regards Steve, Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] MSN Messenger: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype: steve1963 ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Regards, John. Winamp 5 Shortcut Keystrokes Press F1: To be taken online to the Winamp site to view help pages. Press ARROw up: Increases the volume. Press ARROW down: Decreases the volume. Press Left ARROW: Jumps back 5 seconds in the current playing track each time you press it. If you keep it held down, it acts as a continuous fast backward button. Press Right ARROW: Jumps forward 5 seconds in the playing track or continually fast forwards if held down. Press Z: To jump to the Previous track. This will start playing the previous track if tracks are already playing or it will cue the previous track for playing if play is currently paused. Press X: To play/restart/unpause a track. Press C: To pause and unpause a track. Press V: to stop playing a track. Press B: To jump to the next track. This will start playing the next track if tracks are already playing or it will cue the next track for playing if play is currently paused. Press R: To have a track or album repeated. Pressing R again turns this off. Press S: To have files played in shuffled (random) order. Pressing S again turns this off. Press J: To jump to a specific file in the Playlist Editor. You will find the Main player and Graphic Equaliser windows easier to use than the Winamp Video window, Playlist Editor and Mini-Browser windows. You may even wish to turn the latter two off for most of your Winamp sessions, so that you only have two windows to CONTROL TAB through. Press CONTROL K: to select a plugin. Press CONTROL R: to reverse the order of the Playlist. Press CONTROL B: To go to the end of the Playlist when in the Playlist Editor. Press CONTROL Z: To go to the start of the Playlist. Press CONTROL SHIFT R: to get tracks played in the Playlist Editor in a random order. Press SHIFT V: To stop a track and make it fade out as it stops. Press SHIFT ENTER: to enqueue the file with focus. Note: There are a few other standard hot keys but most screenreaders which use the numpad for their navigation may render these unusable, e.g. pressing numpad 1 should jump back 10 tracks, numpad 3 should jump forward 10 songs. Total Recorder 5.1 is Available
Total Recorder 5.1 is now available from www.highcriteria.com. Here is some information about this version: High Criteria Announces Total Recorder V5.1 High Criteria Inc. Announces the Immediate Availability of Total Recorder Professional Edition, Total Recorder Standard Edition and Total Recorder Developer Edition, Versions 5.1. February 14, 2005, Toronto, Canada High Criteria Inc, a world leader in computer audio recording systems, today announced the immediate availability of new versions of its flagship product, Total Recorder. The Standard Edition, Professional Edition and the Developer Edition have all been upgraded to Version 5.1. In addition to other standard maintenance, Total Recorder V5.1 offers a number of new features including: Customization of the user interface lets you show Total Recorder in the System Tray, use Always on Top mode, and set up different views (Compact, Full, or Customized). Global hotkeys can be set up and used for various functions within Total Recorder regardless of whether it is running in the background, the foreground, or it is minimized and Multimedia keyboard keys can be used for global hotkeys and shortcuts. A drag-and-drop feature lets you open a sound file by dragging the file from Windows Explorer and dropping it onto Total Recorder's main window. Presets can be used to store settings for your recording source and parameters. This allows you to quickly set the recording source and parameters as required. Total Recorder's scheduler is redesigned. The Schedule item dialog has been split into multiple tabs. Both the Professional Edition and Developer Edition V5.1 have been enhanced with the following new features: Ability to display and work with a sound image in a separate window. For example, you can change the size and scale of a sound image. During a scheduled job, Total Recorder can automatically reconnect to an Internet transmission or restart a program when problems arise, such as the failure of a connection. A scheduled recording can be muted. This is useful when a recording is scheduled in the middle of the night and you do not want to be disturbed. Generation rules can be used for some file tag fields, such as the Comment field. All Total Recorder V5.1 Editions are immediately available and may be downloaded for evaluation and purchase from the High Criteria Web Site at www.highcriteria.com . The evaluation versions of the programs will record for unlimited lengths of time, but will add an audible noise about every 60 seconds. V5.1 Standard Edition is available now for $11.95 U.S., V5.1 Professional Edition is available now for $35.95 U.S. and V5.1 Developer Edition is available for $99.95 U.S. All versions are available, free of charge, to previous purchasers. ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Review of Skype Voicemail Service
