[RBW] Re: Question about White Ind Dos Freewheel
My gearing is a White double16 -19 and 36x39 giving me a 66,60 and 51 inch gear. I plan on a 22 tooth freewheel eventually for the flip side for those real long climbs. I usually leave my SimpleOne in the 66 inch gear but my area is pretty hilly so I sometimes find myself using the 36x19 giving me the 51. Since my gearing is exactly three teeth apart I don't have to move the axle in the dropout going from the 16x39=66 to the 19x36=51. I tried as an experiment to ride a local hilly and flat 15 mile loop in the 51 at a relaxed pace and while somewhat frustrating on the flat it wasn't bad. I just found myself coasting a little more than usual. I think the idea is to find a gear that you can make it up most modest hills in your area and that you can also spin at a comfortable cruising speed on the flats withmaybe 12-18 mph. If you are a 'hammerhead' that will frustrate you but its better for your knees. A bailout gear that is lower or one for headwinds (or when feeling tired) is nice to have and I use mine about 20% of the time and am glad I have it. [RBW] Re: Commute Adventures - Sometimes More Than Bargained For
Bunny hopping on a commuter is tough. I'm retired now but I found the nearly constant road construction on my commute the single most challenging part of commuting. It never gets mentioned in the encouraging blogs. Sorry to read about the Foss tubes; I've had high hopes for mine. [RBW] Re: Question about White Ind Dos Freewheel
I shift my quickbeam quite a bit, which I guess seems to be unusual among QB/SO owners when these threads come up, but I'm not really sure why. I have a White 16/19 fw, a 22t ACS on the other side, and the stock QB crank with 40/32 rings. For riding more than 15 miles, I use 40/16, and this is mainly for going to work which is 15 or 17 miles if I go the longer way. For the riding in the city of boston, or with my significant other, I'll switch to 40/19, which takes about 5 seconds.Sometimes also use that for long rides too when I'm not in a hurry. When we go in the woods, which we do often thankfully, I flip the rear wheel and ride 40/22 to get to the trails (20 seconds), then do another 5-second change to 32/22 at the trailhead if it's a hilly, rocky, root-heavy trail, which in New England they generally are. I really enjoy the concept of the QB and feel that it works great exactly as the ad copy originally described- switching gears now and then, but benefiting from the simpleness, quietness, and one-speedness of a single speed most of the time. I have derailleured bicycles too, but riding a QB is sufficiently different and pleasant, in additional ways that I can't easily explain, to justify its design. -Matt On Monday, April 30, 2012 8:55:52 PM UTC-4, EricP wrote: For the folks that have one of these on their Quickbeam or SimpleOne - do you actually swap gears that much? [RBW] Re: Question about White Ind Dos Freewheel
P.S. for shifting gears when there isn't a stick laying around- which there is most of the time-I have used the following at various times: 5mm allen key from saddlebag pocket, 90% of time pocket knife, left the allen key on workbench Kryptonite lock key, didn't have my knife Pencil I find that the trick when flipping the rear wheel is to grab it by the tire with your fingertips rather than grabbing the rim, to avoid getting brake/road grime all over your hand. But yeah, your fingers get a little dirt on them when flipping the wheel.I wipe them off on the grass or my pantleg. For flipping the bike over to do this with a basket on it, that's where bungee nets come in. [RBW] Re: Why I Like Commuting On My Bike
From 2006 through most of 2011, my commute to Hiawatha Cyclery was a 2 minute walk. Because of changing life circumstances, I moved last Fall to where I have a 5 mile one-way commute, which is lovely. Minneapolis is an extremely bike-friendly city, and I live in one of the bike-friendliest neighborhoods in this fair city, and it boggles my mind that cars passing on my street outnumber bikes probably 50-1. I can't imagine driving everyday because riding my bike seems SO much easier and more pleasant, even in winter. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. RE: [RBW] Marks Rack Rear Mounted Question
When I got my QB, I asked Riv to mount a Mark's Rack on the rear for exactly the purpose you suggest -- a Lil' Loafer, for tools, tubes and stuff. They used the struts only, no diving board, and it worked great, very solid. My default setting is that if Riv does it that way, it's ok by me. RE: [RBW] Question about White Ind Dos Freewheel
