GESO: Spring flowers

2013-08-05 Thread David Mann
I'd still call it winter but our garden is starting to come into flower.

These photos could do with some better lighting but the sun is still a bit too
low in the sky when it's at the right angle. I know the first one is out of
focus but it's the only one of that flower I managed to get with decent light...

Dave

Luiz, I have had two copies of F 70-210/4-5.6 (which I think is also ED
but such a marking is not present). This one:

I cannot possibly recommend it enough. Gorgeous optic.

I had little luck with 70-210 by Takumar (M42) and Pentax, but probably
because both lenses were rather banged when I got them. used for a short
while a diff 70-210 sample that I remember as good, but being a borrowed
lens I never got to test it.

I'll be quickly testing the SMC-M next week, and probably I'll trade.
these nights I'll be testing the 80-320, the SMC Takumar 200mm/4 and
whatever other long lens I gather against a far wall with tiles and
street lamps. if possible, I'd test both 200mm with this scene, but
don't think this will be possible. we'll see...

One of the much used props in the studio a partner and I shared with some
architects in the 60s. Dry ice in a bowl in the tub worked, as did having just
their eyes and hair peering over the side.

84 Vanderwater. Still there, but empty and dark, trash scattered street.

Of course, it was a different time, but when we had time to spare we just
called the major agencies and asked for a model or two from their head-shot
book. I usually spoke of the phone with the girls to give them an idea of my
interests, which gave them ideas on what clothes to bring and what lighting to
make up for.

I helped with makeup if needed, and preferred to keep it simple. Now-a-days you
have to be an artist to pencil and color in "smokey eyes" as well as deal with
whether to accentuate or hide the multicolor inks decorating so much skin.

My favorite shoots were day long trips into the abandoned towns and buildings
in the SF / Sacramento area. Never had a model be skittish about going off with
me. In fact, changing in the open next to my VW Bus seemed to be their choice.
Even with inexperienced models both there and in Seattle 20 years ago none
seemed embarrassed to be nude or almost nude when changing without knowing me
well if at all.

My professional attitude and non-threatening manor seemed to allay fears by the
models. If they were nervous or timid the planned shoots were designed to calm
them. Always seemed to work out.

Exactly, Don. You have to put yourself in the mindset of folks going
to craft fairs: looking for inexpensive gifts for friends and
relatives. Maybe something decorative for the bathroom. They are not
looking for expensive art, especially large framed objects.

OTOH, people going into galleries are possibly in the market and frame
of mind for art.

Thanks Bill. That seems to be the consensus. Now I wonder what became of the
bird I shot in flight. Never saw him rise from the river, so he must have been

Re: Re: Geso My fair entries for this year

Our county fair had photography contest for the 1st time this year
9several hundred entries). I entered 5 prints & won one best in show
(for the vineyard photo I posted here awhile back) 2 blues and a purple
ribbon ( explained to me as second place for best in show) I will try to
post the latter tomorrow for any who might be interested. The Iowa State
fair starts this week & I have nothing entered but hope to get there to
check out the competition which I expect to be stiff. Our cash rewards
about the same as I remember. No digital entries.

All this is my way of wishing you much success!

Both, the file names that start with a # are digital entries.

Vying for ribbons or cash?

Both, first to 5th place ribbons and then you get a small amount of
cash for each ribbon. from $2.00 to $0.50 depending on the placement

Both, the file names that start with a # are digital entries.

Vying for ribbons or cash?

Both, first to 5th place ribbons and then you get a small amount of
cash for each ribbon. from $2.00 to $0.50 depending on the placement

Re:I went to a street fair Saturday afternoon

2013-08-05 Thread Don Guthrie
Larry I have had the same thoughts & reaction to our local Saturday
crafts fairs. One very good local pro offers about 20 different photos
all done in exactly same style (sorta Instagram look.) As the summer has
gone on her inventory has dwindled so she is selling. I do think people
may like one photo and buy a different one as they are looking more for
something to go with their decor more than they are looking for art to
treasure.
I have been told it is difficult to sell large matted prints. But if you
want to sell, your best bet is 5 note-cards with photos wrapped in a
ribbon and priced around 15-20 bucks. Everybody needs greeting cards or
knows someone who does.

Someday when I retire I may like you set up and find out for myself.

There was a little street fair in Santa Cruz this weekend, and while
I was downtown I took a few minutes to peruse the booths. There
were a couple of photographers there selling prints. I didn't talk
to them, and can only assume that they've been selling at fairs long
enough to tune their inventory to what sells. Based on that assumption,
if I tried to make a living selling prints at a street fair, ether I,
or my self respect as an artist, would quickly starve to death.

When I was in high school, the father of one of my best friends would
sell his paintings at art shows. He basically had three paintings
that he'd do, with minor variations on the boat, the dock, and maybe
the sky. He found what sold, and that was what he painted.

I suspect that it would be educational sometime to print up a bunch
of my photos, and set up a booth at a street fair sometime, just to
see what photosi, if any, people liked well enough to spend money on.

