Bug#764860: ITP: otb -- ORFEO Toolbox

2014-10-11 Thread Andreas Tille
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Andreas Tille ti...@debian.org

* Package name: otb
  Version : 4.2.1
Upstream Author : OTB Team cont...@orfeo-toolbox.org
* URL : http://sourceforge.net/projects/orfeo-toolbox/files/OTB/
* License : CeCILL
  Programming Lang: C++
  Description : ORFEO Toolbox
ORFEO Toolbox (OTB) is distributed as an open source library of image
processing algorithms. OTB is based on the medical image processing library
ITK and offers particular functionalities for remote sensing image processing
in general and for high spatial resolution images in particular.

This package was derived from some PPA version and polished in
cooperation with upstream. It will be maintained by the Debian GIS
team at
   git://anonscm.debian.org/pkg-grass/otb.git

Just running it myself I wonder if you are using the copies of
  libraries (eg boost, zlib, ...)

FYI: I added a ticket upstream, where I think the issue is best solved
 http://bugs.orfeo-toolbox.org/view.php?id=981

While this is probably correct, it is only half of the problem.
Ftpmaster found *several other* files with licenses / copyright which
are not mentioned in debian/copyright. This needs to be fixed before we
could upload again. The code copies would be acceptable to some extend
if there would be no way around - if and only if their copyright would
be properly specified.

So somebody needs to go down the list which can be obtained by
licensecheck -r *

Hope this helps

  Andreas.

2014-10-23 Thread Andreas Tille
Hi Paolo,

can you please confirm that you understood that it is a packaging
problem to simply list all the license in the debian/copyright file?
Ftpmaster was not saying that the licenses are wrong - they are just
not specified in d/copyright.

Kind regards

Andreas.

Just running it myself I wonder if you are using the copies of

FYI: I added a ticket upstream, where I think the issue is best solved

While this is probably correct, it is only half of the problem.
Ftpmaster found *several other* files with licenses / copyright which
are not mentioned in debian/copyright. This needs to be fixed before we
could upload again. The code copies would be acceptable to some extend
if there would be no way around - if and only if their copyright would
 be properly specified.

So somebody needs to go down the list which can be obtained by
 licensecheck -r *

 Hope this helps

This seems to be caused by gdal 1.11.1 in experimental not having been
 rebuilt for the jpeg-turbo transition.

Seems this transition creates some trouble (and by chance I had a talk
to the libjpeg developer last weekend who thinks it is a really
unfortunate move - but that's another topic).

I've just filed a binnmu bug to have it rebuilt (#766694).

As usual ping me once I should retry the build (even if stuff in
experimental should not be that urgent).

[DebianGIS-dev] Patches for debian-gis meta packages

2007-10-20 Thread Andreas Tille
Hi,

I have patched debian-gis package source to let it work with cdd-dev
nicely. It required some changes to cdd-dev which are in version
0.4.4 which will be uploaded today (so find it tomorrow in sid or grab
it from svn).

The attached diff contains the suggested changes. Feel free to ask
in case of any question.

Kind regards

Andreas.

CDD tasks pages. I want you to hunt for bugs in these pages for about
one week before I replace the old pages by the new ones. My plan is
to run a cron job[1] twice a day to regenerate all CDD pages. (The
old cron jobs for Debian Med and Debian Science should be taken out
operation, for Debian Med I will do this by just inserting an exit 0
in the current script because the owner of the job David Paleino
announced to be off line for a while.)

Features:
   - (Hopefully) reimplemented all features of the old system
   - Fully translated modulo missing DDTP translations (and
there are A LOT untranslated descriptions - this is YOUR
job in case you have some spare time! ... Just visit the
DDTP page[2] and see how you could enhance the situation!)
   - Better navigation from one task to the others by adding a
 menu in the left column
   - Fully translatable for all CDDs (no remaining references
 to Debian Med)
   - Easily adaptable for new CDDs by just adding a config file
   - Index page shows (translated, if there are DDTP translations)
descriptions of the tasks instead of a plain list.
   - Pages are not PHP but static HTML, language preference settings
are detected via Options +MultiViews in a .htaccess file
(which is auto generated according the languages that are
available); List of available languages at the bottom.
Question: Do you think it makes sense to generate different
sets of languages for different CDDs. I'd regard
this as possibly interesting but not high on top
of the todo list. Implementation is easy.
   - Probabably some more new features
   - Probably some new bugs

Please have a look at the pages of your pet-CDD:

   Debian Edu:
 http://cdd.alioth.debian.org/edu/tasks_new/

   Debian GIS:
 http://cdd.alioth.debian.org/gis/tasks_new/

   Debian Junior:

   Debian Med:
 http://debian-med.alioth.debian.org/tasks_new/

   Debian Science:

Start working on DDTP decriptions of packages _NOW_!