I have shifted my DOS-ENO equipped Quickbeam exactly once -- to road test how much easier my low (32/19) gear was, in anticipation of using it on the initial 20+ mile climb on Riv Rally East 2012. (As it turned out, the RRE single speed contingent both made the climb in our normal gears -- 40/16 and 46/19, respectively, both around 65 or 66 gear inches.) I ride my QB on my commute (4-5 miles, mostly downhill to work, mostly uphill home), and I would echo other comments -- you'd be surprised what you can learn to be comfortable climbing in your normal gear. I'm out of the saddle quite a bit on the way home (both for some short steep climbs and some longer less rigorous ones), but I've come actually to enjoy the honest work. Cleanses work-related tension. There is one very short very steep trail climb that I've never managed without 15 or 20 yards of walking, but I keep trying every day -- the definition of insanity. I also ride the QB on 15-25 mile weekend rides with some serious rollers, and again I don't shift -- just tough out the climbs, which are steeper than on my commute, but never more than maybe 1000 meters. So recognizing that my local topography is reasonably well-suited to a SS, I still feel constrained to say that without ever having shifted it, the Quickbeam is my favorite of all my bikes -- so much so that I bought a SimpleOne as a new commuter, and will modify the QB to be a sort of gofast SS. I love them both. I admire people that are passionate about finely crafted and designed bikes. Nice to know that the interest in steel frames and classic bike gear is alive and well in Riv riders! Because of brands like Rivendell the revival of classic touring bikes is making a come-back with bikes like the Kogswell, Gunnar, Salsa, and Surly. That's one thing I like about cycling is that in most cases nobody talks another person down because of their choices of bike manufacturer. I ride regularly with people that ride bikes worth a great deal of money and they still admire my 10 year old steel and titanium bikes. In fact a number of my fellow Riv riders commented that they had a Surly LHT as a second or third bike and that is was a tremendous value for the money. I came as an invited guest of a wonderful friend that thought I'd enjoy the ride (we did the whole CO and GAP trail together three years ago) again and to finally get to see the scenery before the Divide since the last time we rode it the rain and fog kept the scenery out of view. I'm so glad I came and got to see the sights despite the threat of rain, snow and cold temps. I feel that it doesn't' matter what brand of bike you ride, but your approach to cycling. That is, touring versus racing. As I've aged I prefer touring and self-supported rides. Again thanks to the welcoming and great group of guys, and BobbyB for organizing the tour (are there any women that would like to join us? We won't bite or geek out too much). [RBW] Re: Riv Rally midwest and Grant's visit and other bike stuff to do in Minneapolis at that time
For those interested in making hotel reservations for the overnight in Wabasha on June 2, I've been told that the website of the biggest hotel there, Americinn, shows that the place is booked. I've also been told that the website is inaccurate and that there may be still rooms available, but you'll have to call them to reserve a room. [800] 634.3444 I'm planning to camp at the city park, and there should be plenty of space for your tent there, too, if the hotel thing doesn't work out for one reason or another. On Monday, April 23, 2012 12:47:16 PM UTC-5, Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery wrote: We managed to schedule Grant's book-signing visit for May 31 at Hiawatha Cyclery in Minneapolis, MN, which dovetails nicely into the Midwest Riv rally that begins the following day, June 1 in Red Wing, MN. It's going to be a solid 4-5 days of Riv-ish bike fun. And you're invited! Here's some detail. Thursday, May 31. I believe the book-signing is scheduled for 6-7:30 PM. I'm going to provide grilled sausages/burgers and/or pulled pork and fancy beer and probably have potluck for the rest. I'm aiming to feed 50 mouths, but maybe 100, who knows! Come by the shop starting around 4-5 pm, and be hungry and ready to talk bikes and look at bikes and ride around on bikes. By pure coincidence, local bike company Salsa Cycles is sponsoring a film at nearby Riverview Theater the same evening. http://revealthepath.com/ I would have hated to miss this, but there is a 9pm showing for the film. We can do the book signing thing with Grant, then anybody who's interested can ride over to the theater (which is an old-timey neighborhood movie theater, not a modern shopping mall cineplex). If past experience is an indicator, attending bike films at the Riverview with several hundred Minneapolis bike nuts and bike industry types will be really, really fun. Seriously, this is going to be a spectacular evening for bike people. Friday, June 1: I'll be leaving in the morning to ride down to Red Wing to meet and greet out-of-towners who are joining the Midwest Riv Rally. You can ride down with me if you want to. The ride to Red Wing is about 65 miles. This meet-and-greet will be an informal sort of thing, but I imagine we'll ride around, eat, drink, be merry, and then scatter off to our respective accommodations. The natural focal point for meeting up in Red Wing will be Bay Point Park. Again, this part is highly unofficial and not at all choreographed. Go to the park, and look for people on nice bikes, and then hang out with them. I'm planning to roll in around 3-4 PM, but that really depends on who rides with me and how fast we go. Saturday, June 2: Meet at Bay Point Park around 8 am. We'll try to ride out around 9 am down the Wisconsin side of Lake Pepin. Expect 50-60 glorious low-traffic miles of mixed terrain, some hills, some gravel, some pavement, perhaps a modest water crossing (or three). There are cafes and pie shops along the route so we don't need to pack much food. Do not ask me how fast the ride will be, please. I simply don't know, and don't care. It's my opinion that the group should stick together. The fast guys and gals