Quick Self-Introduction and First PESO - Jackson

2007-12-12 Thread pdml
Howdy,

I've been lurking on the list for a little while and have decided it's time
to say "hi".

Hi. :)

I am getting started with my first DSLR, the Pentax K100D. I took some
photography in high school and college but have never had the time or
resources to be able to develop my skills (pardon the pun). I love to shoot
photos but unfortunately am not very good at it yet.

I've enjoyed following the list for the past few weeks, particularly the
PESOs, and especially the comments, critique and suggestions thereof.

So, I submit for your evisceration -- er, I mean, critique -- the following
shot. The photo was taken after a day at the fair in October, on my front
lawn. I have modified it somewhat (too much? let me know).

http://sethbienek.com/photos/PESO/Jackson.htm

I am looking forward to learning from your thoughts and criticism!

Best Regards,

Seth

JOBO SE9108 SD->CF Adapter

2007-12-12 Thread P. J. Alling
After diligently searching the Internet I've come to the conclusion that
this is the only one of these things officially imported into the USA,
Funny how it took a couple of years for someone to notice that there
might be a market for them here. Anyway has anyone here tried one of
these. (These adapters in general and the JOBO in particular). It
would certainly simplify the lives of the people planning to keep their
*ist-D as a backup camera. Just wondering. By the way has anyone
figured out how both Adorama and B&H can get away with charging the most
expensive mailing costs for something that could be sipped first class
with insurance in a jiffy pack?

Yes, great exhibition.

I saw it in 2006 in Melbourne and it's currently on in Sydney (Darling Harbour)
until Boxing Day. Here's the details:

Well worth a look.

bit bin, I'm afraid - from my point of view... I just don't find the
subject matter very intresting no matter how
you crop it. if it were Fifth ave and the woman was loaded down with
posh packages
there would be a story there. I don't think it is quite strong enough
to exist only as patterns.
This is the first I've seen of it, btw - too crazed earlier to look at much.

I also couldn't tell ,until you mentioned it, that the woman was
stepping off a curb... not that it matters.

Well now they have contact cleaner and tuner cleaner, (the tuner cleaner
has lube the contact doesn't), I didn't recognize the primary chemical
agent in the contact cleaner, didn't think to write it down, and I'm
trying to find it's formula on line to see what it might do the plastic.
Yes of course they _don't_ list it on their site.

I missed the original (busy few days at work) but I'll say that this

  1. In focus
  2. Properly exposed (maybe a bit dark)
  3. ... and kinda dull.

Thank you.

The sky isn't blank, but it is fog on cloud. That's what you get on
the Isle of Man fairly often in late October/November... :-)

Voigtlander have a 40/2 and a 58/1.4
http://www.cameraquest.com/Voigt_SL2.htm

MF, not Pentax, but perhaps worth considering. I want a
moderately long lens and am trying to decide between
their 58 and Pentax 50/1.4.

It's a controlled substance in Canada.
The various governments regulate who can buy it, and taxes the living hell
out of it, and now are also in the game of regulating where it can be
smoked.
It makes for a weird situation. On the one hand, the tax windfall for the
various levels of government is likely in excess of 300 billion dollars
anually, on the other hand, the government funded health departments would
prefer that we don't smoke.
This pits the interests of Revenue Canada against those of Health Canada on
paper, though I suspect the reality is that the government knows who is, in
reality, paying for government funded health care.
In the winter, all the tobacco lepers have to freeze themselves if they want
to smoke, since they can no longer smoke indoors, except for private
residences.
One of the provinces has enacted a law which will prohibit smoking in a car
if ther is a child (in Canada that is anyone under 18 years of age) in it,
and there is some talk that they will extend it to anyplace where a child
is, which would make for an interesting enforcement problem

The FA50/1.4 is your best choice right now. The 50/1.2 is a very nice lens,
but any 50/1.4 that Pentax has ever made is a better lens. My 50/1.2 is
doing journeyman's duty right now as a portrait lens, because it doesn't
have the bitingly sharp rendering of my 50/1.4s (I have a half dozen of
them).

1.4 EX converter

The optical quality is quite good - AF is normal for me - I've not
noticed any issues to speak of - it has been used with an *istD and
K10D. As far as ruggedness goes, after the
first year, a screw came loose inside the zooming mechanism. It had
to be sent in for repair. I have used it for 3 seasons of little
league baseball action shooting. The lens has been used for more
shots than all my other lenses combined - somewhere near 30,000
frames. So it has been pretty good. At the time I purchased it and
even today, there is not another choice in this range. I needed
something with very good optical quality that could reach out to at
least 300mm and be constant at least to F4.

So I am happy with it and will continue to use it until it finally
dies.

Many thanks to all who have replied with your ideas. I felt that

I think cropping the right side to about where the right hand child's

Re: Hunting for new standard lens

2007-12-12 Thread Bob Sullivan
Boris,

I would second Cotty's recommendation. Pick a 1.4 over the 1.2. The
1.2's have some compromises to get to f1.2. I cannot see any of those
in the f1.4's. And an A50/1.4 or M50/1.4 may be available at a
reduced price.

As for 43mm limited vs FA50/1.4, I have carried and shot with both.
For a time, I carried the FA50/1.4 in the 4 lens kit (A20/2.8, 31/1.8,
50/1.4, and 77/1.8). Recently, I have substituted the 43 limited for
the 50/1.4. There are not that many low light opportunities for me
and shake reduction has helped. So I am trying the extra rendering
skills of the 43mm limited.

Regards, Bob S.

Didn't get a chance to look at this one until now.

The degree of movement and subsequent blur of the people, taking up

Color used to be lubricated IIRC. I'm not sure that's called for here.
They used to sell something we called tuner cleaner, (which wasn't it's

the brushed aluminum front panels on stereo components really nicely.
It's funny but I never thought of cleaning actual contacts with it.

Re: OT - Almost Like a Gig - What to Charge?

2007-12-12 Thread graywolf
Charge a per hour, plus expenses (I used to add 15-25% to the expenses as sort
of a handling charge). Give them everything you shoot that is worthwhile, with
non-exclusive rights (charge 300-400% higher if they want exclusive rights)
which means you can still use the images yourself for non-competing purposes.
This is the way commercial work is usually quoted.

I would always give a firm quote if wanted, but it was actually an estimate of
the above plus 50%, in case I goofed.

I have the K50 1.4 and have owned the K50 1.2 in the past. The 1.2 has
bigger bragging rights, but really, having had both, I would not go for
the 1.2 - the 1.4 is a superb lens - I'm sure many here would agree with
me there. You'll love the 50mm 1.4 in any guise.

Hi, Dave,
My monitor may need calibrated again, but the foreground is too dark
for my eye. Also, the center mound's top surface is exactly in line
with the horizon. Just too much of a distraction.

The "color" stuff was residue-free, probably rebadged CRC. The
non-color stuff was not.
I discovered this the hard way.

The "color" one was designed to assure that the colors wouldn't fade or run.

One time when I bought some contact cleaner at R/S, they had two
different cans:

  1. TV Contact cleaner
  2. Color TV contact cleaner

The stuff for "color" was a dollar more expensive. I could never
figure out what the difference could possibly have been.

All photographs are ordinary. In the past 160 years everything has been done,
over, and over, and over again. So, they are all ordinary, but some are
interesting despite that.
