But the title is, well, I can see where it is coming from, but yet I don't subscribe to the idea. The title doesn't bother me. Isn't there some species of mushroom that has a name close to Madonna? I just Googled madonna mushroom and nothing came up, so maybe I'm off-base there. In any event, Google Madonna; the first seven items have to do with the entertainer, and only two items on the first page don't pertain to her, those being a university and a hospital. The second Google page is all about the entertainer. So, I'm not sure who's being offended by cavalier use of the word Madonna? I think the title's fine, as it looks like the larger mushroom is protecting the other, much like the Blessed Mother protects her flock... I thought this photo is rather interesting (albeit not perfect): http://komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Mixed-2011/_IR30886.jpg I used 0.5 s exposure time (ISO-400) and the Metz flash on A setting. I tried the same sort of effect previously, but with less success... It seems to me that A setting of the flash (as opposed to P-TTL) might work better for this effect, but I don't have a good logical explanation why. I'd like to play with shorter exposure times (compensated by higher ISO), so that the ambient light would still be sufficient, while somewhat reducing the motion (and *shake*) blur. Any suggestions and ideas are welcome. And here is one more funny shot: http://komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Mixed-2011/_IR30827.jpg Both very good shots, but I especially like the first. I posted this on my colour photoblog last week, and because it's technically lacking (noise, purple fringing, etc.) I didn't post it on-list. However today I've changed my mind. PESOs - Warbler?
Must have waited and stalked for 1/2 hour before this little fellow gave me a few quick, good looks. These two are the best unobstructed views he gave me: http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/warbler.html I was quite pleased that he let me get quite close. Anyone know what this is? PESO - Skimming Across the Lake
I know I posted a couple of flying swan pix last year, but damn it, I think they're beautiful birds, and seeing these big guys in flight is most awe-inspiring (at least to me): http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/skimming-across-lake.html This was taken last weekend. As you can see, a grey, hazy day. Pretty much no horizon. Just like today. It's been that way lately. I guess we have no right to complain, given the horrible, deadly weather south of the border. Oh well. Hope you enjoy this photo. PESO - Patience is a Virtue
Rule #1 in Nature Photography: Don't approach animals! This will only spook them and cause them to flee. Sit back patiently and let ~them~ approach ~you~. Have a smoke (repels mosquitoes) and enjoy the day. When you think a wee furry thing might be in the viewfinder, fire your remote and bingo: you're a nature photographer! http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2011/05/patience-is-virtue.html Hope you enjoy. GESO - Grebe Gallery
I wouldn't say these guys are shy, but they usually keep a bit of a distance. However last weekend they allowed me to get much closer than usual. Even with that, I cropped quite a bit (I'd say what you see is less than1/4 the original frame). Given the foregoing, I'm pleased with the sharpness I was able to get out of the Tokina 80-200 f2.8 (on a monopod). BTW, they aren't just grebes, they're Red Grebes: http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2011/05/grebe-gallery.html Hope you enjoy. Still, they ain't cormorants. I misnamed them. They're ~red-necked~ grebes. I see them quite often, actually, but usually they're out on the lake, forty or fifty yards out. When they're on the lake, you've got to be quick because they dive for fish and spend more time under water than above. When they're in one of the inlets (as they were here) they don't dive much and are almost always seen in pairs, often chattering to each other. They have floating nests near the shore - around here they're on artificial floats put there specifically for them, but last year several of them went unused. Certainly not as plentiful as other waterfowl, they're visible enough to not be uncommon. Lovely little things... I was unsure what to do about the shortstop. That's the edge of the frame, so there's no getting more of him in. I have other shots where other players (including baserunners) are nicely placed in the background, the the pitcher himself wasn't well captured at all. So this is the best of the captures of the young fellow throwing. I was thinking about cropping out the SS, but decided to keep him there. Too bad I didn't get all of him, as then it would be a no-brainer - his alert stance and facial expression are terrific. Obviously, you're in the crop out camp.
