Re: [RBW] Re: Riv shipping, a new world record

2018-01-12 Thread Patrick Moore
What the heck are you doing placing online orders at 2 am? You can't be
behind Pacific Time (I am 2 hours behind a lot of my clients, which is a
pain).

I once placed an order on Monday morning from Wiggle or somesuch for tires,
standard shipping. I saw the DHL truck leaving my driveway after dropoff on
the following Wednesday afternoon at 3:30. That may well have been a fluke,
given that orders from SJS have never taken less than 5 business days (I
haven't ordered much from Wiggle).

Seconded on Ian's suggestion. Even by frugal working stiff standards, only one
bike if you depend on it for commuting just isn't enough. You wake up one
morning for work and a tire is flat, whaddyagonnado, fix the tire? Uh uh, ride
the other one and save that madness for a relaxing after-work wrenching
session. Keep the Sam!

[RBW] Re: My new Cheviot

2018-01-12 Thread Joe Bernard
Thanks, Julian. I've been through a couple Rivs in the last couple years, but
this feels like a keeper. After a little more riding I feel stronger about it
being more road-ish than my Appaloosa and Clem L were. It reminds me a lot of
my old Romulus; like if you took that bike, dropped the toptube, stretched the
chainstays and popped 650B wheels in there. It would be slightly insane, but
I'd love to see someone do a Full Modern Dropbar with skinny tires on this
frame. With electronic shifting! 

2018-01-12 Thread dougP
John:

On my Atlantis, I have the little Nitto front platform rack (don't recall
the model number) that has just 2 struts. It's always on the bike. Then
when I need panniers I pop on the Tubus Duo. My Atlantis did not come with
any extra rack braze-ons but it was easy to find someone to add the
necessary attachments. Front bag is an Acorn Rando & panniers are
Ortleib.

[RBW] Re: New Bike Syndrome

2018-01-12 Thread Ian A
I would personally say, that if you like the Sam, keep it and leave it exactly
as it is. Too many people regret selling a bike, only to find they miss it and
can't easily replace it. And two bikes is a good number, especially if you
commute or otherwise rely on a bicycle.

You're likely to lose money selling the Sam frame too. If it is in the budget,
you might be pleased with a decision to build the Atlantis all new.

[RBW] Front rack for panniers and handlebar bag

2018-01-12 Thread drew
I’ve used the big front, Nitto 27f and a pass/Stow 3 bar. All are good, though
other than the 27f, not really lowriding.
Downsides:
-Big front feels really big
-27f requires adding/subtracting the low rider mounts and I ended up never
using them
-pass and stow is functionally the best, but finish isn’t as nice as Nitto.

Regardless, sweet ride!

[RBW] My new Cheviot

2018-01-12 Thread Joe Bernard
Thanks, Patrick the Deacon! (I stole that from Grant). I'm really enjoying
singlespeeding, although it's technically 2-speeding, or maybe two versions of
singlespeed.

I put the front derailer on (105 double, I guess I sold my D-A) connected to a
SunRace thumby. I went on a longer ride today and it's perfect for the terrain
around here. There's a big enough gap between chainrings (40-26) that I don't
get the urge to shift-shift-shift on minor hills: the cadence differece is too
drastic so I just keep pedaling in the big gear..this is what I was looking
for. But when it really does become a back-straining grade I can pop down to
the granny for a minute. I totally recommend going this route for anybody
contemplating singling, but has that one annoying hill they're worried about.
It's fun!

Mo better pics. No sunlight yet, but outside where bikes go! Check out the
shifter mounting, I copied it from Jenny's green Trek in Staff Bikes. I wanted
to retain the uncluttered look and bar access of a singlespeed, and with the
Bartube mounted you can hardly tell it's there. Stealthy!

Re: [RBW] Surly Dingle Cog Discontinued

2018-01-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Philip: How do you like the S2 hub? Do you notice drag in overdrive?

I've seriously considered kickbacks, SRAM or SA, as second wheels for my
fixie Rivs, but unfortunately both are overdrive rather than underdrive,
requiring either swapping out a ring for a small one, or installing a cog
too large for my dropouts (if I keep the same chain, which I want to do).
Of course, with 9 speed or older SRAM masterlinks, it would be easy to
splice in or out a section of chain to accomodate a larger rear cog without
pulling the axle off the dropouts ... I certainly don't want to mess with
my rings.

For example: on the errand Riv: 48 X 17/19 Dingle with 24.75" wheel = 70"
and 63"; with 17/20 Dingle, 70 and 60. If I were to use a 24 t cog on a S2,
that would give me a 50" low/direct and a 68" overdrive.

