[RE-wrenches] kW/MW v. kWh/MWh

2010-01-16 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
I'm reading a piece on energy storage in the latest issue of Distributed
Energy mag.

The writer, Lyn Corum, repeatedly refers to the capacity of storage mediums
(thermal, compressed air, flywheel, battery) in kW and MW terms.

Heck, even my friends at Beacon Power refer to their flywheel systems in MW
terms.

Am I missing something here? Shouldn't all references to energy storage be
in kWh and MWh terms?

Or am I experiencing a d'oh! moment?

[RE-wrenches] Rennsteig Crimper

2010-02-20 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Well, after reading all of those helpful posts, I decided to order two of
the Rennsteig crimper pliers for the MC4 connectors.

I purchased them directly from Rennsteig in Ohio for $225/each. MC wanted
close to $400 for their tool.

I'll let you all know what my guys think about using them.

On another subject, have any of you used the Schletter-brand mounting
hardware? Any comments?

[RE-wrenches] Volcanos and reduced solar production

2010-04-25 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Pat,

Kicked your butts as far as lower output? If so, by how much on a
percentage basis?

On the Big Island of Hawaii, we've had a very active volcano doing its thing
since 1983. With the normal trade winds, the vog (volcanic smoke + fog)
gets blown south past the volcano, around the south tip of the island and
then back up along the west side of the island. Which means that Kona-side
residents can be in a yucky vog zone for days and sometimes longer. Think
L.A. on a smoggy summer day. And as far as percentage decrease in solar
output, I really have little accurate clue.

[RE-wrenches] Volcanos, reduced solar production and kWh performance warranties

2010-04-25 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
This thread brings up a very timely issue that I’m dealing with right now with
PV Power Purchase Providers. As an integrator providing turnkey PV systems of
X kW, I’m being asked to contractually agree to a minimum performance warranty
for said PV systems. I am EXTREMELY uncomfortable to any such clause in any
contract that I would sign. I have strong confidence in my PV design
capabilities and engineering support and in my professional crew to install a
top-quality PV system. I have a lot less confidence in an inverter
manufacturer being able to get to a site on a Hawaiian island in the middle of
the Pacific in a super timely fashion as the lost PV kWhs rack up. And as I
mentioned in a previous post today, we have an active volcano here that’s been
spewing since 1983, a volcano that could get a lot worse on any given day. I’m
leaning strongly against agreeing to any such clause. Way too bad a precedent
to set. Way too much of a liability.

Anyone else had to deal with this bugger of a performance warranty demand?

Thanks,

marco

[RE-wrenches] Enphase performance

2010-05-10 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
I just don't understand why going over 20 percent of module nameplate to
nameplate inverter rating makes any sense.

I regularly see 120-130 percent of nameplate amperage coming off of the
array on our office due to edge of cloud.

So I have to disagree with Dana in this instance. I see this a bad design
especially since lower output mods are so readily available these days.

And what's up with the Enphase 210? Doesn't it say on their latest
compatibility list (March 2010) that it's only good for the Sanyo line?
What's up with that especially since I know that one other manufacturer is
signing off on using the Enphase 210 with their 210-watt module, apparently
with Enphase's approval?

Marv-why is your Enphase 210 only listed for use with the Sanyo line when
there's a growing number of 210+ watt mods out there these days?

Thanks,

marco

I've been concerned about pairing higher wattage modules (~230W) with the
190W Enphase fearing a lot of clipping and power loss when the modules are
at full power.

I did some modeling of this setup in PVSYST and found that the expected loss
from the inverter being underpowered is 0 - 0.2% annually depending on the
assumptions. The modeling was for northwestern Washington State. A fifth of
a percent seems pretty negligible to me and is easily offset by removing
module mismatch from the equation. So, I'm convinced that matching modules
in the 230W range with the 190W Enphase inverters is a good design.

I recently installed 4kW of 230s with the Enphase 190s and have seen their
output as high as 199W.

The over-reporting of energy that Randy refers to below was much higher than
any discrepancy based on monitoring resolution. We have a pyranometer at
the site, and Enphase reported energy production as high as 38% higher that
predicted from irradiance data, as well as 38% higher than the string
inverter portion of the same system. Individual microinverters showed
instantaneous power output as high as 285 W from a nominal 190 W unit.