Kind regards

 Andreas.

[DebianGIS-dev] Announcement: New bugs pages, status of renaming

2008-11-07 Thread Andreas Tille
 serious bug in a dependent package: 1*10*3 = 30
 2 imoprtant bugs in a dependent package: 2* 5*3 = 30
 1 normal   ||  1* 3*3 =  9
 1 minor||  1* 1*3 =  3
___
 weighted sum = 72

On the index page

   http://cdd.alioth.debian.org/science/bugs

you have a legend about the evaluation parameters: 72 50 (for pass)
which makes the coloring red for this package. Fixing the serious bug
would make the weighted sum 42 which would bring the metapackage in the
next better category satisfactory ( 50).

In other words: A metapackage can not be in status good if there is
at least serious (or higher) bug in a dependant package. It also can
not be very good if there is a RC bug in a suggested package - but
two RC bugs in suggested packages might qualify for good - if there
are only a very view other bugs which sounds quite improbable. Only
one normal bug in a dependent package and no important bug in a
suggested package do qualify for excellent - so this is really
hard to reach.

These numbers might be discussed and we even might consider making
them configurable per CDD in the according webconf file. This is
just a quick shot. For the moment I think it works somehow.

Todo for you

1. Please comment on these pages. Comments with patches for

svn://svn.debian.org/cdd/cdd/trunk/blends/webtools

are even more welcome. There is no need to throw out a lot of
good ideas if there is the chance to turn them into code and
check it in. These pages are not my private pet it is our common
work which just was started by me.

2. Maintain your index page yourself.
David Paleino has created a really nice index page for Debian Med

http://debian-med.alioth.debian.org/

Actually all the design was adopted from him and many ideas from
his former tasks and bugs pages are implemented. The other index
pages are at

 http://cdd.alioth.debian.org/blend-name

and can be changed at

 alioth: /var/lib/gforge/chroot/home/groups/cdd/htdocs/blend-name

No, *I* will *NOT* work on this index page for your blend. I
consider the effort you spend in this page as a measure how much
your Blend is interested in the web tools provided by the
blends effort. If you think linking from a Wiki does the work
as well this is fine for me. But please care for making the
pages popular in your Blend. It is fine for me to provide the
technique, but I will not take over thr grunt work of documentation
for every single blend.

3. Design
As I mentioned above the basic design is from David. If you want
to enhance the page layout, colors, whatever, just have a look at

  svn://svn.debian.org/cdd/cdd/trunk/blends/webtools/{inc,templates}

And now for somethinc completely different ...

Status of renaming CDD - Blend
---

When I go for a public announcement of the renaming I wanted to stress
the message: We are not people who are busy finding new names for some
stuff but we care for techniques and promotion of our project. That's
why the announcement of the bug pages comes first - and I hope you agree
that this is the important stuff we are doing.

But for attracting outsiders it is just needed to not confuse from
the beginning and transport a wrong message with a wrong name. The
fact that the old name Custom Debian Distributions just leaded to the
implication that this is something else than Debian finally leaded
to a renaming discussion which reached a raw consensus for the
suggestion

 Debian Pure Blends

In the code inside Debian we use 'blend' for factorised code that
concerns a single Blend (given as an option or something like that
and 'blends' if it is working for all Blends in one context. The
Debian and Pure is evidend inside Debian internal code like packages
blends-dev (formerly cdd-dev) or blends-common (formerly cdd-common)
etc. Configuration for blends will go into /etc/blends (formerly
/etc/cdd. The term Blend is just easier to pronounce and makes
more sense than DPB or something like that.

Technically the renaming is not yet completely finished. The
web tools are renamed and a lot of the blend source package
(formerly cdd source package) but not everything and most imoprtantly
not the documentation part. I hope to finish this until Sunday
but I'll be offline from Friday evening to Sunday evening - so
the official announcment on debian-devel-announce will not
happen before Sunday evening.

