Actually, I found it amusing. It's always fun to be the center of
attention:-)
The most fun I had with spectators while shooting a commercial was in
San Francisco at city hall. We converted city hall into an opera
house and shot overnight. (City Hall looks a lot more like an opera
house than the nearby opera house.) Some of the commercial took place
on the front steps. Hundreds of people in formal dress descended the
stairs as the performance ended and got into their limos, which, of
course, included numerous Lincoln Town Cars. Apparently some
activists heard about the shoot and turned out in full force. Some of
us wore headphones so we could hear the director on the large set, so
it looked like we were recording sound. We weren't. But when the
director saw the hundreds of protesters lined up across the street,
he didn't want to disappoint them. So before he gave his Roll film
command, he did an extra loud Roll Sound. That initiated a chant
from the protesters, who screamed at the top of their voices: Less
money for cars! More money for AIDS! Good times were had by all.

Just show up at the visitor center and hire a local with a jeep. That
appears to be the way it's done; they'll take you out as long as you
want and it seemed like a good deal to me. I went last year (again)
and spent 3 hrs. out there.

I'm not sure that you can hire your own car and then get a native
american to take you in; my impression was that you only used their
jeep. They know a lot of good spots for photos, but you'll need to
manage the time of day=lighting.

In something I read recently, no, you can drive the main part in a regular
car. It's a 17 mile circuit, but a passenger car can do it.

But to really see it, go off the beaten path for the best shots, yes, you
also need to go on one of the private tours. Tourists are not allowed to wander
off the main road without a guide.

That is based on a book for photographers, Photographing the Southwest,
Volume 2, by Laurent Martres.

Tom,
New AAA Tour Guide indicates that there is camping available in the
area.
We stayed at Goulding's Lodge where one of our party found a scorpion
hanging on the back of one of his window drapes.
We through off our bedding and did a search. Found nothing, but suspect
I took a little longer to go to sleep than I, otherwise, might have.
Don't know about the camping thing. Travel trailer/RV, maybe. :)
Been there twice. Very loosely run by a Navajo staff. BTW, taking their
picture is not recommended without asking. If asked, may cost you a
little. Others are superstitious; Steals their spirit...or...
Last time there was in early Nov.. Bitter, icy, stiff East wind caused
us to seek any shelter available. Stopped at Zion Canyon on way and
waited til Nov. to be allowed to drive the Canyon.

Re: OT Monument Valley Utah / Arizona need advice

2006-08-02 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello Tom,

When we went last year, I looked up all the tours available and
finally settled upon this one:
http://www.faroutexpeditions.com/

The big attractions to this one were the ability to have the trip
custom tailored to our desires and the AIR CONDITIONED 4wd van. Also
the knowledge and personal service of our guide, Vaughn, was
exceptional.

So I arranged with Vaughn's wife to have an afternoon/evening tour,
instead of the regular tour he does. We switched the lunch at a hogan
to a dinner that they provided for us.

We stayed overnight in Bluff, UT (multiple choices) which is where the
tour heads out from. On the way down, Vaughn gave us some background
on the area and told us quite a bit about the terrain besides Monument
Valley. He leads many expeditions for photographers seeking out
indian ruins and such outside of MV.

We left just after lunch and he took us in to MV and took the
back roads tour. But, he allowed us to stop anywhere and stay for as
long as we liked. He told us all about the things we saw and was
great company. A little later towards evening, he took us to the
picnic area and laid out a wonderful dinner spread. It was so cool to
eat in the middle of MV and have such a nice dinner.

Then we drove all over trying to decide where to catch the sunset. We
must have gone about 5 or 6 places before we settled on a spot. After
sunset he drove us back to Bluff and we spent the night in one of the
local motels.

All told, we spent about 9 hours with him. It was well worth the
trip. Everyone in our group was more than thrilled with the
experience and the hospitality. If I were to go again, I would book
this one for sure.

HTH,

Bruce

Re: OT Monument Valley Utah / Arizona need advice

Subject: OT Monument Valley Utah / Arizona need advice

I'm putting a tour together and Monument Valley is one of the places
we want to visit. I understand that we'll need to rent a 4 WD vehicle
 and hire a tour guide?

Does anyone have any advice they'd care to pass along?

We'd like to camp in Monument Valley if possible. Are there any
 campgrounds with showers?

thanks for any help you can offer.

Things may have changed since I was last there..
Primitive camping was available right in the valley, but had virtually
no amenities. Limited water and pit poilets was about it.
As others have mentioned, better camping is available close by.
There is an access road in the valley that is passable by regular
vehicles. If you want to go off the beaten path, you have to hire a
guide.
The valley is effectively on private land, BTW, and the Navaho are
pretty particular people when it comes to their sacred places. Monumant
Valley is one of those places.
If you want another nice place to visit in the region, consider
Kodachrome Basin.

I shot a Buick commercial on 163. Of course it was a bit intrusive
with half a dozen trucks and a crew of 30. We were up toward the top
of the road looking back toward MV. It was about this cowboy who was
driving his Roadmaster back to New Jersey to visit his mama (no
kidding). Anyway, people who drove buy screamed things at us like,
Get the F out of the road. Shove that big pig of a Buick up your A.
And things like that. Lots of fun. But no one likes a big film crew
in the middle of their vacation.

Don't recall who took it, but the highway was set in black and
 appeared
as a silver ribbon extending from the camera to the far off monuments.
When there, I kind of hope for a short rain late in the day, so I
 could
 steal the idea.

Hi Jack, I had not read your post when I wrote mine - I'm a

I was also going to suggest that heading up 163 toward
Mexican hat there are spectacular views of
the valley and other things like the Rapley anticline that
 are great photo fodder.

 If I
remember, it cost us (3) $40 ea. Sunrise is prior to daily opening
 time.
We had been in the previous pm and knew exactly where we wanted to
 be,
but we were not given a choice.
 I had a 4-WD, but many didn't and at that time,('prox 3 yes ago)
 the
 road/trail didn't require it.
There is a day use picnic area I saw, but don't believe there is a
camping place there. I'm putting up a shot taken from the picnic
 area.

Recommend close by Goulding's Lodge, 2 mi. off US 163 and
 Goulding's
Jct. All services and a bit of history.
The lodge is perched on a side bluff which affords a nice area
 view. It
overlooks a small airport where, at least at one time, provided
 light
fixed wing aircraft flights over the Valley.
I have no financial interest in Goulding's, but am furnishing their
'phone no. in case: (435) 727-3231.