Enphase explained that there was a software glitch that was resulting in
double counting. It took them over two months to correct this issue, time
which is lost from our experimental comparison of string vs. microinverter.
They indicated that this seemed to be an isolated situation, but I wonder
how many Enphase customers are reporting miraculous performance from their
system without verifying via another meter.

We definitely experienced an overstatement.

We have a client who installed 5kW on a string inverter and 5kW on enphase
and it is that side-by-side comparison that enabled us to positively
identify a problem. There was a significant overstatement of output. We
finally got a Enphase person who told us it was a software glitch. The
problem appears to be fixed. They explained to us that our problem was
isolated without giving us a detailed explanation of what happened. Since
that problem was fixed, we have seen no difference in output between a
string inverter and enphase.

Thanks for sending that link, William.

OK.let's try it from a different perspective.

When you're running, say, three three-phase hot conductors from point A to
point B with a neutral conductor, should that neutral be considered current
carrying from the perspective of more than three current carrying
conductors in a raceway? And thereby necessitating de-rating the current
carrying capacity of the hot conductors?

marco

Marco:

You have opened a can of worms. I hope you are happy!

Are you looking for the legal definition or to discover if the neutral
conductor actually carries current? The answer to the legal definition is
in 310.15(B)4 (2002), and the answer is: It depends (on the type of
service). This on-line article sums it up well:

How about some clear definitions-for-dummies of 1) linear loads and 2)
non-linear loads?

Marco:

Will non-linear loads be expected? If so, the neutral is considered to be a
current carrying conductor and needs to be counted. If no non-linear loads,
then the neutral is not counted.

Code citation below (2008):

310.15(4) Neutral Conductor.
(c) On a 4-wire, 3-phase wye circuit where the major
portion of the load consists of nonlinear loads, harmonic currents
are present in the neutral conductor; the neutral conductor
shall therefore be considered a current-carrying conductor.

[RE-wrenches] Aluminum conduit LBs

2010-08-14 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
The lesson was that even if, say, for a 2 ½ “ conduit says three 350 MCMs
are OK, that doesn’t mean that a 2 ½” LB I was planning on using is rated
for three 350s.

For the first time ever I saw printed in the LB itself the specified max
conduct size, in this case 4/0 for a 2 ½” LB.

So for this short conduit run I upsized everything to 3”.

I looked at the Thomas and Betts spec sheet kindly supplied by Ratico on
their LB offerings and there was no notation of max conductor sizes that I
could find.

marco

Marco,

I'm curious to know what you did after the hard lesson. Was it an issue of
difficult/impossible installation, or an AHJ issue? It seems like the most
straightforward solution in a situation like this is to replace your conduit
bodies (LBs in this case) with a larger size, and then install reducers in
order to leave the existing conduit runs intact. I'm looking at an upcoming
installation where I would like to use 1-1/4 EMT, but will need 1-1/2
conduit bodies to be ok with wire fill.

[RE-wrenches] phase rotation wiring

2010-08-21 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
There are two situations one can find when working on three-phase AC
systems: a clockwise or counterclock phase rotation.

Is it correct to assume that a CW rotation would be color-coded (for

say, red-black-blue?

Or whether it's a CW or CCW phase rotation, is the color coding always going

[RE-wrenches] The Demise of Reason, SunPower and WEEBs

2010-09-13 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
One point of clarification regarding SunPower Corp. and WEEBs having just
had communication with them today on this subject.

SunPower has yet to officially approve/sign off on the use of WEEBs with
their metal-framed modules.

They have been exploring the issue but have yet to give their seal of
approval on the WEEB as a grounding means for their modules.

marco

Hi Bill;

690.43 seems to practically spell out acceptance of the WEEB.
and then it cross references article 250.136A.

250.136 EQUIPMENT CONSIDERED GROUNDED
(A)Electrical equipment secured to and in electrical contact with a metal
rack or structure provided for its support
(Is it the undefined in electrical contact?)

Third, in the NEC 2008 hand book, Exhibit 250.53 shows several generic
(j-boxes, could be any electrical device?) mounted to a metal rack, with one
bonding jumper from the rack to ground.
It seems to make a case that we don't even need the WEEB, that star washers
on bolts to the frame would be acceptable, as long as the frame were
grounded.

On an Outback prewired powerboard (for example), all the equipment is
considered grounded (and passes as a UL assembly) simply by being bolted
altogether on a powder coated steel backing plate.
Is this also a voltage issue, for arrays over 250 v?

I'm sure I'm missing something.
I recall you once saying that UL doesn't even use the grounding hole when
testing modules, that they just clamped an alligator clip to the frame?

Thanks for giving us the NEC and beyond viewpoint,

Ray Walters

We need a more generic approach to grounding and that is what is currently
 underway.

Amen

Grounding and bonding is extremely important and jurisdictions are
focused on it for obvious safety reasons. We need solutions that are
clearly
reliable and straightforward so that installers and jurisdictional
authorities don't have to constantly be revisiting the issue.

 Bill.

Be a little bit more careful in your choice of subjects...?

I am shocked, shocked that you would use that tone with me.

If you would re-read my post, I talked about three things:

 (1) SunPower's no longer supporting the WEEB clip technology and
regressing
 to the ILSCO GBL-4DBT.

You are right about the insertion of the star washer between the lug and
module frame. I wonder what SP's response to that might be...

 (2) As for SP's comment that they pulled the WEEB clip, due to UL testing
changes. Does anyone close enough to the situation know what this means?

 (3) I never mentioned the SP IFF clip. I mentioned the Tyco SolKlip.

SP mentions the IFF in their literature but do not offer it to their
dealers
(as far as I know), and I haven't been able to find it yet in their
product
literature, except for a small low-resolution image. I assumed that the
Tyco
SolKlip was a different component -- however it may be similar or may be
rebranded by SP as the IFF -- I don't know.

Bonding PV arrays and their supporting structures is complicated subject
and
in my experience is one of the more frequently examined aspects of PV
installations by inspectors (along with bonding and grounding the other
components). So it would seem to be an apt subject for discussion by those
of us actively installing PV systems subject to inspection by the AHJ.

Be a little more careful in your choice of subjects. You are talking about
the SunPower IFF clip. I have not heard this story, but I don't doubt it.
There have been significant changes at UL and ETL, the two largest listers
of PV modules, in the area of evaluating grounding equipment for PV
modules.

Unfortunately, the shift to overly conservative approaches to module
grounding has caused huge problems with field installations. To make
matters
worse, installation manuals from PV modules have been required to get
extremely specific about the only methods allowed to ground and bond the
module frames. This conservative approach has shut the door on many
methods
that are far superior to the methods shown, because of the cost of

[RE-wrenches] fewer wires, mo bettah?

2010-09-20 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Check this out.

Four series strings of mods on a same plane roof feeding a larger Sunny Boy
or Fronius inverter.

Four #10 conductors for the ungrounded, fused (at the inverter) conductors.
And for the grounded conductor, a single, common, larger conductor from
those four strings.

So instead of four pairs of wires, or eight total, I'm using just five (plus
ground).

Assuming that the larger grounded conductor is adequately sized taking into
account conduit fill and temp derate for exposed conduit, does anyone see a
problem in doing this?

I've already been doing this for several years with no problems that I can
tell. But it occurred to me whether different resistances between the
ungrounded conductors and the grounded conductor might be an issue.

Feedback appreciated.

Thanks,

marco

Ah so….double-insulated is the key. I understand, Master.

I will get my peeps on it.

marco

It has to do with the development of a “double-insulated” conductor needed for
ungrounded systems. PV Wire is double-insulated while USE-2 is not tested as
double insulated. It is analogous to double-insulated tools in the U.S. that do
not require a ground wire.

Re: [RE-wrenches] insolation v. actual output

2010-10-12 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Yeah, but I'm looking for the equation as to how you get to that 75-80
percent figure.

marco

Marco

I use 75% as a general rule, it seems to work out well. I've gotten upwards
of 80% on certain enphase sanyo installations.

That is, I'm looking for that equation which estimates the losses due to mod
mismatch, soiling, wire losses, etc., etc. I've got someone who mistakenly
expects their PV array to put out 90 or more percent of the STC rating.

[RE-wrenches] SolarWorld 245

2010-10-13 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
SolarWorld is pushing hard its 245-watt module with the claim that it has
won the Photon mag module competition in 2008 and 2009 (compared to several
other manufacturers).

I can send the spec sheet to anyone who wants it. It states on the front
page: SolarWorld only delivers modules that have greater than or equal to
the nameplate rated power. (emphasis added)

This implies clearly to me a minus zero percent power tolerance.

And then you look at the finer print on page 2 and see under Power Tolerance
: +/- 3%*

*Only modules with flash-tested or = Pmax are delivered. Linear warranty
guarantees Year 1 module output to or + 97% or Pmax.

I'm confused. Does this mod actually have a -0 PT or not?

And on another note, are many of you finding it difficult to get an adequate
supply of PV mods to meet your demands these days? SolarWorld, Schott,
Sharp and Kyocera seem to be in short supply these days out in these here
parts.

Thanks,

marco

[RE-wrenches] AC voltage in North America

2010-10-18 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
I just don't understand it.

Lots of people-from reporters to homeowners-consistently refer to the AC

Where does this come from?

If North American utilities were putting out power at that voltage range,
they would be in serious trouble.

[RE-wrenches] warranty liabilities

2010-10-31 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
In places like California, and other states as well I'm sure, a PV
integrator needs to provide a bumper-to-bumper system warranty of what? 10
years.

I'd like to know if many, or any, of you all put aside any money to cover
your future warranty liabilities. (I don't.)

My belief is that we as an industry-at least as far as the large majority of
us who are independent small companies-don't have a clue when it comes to
calculating what our present and future exposure is as far as warranty
liability issues.

Having gone through the boom and bust of the solar thermal business in CA.
in the late 1970s and early 1980s, there were tons and tons of orphan
systems that had been supposedly covered by warranties by companies that
were long gone. Makes we wonder how close or far we are these days to a
similar situation.

[RE-wrenches] feed-in imbalance

2010-12-10 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Now that SMA has come up with their new 8, 9 and 10 kW transformerless line
of single-phase 120/208V inverters, it brings up the question once again
about how practical and wise it is to have one or two of these inverters
feed into a three-phase service. That is, is such an unbalanced feed much,
if any, of a big deal?

I spoke to my consulting E.E. about this and he said that the large majority
of utility-provided transformers are so large these days that an unbalanced
feed of, say, a 10 kW inverter that only has output power through L1 and L2
should not present a problem.

Any other thoughts out there on this matter?

[RE-wrenches] Enphase and oversizing

2011-01-15 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
To those of you installing Enphases.

Other than their 210 only working with Sanyo and SunPower modules, the vast
majority of other mods only work with the Enphase 190.

Question: what's the max size module that you're comfortable using with the
Enphase 190?

In there here parts I'm seeing competitors pairing the Enphase 190 with
modules in the 230+ watt range. Some are even pairing the 190 with the
SolarWorld 245. Talk about wasting the customer's money..

This strikes me as a bad design that essentially has the homeowner throwing
away some of his/her money on unused PV horsepower. Here in the tropics,
where the edge-of-cloud effect can be seen on a regular basis, I see DC
nameplate AND higher coming out on the AC side of my systems.

I'm wondering where others are on this question of oversizing.

marco

Those three models definitely should NOT be used with SunPower modules due to

Re: [RE-wrenches] Solmetric SunEye upgrade?

2011-02-11 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Yes, very sensitive to nearby EMFs.

And the bugger mistakes clouds for shading!

marco

Wrenches,
I'm considering upgrading my old SunEye 100 to the model 210 this year. Even
with the trade-in credit, the 210 costs more than the original SunEye did.
I'm interested in hearing from those of you who have taken this step. Is it
worth it? What are the most significant benefits to you?

While we're on the subject of the SunEye, let's talk about some of the
tricks to using this tool. I've found the built-in compass to be very
sensitive to nearby metal, even nails under comp shingles. I find it more
accurate to get the orientation of a site from Google maps and the azimuth
angle finder on the Solmetric website:
http://www1.solmetric.com/tools/RoofAzimTool.htm

Then I update the azimuth angle in the software to the accurate measurement
from Solmetric/Google, but it's still a tedious process to get the tool
oriented as accurately as possible on site. That's part of why I'm
interested in the 210, because its more rectangular shaped body would be a
bit easier to orient on site with a protractor if the magnetic compass is
having fits. Am I being too fussy with this? As I see it, a 10-degree
azimuth error will throw off your shading analysis enough to be significant
in certain scenarios, e.g. does the shade from that tall tree stop at 9am or
10am?

Regards,
-Hans

I use them to attach ProSolar al. mounting rails directly through roof metal
and into a 14g or 16g z-bar purlin.
(I use a 1/4-thick hypalon rubber pad to separate the rail from direct
contact with the roof.)

Does anyone have a source for stainless steel, self tapping Tek screws? I
could use some #10/3-4 and #10/1-1/2. If they have the little cap and
neoprene washer that would be even better!

[RE-wrenches] Mounting system for array on a metal roof

2009-03-14 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
In Hawaii, we have a lot of steel-framed buildings with z-bar steel purlins
supporting the metal roof. My attachment means of choice is using T-5
screws (#12 x 24 threads per inch). These buggers are self-drillers with a
carbon steel shank and drill point and stainless steel hex head cap with
rubber grommet. With a screw gun, you can actually zip these puppies
through your Pro Solar rail, through the roof metal and through the z-bar
purlin without the need to pre-drill. I use two screws per attachment
point. I've had this method studied by licensed structural engineer and he
has given me the thumbs up. Between the rail and the roof metal, I use a 2
square by 1/4 thick piece of Hypalon rubber to act as a dielectric between
the al. rail and steel roof.

I get the T-5 screws from Dynamic Fasteners and the Hypalon rubber strips
from MacMaster-Carr.

pull-out strength in the steel we were using (it varies with the gauge of
the purlin steel) per screw. (This is from memory and may be off.) We used a
single Tek screw per L-foot, with a 2 square of sealing bitumen membrane
under each foot, plus caulk after setting the screws.

Test your red steel for workability. Try to drill holes in an accessible
spot. See if this might work for you.

Re: [RE-wrenches] sales to-date

2009-05-31 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Travis,

Given the high cost for electricity here in Hawaii and both the federal and
state tax credits available here, we've had a pretty solid 2009 so far and
been at about the same revenue level as last year. We're a very small
market out here compared to other states. And we're starting to see more
areas of the grid where the utilities are saying that they have reached
their comfort level as far as installed PV kWs, which means that no
additional PV systems may be installed in those areas without expensive
(e.g., in the $30K range) interconnect studies being performed.

marco

U...Marcowe're you going to share your numbers :)?

A few months ago our gross sales were down nearly 70% compared to the same
period the year before. But 2008 1st 2nd quarters we're some of the best
we'd ever had the last 15 years.

We've since landed some good sized jobs (for us anyway) and are now down
less then 30%. We might catch up by the end of the year but I'm certainly
not in a panic if we don't. I'm enjoying the lighter work load plus net
profit is noticeable higher which I suppose is all that matters.

[RE-wrenches] Chinese solar cells and modules and pricing

Joel,
Since late last year we've been stocking the Yingli 175w single-crystal
modules. They seem dependable, haven't heard of any problems with them.
Earlier in the year they were a low-cost choice for very cost-sensitive
projects, but they were a 1st choice for very, very few dealers. Lately,
with all PV prices tumbling, they've been even less attractive. I think the
immediate future for Chinese modules will be developing country projects,
and very large projects where price points matter more than a dependable
track record or possible warranty service in a decade or two.

[RE-wrenches] Solar Installers Education

2009-07-19 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
I second a lot of what Peter says. And believe that it ain't gonna get
nuttin' but worse over time as grid-tie PV becomes more mainstream. I think
it's pretty much inevitable that a serious fire or two or serious injury or
death or two due to incompetence and a poorly installed system is gonna
whack us all over the head one day soon.

In Hawaii, by law, there's no such thing as a legal owner-builder PV system.
Only licensed electrical contractors (C-13) can legally obtain the necessary
electrical permits in Hawaii's four counties to install PV systems. (We
have a specialty Solar Power Systems license, but it's a joke and does not
carry any mango juice with the state's electrical departments.)

But that has not stopped a tsunami of sometimes well-intentioned,
often-times grandiose thinking local and Mainland yahoos from leaping into
the PV market peddling their _-brand cheep-cheap modules in this
frantic race to the price and quality installation bottom.

More education and training is desperately needed. I know that Ezra and
our NABCEP amigos are doing their best, but I have to say that I've been
shockingly disappointed with those eager people with their NABCEP entry
level certification in hand hitting me up for a job. 'Kinda like offering a
diploma to a kid graduating from kindergarten..