[DebianGIS-dev] Changes in Debian GIS Blend stuff

2010-04-11 Thread Andreas Tille
Hi,

yesterday I worked on the Debian GIS Blends stuff because I was bored by
the single task layout to move every GIS related application into one
single task gis-workstation. When I was read with the restructuring I
realised that I do not have any commit permission to pkg-grass SVN
(formerly we used svn:external property in Blends SVN to point to this
location, but commiting does not work that path). Because I was in a
hurry to get the new tasks rendered on the web page I decided to cut
this rope and move everything directly to

svn://svn.debian.org/blends/projects/gis

Please do NOT consider this as a rude tackover but just a workaround to
enable me doing a presentation here at DudesConf 3 in A Coruña. I would
completely agree to move the stuff back if you would like to maintain
the files in pkg-grass - I was just afraid that things might be delayed
more than possible until I get commit permissions. Just tell me what
you think is the best solution. The poplicy for the Blends SVN is:
Every DD has commit permissions - so feel free to work there or ask me
for commit permissions if you are no DD.

Now to the actual changes (just see [1] for the realisation). First I
need to say: I'm no GIS expert at all - just got a new GPS device at
christmas and started with some OSM mapping. So it sounded reasonably
to me to have a task gis-gps to handle any GPS data and hardware.
Moreover I introduced a gis-osm task featuring all OSM related packages.
There might be a reason to have also a gis-osm-server task because not
all the packages seem to be relevant for simple mappers.

I made good experiences with a development task in other blends and so
there is a gis-devel task featuring alls the libGIS-RELATED-dev
packages.

I moved all R related packages from gis-workstation to gis-statistics -
I'm definitely sure that there are more GIS relevant R packages in
Debian currently. Please add more (in case you consider the
gis-statistics task reasonable).

I also invented a gis-tools task where I tried to move all smaller tools
from gis-workstation which might be useful for people doing GIS work
without using the large killer apps like GRASS. This choice of mine is
surely questionable - just take it as suggestion and feel free to change
it back or draw it into another direction.

The last split up from gis-workstation is gis-web where I tried to
assemble all packages which provide some addition to webservers. As
above I have no idea whether this choice makes really sense - just
feel free to enhance my first scratch work.

You can change all the tasks by checking out

   svn://svn.debian.org/blends/projects/gis/trunk/tasks

and edit the files there. The principle is simple - if you need further
documentation you can find it in the Paper about Blends[2]. You are
always invited to join the Blends mailing list[3].

Kind regards

  Andreas.

sorry, I missed the earlier email.

Probably not only you. I noticed that Petter was updating the
tasks/workstation file 8 days ago. Petter, do you see any reasonable
was to coordinate. As I wrote: I do not really wanted to highjack
and I'm fine with maintaining the tasks files inside pkg-grass.
So if you think this is the best solution I even might subscribe
pkg-grass - perhaps granting commit permissions fo any DD would
be easier (we have this for Debian Med and Blends, you can ask
Alioth admins for this).

the blends pages look nice, thanks for setting it up. I had not
really heard of it much before now. If I may ask, how is this
different than the old -tasks metapackages beyond now with extra
 bling?

It is NOT different from the metapackages approach. I just suggested
some more fine grained metapackages. IMHO a gis-workstation is a bit
to general.

why can we expect them to be any more successful?

Because they are more up to date? Because they specifically address
people like OSM mappers which are quite active but do not necessarily
want to install all the other packages - so they do not really feel
at home with Debian GIS?

(I'll admit to still thinking about them as they were back in
 the dselect days)

The existence of reasonably shaped metapackages is practical whatever
tool you are using for installation. So I do not understand your hint
to dselect.

The good news is that obviosely nobody is against my action
and so I consider the move of the GIS Blends stuff to
    svn://svn.debian.org/blends/projects/gis
  as accepted.

Add whatever new work you like- please do not slow down, but
kindly do not assume so much about other people's work and
interest after a single unanswered email!
  :)

The problem is if mails like this are unanswered I would conclude that
there is no general interest in this work and I will not get much
support in this. This would mean I'm entertaining the GIS tasks on
my own which I really do not want to do because I'm not a GIS expert.

IMHO it would be a good idea to remove the old stuff from
pkg-grass SVN and possibly set a svn:external property for
those who might wonder what happened.

Do not do remove it, just add a README.Blends file or so pointing
to and explaining your Blends efforts.