The review is not a part of the Mosen Explosion program. As I described previously the best way I know of to find the review is to go to the top of the home page at www.mosenexplosion.com and use your screen reader's find command and search for the word voicemail without the quotes. then with your down arrow or tab key tab until you get to a very long link that plays the file. I can't think of any other way to describe how to find the review and the direct URL to get to the link is too long to include in this message. Article: Justin Frankel Reveals Life After Winamp
This article can be found at www.betanews.com. -Steve. Justin Frankel Reveals Life After Winamp By Nate Mook , BetaNews January 3, 2005, 1:16 PM INTERVIEW Speaking out for the first time on life after AOL/Nullsoft, legendary Winamp creator Justin Frankel sat down with BetaNews to discuss his new endeavors. Starting a new company called Cockos, Frankel is leaving behind the mass market for his musical roots, but hints at revolutionary -- and presumably controversial -- things to come. BetaNews: Now that you've moved on from Nullsoft you've been working on a number of projects, including the Jesusonic. Tell us a bit about them. There were a few little pieces of software that I worked on for a bit, getting to the point of usability, and then haven't really touched in a while. Primarily these are a program called Assniffer (which is a HTTP sniffing program that logs the actual files transferred), and PathSync (which I use to interactively synchronize directories on different computers/drives). These are both available on cockos.com . I've also been working on some other little research projects, though they haven't gotten developed to the point where they're worth releasing/discussing. Which brings us to where the vast majority of my time has been spent lately, which is the Jesusonic. The Jesusonic is a tool for real-time effects processing of audio (which can be used on many different sources, such as vocals, guitars, basses, etc). Currently it is available in the form of software for Windows , Mac and Linux , and soon it will be available as a standalone device. BetaNews: What made you decide to develop Jesusonic and the software counterpart, which you recently released in preview form? How long have you been working on it? Justin Frankel: Back in April of this year, Christophe got a VIA Mini ITX motherboard for putting a computer in his bathroom (I guess it's because he's French), and after a band practice/jam session, we were discussing how nice it would be to have a little box that would be completely programmable for doing guitar effects. By saying completely programmable, we didn't mean having to go hook up the device to a computer -- rather, that you could just arrange effects and type in code on this small device on the fly. So I started developing the software with the intent of just having it run on a small embedded Linux system, on specific hardware. Once it starting taking shape and becoming useful, I realized that it should run on users' computers as well, for many good reasons. Not only is it useful on computers, it allows people who don't want to spend money on a Jesusonic hardware device to go ahead and write new effects for the Jesusonic. It allows people who do have a Jesusonic hardware device to use it on both their computer and on the dedicated hardware. Since more people will be using the Jesusonic, more people may be creating new effects for the Jesusonic, so it'll be good for everybody. BN: To whom is the product targeted? JF: Probably ranging from computer savvy musicians to programmers/hackers with an interest in music. That spectrum, though it may not be too large, is growing. The nice thing is that someone who is of the former group can use the Jesusonic, combining and tweaking existing effects, and downloading new effects and presets from Jesusonic.com. The people who are at the programmer end of the spectrum can use the Jesusonic the same way, but when they find a limitation in what they want to do they can easily (with no other tools or applications) edit new code on the fly and make it do exactly what they want. If they want to share their creations, they can upload them to Jesusonic.com. I have two big personal goals with Jesusonic. The first is to make hardware and software that I want to use. The second is to let musicians do things that they would not otherwise be able to. BN: Why the name Jesusonic? JF: Naming projects is often the hardest part. When I first started, it just came out. A moment of either stupidity (likely) or brilliance (not likely), we'll see. The name does have some interesting consequences. At the suggestions of friends, I made the hardware case into a cross shaped box, and named it the CrusFX 1000. We will also offer a non-cross shaped version, which will be more compact. Carrying the cross however makes for very interesting looks. BN: Obviously this product is more niche than some of your previous creations. Do you miss working on Winamp and products that will reach tens of millions? JF: Absolutely. The main thing I miss about working on Winamp is the ability to have such a fine control over the media player that I use on a day to day basis. As far as having products that reach millions of users, it's a double sided coin -- it's rewarding, but you make one little mistake and you hear from thousands of users, which is a very small percentage but a terrible feeling. I've shown time and again, I'm pretty good at making mistakes. BN: How do you

Fwd: The Future of Winamp
*** BEGIN FORWARDED MESSAGE *** On 11/11/2004 at 3:44 PM geoff chapman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: check this out, AOL pays 100 million dollars for this one little nullsoft company? amazing! just amazing! If anyone would like to educate me as to how one little program that does one little job, could possibly become worth, such a huge figure to one company to pay, to acquire another, I'd reeally love to understand this. something about the world I just don't get here yet obviously. ... goodness, one more thing! grin. From an article on the Betanews site: Death Knell Sounds for Nullsoft, Winamp By Nate Mook , BetaNews November 10, 2004, 1:26 PM The last members of the original Winamp team have said goodbye to AOL and the door has all but shut on the Nullsoft era, BetaNews has learned. Only a few employees remain to prop up the once-ubiquitous digital audio player with minor updates, but no further improvements to Winamp are expected. \ Winamp's demise comes as no surprise to those close to the company who say the software has been on life support since the resignation of Nullsoft founder and Winamp creator Justin Frankel last January. The marriage of Nullsoft and AOL was always one of discontent. After AOL acquired the small company in 1999 for around $100 million, the young team of Winamp developers was assimilated into a strict corporate culture that begged for rebellion. Although Nullsoft was initially given a long leash by AOL, It wasn't long until the two ideologies collided. Frankel and his team were accustomed to simply brainstorming ideas over coffee and bringing them to the masses without approval. So when Frankel and fellow Nullsoft developer Tom Pepper devised a decentralized peer-to-peer file sharing system, dubbed Gnutella, parent AOL was left in the dark. Gnutella was unveiled in March 2000, much to the chagrin of an unprepared AOL; executives feared the program would encourage copyright infringement and damage the company's pending merger with Time Warner. AOL quickly clamped down on Gnutella, but not before the software's source code leaked. Gnutella-based alternatives soon followed, igniting a peer-to-peer land grab that has yet to subside. But AOL knew it had to protect its investment and turn a profit from the freely available Winamp. Frankel and crew found themselves in hot water numerous times, but always escaped with little more than a proverbial slap on the wrist. However, growing displeasure reached a boiling point with Nullsoft's unsanctioned release of WASTE -- an encrypted file-sharing network -- in June 2003. Frankel threatened to resign after AOL removed WASTE , but remained with the company long enough to finish Winamp 5.0. Frankel's departure followed AOL layoffs and the closure of Nullsoft's San Francisco offices in December 2003. With AOL struggling to stave off declining subscriber numbers and 700 additional layoffs planned for next month, the company's focus has shifted away from supporting acquisitions such as Winamp. Despite the somber farewell, Nullsoft's former masterminds are proud of their accomplishments. Winamp helped start a digital audio revolution and boasts an incredible 60 million users per month. After a disappointing Winamp3 , Nullsoft developers returned to the drawing board and completed long-standing goals with the release of Winamp 5.0 in late 2003. Nullsoft's Shoutcast , which pioneered audio streaming over the Internet, is called the Net's best secret by its creator Tom Pepper and has reached 170,000 simultaneous users accounting for 70 million hours of listening each month. For its part, AOL says it remains committed to Winamp, stating it is a thriving product that AOL continues to support and will continue to support. But without those who poured their heart and soul into building the software, Winamp seems destined to meet a fate similar to fellow audio player Sonique , after Lycos saw the departure of its development team. Sonique has stagnated for years, and development ceased altogether last March. mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] When you have eliminated the impossible. whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. *** END FORWARDED MESSAGE *** Regards Steve, mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype: steve1963 MSN Messenger: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Fwd: I developed a free software to play music that blind people can use
From: Maurício Oliveira [EMAIL PROTECTED] Newsgroups: alt.comp.blind-users Greetings, I am a MCP, and long time