[SlimDevices: Plugins] Moose and multiple Artist tags
In trying to figure out why certain albums were showing up under the wrong artists in Moose, I discovered the following: if an album has more than one "Artist" tag, Moose will pick the second Artist tag (or at least, not the first one ... I didn't investigate any albums that had more than two Artist tags) to list that album under. Further, even of only one track on an album has multiple Artist tags, Moose will list that entire album under the artist listed in the second tag. For example, for whatever reason one of my "Antony and the Johnsons" albums listed the following two tags: Artist = Antony and the Johnsons Artist = Johnsons And the album was listed under "Johnsons" in the Moose Artist tree. I am not sure why some of my albums would have multiple Artist tags, but I suspect that many of them do. Is there any way to have Moose grab the first artist tag rather than the last, if multiple Artist tags exist? This was not easy to track down ... Tag&Rename (my normal tagging tool) only shows the first Artist tag ... I discovered the existence of more than one Artist tag when I used MP3Tag to look at the tags. -- Jon Jon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2848 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36229 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

Moose does all-sorts when scanning, but i'd have thought if an album has multiple artist roles, it would show up in the various artists group rather than a specific artist. If this isnt happening, my guess is slimserver's only storing one of the artists for the album, or even worse, splitting it into two albums. Multiple artists for single tracks isnt something i've really tested, but I have had a couple of VA albums which insist on being split up into single albums for each artist and suspect this is the cause.. (i too use tag&rename so dont get to see the 2nd artist - i'll try mp3tag).. -- - Dr Lovegrove http://www.rusticrhino.com/drlovegrove http://groups.google.com/group/moosenews ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

I do not believe slimserver was splitting it into two albums, but I'd have to go back into MP3tag and put the second artist tag back in, and then rescan, to be certain. Quick plug (sort of) for MP3tag: I use Tag&Rename for most of my tagging work, as I find the interface more intuitive and easier to use. But for heavy-duty work, MP3tag is a great tool. It lets you see all of the extended tags (T&R does not) and has some excellent scripting capabilities. I've created simple macros to take actions such as importing all of my folder.jpg files (cover art) directly into the albumart tag for each corresponding track ... modifying the artistsort tag across my entire library ... etc. If you need to make a global change to all of your tags across your entire library (especially complex changes), then MP3tag is the way to go. -- Jon Jon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2848 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36229 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Moose and multiple Artist tags
I found another album containing multiple artist tags, and this one will probably provide the best insight into what might be going on. The album is by a single artist (Chris Botti), but several of the tracks have multiple artist tags listed, and the artists represented in the artist tags varies by track. For example: Track 01: ARTIST = Chris Botti Track 02: ARTIST = Chris Botti; Paula Cole ARTIST = Paula Cole Track 06: ARTIST = Chris Botti ARTIST = Chris Botti; Billy Childs Track 08: ARTIST = Chris Botti ARTIST = Chris Botti; Billy Childs; Dominic Miller; Sting ARTIST = Sting All of these have a BAND tag (which Tag & Rename calls the ALBUMARTIST tag) of Chris Botti. Now, on to the behavior: This album displays properly in the SlimServer web interface (most likely because of the ALBUMARTIST tag - I believe that SlimServer uses this tag to represent the artist if the tag exists); when you click on a track that has multiple ARTIST tags, the web interface shows all of the artists listed as "Track Artists" ... for example, for track 08, SlimServer shows Album Artist: Chris Botti Track Artists: Chris Botti, Sting, Chris Botti; Billy Childs; Dominic Miller; Sting Notice that SlimServer has just blindly listed all the ARTIST tags, one after another ... hence Chris Botti and Sting are both listed twice. In Moose, under the "library" tab of the library tree, this entire album (all tracks) shows up under the artist name of "Chris Botti; Billy Childs; Dominic Miller; Sting". For whatever reason, Moose picked what appears to be the longest ARTIST string on the album, and applied that as the artist for all the tracks on the album. By the way, this album does NOT show up under the other artists (for example, it is not listed in Moose under "Sting"). Under the "Server" tab of the Moose Library Tree, the album shows up under both Chris Botti and Sting, but not under Paula Cole, Billy Childs, or any of the other artists (probably because I have other Sting albums in my collection). For now, I will leave the tags as they are on this album, in case you'd like me to test anything. -- Jon Jon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2848 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36229 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Moose and multiple Artist tags
Does Moose look at the ALBUMARTIST (BAND in MP3tag) tag? I am not a tagging expert, but I think this is also called the TPE2 tag. That might be an easy way to tackle the problem ... I'm pretty certain this is how SlimServer does it ... uses the ALBUMARTIST tag if it exists, reverts to the ARTIST tag if ALBUMARTIST is blank ... -- Jon Jon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2848 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36229 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Moose and multiple Artist tags
>Track 08: >ARTIST = Chris Botti >ARTIST = Chris Botti; Billy Childs; Dominic Miller; Sting >ARTIST = Sting > How have these tags been entered in the mp3 file? I believe that SlimServer doesn't currently support multiple artist tags (although someone provided a patch recently that allows null-delimited list of artists in the same way as it supports multiple genres). I enter my multiple artists all in one ARTIST tag using a field separator character ";". Library/Artists looks like it lists album artists to me, whilst Server/Artists lists albums that an artist appears on. Eg, in my Library/Artists/Brian Eno list I have 9 albums, but in Server/Artists/Brian Eno I have 25 albums, which includes his appearances on various artist albums, with Fripp & Eno, Cluster & Eno, etc. Phil ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