I hope this mail will help me finding a reasonable way to get commit
permissions. I'd prefer DD writable SVN.

Currently a number of the DebianGIS team are upstream maintainers
helping out and not DDs, with access to the svn via $username-
guest and alioth gforge group. I take it they(we) will be locked
out if the -task is moved to the blends svn area?

I was talking just about the tasks files which currently seem to be
maintained only by Petter - so there is no real lock out. But as I
said: The tasks files need more love and if you are sure they should
stay in pkg-grass SVN I might adapt somehow.

Currently the mainly maintained thing is the package list in the
 DebianGis wiki.

Well, IMHO the most comparable thing with the tasks web pages is

   http://pkg-grass.alioth.debian.org/debiangis-status.html

If there is somebody keen on a feature of this page I'd volunteer
to reimplemnt this feature in the tasks scope. If only somebody
would talk to mee about this ...

Kind regards

 Andreas.

Re: [DebianGIS-dev] Ping: Changes in Debian GIS Blend stuff

 I assume s/was/way/.

Yes. :-)

Note, that as far as I know, the tasks/workstation file is part of the
draft debian-gis meta package I wrote several years ago, and which
have been largely untouched since then.

I have observed this fact (that the tasks file is untouched) for a long
time and I finally decided to give it some push for the reasons I layed
out in my previous mails.

I stumbled across the live CD
build part of the meta package a few days ago, did a test build and
fixed some minor issues to get the live CD building, announced the new
live CD and got tips about an alternative live CD and put some of the
packages in the package list from that live CD into the debian-gis
package. All of this was a stunt triggered by me finding the old live
CD build directory, and is unlikely to result in any regular work on
 my part.

... and it seems also not by anybody else ...

I created the meta package to show what direction we could take the
Debian GIS project in, but never had time to follow up on it and
no-one else seemed to trigger on the idea of providing a meta package
 for GIS tools.

I'm personally much in favour of the metapackages approach via tasks
files since it enables us to generate the web pages I continuosely try
to advertise. I have the (biased) impression that since I do so the
attraction of the project in question is growing. This is specifically
true in Debian Science and Debian Med (but has not stopped Debian Jr
dying or helped Debian Lex starting). I'm positively convinced that we
have quite good project groups but these groups fail to advertise their
work to the world and hope that some users or developers might stumble
upon the project by chance. IMHO the effort of maintenance to effect
of advertising ratio of using the tasks files is quite good and besides
this they turned out a really good QA tool (and I wished they would be
used much more as such - see my last rant on Debian Edu).

I am regularly busy with other projects, and am unlikely to be able to
spend serious time on the gis tools because of this. This make me
want others to decide how the meta package should be maintained in the
future. Is it wanted? Useful? Worth the effort? I do not know, but
others need to answer yes to these for the package to move forward.

I would really like to *support* the work on this stuff, but as I said
I'm lacking some general overview over GIS packages. From the
experience in other Blends I'm perfectly convinced that you need to
widen your view from single package maintenance to try to form a
complete system which covers certain workfields. The example of Debian
Med shows (in a field which is probably much worse covered with FLOSS
than GIS): We now have about at least five more DDs because Debian Med
exists, Debian is reaching for the distribution of choice if it comes to
the use of Free Software in medicine and we have a very good cooperation
to several upstream developers. I don't know how things work in Debian
GIS and my way to (wild) guess how a team works is to look at the
mailing list activity graphs, which are available for Debian GIS
here[1].

This shows what you probably know that Francesco is a very active
developer over all the time and he definitely is the backbone of Debian
GIS. He has got some supporters which changed over time but with
perhaps the exception of David (hey David, you just *know* the stuff I'm
talking about! ;-)) in the last two years none of them increased their
activity. The general activity on the general discussion list is
decreasing - even if I think the topic GIS becomes more and more
interesting. So I do not see a solidly formed team and the
run-over-by-bus factor is close to 1.

As I wrote: I do not really wanted to highjack and I'm fine with
maintaining the tasks files inside pkg-grass. So if you think this
is the best solution I even might subscribe pkg-grass - perhaps
granting commit permissions fo any DD would be easier (we have this

I suspect giving you write access to the pkg-grass alioth project is a
good way to grant you access while still being able to give non-Debian
 Developers access to the source.