ago I developed a simple program with the objective of allow the user to play music using the computer keyboard. It is not apropriated for professional uses, of course, but is very simple to use, it is free and doesn't require any kind of configuration. The software was not created especifically for handicapped people (by the way, I'm not blind), but several blind users were able to use it without any problem. Once the program is started, it is ready to play. Some settings like Volume, Instrument and Chords can be defined using the keys from F1 to F12 (the keys are already programmed to perform theese actions). If you are able to see a little, or have some friend that can describe an image for you, ask him to access this : http://pianoeletronico.tripod.com/images/piano_tela.gif . It is a screenshot of the main screen of the program, it shows how simple and easy to use the program is. One of the most interesting things in the program is the fact that you can play using any one of the 128 Instrument Set (from Gerenal MIDI Standard), and even press more than one key at the same time to play poliphonically. Play music using the computer keyboard may seen pointless if you have a real piano or eletronic keyboard, but consider the possibility to play anytime, anywere (perhaps in your lunch break, and I presume that you don't have a piano in you office!). You can download the program using this link : http://pianoeletronico.tripod.com/files/Setup_Piano_Eletronico.zip The program is absolutelly free, and it never expires. I created a Home-Page with all the information about the program, but unfortunelly the site is in Portuguese only by now. The link is http://pianoeletronico.tripod.com . If you have experience with Visual Basic, you can download an Open-Source (but simpler) version of the program at http://pianoeletronico.tripod.com/minipiano.html You can see an English version of the site (performed by Google translation engine) here : http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fpianoeletronico.t ripod.com%2Flangpair=pt%7Cenhl=pt-BRie=UTF-8ie=UTF-8oe=UT F-8prev=%2Flanguage_tools However, the translated version has some flaws, so I decided to perform my own translation of the most important information about the program. Here it comes : Electronic Piano 2.0 is a Freeware program (gratuitous) with the objective to allow the user to play musical notes and chords through the computer keyboard. Even making use of the MIDI resources of the sound card (like the avaibility of 128 musical instruments), the program doesn't require knowledge or configuration of Drivers or any device connected to the system. Basically, Electronic Piano 2.0 is a program indicated for people who simply wants to play music in the computer at any time, without have to purchase and install a professional music edition software (usually expensive). Characteristics of the Program : - 128 musical instruments available - 47 different sounds of drums and percussion - Poliphony (possibility to play more than one note at the same time) - Control of Main Volume and Pan - Combine up to 3 different musical instruments (any one of the 128) - Graphical panel with the keys - Note lenght is determined by the amount of time that the key is pressed - Execution of Major, Minor and 7 Chords by pressing only one key - 7 octaves can be selected Information about the programmer : Mauricio Antunes Oliveira is a Programmer/Analyst and a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) in Visual Basic since 1999. Currently, works as a consulter in São Paulo with Analysis and Programming. If you want any aditional information about the program before download it, you can contact me here, or e-mail me : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks for your interest ! Fwd: Need Script Testers For Free Music Software
- Original Message - From: Dean Schmidt [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm looking for people to test a new set of scripts that I've developed for a free MP3 and audio player that was written specifically to help people to learn music by ear. It allows you to make changes on the fly while the music is playing. You can change the pitch, slow down or speed up the music without changing the pitch, and set up a repeating loop. It has a multiband equalizer that is totally accessible with the scripts. It has play, stop, pause, fast forward, rewind, skip, volume adjust and balance adjust. The software is called Guitar and Drum Trainer 2, and despite its name it works with any MP3 or wav file regardless of which instruments or vocals are recorded. You can download it at: http://www.sofotex.com/Guitar-and-Drum-Trainer-2-download_L22894.html You'll need the free scripts to make it work well with Jaws. If you'd like to try the scripts out, contact me at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dean Schmidt *** END FORWARDED MESSAGE *** Regards Steve, mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype: steve1963 MSN Messenger: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Fwd: Can Skype live up to the Net phone hype?
