And by Googling I don't necessarily mean by using Google - other search engines are available. -Stuart -- http://stut.net/

Re: [PHP] whoami explanation
This really needs some explanation I found this on the web: with it there was the comment "the direction of those single-quotes matters" (WHY ?) and it works But this (_*FROM THE PHP MANUAL***_ * - exec()* executes the given /command/ ) does not, COPIED AND PASTED: | | What is going on here? And I often find such discrepancies in examples - and some wonder why I seem to be so stupid... and don't know the fundamentals... :-\ Didn't have the time to read the whole thread. Sorry for being so lame. I will have to mention that whoami is actually "id -un" and probably if you need to get user information from the shell IMHO you should better use the id command or a better solution could be the posix_getuid() function. If you need to find the owner of the current script you could use something like get_current_user(). Current proccess id from the shell: "; echo `id`; echo "Current proccess id from the posix getuid: "; echo posix_getuid(); ?> btw I think it would be nice to have a function that can give you the user that actually runs the script (apache ,www) instead of using the command line. The posix functions AFAIK can give you only the ids (uid, gid etc) about a process. -- Thodoris -- PHP General Mailing List (http://www.php.net/) To unsubscribe, visit: http://www.php.net/unsub.php

Yeah, that's true. In the original message I noted locale and other preference settings, but I did fail to mention it again here. The other option is that I'm wrong, but as we all know, that is such a rare occurrence that it may as well be a nonexistent option. Cracking response Dan, and I agree fully with most of it. A while back I was a far more active contributor to the PHP lists than I am now (promotion == more responsibility == less spare time) and the reason I do it is because it never seems like work - it's fun!! But I feel I must correct you on one point... 2009/3/4 Daniel Brown >Thirdly: > > Perhaps one should check as to what the input to Google was - >> to compare and find why there might be a discrepancy. The results returned by Google are not constant. They vary based on your location, which domain you're using, which index instance you hit and a number of other things, most of which are not public. It is more than possible that PJ did get different results to you from the same search term. Hell, I get different results on my machine than the guy the other side of the office. If you made a typo, big deal --- it happens. If someone chooses to "pick on it," then go have a nice cry and come back fresh. If you expect to receive *only* high-quality answers and will criticize those who give you answers that are "flawed and where glitches were not caught," then I highly suggest that you continue to "resolve problems by trying various alternatives," because I can speak very loudly for the community and say that you would never be welcome here with an attitude like that, unless your words haven't properly captured what you're trying to convey. I guess I just don't like to be thought of as some bimbo. In defense of my non-bimbo-ism, I have may accomplishments to my credit that are not shouted all over as I don't give 2 blivits for fame and all that but they include having things at MOMA in NY, web sites (not programming) that blew away Harvard gurus, use of FedEx in ways that FedEx never dreamed of and still doesn't know what it missed, a movie script (based on an actual incredible event) that was not produced because the French gov't stopped because the truth could not be told, TV food shows that were at least 10 years ahead of their time (techniques that only began to be used (or copied about a year ago), etc. etc. so, there... :-P And now for the cherry on top of the cake Much as I like Obama and what he is doing (I'm not sure he knows what he is *really* doing) I am absolutely positive that he is going to fail. The reason is simple he and his counselors are trying to resuscitate a system that is dead; it cannot be saved without changing the entire system and that means going the way of "socialism" - nationnalizing the banks, the auto industry, especially the oil industry; revamping the education system so people who know can teach and not people who "know" how to teach; and a complete health care system either like what was originally the Quebec way or something alike the Swedish system. And it won't work because of what was said by the late and last of the great world leaders François Mitterand: (paraphrasing) We don't learn from history. All the answers are there but we refuse to see the obvious. The old way of doing things has to change and change radically. Nabobs and incompetent greedy CEOs cannot be rewarded for their stupidity and greed and corporations cannot operate at the incredibly low efficiency rate of their employees. The boy's club is dead. Single quotes don't interpolate (expand) variables within them. They are for string literals. Only escaping recognized is \\ to include a backslash and \' to include a single quote. Double quotes recognize all sorts of escape chars such as \n for newline, \r for carriage return, \t for tab, etc, etc. Additionally they expand embedded variables to their value. Backtick key can usually be found to the left of the 1 key and unders the escape key. Those are called "backtick operators." Like in BASh and most other *NIX shells, that instructs the parser to evaluate, execute, and return the result of the command within the ticks. > But this (_*FROM THE PHP MANUAL***_ * - exec()* executes the given > /command/ ) does not, > COPIED AND PASTED: > | // outputs the username that owns the running php/httpd process > // (on a system with the "whoami" executable in the path) > echo exec('whoami'); > ?> | > What is going on here? What you want to do with exec() is run it properly (RTFM for real ;-P). The second parameter passed to exec() is the return array from STDOUT, the third is the error response on channel 2 (STDERR). > And I often find such discrepancies in examples - and some wonder why I > seem to be so stupid... and don't know the fundamentals... :-\ I highly doubt that you're stupid you just need to pay closer attention to what the manual is actually saying. Check the user notes as well, and then devise your own pattern from the collective examples --- it'll jump-start your learning. -- daniel.br...@parasane.net || danbr...@php.net http://www.parasane.net/ || http://www.pilotpig.net/ 50% Off All Shared Hosting Plans at PilotPig: Use Coupon DOW1 -- PHP General Mailing List (http://www.php.net/) To unsubscribe, visit: http://www.php.net/unsub.php

They execute a program via the shell. If you drop to the shell and type whoami at the prompt you will get the same result. The backticks operator returns the shell's output which is why it can be echoed.