I applied for becoming a member of pkg-grass ... even if I have no
interest in packaging GRASS. You understood the second part of the
sentence? Always if I want to contact Debian GIS people I wonder
whether there are only these GRASS packagers hanging around. Yes, I can
read the description of the mailing list and I know that this is not the
case, but I'm afraid that there are other people out there which are
afraid about posting here if you are focussing that exclusively on
GRASS.

Hi,

I would like to inform you that ftpmaster has accepted the Debian GIS
metapackages. I will care for pushing this information to the Squeeze

Moreover I discussed with David Paleino about Mailing list naming. I
learned that I'm not the only one who was confused by the name of a
specific package (GRASS) in a more general scope mailing list. To fix
this I would like to propose the following change:

   1. Move the general discussion about GIS to a to be created
mailing list about all GIS issues in Debian. If you agree
I will ask listmaster for registering
debian-...@lists.debian.org
   2. Keep those mails which are concerning the *package* *development*
of packages like GRASS, Qgis etc in pkg-grass-devel and use
pkg-osm-maint for OSM and GPS devices related stuff

Please tell me what you think about this plan to make Debian GIS more
visible inside Debian.

I'm not the right person to judge how much work switching that list is
(eg all packages refer to the list), but I would also move towards
debian-gis-devel. It is more consistent, and if the debian-gis list is
created, we have the 'momentum' to change it, otherwise it will not
 happen.

I admit this would also be my preference but I was hesitant to fight
historically grown habits. On the other hand to do things right we
should register an Alioth project Debian GIS and create the mailing list
there (I would prefer developer oriented list on Alioth and the general
discussion list on l.d.o - this has turned out to be useful for other
projects as well). In Debian Med and Debian Science there is a list
for collaborative maintainership of medical/science related packages
(debian-med-packag...@l.a.d.o / debian-science-maintain...@l.a.d.o) and
also a list for the commits (debian-{med|science}-comm...@l.a.d.o .
I would consider it a good idea to go with this scheme.

The problem is that we have to fight an historical split (pkg-grass and
pkg-osm, where the later is probably solvable) and this will take some
time of migration and I wonder if there is some common will to push this
change. If you ask me it is perfectly reasonable to do, but it is very
hard if it is not supported by the whole group.

Anyway, don't ask my opinion, but perhaps frankie can judge if

 it is doable?

I'm actually a bit concerned that frankie stays silent to all mails in
this discussion ...
When we talked three years ago at Debconf 7 in Edinburgh (the last time
I met Frankie) he was in principle in favour of the Blends idea. Some
confirmation or doubts would be helpful to proceed here.

Please tell me what you think about this plan to make Debian GIS more

[DebianGIS-dev] Bug#588812: lists.debian.org: Please create Debian GIS mailing list

2010-07-12 Thread Andreas Tille
Package: lists.debian.org
Severity: wishlist

Hi listmasters,

after some discussion on the pkg-grass mailing lists[1] which are currently
used to do general discussions and not only issues about packaging GRASS
we came up with the conclusion that it is better to have a dedicated
mailing list for Debian GIS. The fact that metapackages of a Debian GIS
Blend were just accepted by ftpmaster lets us think there now is a good
moment to do so.

Here is some description of the scope:

The goal of the Debian GIS project is improving Debian to make it the
best distribution for professional Geographical Information Systems,
support of GPS devices and providing various OpenStreetMap tools to make
Debian the distribution of choice for mappers.

  Home: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianGis

Kind regards and thanks for maintaining lists.debian.org

  Andreas.

I hope that listmasters will agree that this is not the case any more.

That said, I would also note that
current -general list is closed to subscribers, while debian-gis
would be open to the world (as generally done for all listmasters lists),
with obvious consequence for subscribers about spamming...

The pros and cons are heavily discussed in the past and I do not think
it makes sense to repeat this discussion. I personally get about one or
two mails per month from each mailinlist @l.d.o thanks to the
spamfilters the listmasters applied (thanks to the effort of
listmasters!) and local SPAM filters. That's IMHO acceptable.

I take your mail as somethink like it is fine for me to create the list
if you care for it and thus I hope the mailing list can be created soon.

Question to listmasters: Is it possible to take over the content of the
list archive of pkg-grass-general to debian-gis archive? I guess the
different listservers might make this hard and I do not really want to
put this on you. But if there would be a reasonable way to do this it

Its no problem to import old mails if the come in a common format like mbox.

