Could it be a solution to build libffi with gcc, then configure Python with '--with-system--ffi' and compile with the sun compiler, or would this introduce the dependencies on libgcc or whatever again that Ulrich wanted to avoid? It depends on the processor and the code, but chances are high that this would indeed create a dependency on libgcc. You are mixing the stdlib in with the language in terms of what is required for Python to work, which I think is unfair. Just because some part of the stdlib isn't portable to some OS does not mean Python is not supported on that platform. If you can run a pure Python module that does not depend on any C extension, then that platform has the support needed to run Python. Everything else is extra (which is why we have modules in the stdlib only available on specific platforms). -Brett I don't think it is unfair. If the development team decides one day to reimplement essential extensions like math, _socket, select, _ssl, pwd, grp, time, _locale, zlib... based on ctypes because it may be much easier to maintain python modules instead of dealing with complicated C code, Python will become pretty useless. It's like a cool radio without the chance to get any batteries for it, pretty useless. Platform specific modules are documented as such and nobody would expect a _winreg module on AIX or HP-UX. As said before, PyOpenGL is an example of an extension that moved from C code to Python/ctypes, luckily we don't use it, but what if the maintainers of MySQL-Python or cx_Oracle decide to move to ctypes. Having the ctypes extension in the stdlib doesn't imply it runs on any platform where python runs. Extension writers should keep this in mind when they decide to use ctypes. They should document, that their extension depends on ctypes and therefore doesn't run on platforms where ctypes doesn't work. It does that too - the unit tests I just added to the tracker issue for this proposal will actually start to fail if something is added to the operator module without the unit tests for the proposed ProxyMixin being updated appropriately (it would actually probably be a good thing to have something similar in the weakref.proxy test suite to prevent a repeat of our effort with forgetting to update that when the operator.index slot was added) A Python implementation may be able to do this just fine, but the performance penalty would make it uninteresting for many large applications. It should still be faster than the classic class __getattr__ based proxy implementations it is primarily intended to replace. People that are already using a C-based implementation like zope.proxy aren't going to be affected by the removal of classic classes in 3.0, since they weren't relying on them anyway. In many ways, the TestProxyMixin test suite may prove more useful in the long run than the ProxyMixin class itself, since the test suite provides a template for how to test that a proxy class is doing its job, and also to automatically detect when new C-level operations have been added to the interpreter that the proxy class doesn't support. For what it's worth, zope.proxy does support subclassing. But not in a mixin style - since zope.proxy is an extension class in its own right, it can't be combined with other extension classes. The Python version can be combined with anything. Ulrich, if *you* have access to these platforms and want to help a good start which hopefully wouldn't take too much time would be to compile the current libffi release [1], run the test suite, and report the results. Compile with gcc, for a start, and note that the testsuite requires dejagnu (the PyObjC folks have written a dejagnu replacement in Python for testing libffi, but I haven't tried that). I will comment when I have spend some time with 4.7. Any comment, Greg?. In any case, what would be the procedure to update the buildbot infraestructure?. No, DO NOT update Berkeley DB yet!. I keep a private branch in pybsddb for BDB 4.7 support, waiting for Oracle publication. Since they already pushed 4.7.25 out (no pre warning for bindings developers, too bad!), I think I can publish pybsddb 4.7.0 in a couple of days. That done, I will update python version. PS: pybsddb 4.7.0 will support Berkeley DB 4.0 to 4.7. As said before, PyOpenGL is an example of an extension that moved from C code to Python/ctypes, luckily we don't use it, but what if the maintainers of MySQL-Python or cx_Oracle decide to move to ctypes. Having the ctypes extension in the stdlib doesn't imply it runs on any platform where python runs. Extension writers should keep this in mind when they decide to use ctypes. They should document, that their extension depends on ctypes and therefore doesn't run on platforms where ctypes doesn't work. Plus, even if ctypes works, the code might be incorrect, because they had been assuming structure layouts and symbolic constants that have just a different definition on some other platform, causing the extension module to crash. Writing portable ctypes modules is really hard - significantly harder than writing portable C code (although writing non-portable ctypes code is apparently easier than writing non-portable C code). This thread has diverged a bit from the original topic. I suggest going ahead and adding pyprocessing to the library. IMO, its functionality is going to be an essential capability as more and more computers ship with multiple processors. At this point, the basic API for pyprocessing seems well thought-out and somewhat stable. Over time, I expect the implementation will get tweaked in a number of ways including support more platforms as developers figure-out that they like the idea enough to write some platform dependent patches. Putting this functionality in 2.6/3.0 would provide a really nice incentive to update from Py2.5. It would be a sad lost opportunity if this module had to wait another couple years. Since they already pushed 4.7.25 out (no pre warning for bindings developers, too bad!), I think I can publish pybsddb 4.7.0 in a couple of days. That done, I will update python version. PS: pybsddb 4.7.0 will support Berkeley DB 4.0 to 4.7. So, the buildbots don't need to be upgraded.. unless we decide that Python 4.6/3.0 will have Berkeley DB 4.7. Seems like the amount of work you have to do has doubled now that you've been added as an svn committer, given that you're maintaining multiple branches of code, one for pybsddb, and one for an official Python branch. I was under the impression that pybsddb would be assimilated into trunk/ Lib/bsddb and become the sole pybsddb incarnation. That is, you'd ditch the separate SourceForge pybsddb project and just work directly in the Python tree. I think I remember reading some concerns you had about doing this last week though, surrounding things like wanting to be able to release pybsddb versions more frequently than Python versions are released. Just because you live in trunk/Lib/bsddb shouldn't prevent you from doing this though; in fact, as long as you're sensitive to major release timeframes, I'm sure we'd love trunk to always track the latest Berkeley DB version; if all the buildbots stay green with 4.7 and there are no regressions in functionality, then hey, lets go with 4.7 for 2.6/3.0. It's probably safe to say that you're the one doing the most work with the code base and Berkeley DB in general, which means you'll be in a much better position to advise us as to which version we should be including or ignoring for a given Python release. In general, if we can support the latest release, we will. If Oracle come out with Berkeley DB 4.8 a week after 2.6 is released, that's fine, we'll keep release26-maint chugging along with 4.7, but we can switch trunk over to 4.8 once you're ready. By the time it's ready to cut 2.7, who knows, trunk's bsddb may be supporting Berkeley DB 5.2 at that stage. I would also think that you could cut independent releases (in the sense that they're not linked to any Python release schedule) of 'pybsddb' from the code living in trunk/Lib/bsddb. That way, users of 2.6 could still easy_install (or whatever) the latest pybsddb 4.8.0 to pick up the newest features.