*** BEGIN FORWARDED MESSAGE *** On 28/09/2004 at 12:25 PM Tom Kaufman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thought you all would appreciate seeing this; it comes from another list that I am on. Tom KaufmanSubject: FTP Internet News Can Skype live up to the Net phone hype? Can Skype live up to the Net phone hype? Published: September 27, 2004, 10:00 AM PDT By Ben Charny Staff Writer, CNET News.com When Sun Chun first heard of Skype and its promise of free, high-quality Internet phone service, he figured the claims were mostly hype. Chun, who generally considers himself an early adopter, had tried broadband phone services before, only to suffer lost calls and garbled conversations. So he was skeptical when reports began circulating a year ago of revolutionary peer-to-peer software that could render traditional phone companies obsolete, much as file-swapping services threatened the recording industry. The jury is still out on whether Skype will take down the Bells. But Chun, for one, is kicking himself for waiting so long to try out the software. The conversations with our friends are surprisingly clear and crisp, Chun, a San Jose, Calif., tech worker, said in an e-mail. Calls to my friend in Australia were also of equal crisp quality. So now, I am urging all my friends and family to install this incredible software. Bottom line: Despite rough edges, the service has won over a number of early adopters. But Skype won't likely bring down traditional phone services anytime soon. Just over a year after Skype's launch, the Luxembourg-based upstart is showing signs of being the real deal. But as with early predictions about peer-to-peer technology and the music business, the expectations about an overthrow of the telephone industry remain unfulfilled. In fact, as much as Skype presents a budding competitive challenge to the old-line companies, it's also looking for ways to cooperate with them. The start-up voices lofty goals of expanding the way people communicate, but it still faces the down-to-earth demands of broadening its own sources of revenue. And although users like Chun say they're impressed by Skype's voice quality, there are still some rough edges. Both caller and receiver must have the voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) software installed. Calls to ordinary phone customers will still have a cost. And the software works only on PCs and a handful of niche devices--not regular phone handsets. VoIP didn't become successful until it moved off the PC, said Sara Hofstetter, a senior vice president at Net2Phone, a VoIP provider that, unlike Skype, does not use peer-to-peer software. You say you want a revolution? Even taking into account such pitfalls, Skype signals a major upheaval for the phone industry. Because of its peer-to-peer architecture, Skype requires absolutely no infrastructure and only minimal capital investment compared with phone companies that own their own lines and switches. Rather, Skype's 750,000 daily users create the network on the fly, sharing computer resources to manage traffic flow and ensure call quality. Skype claims its network can grow organically without the need to add new equipment to support increased traffic demands. Skype goes mobile This network free concept is unprecedented, even for Net phone providers that are already turning the century-old telephone industry on its ear. With Skype, one no longer needs a few hundred thousand dollars in start-up costs typically associated with Net phone service, let alone the billions of dollars in investments to become a traditional phone company. I knew it was over when I downloaded Skype, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell said recently. When inventors are distributing.a program to talk to anybody else, and the quality is fantastic, and it's free, it's over. The world will change now inevitably. Skype has turned heads for its unique blend of technology and rapid grassroots adoption. The company claims more than 22 million downloads since the software was first made available in August 2003. It is currently signing up about 60,000 new registered users every day--numbers that draw comparisons to free software downloads that swept the Internet during the late 1990s, such as the ICQ instant messaging service. Its growth rate is sky high, said Tim Draper, managing director at Draper Fisher Jurvetson , which has invested $9 million into the company. I don't think there's been this speed of adoption since Hotmail. We are thrilled with what Skype's been able to do. We think it's a global phenomenon that will change communication for the better. Following in Kazaa's footsteps Skype has also drawn comparisons to Kazaa, the wildly popular file-swapping software created by Jan Friis and Niklas Zennstrom --the same pair of developers behind Skype. Like Kazaa, Skype uses peer-to-peer technology that connects PCs and turns them into a powerful, collaborative network without the need for central servers to direct

Fwd: Winamp For The Blind list details