I also very much appreciate Bill Brooks, John Wiles, Keith Cronin, my
friends at various IBEW chapters and others who are doing what they can to
accelerate the process. But I have a queasy feeling that we're falling
behind. In the 30+ years I've been in the field, nothing can take the place
of experience in the field. (And I'm still learning each and every day and
with each and every installation.) And I just don't see the numbers out
there as far as enough trained and PV-competent people in the field.

Joel,

As a friend, I have enjoyed your perspectives on our business, even though I
usually don't agree with everything you say. I have never taken you to task
in a public forum, but I can't let your latest post go without comment.

There is a reason we call these guys DIYs. They have no experience and
limited knowledge; in other words they are not professionals. And, by the
way, what do you mean by so-called professional. I can't believe you tell
some one who wants to get into the solar business to first put one on their
home as a DIY. Could you in good conscience recommend someone who has never
stepped foot on a roof in their lives to spend a week on one in 90-100
degree weather, in physical contact with modules and other components that
are cooking at 145 degrees, and DC voltages approaching 600 V? Squinting at
a layout/schematic the likes of which they have never seen before? Someone
who hasn't used anything more than an 8 ft step ladder or doesn't know what
a safety harness is?

You also oversimplify: an appropriate apprenticeship for an installer is not
the same as that for a design engineer or a salesperson.

You don't need to have installed the PV system you own to appreciate how it
works.

I am personally aware of three DIY solar projects as well as a dozen or so
contractor-installed systems that we have been called out to troubleshoot
and fix. Even the best DIY project was worse than worst contractor-installed
job.

All,

But here is my main point. I have a pretty good test of what is key in this
PV business of ours. I get a call at least once a week from some one who
wants me to help them with a PV installation. In addition to DIYs, I get
these calls from B and C-10 contractors, facilities managers, apartment
owners, and the like. They will take care of [fill in the part that they
think they have covered] and they only need help with [fill in the part they
need help on].

They usually have spent some time on the internet and have an idea of what
modules to use and have teased a quote out of a manufacturer or distributor
for 5-50 kW of PV; they usually have some un(der)employed electricians who
can read a blueprint, bend and hang conduit and pull wire.

What they don't know is how to

(1) Specify an appropriately sized system

(2) Design a system (panel orientation, shading, structural calcs,
string sizing, ampacity calcs, over current protection, grounding),

(3) Specify all the speciality BoS components or where to buy them.

(4) Put together a permit package (that will pass ARB, Planning, Safety
and Fire department muster)

(5) Perform the mechanical side of the installation (read roof
penetrations)

They usually know about the 30% ITC (or grant) but they just need a little
help with the rebate application, which usually means they have some un(der)
employed back office

[RE-wrenches] Enphase track record

2009-11-07 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Can anyone think of a more brutal environment for a piece of electronic
equipment than under a solar module which day in and day out experiences the
elements and temperatures of 130+ plus F?

Despite any so-called accelerated life-cycle testing and estimated mean time
to failure probabilities, nothing takes the place of actual time cooking
under solar arrays.

Having seen my fair share of controller and inverter manufacturers come and
go out of business in 30+ years in the RE field, I'll be watching with great
interest the great Enphase experiment unfold.

And ever heard of the word recall? Swapping a central inverter or two is
one thing. Imagine doing it with the X number of microinverters you
installed six months or two years ago...

But hey, other than my Eeyore-sounding words above, aren't Enphase inverters
so cool with all that they can do?

marco in Hawaii

A while back there was a discussion about the reliability of Enphase
inverters. As I understand, they have been selling like hot cakes, so a lot
must be installed. Some sort of track record must be emerging.

Has the promised reliability of these inverters been met? Can they be
connected to a rail, under a large array without worry that the unit will
need to be dug out and replaced? Should the inverters be located in an
attic or other accessible location.

Thanks,

[RE-wrenches] peformance matters

2009-11-10 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
The common metric for many consumers when considering a PV system purchase
is the $/watt cost of the installed system. This misleading metric allows
low-priced bottom feeders (those licensed and unlicensed contractors working
out of their garage or storage spaces) to clobber those of us who pay all of
the taxes and insurances and infrastructure costs to run a brick-and-mortar
operation with employees, etc.

But when it comes down it, what really matters to the consumer is not the
$/watt installed cost but the kWhs produced by the system over time. For
what good is a cheap PV system if its output is poor?

Our focus as PV integrators should instead be to emphasize the superior
performance of our offered products, as in kWhs produced.

To that end, where can we go for objective performance data comparing brands
X, Y and Z in monitored side-by-side testing over time? Ideally if we had
multiple sites worldwide, with multiple climate conditions, we would be able
to see whether a 2 kW array of brand X put out more power than brand Y.

Can anyone point me to readily available data comparing the performance of
the major mod manufacturers in side-by-side testing?

Gracias amigas y amigos,

Marco

Re: [RE-wrenches] performance matters

2009-11-10 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Hence the need to be able to present objective, 3rd party-collected
performance data demonstrably showing the superior performance of one brand
over another.

Good point, but how does a consumer quantify the expected long term harvest
and reliability of a solar electric system? Smooth talking sales people
will assure customers that the lower priced system is of equal value as the
name brand system offered by an established installer.

[RE-wrenches] Fronius IG Plus line

2009-12-17 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
I have yet to install a Fronius IG Plus inverter. Looking through the
manual I'm trying to determine whether each inverter in the line, between 3
and 12 kW, puts out three-phase power across all three poles, L1, L2 and L3
or whether all or some of these models put out power across just one or two
poles like the SMA Sunny Boys.

I'd appreciate any education on this.

Thanks,

marco

[RE-wrenches] Andalay and Lowes

2009-12-19 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Mr. Cinnamon's company, Akeena Solar, has accumulated over $48 million in
losses from 2006 through Q3 2009, according to public documents since
they're a publicly-traded company (http://ir.akeena.com/annuals.cfm).

He now apparently believes that he can turn a profit by commodifying PV
through his Andalay product line and having Joe Blow homeowner pick up an
Andalay package or two or ten at Lowes, essentially bypassing licensed solar
or electrical contractors and slap those puppies on the roof himself. As
long, of course, he's safety conscious about getting up and down the ladder.

I fully agree with brother Jeff Wolfe's observation: You put solar panels
on your roof without a permit, bad things happen to you.

One thing is virtually certain: come Monday morning we're going to be
getting calls from Joe B. asking for help to figure out what he did wrong or
that he got a nasty zap and doesn't want to get back on that roof...

This article in the Cape Cod paper floored me, especially with this quote
It's really not a big deal, said CEO Barry Cinnamon. The most dangerous
thing is learning about ladder safety.

[RE-wrenches] Enphase 215

2011-05-19 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Anyone know what the max rated output of the his new bugger will be?

For the Enphase M190 it's 199 watts and 219 watts for the M210 according to
our inphase Enphase friends.

I'm wondering if the new M215 will also have some higher than nameplate max
continuous rating.

[RE-wrenches] Enphase 215-2

Anyone make sense out of this from the M215 spec sheet?

This model would seem to be able to accommodate a wider range of 200 series

And yet how will the 215 perform with those modules which have a MPPT
voltage from 37-45 since that range is beyond the state peak power tracking

[RE-wrenches] Tigo to go?

What's the feedback on these Tigo buggers? I'm not talking about sites

[RE-wrenches] Tigo to go?

2011-06-09 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Nowhere close. I'm not a believer in using micro inverters for large
commercial projects. Plus, I'm pushed to the limit on this particular
project to keep the costs down in order to satisfy the PPA investors.
Off-line I'll tell you what I'm charging. I never thought I could/would go
that low. But our industry (and I've been in the RE biz since the late
1970s) has been taken over by bean counters, financiers/bankers and lawyers.
(Sorry, Michael..)

marco

Marco,

I understand that the cost of electricity in Hawaii is pretty high so cost
can be justified. But don't forget the cost of bolting up each optimizer.
And the cost of doubling the number of cable connection, now and possibly in
the future. Complexity increase cost in the long run?

How closely have you looked at this? It looks like the Tigo is already about
1/4 the cost of an Enphase. So how close are you to moving from an optimizer
/ inverter combination to a microinverter?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Enphase 215

2011-08-24 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
According to my discussions with Enphase on this subject, the M215 can
actually put out 225 watts continuous.

