Re: [RBW] Re: Hetres are done. The search continues.

2013-11-29 Thread Chris Cullum
I think it really depends on the terrain. Jan mentions that GB tires are
just not appropriate for jagged rocky terrain like shale for example. I
have been really happy with mine. I'm at over 10,000km on a set on all
manner of rough terrain, wet commuting etc. Very few flats too. This is
definitely a YMMV. I am a bit leery of the GB EL version for mixed terrain
however.

The sizing chart is on vintagevelos.com. It lists chest size as 40-42" for

[RBW] FS: Rivendell All-Rounder 59cm

2010-08-20 Thread Chris Cullum
OK, this one hurts but I really don't use it enough to warrant holding
on to it...

Rivendell All-Rounder, Joe Starck built, Joe Bell paint burnt orange
with cream headtube

59cm C-T, 57cm top tube, 44.5cm to centre of horizontal dropout
chainstays, 2 deg upslope to top tube, IIRC 72 deg parallel seat and
head tube angles, standover mid top tube is just under 33" or 83.5cm,
3 water bottle braze-ons, huge tire clearance (26" 559 wheels size)

Nitto Frog seatpost, Brooks honey B17 saddle, Nitto Tech Deluxe 110mm
stem, Nitto Noodle 46cm bars with shellacked blue cateye cloth tape,
Tektro levers and mid-profile Shimano XT cantis with KoolStop salmon
pads

Shimano Ultegra 8 speed barcons, XT front and rear derailleurs, XTR
M900 cranks (the ultimate) with 46/36/26t rings, UN7x 107mm BB, 12-28
XTR cassette, Sram chain

Wheels: Shimano XT 32h 737 hubs, Bontrager Mustang rims, Wheelsmith
14g db spokes, handbuilt Mark Garcia, Ritchey Tom Slick 1.4" folding
Kevlar bead tire, I can include some extra NOS Michelin Hi-Lite Comp
1.75" folding tires with light tread (similar to a CdV)

Bike is in great shape and shows virtually no wear. There are a few
paint chips (not many the paint is very good) that have been touched
up with matching paint.

I got this bike off the list about 5 years ago and haven't really used
it much. Most of what I have done is upgrade the parts, switching out
the Moustache bars for Noodles and a longer stem and putting on the
XTR M900 crankset among other things.

Photos:

Asking $2500 (a new Riv custom frame and fork only starts at $3000USD, $3300
next year).

I'm in Vancouver, Canada but if shipped to the US I will ship from WA state.

The 4 largest cogs are on 2 seperate Alu carriers iirc. Those cogs are
titanium. The rest of the 5 are loose steels cogs. It might be the biggest
5 cogs on 2 carriers I'd have to look be sure. That would leave 4 loose
cogs of course.

You can always put a bigger loose cog behind the stack with an appropriate
spacer and pull one cog from the loose cogs. Or swap the 12t starter cog
for a 13t.

[RBW] Re: [BOB] Trade? 115 mm Phil for 103 mm Phil?

2014-05-08 Thread Chris Cullum
The DA 103mm BB is a cartridge model. The spindles are so short that it is
unlikely that a cup and cone type would fit anyway.

I have one but I'm not sure I'm willing to sell as I know I will need it
shortly afterward...

In addition to the DA, which is hard to find, and Phil Wood, Tange and
Sugino make a 103mm JIS cartridge bb that are relatively easy to source.
The Sugino Messenger crank also takes a 103mm IIRC which makes finding
these a little easier than a few years ago. Shimano no longer makes them
that short.

I have done it. As long as it's a thick Al spacer it works fine. Drill,
tap, install threaded bell. Repeat as necessary.

I did it on a headset brake cable hanger when there was no space for a
separate threaded spacer. No problemo.

[RBW] Re: [BOB] FS: Coho Frame/Fork/HS + Extras (Reduced Prices)

2015-06-12 Thread Chris Cullum
I don't know if Joe has sold this but I can vouch for what an excellent
rando bike the Coho is. I have a similar one and it's been absolutely
great. Understated but all the right moves.

Don't make Joe resort to eBay! Joe you might try posting on the randon list
as well.

[RBW] Re: [BOB] Advise me: what powdercoat color for Riv #2, the '99 Joe Starck gofast?

2018-02-09 Thread Chris Cullum
The Riv certainly has nicer paint than a powder coat will be. If it were me
I might just do a contrast panel on the seat tube due to the addition of
bottle bosses, likewise on the rear dropouts. Especially so because you
don't care to change the colour substantially.

I rather think I'll choose the same navy blue, but I recall the Herse that
this shop did -- a really lovely, "liquid" pale blue. I *do not* intend to
choose orange or green or gray or black or white. But shades of blue, red
-- other ideas?

Patrick Moore, who reserves the right to ignore any and all advice (but who
will certainly listen to it with interest and gratitude).

Here is the bike in current colors -- bar tape is more of same -- if not
current build:

[RBW] Re: [BOB] Advise me: what powdercoat color for Riv #2, the '99 Joe Starck gofast?

2018-02-09 Thread Chris Cullum
Yes, I meant to specify a paint match on the dropouts as opposed to a
contrast. The dropout area is relatively inconspicuous and a slight
mismatch will be not super obvious. They are also subject to chips etc from
wheel removal, chain drop etc. From my experience powder coat is never as
nice as good wet paint, let alone Joe Bell paint. It's less of an issue
with tigged or fillet frame but those lugs certainly warrant the deft touch
of JB. I'm partial to blue bikes and it's a pretty fetching combo you have
already. If you powder coat you're going to lose the original Riv decals
etc if that matters to you.

On Feb 9, 2018 21:37, "Patrick Moore" wrote:

Interesting idea; I certainly could get by with a st panel, but I think
that panels on the lower seatstays and aft chainstays would look weird.

I agree that the refinish will not be as nice as the Joe Bell paint but it
will be nice, and quite frankly, paint is rather low down on my list of
"must haves" for my bikes.

*And,* I recall that wonderful, deep, "liquid" powdercoat the man did for
the old Herse. Really pretty!
