Cold Mountain
I just finished this book (Civil War novel), which was damn good, and I was looking in my atlas for Cold Mountain and could not find it. This may be a dumb question, but is there actually a Cold Mountain somewhere in North Carolina? Could anyone from that part of the country help me out? Thanks, TWM twang content: Steve Earle mentioned the book a couple times during his recent show === -- Tom Mohr usually here: [EMAIL PROTECTED] sometimes here: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Do You Yahoo!? Come And Go, Molly Snow (was:RE: Devil's Dream (WAS: Cold Mountain))
Kelly's post reminded me to mention my favorite novel about country-type music, specifically bluegrass. Written by Mary Ann Taylor-Hall, Come And Go, Molly Snow is a story about a young woman fiddler struggling to reconcile herself to the accidental death of her daughter; it's got some of the best writing about the experience of playing bluegrass I've ever read. I believe it's out in paperback now... Jon Weisberger Kenton County, KY [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://home.fuse.net/jonweisberger/
Re: Devil's Dream (WAS: Cold Mountain)
One of the best things that I ever did was to get my mother to start reading Lee Smith. Now we have something to talk about at Thanksgiving. Couldn't get into "Fair and Tender Ladies" or "Family Linen", but "Saving Grace" ruled in Hell. But then again, I'm a sucker for snake handling. Tom Moran

I don't know the location, but FWIW, what a great book. It's the kind of book where you keep reading paragraphs aloud to whomever is in the room with you, because the writing is so good. --Jamie S. Cold Mountain CD
Jim Nelson said about the Cold Mountain CD that will be packaged with the book: That's a great deal for those of us who've had the book for over a year now... Like I said. You people are crabby. Jim Caliguri said about the CD being sold only with the book (starting in March): Is this right? I received a copy of the record today, but no book. I've heard raves from other sources about it, but has anybody else here read it? Just looking for advice. And while I'm generally not a big Tim O'Brien fan, I think I'm gonna go slip that disc in the player right now. That might be because you are a reviewer or something. The CD is only going to be sold with the book in stores, but you will be able to get it seperately if you see one of those guys in concert (I'm guessin'). I think those of you, like Jim, who aren't big Tim O'Brien fans should really give this CD a listen (when it comes out). If you want an idea of what it sounds like listen to Dirk Powell's CD "If I Should Go 10,000 Miles" on Rounder (specifically, the tracks Tim sings on). Remember too, that this isn't a Tim O'Brien CD. It's a Tim O'Brien, Dirk Powell and John Hermann CD. Those other two shouldn't be overlooked because they kick butt. Disclaimer: This CD has nothing to do with Sugar Hill. I just love it. steve

Remember that piece of literary trash "Bridges of Yoknapatawpha County"? There was a cd for that, too (with the "author" singing. Yikes!) when it became huge. When's the Cold Mountain movie coming out?

FWIW, everyone I know who's heard this CD has gone on about at some length (my minor-weasel copy just arrived this a.m., so I'm just now getting a first listen). I don't understand where the problem is - well, I mean, I guess I do as far as those folks who don't want to buy another copy of the book just to get the CD are concerned (though I will guarandamntee you you'll be able to get it from O'Brien et.al. at PAs), but beyond that, where's the beef? It's great old-time music, at least the first few cuts are, so who cares that they made the album because of a popular book? It should happen more often - you know, like, new people hearing you play the music you want to. What are you complaining about, Matt? On the other hand, Matt's absolutely right to whine about a dearth of Damnations, TX advances; what's going on, some kind of boycott of The Heartland? Right around here is where the real tastemakers, like Mark Wyatt and Dave Purcell, are. Jon Weisberger Kenton County, KY [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://home.fuse.net/jonweisberger/
RE: Cold Mountain CD
Um...I don't think *I* was doing the complaining here. I was refering to this: Jim Nelson said about the Cold Mountain CD that will be packaged with the book: That's a great deal for those of us who've had the book for over a year now... [Matt Benz] Them ain't my words. My less than clear point inn reply to the above is that *of course* there wasn't a cd with the first runs of the book: it had to become a runaway best seller to justify new products associated with the book. The cd exists because of the interest created by sales. So those who bought the book way back when should hold their beefs. And get the cd anyway. Right? On the other hand, Matt's absolutely right to whine about a dearth of Damnations, TX advances; what's going on, some kind of boycott of The Heartland? Right around here is where the real tastemakers, like Mark Wyatt and Dave Purcell, are. [Matt Benz] What he said!

[Matt Benz] Ah, I see the misunderstanding: Again, I'm not complaining about this; I agree, it's great to see this kind of interest in offshoots, etc...Just pointing out the obvious marketing issues, not bitching about the way the disc was made. Does any of this make sense?
RE: Cold Mountain CD
By the way, as far as buying the thing goes, a healthy portion of the one-sheet is devoted to how clearances were obtained, etc. in order to put out the CD, including the following passage: "In fact, the terms with MGM-UA stipulate that the CD can only be sold packaged with the novel, so the consumer that purchases Songs From The Mountain will get a free copy of Cold Mountain in paperback" which would seem to suggest that marketing distribution (DNA) will be CD-oriented, not book-orientedl, so instead of buying the book again just to get the CD, you can think of it as just buying the CD and getting an extra copy of the book g. Can you tell us what's on the CD? Jim Nelson

When's the Cold Mountain movie coming out? [Me] Um, you're wrong. First of all, Dirk Powell got the idea of this CD over a year ago before the book was a smash. He read it, liked it, and asked me how to get in touch with Charles, a local author. Secondly, the movie is coming out, but when that happens they can no longer sell the CD grouped with the bookso they aren't just jumping on the gravy train. steve