*** BEGIN FORWARDED MESSAGE *** On 21/09/2004 at 9:15 PM Chris Skarstad [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all Dave Williams did a fantastic little series on Winamp 5, and he was nice enough to mention the list I run, it's called Winamp for the blind. Doubtless some of you are already on the list I know this for a fact, but for those of you who aren't I thought I would pass on the details. Back in May of this year, the list moved from Smartgroups, over to freelists.org, so obviously, the list address has changed. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a lot of feedback from smartgroups about moving the list, and a lot of people aparently got left in the lirch. It certainly wasn't my intention to do this, and I guess the list moving didn't get publicized a lot. In any case, the list has been running strong at Freelists.org since mid may, and things are going great. We had a website up for a while, but unfortunately, it's down until we can find a new provider for it, and that process is still being worked on, have no fear, we haven't forgotten it I promise. Ok, onto the details. To subscribe, send a blank e-mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put the word subscribe in the subject line. note that the word subscribe should be in all lower case and without quote marks around it. You should then receive a confirmation e-mail back, so replying to that*should* subscribe you to the list. A special note to Outlook and outlook express users... Some folks have reported to the list admins that they've had trouble subscribing, and in looking at the headers of the messages, we were able to determine that they were all using Outlook or Outlook express, and they all had the option to include the original message in the reply turned off. Still others had the option to show signature in the reply, and in both cases, this caused the Freelists mail server software to get really confused, so if you're using Outlook and outlook express, it is strongly advised that you turn off the feature that includes your signature in the reply and turn on the feature that includes the original message in the reply. If you do this, the server software will not play up and things should befine. We send a frequently asked questions FAQ file to the list once every month, and if you have a freelists account you can view this any time you like. We update the FAQ when necessary, so watch for a message when the FAQ gets posted. If you're first joining the list and you don't know thing 1 about Winamp, read this FAQ file first. It answers a whole lot of the newby questions all in one place and provides many resources for you to do more research. Winamp For The Blind is a fun list, but I'm going to be honest and very up front when I tell you that it isn't designed for the very beginning windows user, or someone who isn't very technically oriented. Winamp is fantastic and it does a lot of great stuff. it's great if you just want to listen to ACB Radio and other stations, but to harnis the full power of the application, you should most definitely be an intermediate to advanced windows user. Most people on the list understand this and a good lot of the people on the list are intermediate and advanced windows users, so again, if you're just beginning, you might like to learn as much as you can about the windows operating system as you can before joining. Your experience will certainly help you to understand some of the more complex concepts that Winamp has. If you've heard the review Dave did, you know that it has a lot of check boxes, list boxes and other things, but sometimes the way they are displayed can be a bit different and may be confusing if you're just learning how windows works. So some experience in windows is recommended, but most certainly not a requirement. Hope this information is helpful to some of you, and again I thought Dave did a fantastic job in his review about the media library. In almost an hour, he covered a whole lot of the stuff that we talk about on the list in a daily basis such as how to raise and lower Winamp's volume independent of software speech, how to increase the number of streams in the media library, and other stuff. So hopefully the archives will be brought bang up to date and when we get our website back up, we'll certainly link to both parts of the review. Thanks. *** END FORWARDED MESSAGE *** Regards Steve, mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype: steve1963 MSN Messenger: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Fwd: Remaster craftsman
*** BEGIN FORWARDED MESSAGE *** On 23/08/2004 at 1:24 PM Barbara! [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Remaster craftsman Posted August 