Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone ride VO Quill Stem? pics? / Orange Appaloosa touch-up paint?

2022-10-23 Thread Jason Fuller
I found that the VO 31.8 2-bolt stem tended to slip at the clamp more than
any other similar stem, so I will stick to 4-bolt clamp for the removable
faceplate style going forward personally. Moreso than traditional single
bolt stems, even!

I like VO products but have a tough time justifying anything other than
Nitto for stems, to be honest

Re: [RBW] Your preferred handlebar for longer rides

2022-10-23 Thread Corwin Zechar
Late to the party - but

My favorite non-drop bars for any length ride are Albastache. Close second
are Mustache bars. Not much difference between the two. Albastache are a
little wider and have slightly less drop. I find it hard to tell the
difference when switching between bikes though. Mustache bars can be had
from suppliers other than Riv.

That is indeed a nice Quickbeam. Still shod with the original Suzue hubs.
Rich-built to boot!

Seems like the most reasonable deal in the best color.

[RBW] Video: Vintage lugged steel mixte restoration

2022-10-23 Thread st nick
Eric,
The SR mixture turned out really nice!Well done!
Your shop is also terrific.
I do my own wrenching but only dream of a well organized nice shop like yours.
I need to be inspired and get some organization going so I don't have to hunt
for tools when I need them.
I have a too tall 25" SR  road frame hanging in my garage. It looks well
constructed.
Last week I picked up, best I can tell,  a 1973 Nishiki Competition step thru
bikewith a swoopy style top tube.
I'm in process of making some changes such as the road bars to swept back bars,
changing shifters, levers, and a few other things.
It's a 22" frame so I can ride it fine with the seatpost up enough for my
saddle height.
I haven't seen many step thru style frames in a 22" but plenty of 19" ones.
It has a 21.1 stem.I'm trying to come up with a way to get the bars up higher.
There are clunky looking bmx stems that would work but I'd prefer not to use
one.
I've sanded down stems from 22.2 to 22 to work on older French bikes without
too much trouble but it would take a lot of sanding to get one to 21.1.
Thanks for sharing the bike build video.
I would guess she loves the bike.
I like seeing vintage bikes built up Riv like and back on the road.
Enjoy and safe riding,
Paul in Dallas Enjoyed a 40 mile ride today on my Sam Hillbourne.

Re: [RBW] Re: Susie / Gus questions

2022-10-23 Thread Paul Clifton
@frahm - Awesome shot. Looks like a fun trail. Where is that?

@Jason - The Knolly is definitely a fun bike, but I consider moving to a
hard tail all the time. I just don't get wild enough to take advantage of a
full suspension bike. I kind of think i would still like to have a bike
with some suspension in my stable. My shoulders are starting to feel the
trail a little too much these days, but hopefully some strength and
mobility work will sort that out. I definitely want to keep a bike around
for the occasional trip to the downhill spots, so I'll prob always have
something around with modern geo.

@rmrose
Handlebars - The bars I'm running definitely aren't straight, they just
aren't anywhere near as swept back as the Bosco. Tumbleweed Pursuader
 It's
50mm rise and 31 degree back sweep. It's also 800mm wide, which is too
wide. I'm about to swap them for Velo Orange Seine bars, are narrower (750
mm), have a little more sweep, and a little less rise. And I'll try Wavies
after that, but I think 660mm wide is too narrow, and they may have too
much sweep for my wrists ... We'll see. The main thing is that the Boscos,
even with a 110mm stem, hit my knees going around switch backs. I love the
upright position for cruising, but it just didn't work for trail riding. A
shorter stem and wider bars does change the handling a bit - It's a little
more responsive I'd say, so with the long stem and Boscos, the handling is
a little mellower and the bike swoops a bit more.

Tires - Yeah, G-one's are great! I've found that for me, aggressive tread
is really only necessary when conditions get a little sloppy, and we got
basically zero rain all summer, so I haven't needed it. We'll see what the
fall brings, but we're not supposed to ride muddy trails either - but
that's more like when the entire trail is just wet. When it rains two or
three days a week, there are always muddy spots a day or two after it
rains, but we've pretty much been cleared to ride at that point. Just not
like the 24 hours after a solid storm. Anyway, the 2.8's G ones grip every
bit of bone dry trail and rock I've thrown at them, and since I cruise on
this bike too, I like running the smoothest tire that gets the job done.
I'll prob try the Terravails eventually and I have some 57mm G one's to try
out as well, but changing tubeless tires is a PITA so I might dig up some
more wheels. My Knolly has pretty aggressive tires (Maxis Asegai in the
front) and it really digs in to the soft stuff and grabs the slabs, but I
haven't come close to washing out on the G Ones in the dry dirt or rocks at
all.

Saddle Height - My saddle in those photos is at about 68cm. My PBH is like
82cm, but I don't remember what shoes I was wearing when I measured it. My
saddle height for path cruising is about 71cm, but, like I said, I drop it
a couple CM for riding single track, and I don't always put it back up. For
the medium Gus, my saddle height is just slightly too low to run a
Carradice bag with a bagman rack, but it works great with a more typical
rear rack. It's also a little too low to run a standard medium size
BagsxBird saddle bag without a rack (I think).

I too spend time looking at my Clem L. It is a
handsome/pretty/sexy/striking bicycle. And, it rides so well! I honestly

In my eyes, the Clem L is a touch more brawny looking which I do like so
I'll go with the Clem L for the win. Rivendells and fall foliage are a

2022-10-23 Thread JAS
Kim,
I’ve got a Clem L; getting together for a Clem ride would be fun! I love
the French bakery in Olympia.

[RBW] Re: Which is the best frame size for me? Pictures

2022-10-23 Thread lconley
The AHH looks like too tall of a frame to comfortably straddle the top tube
when stopped and standing (given the seat heights) - it looks like a bike
that I would ride. Having a long torso and short PBH, I always rode frames
that were "too big" for me to get the handlebars up and further away. If
the straddle clearance is OK, then either bike is fine. The AHH would allow
you to get the bars higher more easily if that is important to you.
I am a sucker for the cleaner lines (less braze-ons) of the stays and forks
of the Romulus though.

Re: [RBW] Pair O’ Platys in the Fall Foliage

2022-10-23 Thread lconley
Nothing wrong with riding and enjoying a pretty bike. When someone tries to
convince me to get a carbon bike, I always want to say that life is to
short to ride an ugly bike, but I don't because that would be putting down
their bike, so instead I just say that I am too heavy to ride a plastic
bike.

I spend way too much time looking at my bikes. 40+ years ago, when I rode
my Masi to work and kept it in my office; I would sometimes just sit at the
desk and look at it.

Thanks for the replies. I guess the answer is... all of the above!

Billie, Choco, Albatross, Bosco, and some non-Riv options.

Jones Loop bars 66cm (adventure-style bar with a nice sweep)

I've also used Tosco / Bosco style swept-back bars, but like you,
around 30 miles and I start to wish I had a different position.
