Re: [PEDA] Spam trawlers in this group

2001-08-27 Thread ga

Hi,

there seems to be a coincidence in receiving spam (with PEDA as subject !!)
and posting to this group. After I sent some posts during the last
fortnight, I received about half a dozen of spam mails, half of them from
.au servers, the rest from elsewhere. Someone seems to collect addresses
for advertising. One example, where one might argue if it's spamming or
not, is the EDA Tools Cafe News I received twice since last week. I did
not ask for it, nor am I interested in all the US job offers it contains,
nor in the weak rest of it. So I count this under spamming also.

Quote of Mr. Abd ulRahman:
They (Techserv) do offer advertising to the list -- no one has
purchased it, it was pretty expensive last time I checked; but such mail
would come as a normal post to the list.)

Hopefully they stick to their steep prices, as I would think it as really
annoying if we also would receive authorized spamming in the future.

Someone else probably knows better, but I think the HP4 laser jet has/had problems
with a great many applications (as I recall, back when it was a hot item, ~1992,
many apps crashed when attempting to print to the device). You might start by trying
to update the driver, and/or check Hp's site for troubleshooter info. I did a quick
search for you at Protel's (um, I mean Altium) site, (http://www.protel.com) but
either the KB is busted, poorly written, or simply no longer contains any entries
regarding the HP4L (I am almost positive that it once did...)

I believe the HPGL drivers were pretty solid. I think this machine was also
released with postscript support and therein lies the rub. You had to tweak
the manual settings to get it up right. That is a memory from eons when I

Re: [PEDA] Spam trawlers in this group

2001-08-27 Thread Bagotronix Tech Support

All I want for Christmas is:

I wish someone would design a virus that affects only e-mail spam
origination computers. The virus would cause these computers to melt down
into a puddle of bubbling silicon and epoxy. A modified version of it using
touch tones could be used to melt down the computer systems of
telemarketers.

But seriously, I can't tell whether or not spam occurs as a result of
posting to this list. Most of the spam is weight-loss, work-at-home scams,
porno offers, or the Nigerian money laundering scam. These things are
targeted to the general population, not engineering groups in particular. I
get this stuff every day, whether or not I post to the Protel user's list.

Did you install the print previewer in 98 before upgrading?

I had to deinstall and reinstall Protel 99SE from scratch because some DLL
or registry setting was messed up by some addon I installed.

Usually when I get weird exceptions like this I have found them to be
because of an old DLL. Before going back to Protel 98 I'd uninstall
everything to do with Protel, then do a fresh install of Protel99SE and
service pack 6. Doing this on my Win2k machine cleaned up all the strange
exceptions. I just wish it would give a closing Protel dialog box when it
takes 20 seconds of doing nothing to close.

Oh and I just tested print preview with the Win2k driver for a Laserjet 4M
Plus with no problem on my Win2k machine.

Re: [PEDA] For Those About to Reinstall (was Printing problems)

2001-08-27 Thread Clive . Broome

I receved this advice from Protel when doing a re install.

Hello Clive,

I'll forward this information on technical resources. Regarding PLD with
there being no devices in the list. It this is occurring then you will
definitely have to reinstall Protel 99 SE. Follow the steps below,

WARNING:
A complete reinstall removes all customisations to menus and toolbars etc.

1. Uninstall the Service Pack/s using Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.
2. Uninstall the Protel 99SE program using Add/Remove programs in Control
Panel.
3. Manually delete the Protel 99SE files from the Windows/Winnt folder.
To do this use the Find files function from the START menu button.
Search for *99SE.* it will probably find about 25-30 files, delete these.
4. Reinstall Protel 99SE.
5. Reinstall Service Pack 5

2001-08-27 Thread Brad Velander

Michael,
Possibly the EDA Tool Cafe is getting it from PCD Mag or some of the
other Miller Freeman group publications, I just recently renewed a couple of
subscriptions and supplied my email address for further subscription
renewals. That's got to be it, blame Pete Waddel, flame his butt at the next
PCB Design Conference! 8^
Possibly someone could make the enquiry of PCD? Check what they
state the email address shall or shall not be used for, etc.. I will try to
take a look at their subscription page tonight, anybody got a contact within
the magazine itself?

 G'day,
I too have had to suffer with this lame EDA Tools Cafe News
 spam and I
haven't posted here for a couple of months.
They must get the info from the archives. I did however
 register with PCDmag
list a few days before it started. Maybe it comes from there.

Nah, doesn't compute. I got the same thing, and I dropped my subscription to PCD
nearly a year ago. My guess is still that it comes from here, whether by some ibsystem
employee subcribing and violating the group policy or as Mike Beavis suggested,
through the archives.

The interesting thing, though, is that their site doesn't include Protel as an EDA
vendor...

In any case, I'm generating a list of possible reply addresses for a potent
deinculsion request addresses at ibsystems by PEDA members. More to come...

FWIW, ibsystems has been at this spam game for quite some time. See google and enter

Re: [PEDA] For Those About to Reinstall (was Printing problems)

2001-08-27 Thread Kathy Quinlan

Hi all,

Did the advice bellow and it still happens, If I do not delete the pcb
preview file before re entering protel, I get a read error in a PCBPrint.DLL
and the search function complains of no documents of type PCB found shrug
I can open them from the explorer pain.

Any Ideas before I am forced to go back to Protel 98 ??

Kat.

 1. Uninstall the Service Pack/s using Add/Remove programs in Control
Panel.

I know the feeling, I searched the KB about printing problems as our
archives indicate someone else was sending Protel reports on printing
crashes under win2k, but no issues came up :o(

I have tried printing to my Canon BJC4650 with the same problem Exception
 occured in PCBPrint: PrintPreview

As I said schematics are fine, just not PCB's.

I went to HP's site and upgraded my laserjet driver also but still no go
 :o(

Any Ideas or is it only fixable by dropping back to Protel 98 ???

 Kat.

problems with a great many applications (as I recall, back when it was a
hot item, ~1992, many apps crashed when attempting to print to the

site for troubleshooter info. I did a quick search for you at Protel's
(um,
I mean Altium) site, (http://www.protel.com) but either the KB is busted,
poorly written, or simply no longer contains any entries regarding the
HP4L