22 2004 By Lawrence A. Johnson Classical Music Writer Sun Sentinel.com, South Florida In the recording industry's infancy, the voices of artists such as Enrico Caruso, Luisa Tetrazzini, Beniamino Gigli, Nellie Melba and Tito Schipa provided music aficionados with their first exposure to opera. Yet the sound emerging from these primitive recordings was often a tinny, ghostly reflection of what these singers sounded like in the flesh. And today, the scratchy surfaces of the era's fragile shellac 78s bear the pops and clicks of intervening decades, requiring immense patience and concentration from listeners. With the advent of the digital era, celebrated musicians of the early 20th century have gotten a new lease on life. And no one has done more to make their artistry sing again than remastering wizard Ward Marston. For three decades now, the Pennsylvania native has provided a bridge to our musical past. Marston is a sonic magician, hailed for his restorations of antique, often intractable historical recordings. With 500 CDs worth of material released to date, his work has garnered international acclaim and several honors including a Grammy and Gramophone Award. You want to get the sound as natural as possible, said Marston, from his home outside of Philadelphia. I listen to as much live music as I can to keep the sound of real music in my ear. I always try to make the record sound like music -- not like records. Much as art experts repair damaged paintings and film historians refurbish deteriorating movies, Marston is the acknowledged leader in the field of audio restoration, approaching the task with the precision and meticulous concentration of a master surgeon. The presence, immediacy and striking amount of sonic detail that emerge from Marston's remastered work are little short of astonishing. In Marston's second go-round restoring Caruso's complete recordings for the Naxos label, the Italian tenor's vibrant voice fairly leaps out of the speakers with impact, dynamic nuance and tonal subtleties that could only be guessed at previously. Other sonic excavation work has brought soprano Nellie Melba, violinist Maud Powell and tenor Tito Schipa to an entirely new generation of music collectors. The fact that the 52-year-old opera fan has been blind since birth has been only a modest impediment to his work. Marston admits it may have enhanced his legendary ear for pitch and intonation, but claims no special qualities over his sighted colleagues. I think it's probably true that I can focus my attention perhaps more, he said. But I'm the only blind person doing this, and there's plenty of other people with eyesight doing great transfer work, too. Cache of Caruso Marston's fascination with the artists on historical recordings came at a very young age, when the 5-year-old unearthed a cache of Caruso 78s at his great-uncle's house. Marston said he will never forget the moment when he played the first Caruso aria. I was absolutely enthralled, he recalls. It was like I was immediately transported to a different place. It really took me into another world. I wanted to know more about this kind of singing. Marston's uncle was an avid collector with hundreds of 78s. Soon young Ward was delving into arias and songs sung by John McCormack, Tetrazzini, Amelita Galli-Curci, Ernestine Schumann-Heink and Tita Ruffo. When he was 8, his uncle gave Ward his entire collection, and the boy scoured thrift shops for more. I was fortunate in that I grew up at a time when the LP was replacing the 78 and people were discarding them, he says. Marston's musical interest quickly expanded to orchestral music, especially performances led by the great Leopold Stokowski, who has remained a favorite. Honing his craft Marston's hobby took on a practical application and charted his future while he was attending Williams College in Massachusetts, where he earned his history degree. Working at the college classical radio station, he became frustrated by the difficulties in playing old recordings of extended works. I wanted to play 78s, he recalls. I tried to figure out a way to join the sides together so I could play an entire symphony without flipping the records over every four minutes. Rather than the standard tape-splicing method, Marston used a stereo tape recorder, putting one 78 on one channel and the next on the other. He then overlapped the two to achieve seamless side joins and ensure uninterrupted musical continuity without jarring interruptions. After graduation, Marston produced and engineered a comprehensive 58-show series on Philadelphia public radio, Stokowski: The Philadelphia Years. Fwd: Updated JAWS scripts for Chatterbox
*** BEGIN FORWARDED MESSAGE *** On 10/08/2004 at 7:26 PM Becky Buckner [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi everyone Well, by now some of us have the new ChatterBox client, but most of us still