I'm sure that I would learn a lot from such a weekend. I just don't
know whether I'd learn more about my photography, or the artistic
tastes of the American public.

Re: What if Pentax did a Kickstarter?

2013-08-05 Thread Darren Addy
Don't know if anyone has seen the follow-up story on Petapixel, but
Zenit's Kickstarter has raised over $1 MILLION dollars and has 18 days
still left to go in the campaign. Roughly 2500 copies of the lens have
been "pre-ordered".

I do think that there are some lessons that Pentax (and other
companies) could learn from this. Over half of the million dollars was
raised by the people buying this lens for $350 or $400 ("funding" at a
level that gets a production lens, I should say). People paid MORE for
the privilege of getting one of the FIRST lenses produced (low serial
numbers), or having something engraved on the lens, and some people
paid up to $2600 for packages that included a trip and the lens. Zenit
was also smart in making two versions (brass and black) available for
this lens, so they could effectively double the number of funding
points (making separate ones for each lens version).

I have to believe that this has wildly exceeded Zenit's initial goals.
Knowing exactly how many are "preordered" will allow them to source
the materials at bulk quantity prices, as well as gauge potential
future demand (should they wish to continue offering it into the
future, or have some to sell as stock).

It is also worth noting that this is for a lens design that is highly
"flawed" by modern optical standards.

This is one of my favorite photos. Taken long ago with a Spotmatic.

I missed the focus. They ran from a brightly lit part of the yard
into shadow and I didn't react fast enough so the original was
underexposed. Just think, if I had the fancy auto-focus,
auto-exposure camera of today it would be be a technical masterpiece!
Well, probably not. More likely it would be mis-focused and poorly
exposed in a different way.

I scanned it from a 13 year old faded slide, cropped it, tried to fix
the exposure, and cloned out a bunch of junk that was cluttering up
the yard.

Anyway, as technically poor as it is, this photo has always been and
continues to be a favorite because of the content. I'm going to make a
small print. It will make a nice addition to the family photos that
hang on the wall.

If you want to try a 200mm that will surprise you, give the old
Tele-Takumar 200mm f5.6 preset lens a try. Very lightweight (49mm
filter size) and wonderful colors and contrast in sunlight situations.
Cheap too.

i am a strong art (and craft) appreciator and often visit galleries and some
street fairs in Denver (and when i travel); in general, i will not go to just
any street fair because the "artistry" is much as you describe; at the better
fairs (e.g. Cherry Creek Arts Festival), i still find that painting and
photography are the most oft-debased art forms; something about the fair
audiences means that success seems to pair with (artistic and personal) glibness

i find myself spending much longer in the booths of fabric, glass, ceramic,
jewelry and other artists; still a mixed bag, but there's something about these
other arts that allows more true creativity in the commercial context of a
street fair; i am more often challenged by these artists' works

galleries are another matter; good ones keep truly interesting and challenging
art coming, and painting and photography seem stronger in the gallery world;
despite the many flaws of the gallery system, i would probably be much happier
pursuing an art career through galleries

Thanks, Don.

Grounds for Sculpture is a magical place because of the combination of
the art works and the magnificent landscaping. It also happens to
have a great restaurant:

Re: PESOs Juvenile Great Blue Heron

2013-08-05 Thread Paul Stenquist
Could be you're right, Ann. Although the brown markings on the neck of your
juvenile heron are similar to those on the neck of my guy. It could be that the
heron I shot in flight disappeared into the brush somewhere and this guy was a
co-conspirator. BTW, this little stretch of wetland river is in a suburban
area, across the street form office buildings, but I've shot numerous herons
and egrets there. There are numerous lakes in the area, so it's not too
surprising, but at a glance no one would mistake it for a bird sanctuary. Shot
some kind of tern-looking thing there yesterday as well.

I went to a street fair Saturday afternoon

2013-08-05 Thread Larry Colen

Re: PESO sunset planespotting

2013-08-05 Thread Larry Colen

Thanks Dan and Rick.

In any set of photos, there will rarely be a unanimous favorite.
For that matter, with just about any artistic expression, the
stronger that some people will like something, the more that
other people will dislike it, and often for the same reasons.

Where one person will look at two photos and like the uncluttered
photo of the airplane against the sky, and wonder why I even bothered
showing the photo with the cluttered distracting background, another
person will wonder why I bothered with the picture of just an airplane
with no context, and will really like the one that shows the hustle
and bustle of an active airport in the background.

I would much rather a photo evoke strong feelings of both love and
hate, rather than have it disappear without a ripple into a sea
of indifference.

Hi Everyone:

A few weeks ago, I finally upgraded to Lightroom 5 and spent some time watching
Julian Kost's tutorial videos, which I think are done very well.

I took a few minutes here to play with the Upright/Perspective Tool
and the Radial Filter and thought I'd share. Has anyone else tried
these tools? Do you like them?

What are the general impressions of Lightroom 5?

Cheers, Christine