If you really want this list get some seconders and complete the request as
 listed in: http://www.debian.org/MailingLists/HOWTO_start_list.

It has become quite silent about this issue and I can understand
listmaster to ask for seconders. So what do you think about my
suggestions to make Debian GIS more popular than it currently is? I
think it is a shame that Debian GIS is quite unknown to potentially
interested persons and please trust me: I asked a lot of people when I
did talks about Blends and mentioned Debian GIS as a potential Blend -
there was nobody aware of this project whereever I asked. And there
where people around which are working with GIS software. I also
continue to think that we should try to involve OSM into the Debian
GIS project.

This all makes IMHO a lot of sense to discuss on a mailing list and
especially if we are in the process of a release mentioning such a
mailing list in the release notes would give the project a lot of
attention and probably new supporters.

Kind regards

(by 'home' I take it you mean @lists.d.o instead of @alioth.d.o server?)

Yes. That's exactly the whole point of the arguing. I would not make
such a fuzz about just a list renaming on alioth and the bug report I
was refering to is exactly about this.

but turns into a medium where we actively can attract users (and later
  developers) better than before.

among those who frequent the lists of debian lists, yes, and that is not
a bad crowd to be exposed to.

Exposal to people - that's actually the keyword ...

So what to say? My first point is that she did not understand the
Do-O-cracy principle in Debian. Not Debian has decided but one (or
more) developers just have done something (packaging Qgis).

my first impressions on that comment are
 - ...
 - I'd forgive the debian executive has made a decision to package qgis
as it is quite a strange notion to outsiders who are used to corporations
 or top-down NGOs.

I can forgive this as well for sure. My point was: We need a visible
channel to educate people about the difference in Debian and who they
can become part of the movement. It happens 3-4 times a year on Debian
Med list that we are able to turn people with similar imagination about
Debian into members of the packaging team (currently there is also a
thread active where I try to patiently explain about proper packaging of
OpenMRS (hospital management system) to a very engaged Debian newbee who
is closely connected to upstream. This guy is learning quite quickly
and we have contact *because* there is a visible list.

backport or not). So she simply failed to get the information
  she was seeking.

and yet she did hear of it from somewhere anyway..?

But only the rumor - not a way to apt-get install ...

there is one, two actually if you include UbuntuGIS, and three if you
include the qgis list(s), and many more if you include the local osgeo
 chapters and international osgeo lists.

I fully agree that lowering the barriers to entry are important.

That's the point. We should not trust other parties like Ubuntu or
different upstream. IMHO it is our obligation to run such a list (and
for sure we should cooperate with the others).

 http://blends.debian.net/liststats/authorstat_pkg-grass-general.png

grain of salt: you must put that graph in perspective with the rise
of the OSGeo movement, which often informally communicates things which
would otherwise find a home here. Or maybe Frankie is just so damn
efficient and everything works that we don't get many complaints :o)
aka determining causation is a difficult call.

Sure. Such graphs do not really tell a whole story. There are often
more than just one simple explanations and BTW, I'm confident that
Frankie is really efficient. However, please mind the run-over-by-bus
effect. And it actually does not need an accident to lose developers.
If you remember that developers become parents and need to care for
children more then for Debian a one man driven team might be in danger
to become ineffective.

I congratulate you on that, by any measure of success that is a healthy
 situation to be in.

but does FOSS 4 Med have an equivalent to OSGeo already filling that niche?

I admit I do not know OSGeo enough to be able to do a real comparison.
I can confirm that there are FOSS 4 Med related lists where I was
subscribed in former times. I learned that there is a lot of *really*
interesting *discussion* but just discussion without *implementation*
finally does not help. The good thing in Debian is that we just have an
*implementation ready to run* the things we are discussing about and
IMHO this is a major point.

The tendency on the pkg-grass-general list is rather contrary. I do not
want to say that it is just a question of the name of the list. But I
know for sure from the example above (and others not mentioned here) that
a pure packaging list on Alioth is not a good entry point to start.