I did not enter the tags manually, I use Windows Media Center to rip my CDs, and occasionally use Tag&Rename to retrieve tags when WMC can't find them ... so one of these tools (most likely, WMC) is doing it. Interestingly, I tried a little experiment ... used MP3tag to enter multiple ARTIST tags on one track, and when I saved the file MP3tag removed all the redundant ARTIST tags (including ones that were already there) and just left a single one in the metadata. > I believe that SlimServer doesn't currently support multiple artist tags > ... Just curious, on those other albums where Eno appears, is he listed as an ARTIST or as a COMPOSER? I took a look at an album where Eno appears (David Bowie/Heroes) and noticed that Eno was listed in the COMPOSER tag, not the ARTIST tag. Eno is a good artist to use for this example, as he seems to show up everywhere :-) -- Jon Jon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2848 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36229 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Moose and multiple Artist tags
Hmmm, well, I cant repeat the problem in Moose no matter what I do - it always puts the Chris Botti album in the various artists group. I managed to get WMP to tag the files, but it only gives them 1 artist tag per track (albeit with multiple artists in the tag). All the tracks get the band tag, and Moose assumes the album to be a various artists album as not all of the artist tags match. Slimserver seems to use both bands and artists, so the album appears in all combinations, but only the band tag of Chris Botti has the whole album. I guess that's the correct behaviour considering the tags.. Maybe the thing to do is get Moose to look at the band tag if it suspects an album is a various artists, then list it under band rather than VA. Im a bit suprised you're not seeing it in the VA group in Moose though. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Moose and multiple Artist tags
Dr Lovegrove;210166 Wrote: > > Is there any way of exporting all your tags in mp3tag so that I can > apply them to my set of files ? I tried ... unfortunately, MP3tag is extracting just a single ARTIST per track. I also tried exporting them with Tag&Rename ... same result. The interesting thing, however, is this: in situations where multiple ARTIST tags exist, MP3tag appears to be choosing the longest of the ARTIST strings. Meanwhile, Tag&Rename is choosing what appears to be the first of the multiple ARTIST strings (which is always the actual artist). I'll attach those export files so you don't think I'm completely loony :-) Note, these files are actually .html files, but I had to rename them as .txt so that this forum would allow me to upload them (you'll want to change them back). Worst case, if this can't be fixed ... I did a quick visual scan of my albums in the Library Tree, and it appears (as best as I can tell from a quick visual inspection of 800+ albums) that only a dozen or so albums suffer from this multiple ARTIST tag situation, so it shouldn't be too bad for me to fix these manually. +---+ |Filename: TagRenameTest.txt| |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2996| +---+ -- Jon Jon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2848 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36229 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Moose and multiple Artist tags
As you discovered, the WMA file container supports multiple Artists, Composers & Genres per track... and Slimserver supports it correctly. Windows Media Player 10/11 works correctly with multiple names, as does the Windows Vista shell. In the UI, you'll see the names with semicolons between them... but when it actually writes the metadata to the file, it'll store discrete tags for each name. Regretably, most tools like Mp3tag will wipe out the multiple tags in WMA and keep (I think) the last one only when writing. (The author has been notified, but it's a low priority bug.) I'm sure Tag&Rename is similar or worse. FYI: In WMA, internally Album Artist is WM/AlbumArtist... which Slimserver also correctly reads. Hope this clears up some of the chaos... -- grommet grommet's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5959 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36229 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins
