Spring is sprung! Just the opposite here. Grass cutting season is over.
Have never seen a prickly pear with pink flowers - the local invaders

That's pretty much what I do, but I set to sRGB because the raw file
doesn't care, but I get one more letter for filename customization.
ProPhoto is the widest gamut available, sRGB is the smallest.

 See:

ProPhoto handles cyan much better. That being the opposite of red, reds
 benefit.
Of course, when we convert to sRGB, all that nice cyan information is gone
and the reds saturate and block up and all seem to be the same shade.
And that is why the red flower needed a little help for the web.

At least, that's what I understand how it works.

These are Eastern Prickly Pears, *Opuntia humifusa*. This species is
native to dry regions of the Northeast.

On our first trip to Hawaii, more than 40 years ago, I was astonished to
see prickly pears growing wild all over uncultivated dry areas of all the
islands. That was contrary to my preconception of Hawaii as a wet, lush,
tropical locale. I now know that there are a dozen or more distinct
climatic habitats on the islands depending on altitude and
location relative to the prevailing trade winds.

Thanks, Alan.

Yes, the fruit is edible, as are the pads, or nopales. I find eating it
gives me diarrhea, so I leave the fruits for the birds, which seem to enjoy
them. In survival school, back in the 1960s, we ate the pads as a source
of energy, along with wild onion and dandelions. I cut back the pads
severely after each flowering season; otherwise, they soon would cover the
entire yard.

Dan,

Lovely flowers well captured!
The spring, indeed brought many wonderful colors, - very inspiring!

The very first one, "Dogwood Buds" has the most unusual point of view (to
me), and hence the overall look.

It is different for different people, - but for my taste, in some cases, -
I would consider framing with just a bit more space around the "main
subject", - so that the flower (on inflorescence) is not filling up the
entire frame.
From taking photos of similar subjects, I know that it is often difficult

to do that while not crowding the image. It might still be worth trying.

Cheers,

Igor

I discovered a couple of weeks ago that I had posted very few of the photos I
took in Spain two years ago. It’s time for some catching up! Cordoba is a city
beautifully decorated with flowers. Here are some scenes:

2021-06-29 Thread ann sanfedele
I love 4 out of 5.. I'd drop the second one, too stark - no heart.
Isabel loses.
1 and 3 are enjoyable and ful of atmosphere but 4 and 5 are at the top
of my list..  but 4 is number 1 for me because it is so well composed.

The last one is fun, but I'm sure everyone that saw it  took that photo.

Re: GESO: spring flowers etc (6)

2021-05-10 Thread Stanley Halpin
Thanks Mike. My naming of the Fly was a wild guess based on the notion that
this is the month of May and the thing just started showing up.

As far as the mushroom is concerned, yes a bit distressed and could have used
better lighting. I bought it at our farmer’s market a week earlier so it had
dried out in the meantime. And I think it also was distressed because all of
the rest of its brethren had been chosen for the saute pan and a warm swim in
an omelet/scrambled egg dish. By the time I got to doing my planned macro shots
I was losing patience, Meg was trying to read the Sunday paper and didn’t want
me dimming the lights or closing the shades, I didn’t have another table to
relocate to, so I just did a couple of quick shots and resolved to go back to
the market this coming Saturday…

I did a a long series outside of the bee on the flower. Most are essentially
identical; there was a breeze and I was trying to anticipate quite moments. At
some point the bee changed positions and is more sideways to the camera, maybe
a better “portrait” of the bee but I liked this pose.

Thanks all for your comments..

GESO: Early Spring Flowers

2021-03-26 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Because of the deep and long-lasting snow, my flowers are behind schedule
this spring. In addition, so far the number and variety of those that have
appeared (especially the crocus) are disappointing.

The warm temperatures yesterday and today have produced some progress,
although my daffodils are quite far behind what I have seen in other areas
of town. So far, this is the best I could find:

Re: PESO x2: Another couple of spring flowers

2020-08-28 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Well captured!
I particularly like the Grape Hyacinth: the nice range of colors is well
contrasted by the background.

The color of Helleborus (at least this one) is not among my favorites
(it's close to what I call "dirty colors" [as opposed to "clear" colors]).
And I am not sure how it would look, but I would have tried to keep the
leaf uncropped and see if they look better that way.

Cheers,
Igor

Damn this lens is amazing.

I’d love to see what it could do with the comet.

So would I. It's been overcast here every evening for the last week and a
half.

I finally saw it & got some images on my 4th try:

1. Rained out
2. Very thin cloud cover & I was looking in the wrong place
3. Rained out again
4. Scattered overcast with thin, thin clouds in between, but I finally "got a
break".

I'm going to give it another try tonight. Chance of thunderstorms this afternoon
& evening, but there was not a cloud in the sky when I went out earlier to walk
the dog.

Heat index is high & I could definitely feel it. Good thing I won't have to
carry the tripod very far to set it up; about a thousand feet.