Perhaps that's where our miscommunication lies, I've still been thinking
of it as mostly a packaging dev list, as opposed to say an osgeo-disc...@.
(not that I have any strong feeling of what it should be, just observation
 on what it has been)

For me as a GIS outsider who just started to dive into GIS issues
(mostly via OSM but perhaps I might have other applications from my job
- think of epidemiology issues) this is really the point. The fact that
we are continuosely CCing both pkg-grass lists (because the difference
is not really clear) and the discussion on pkg-grass-general which is
also quite packaging centric is something which did not really attracted
me and the suggestion is not only a rename (and move) but also shifting
the focus a bit more

avoid to loose time to manage the two lists :)

About the history, as explained on the wiki:

An existing mailing list can be moved to lists.debian.org: the
administrator of the list has to submit a request as described above and
provide us with a list of subscribers (in plain text format, one address
per line). Archives of the existing list can also be imported from files
in mbox format (preferably split per month).

So I *think* the past history could be moved from alioth to lists.d.o.
I can surely provide a subscribers list too.

The discussion was somehow extended by the suggestion to solve the
confusion about the naming of the developer oriented list. I agree with
this suggestion but it is a separate issue (even if it has the same goal
in mind). If I remember right the suggestion was also not to move the
developer list from alioth to l.d.o. Usually you find the developer
oriented lists at alioth and I do not see any reason for changing this.
I would welcome if we would not spoil the original discussion with this
issue because it obviosely has created more confusion than needed.

Kind regards

   Andreas.

Yes, you are perfectly right. The content of -general should be moved

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The upload would fix these bugs: 606877

My motivation for maintaining this package is:
I would like to maintain packages for the specialized SW related to SAR
processing and Earth Observation that I currently use for job.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

In principle I could sponsor the package however I think you should
follow the advise given at

   http://wiki.debian.org/DebianGis/InfoForDevelopers#Maintainership

and use the Debian GIS developers list as maintainer and put yourself as
Uploader. I'm not sure about Debian GIS upload policy but in Debian Med
we usually use

   DM-Upload-Allowed: yes

to enable DMs uploading packages. (If you seriousely consider working on
these packages long term which is what I understand from your mails you
should definitely apply for becomming a DM / DD.)

Moreover I would like you to inject your packaging into Debian GIS SVN
and set Vcs fields accordingly.

BTW, lintian reveals some Information messages if started in nitpicking
mode:

   lintian -i -I *.deb *.dsc

Perhaps you might consider fixing these as well.

Kind regards and thanks for working on these packages

 Andreas.

In case you want me to sponsor the package it is fine if you tell me the
VCS location. However, I'm not very knowledged in this field and can
only veryfy the pure packaging stuff. So if there some more educated
member of the Debian GIS team would step in this would probably a good
idea. If nobody might step up I can check and upload the package in
case you state explicitely that it is ready for an upload (in your
mail above you said only that you modified it - that's no clear advise
for me ;-) ).

For the re-upload question: I'd consider it important that if there are
two locations of some software which is featuring the same version
number they should be identical. So either you remove the package from
mentors and maintain it only in Vcs or you should sync it with mentors.
Otherwise there are chances that somewone graps the old stuff from
mentors.d.n without notifying that it is outdated.

Seems spatialite-tools needs to be removed from testing

2013-01-10 Thread Andreas Tille
Hi,

I tried to do some RC bug hunting and stumbled upon #661018. While the
problem was

   Fixed in versions spatialite-tools/3.1.0b-1, spatialite/3.0.1-1

the package does not migrate to testing due to the dependency relation
explained here:

So libreadosm1 is not in testing and thus spatialite-tools remains
uninstallable. IMHO the consequence would be to file a removal from
testing request.

I'd volunteer to do so if you might be busy with other stuff.

Kind regards

Bug#705046: unblock: debian-gis/0.0.2

Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org

Please unblock package debian-gis

As announced in [1] I now uploaded debian-gis metapackages targeting at
Wheezy. The changes in the debian-gis package are to a large extend
auto generated by blends-dev and the full debdiff (attached
debian-gis_0.0.2.debdiff.gz) is a bit hard to read because the files in
tasks/ are serving at the same time used as documentation for the Debian
GIS web sentinel[2]. There is no reasonable way to maintain this in a
separate source so the diff is larger than you would usually accept
these days. However, this was explained in [1] and was done this way in
the last releases as well (and recently for other Blends).