On the gofast, I've thought of installing a kickback with coaster brake,
since the gofast has only a front caliper. 46 X 15 = 76" on the "normal "
wheel, but with a 21t cog on the S2, I'd get a 54" direct and a 75"
overdrive high.

The S2, at least the non-coaster brake one, weighs about the same as the
S3X.

I probably would have been better off with S2s than the S3X.

Re: [RBW] Surly Dingle Cog Discontinued

2018-01-12 Thread Patrick Moore
As Philip said, you don't shift as with a usual multiple gear system, but
only for hills long enough to make it worthwhile. Personally, I use the
bigger of the 2 cogs very rarely, but when I do, they're useful -- eg, one
ride involves a ~ 3-4 mile climb; another a 5-6 mile climb; those make
stopping to shift, even stopping to flip a wheel around for a cog on the
other side of the hub, worth it.

You can't use any derailleur with fixed cogs (one exception) because the
momentum of the wheel/cog if you should stop pedaling to keep the ring
strictly in time with the cog will make the chain wrap up on the cog, and
if you stop pedaling fast enough long enough or suddenly enough, the chain
will yank the rd up and break it, in the same way that getting a stick into
the derailleur will break it.

There was a German rd in the 40s or 50s that could handle 2 fixed cogs if
they were no more than 2 teeth or so apart; the slack takeup requirement
was so minimal that the rd could be designed to withstand the chain wrapup
forces. At any rate, that was the idea -- it didn't last, so maybe it
didn't work.

Usually when they ship something to me I check the tracking and upsfedex says
that a label has been created and upsfedex is waiting for the items to be
picked up or arrive at their facility. So sounds like it hasn't physically
shipped yet.

But it's great that Rivendell packs it and contact the shipper so fast to get
the ball rolling. Rivendell definitely does everything they can on their end
to ship quickly. Some companies it takes days for them to even get it to that
point so you lose more time that way. It's nice that Rivendell does everything
ASAP.

Re: [RBW] Surly Dingle Cog Discontinued

2018-01-12 Thread Philip Williamson
I'm a big fan of the dingle cog in practice. With two rings and a quick
release, you can manually shift very quickly by moving the axle and rolling
the bike. You'd only shift for long climbs or offroad riding.
You can't use it with a derailleur, but you could use a DOS ENO freewheel
with a derailleur.

Currently my Quickbeam has an S2 kickback hub, and my Ross has a single
fixed gear, but I'll keep the dingle cogs for the future.

[RBW] Re: Cumil the Peeper sold me a Canti-Sam frameset

2018-01-12 Thread Surlyprof
Having gone through the Sam/Joe debate when the Joe came out, I determined they
are pretty different bikes. I rode my canti-Sam up to Riv to compare it to the
Joe directly. I thought the Joe is heavier-duty than the Sam particularly at
the fork. The Joe handles much wider tires (which is what prompted my
comparison). Ultimately, I found the Sam was a bit lighter and lively feeling
(to me) than the Joe. They’re similar but I ride roads more than trails. If
that was reversed, I might have bought the Joe.

John

PS: I was surprised at a recent blug or blahg post that said they beefed up
Sam’s fork. That was where I noticed a big difference.

[RBW] Re: Matt from Crust - PLP Talks

2018-01-12 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

I plan on getting a Crust after my Atlantis dies. My Atlantis is now 20
years old and I love it. It may never die. However, I would like the option
of being able to run super supple 2.5" tires, disc brakes and braze ons for
bikepacking etc. I have dropped hints for Riv to make such a model, as I
would like to stay loyal to Rivendell.

[RBW] New Bike Syndrome

2018-01-12 Thread Surlyprof
I’m not sure I’ll be the support you need or want. Given that the Hillborne is
a great bike that you’d miss it more than the few hundred dollars you’d get for
it, I’d make it your lighter, go-fastish bike and make the Atlantis the handle
anything life throws at you bike. That would involve:
- assessing what Sam parts would be good on a stripped down road bike...
- assessing which parts are heavier duty and should shift to the Atlantis...
- order and replace the lighter parts on to the Sam while you wait for the
Atlantis...
- order and install the new and old parts on the Atlantis when it arrives...
- Sit back and marvel at yor ingenuity because you just diversified your bike
stable while only buying parts for one bike AND you were never without a Riv to
ride!

Of course the final step involves the panic-stricken period while you figure
out how to rationalize this insanity to your significant other followed by lots
of household chores, flowers, begging forgiveness and, maybe, some retaliatory
spending on their part.