have the old one. It's pretty sure that in the near future we will all be upgrading to the next version of ChatterBox. Many of us found out that our current scripts don't work with the new ChatterBox. That's why Doug and I (especially Doug Lee) have worked quickly to rewrite those parts of the scripts that don't work in the new client. We have finished a brand new package of scripts that work with both the old client and the new one. In addition, this new script set corrects a couple of minor bugs that were in the July 25 scripts. Whether you have the old ChatterBox client or the new one, we suggest you install this new script set that will surely smooth the upgrade to the new client. As always, you can read about what's new in the scripts by going to http://www.vocal-computing.com/whatsnew.htm Or you can go directly to the scripts page and click on the appropriate link for your version of JAWS by going to http://www.vocal-computing.com/cbscripts.htm Thanks for everyone's patience. *** END FORWARDED MESSAGE *** Regards Steve, mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype: steve1963 MSN Messenger: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Audio Quality of Skype
This is definitely a matter of personal opinion but I think Skype is one of the best voice chat programs I've ever used with very clear audio which is equal to or perhaps better than phone quality. *** REPLY SEPARATOR *** On 16/06/2004 at 5:20 PM Gary Wood wrote: Hi Steve. Is the quality of speech on Skype phone quality, or is it like Ventrilo, or the voicechat programs? Fwd: The Audio Network
*** BEGIN FORWARDED MESSAGE *** From: Andy Baracco [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This message is about the Audio Network, a website for the blind using audio web pages, controlled by standard keyboard navigation. It is the first site in the world that needs no adaptive technology to be accessible by blind and partially sighted users. The site is free and there is no cost involved whatsoever. The address of the site is a follows, after which we'd like to tell you about some of the things you can find on the site that may be of interest. Please feel free to pass this message along to anyone who you think might find it useful. www.yrguk.com There are many parts to the Audio Network. For example, it is the only place on the internet where you can listen to BBC Radio schedules for the forthcoming week in audio. Speaking of radio, there is a whole section of radio stations, where you can change channels at the touch of a button, without having to worry about annoying pop ups, registrations etc. If you like puzzles, quizzes, and games, then you will love the Audio Network. There are over 50 different trivia quizzes, puzzles, and games, ranging from snakes and ladders, baseball, and an evening at the greyhound races, through to straight trivia quizzes such as Frustration, Minefield, and who wants to win a million points. There is also an extensive range of music quizzes, and a difficult maze to work your way around (avoiding the trap doors of course!). The quizzes are fun for all ages, educational, and informative. There is also a daily selection of puzzles, ranging from crosswords to geography, through national anthems, and even a spot the liar competition. If drama is your thing, there are short stories and original radio plays from Hosiprog Presentations for your pleasure, as well as links to audio described movies provided by NTT. There is an inspirational corner, where you can listen to words of wisdom, and choose your colour of the day - you can even get a virtual fortune cookie from the genie! If sports is your thing, we have one of the most comprehensive sports sections dedicated to blind sports online! You can listen to goalball, blind soccer, or blind bolws, just as if you were there at the event! You can also find information about blind sports, and how to get involved. Want to send somebody a greetings card? It can be difficult to navigate if you are relying on the big guys such as Yahoo. The Audio Network offers an extensive range of audio poetry from classical and amateur authors, which are ready to listen to and send to your friends as an audio greetings card at the touch of a button! Want to have your own page? The newest section of the Audio Network allows you to do just that! The section is called World Visions, and quite simply, you can have your own section on the site, to put your point of view, discuss your hobbies etc etc. - you don't even have to be able to record, we'll do that for you! And don't forget, the International Interactive Audio Magazine for the Blind - Soundaround - is also available through the Audio Network. June's edition is now online, and you can catch up with a whole 12 months of previous editions too! We hope you take a look at the site, we are sure you will find somthing to enjoy!