can wait for us slowpokes at the tops of hills and at intersections. Everybody should feel free to stop to snap photos, take a breather, slow down, walk up the hills, etc. I don't plan to provide maps or cue sheets for various reasons, but mostly so we don't get too focused on the route and so that the fast people don't turn it into a race. When we get to Wabasha, I'll have camping arranged, but there's at least one hotel there for those who don't care to camp. You're on your own for hotel reservations. At this time, I don't plan to have any support vehicle, so you'll have to carry your own gear or convince someone else to carry it for you. Maybe one of you has a spouse or friend or relative who'd like to be involved but who doesn't want to ride a bike? If so, maybe you could volunteer that person to provide a support vehicle? But my default is no support vehicle, just so we're all prepared. To be clear, my default is no support of any kind. Just a friendly ride, and if something bad happens, we'll figure out how best to handle it. Sunday, June 3: Much like the previous day, except in Minnesota. We'll roll out of Wabasha around 9 am and follow a mixed terrain route, mostly paved, but some gravel, some hills, somewhat more traffic. When we get back to Red Wing, the ride/rally will end. Depending on the time, weather, and mood, I will either look for accommodations for the night in Red Wing, or start riding back to Minneapolis. I'm planning to get back to Minneapolis by Monday afternoon, but it could be Sunday night if the wind blows in the right direction. Any questions or concerns or other stuff? Post it here, and we'll talk. Are you planning to drive in and have room for
[RBW] Re: Riv Rally East
I understand. I'm sure everyone had a great time and were stellar and welcoming sportsmen. My concern was for those who may not have joined because they ride perhaps a Toei or a Singer or whatever. I think we are all literally on the same page as far as wanting and welcoming a variety of participants. I simply don't think calling a ride a rally for a specific brand helps that cause. [RBW] Re: Question about White Ind Dos Freewheel
Thanks everyone for the thoughts. Guess for now, am going to keep it as a single with low-ish gearing (39/17). Hoping to eventually increase motor capacity to switch to a 16t (which I have sitting in a box). May eventually try a Dos. But for now, not going to mess with what isn't broken. [RBW] SimpleOne two week reflections
Simple answer - me like! A lot. It really does seem to disappear underneath while riding. Took it out for a 40 mile ride last Sunday, with a few on gravel roads. Pretty sure I was faster over the gravel than I had been last year on the Hillborne. Sure, a lot of it is the new bike smell - I like something therefore it rides better. Purely psychological. But at this point, am not going to complain. Photo from that ride -http://www.flickr.com/photos/14126468@N05/7126464935/ Still need a Nitto rack for the back, but one is on the way from New York via eBay. Not sure I want to change anything else. But who knows. Only 275 miles on it so far. Maybe in a month or so something will seem obvious. Guess it's a nice way to say glad I decided to purchase the bike. Eric Platt St. Paul, MN -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] WTT 56cm Atlantis
The fine tuning of fit on my beloved 56cm Atlantis has finally reached the point where I think I need a larger frame. Saddle height keeps going up, a setback post has been added and a longer stem is desired and I still want to stretch out more! Looking to trade the frame/fork, headset (cheap but awesome Tange), and wheels for a 58 or 61 Atlantis or 59 AHH frame. Might consider the 58 650B Hilsen, Saluki/Hiluki. No SS couplers since I have an [ignorant] mental block about them. The wheels are (26/559 just in case) 32h Salsa Delgado 22.5mm rims laced to silver Chris King hubs front and back. The frame is in very good condition and straight, no dents, dings, just a few spots on right side of the top tube and right fork leg where it looks like it rubbed a bike rack. The headbadge also has two nicks in the enamel in the sails. [RBW] My new A Homer Hilsen feels perfect!
Sunday, I picked up a new black, Rivet Pearl saddle, which really completes my dream brevet bike. It has been comfortable from the very first minute I installed the saddle and my bike now feels like home. I originally had a Brooks Swift saddle on it, but I couldn't get it to feel right. Perhaps it's because I am slightly more upright than my other bikes, and I am setting my seat far back because that feels most comfortable, since I am able to get the weight off my hands. I got a Nitto lugged seatpost because it has extra setback. Brooks saddles don't have long rails, and for the Swift, I pushed it as far back as it would go, but maybe that wasn't enough. Also the seat is not as wide as the Rivet Pearl, so as more weight goes backwards, I think the extra width helps in the comfort. In all fairness, maybe a B17 would have been good too, but perhaps the shorter length of the Brooks rails could have been an issue. Of course, the owner of Rivet Saddles is a local rider who I have finished some adventures with, so I'm happy to be an early adopter, especially when their product is working so well for me. I'll keep training and am looking forward to my first brevet on the bike in June!