Good luck and enjoy the ride (literally and metaphorically).

[RBW] Re: New Bike Syndrome

2018-01-12 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Well, I do know exactly of what you speak... I have a new Sam build coming
up and though I am mostly/somewhat/hopefully committed to using parts
already here - parts stash + parts from another build - I still find myself
looking, lusting and considering other things I see.

The good news is I have a pretty good collection of pieces and parts and if
I can just make myself use the crankset I have, versus the one that is
calling to me(!), and also forget about a new or different wheelset, and
the tires, and, well you see (and know!) how this goes.

I would have to say "good luck!" on keeping that up for six months!
Obviously the best approach is come up with a plan and just let it be...
The good news about bikes is you can change them later. In fact,
especially with a new bike, it is at times best to wait just to see how the
bike evolves into your riding and life, to live with the bike for awhile
and let it provide inspiration (or resistance) as to build directions.

But, I know... easier said than done.

Anyway, good luck and congrats on the future new bike!

The Dingle is one of these things I’ve suspected for awhile I would like in
theory but not in practice.

I could never get over the idea of having to stop and move the chain manually,
and I was never clear if this could be engineered to be used with a derailleur,
essentially giving you a geared fixed gear bike. The same goes for the White

Re: [RBW] Re: Dynamo Hubs

2018-01-12 Thread Jeffrey Arita
FWIW: I agree with Tim on the *early *edition of the Luxos U. I had
reliability problems with the remote switch and you had to be careful
cinching down the attachment bracket for the light to the bike (plastic
chassis). Can't speak to later generations. We do have two Schmidt Edelux
and they have been *very *reliable.

For our off-road touring bikes I decided to purchase Sinewave's 'Beacon.'
It is an LED light combined with their USB charger. Since the USB goes
both ways, one can power the headlight with an external battery (or via the
dynamo of course). It also has pigtails for a rear tail light. It ticked
off all the specs we were looking for. The unit is in an aluminum casing
and Sinewave says the internals are all expoxied. Haven't had a lot of
experience yet - we shall see. I will say we have had good luck with their
'Revolution' (separate USB charger device) through drenching rain on our
2016 TransAm.

The reason why I really like the Beacon is I can get away from the
'piggyback' connectors for the Schmidt dynamo. With a headlight and a
separate USB charging device, one needs to wire each of them up. The
piggyback connectors are very good and clever but it adds another failure
point. Even though I meticulously crimped AND soldered the wires to the
connectors, it is now one less thing to worry about in the middle of
nowhere.

[RBW] Re: NYC 5 Boro ride

2018-01-12 Thread Steven Seelig
David really said it right. I've done it twice on a tandem with my son,
now 8. First year we were in the first group to leave and it was great,
except for the pouring rain in 50 degree weather. Being in front really has
its privileges.

Last year we were in the back, and it is literally like being in the worst
auto traffic jam you've ever experienced, except on a bike. So the weird
thing was having to adjust your mindset away from being the free and easy
bike rider who is virtually never stuck in traffic, to the captive goofball
driving a car who is stuck in traffic. The only difference here is that
you cannot lament the fact that you were stupid enough to drive instead of
riding a bike to your destination. You are the car driver now, just on a
bike!

Then, after you get through all the traffic and into Brooklyn, there is the
final 7 miles or so on a highway, often riding into the wind. The carnage
of weekend and sometimes cyclists stopping and/or struggling was actually
quite sad. A lot of folks just aren't ready for a 35 mile ride.

My advice would be to park your car somewhere in Staten Island and take the
Ferry to the start line. That way, after you are done, you can just load
your bike and drive away. No matter what, you will have to wait to get on
the Ferry, so better to do that in the morning than in the afternoon when
tired and cold.

[RBW] New Bike Syndrome

2018-01-12 Thread Rusty Click
I am suffering from this condition, and wondered if it is normal. You see,
I've recently ordered a new Atlantis (62), and I find myself looking at
owners pictures of their builds, and obsessing over whether to have Riv do
a complete build, or move what I can from my '11 S. Hillborne (which will
have to be sold to slightly offset the new bikes expense) and only worry
over what will not transfer.

Why can't I stop looking at wheels, at handlebars, and brakes? I know I
have many months ahead of wading through the minutiae of all the choices to
be made, including the selling of my loyal Sam. Is this "Buyers Remorse",
or some other malady experienced by those of us waiting anxiously for a new
bike? I know I have at least 6 months of this torture/excitement to
endure, and don't know if I will make it through.

I consider all of you on this amazing site, a sort of support group for the
bike obsessed. I am one.

Dementedly Yours,