To enable you concentrating on the *relevant* changes which are caused
due to changes in the package pool (some packages became removed and
some became accepted since the last generation of the metapackages) I
have split of the parts of the debdiff which are more easy to inspect to
see what relevant changes in the dependencies have actually happended.
Please feel free to inspect:

Bug#580170: [Help] Trying to upgrade mkgmap but failed with Java problem

2013-06-05 Thread Andreas Tille
Hi,

I updated the packaging of mkgmap in SVN

   svn://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-grass/packages/mkgmap/trunk

to recent packaging standards and latest upstream version.
Unfortunately the build failed with

/usr/bin/time --format 'Real: %E, %S+%U' java -XX:+UseCompressedOops -Xmx700m
-cp build/classes uk.me.parabola.mkgmap.main.Main --tdbfile --family-id=909
--series-name=other map --description='A test map'
/opt/data/uk-071010-1.osm.gz

exit.
Command exited with non-zero status 1

My guess is that this might be a quite simple problem for a Java expert
who is comfortable with build.xml.

Any hint to revitalise this de-facto orphaned OSM tool?

Kind regards

   Andreas.

Hi Emmanuel,

Ahhh, it seems javahelper ist tricked by the existence of the Makefile.
I blindly assumed that javahelper would prefer ant over make which is

It seems maven is somehow involved even if at least to my limited
knowledge this would use ratherpm.xml rather than build.xml. It
seems I need to edit build.xml to tell ant to use local JAR files
rather than trying to download anything. But what exactly?

PS: Don't forget to CC debian-j...@lists.debian.org for your Java
questions, there are plenty of people skilled in Java willing to help
 there :)

Thanks for the additional hint - attaching a full quote of my original
mail for debian-java readers below.

Cool! That's exactly the way I would have suggested because it works
like a charm in Debian Med team with BioLinux (which is also an Ubuntu
derivative). Is there some documentation (some kind of policy document
to make this more visible for newcomers)? From several postings here
I had the impression that Debian resources might be underestimated /
rarely used.

 However, we don't
decide when a new release is uploaded to unstable.

Well, the question is whether this is actually a *decision* or rather
a matter of time resources.

 Francesco is the
 administrator of DebianGIS.

I know Francesco from some DebConfs in the past and I think he would not
mind to get some helping hand. While Debian GIS is not my main focus
and I'm quite far from considering myself as a GIS expert my OSM
activities have brought me closer to Debian GIS and I'd be happy to
sponsor packages after coordination with Francesco. I have no idea who
strict he considers his administrator role but from my experience in
other teams structures in Debian are rather flat - provided that you are
not breaking anything it is fine to do something instead of waiting
until somebody else have done it.

The DebianGIS process is also longer...
so the softwares are not immediately pushed in unstable.

This is exactly the point where I would like to help if anyhow possible.

To start with this help I also ported the Debian GIS thermometer once
written by Francesco most probably in the intention to make the
cooperation more effective:

http://blends.alioth.debian.org/gis/thermometer/ubuntu_debian-gis_thermometer.html

The port is using common Debian Blends techniques and I think I provided
some extra features not available previously. So I'm quite serious to
support the DebianGIS - UbuntuGIS cooperation to the best of my skills.
Any ideas how I can be of more help are perfectly welcome.

Kind regards

   Andreas.

Just a question: Is there any connection also to Debian GIS team[1]? I
lived under the impression that it might make sense to work together but
questions previous hints to work inside Debian were basically ignored.
I'm just asking this question seriously because if this might not be the
case I would start personally in checking with Debian GIS team how we
could adopt from UbuntuGIS (which seems to be top down to me - but better
 than no connection at all).

 Thanks for enlightening

Not sure what you mean. We extensively use the work of the DebianGIS
team. However, we won't ask them to do the ubuntu tasks.

With resources I mean for instance that somebody on this list was asking
how to do some Java packaging and obviously had no idea that it might be
straightforward to ask on debian-java mailing list. However, it could
be that since I'm news to the various GIS teams I just do not know all
the internals.

That would be very nice. Francesco has probably a lot more to do in
addition of DebianGIS... and I have the same problem. I would be
happy if someone could put some time in DebianGIS and UbuntuGIS.

My main focus is Debian Med and general works on Blends. But I like to
do some share of my time for *GIS. So just test me with your sponsoring
requests or ideas to enhance the Blends framework for better use in
*GIS.

This is exactly the point where I would like to help if anyhow possible.

Great. I wonder if we could do an irc meeting with all debiangis and
ubuntugis members. Talking together, we could probably figure out
 how everyone can help to.

I could join a GIS IRC meeting in evening hours (European time zones).

Kind regards

Andreas.