Marv? Please confirm.

marco

The inverter should be current-limited on its output. The other Enphases
have a higher output power than rated (199 @ 190, 219 @ 210, if memory
serves from earlier list posts), so this may have a similar window.

215Wac max inverter output / 240V = 0.896
0.896 x 17 = 15.23A
15.23A x 1.25 20A so it's OK.
As long as the inverter output is actually 225W or less, you can fit 17
on a 20A circuit.

As before, you'd have the inverter limiting output when the high-power
modules are actually performing near or above STC. There will certainly
be times during the year where the inverters are maxed out but those
times will be a small portion. Enphase had some documentation on their
site about this where they claimed it wasn't worth worrying about, but
it's a site-specific question that the installer should answer.

On 2011/8/24 0:20, Keith Cronin wrote:
 Hey gang

With the 215's on the scene and the tech literature on their website,
they state you can put up to 17 modules on a string.

Locally, I see folks throwing on 17-235 watt modules. Back of the
 napkin- 235 watts/240 volts = .97 amps.

17 x .97 = 16.49 amps on the 20 amp circuit. Pushing the envelop of the
circuit, per NEC and in situations of lower voltage, could tip the
current higher, per module it seems or is the unit current limiting?

Wouldn't it seem plausible to ebb on 16 vs the 17? The 15 amp circuit to
20 amp circuit also is a change for the industry at large, as well as a
 few other changes.

As Solarworld is rolling out their 250 watt and others in the same zone,
it seems there should/could be some caveats on the enphase literature to
 reflect this.
 Thoughts, comments?

[RE-wrenches] quite the conundrum

2011-09-08 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
In 2008, about 200 Net Energy Metered systems went in on this Big Island of
Hawaii, where I live. About 400 in 2009 and over 800 in 2010. The same
increase in adoption rates took place across the Aloha State.

I think that the next two years or so will bring a stop to this kind of
growth most likely because of the fed grant in lieu of tax credits very
likely going away come 1-1-2012 and a likely change to the HI. state tax
credits as well after this next legislative session as well as the continued
progression of our small island grids becoming more closed to PV due to grid
saturation issues.

Be that as it may, until there's a contraction in the PV biz in our Aloha
State (not a question of if but when), we're going to continue to be in an
insanely competitive sales environment.

My commercial sales these past 9 months have been kinda light and I'm
bothered by that. Our standard approach is to always offer the highest
efficiency mods from Brand X. But we've been losing sales to others who are
undercutting us by as much as 30 or more percent. No surprise, really,
since these mods are so much more than pretty much the rest of the market,
aside from Brand Y with its HIP and HIT lines.

I've resisted going all in or even mostly in as far as getting container
loads of good quality Chinese mods as we've been hyping ourselves as
providers of the highest efficiency production mods on the planet along with
our solid econoline of U.S.-made mods with a minus zero PT and flash test
data for every mod. But if you hit 'em with Brand X and they're not really
educated on Brand X nor asking for the best, any other quotes that they're
considering from others will make the Brand X quote look way high. And at
that time you can usually kiss the sale good-bye.

So I'm considering a substantial change in our approach to selling PV. Go
mostly Chinese, go low price to keep up with the competition, offer quotes
using Chinese mods as a standard matter of course and perhaps offer Brand X
on a more limited basis. It just seems to me that the commoditization of
the PV biz these days has most consumers concluding that price is the most
important factor whether the mods come from China, the U.S. or Timbuktu.

Let the fireworks begin.

[RE-wrenches] ARCO Solar and Carrizo Plain

2011-10-31 Thread Marco Mangelsdorf
Us old-timers remember the dismemberment of the then big ARCO Solar grid-tie
project down in So. CAL. In the 1980s and the parting out of that project in
dribs and drabs for years.

I was wondering recently with all these ever so big and getting bigger
grid-tie projects sprouting like mushrooms across the developed world: why
did ARCO Solar and the utility (PGE?) scrap the whole thing after a
relatively short period of time? Causes me to wonder about the fate of so
many of the mammoth projects now going in as far as what's going to happen
when the owner-investors likely bail, having made their handsome ROIs, after
the tax credits and MACRS depreciation plays out.

Thanks,

consultation with Enphase, replaced the M210s. After replacing them, the
power output was as it should be.

Now I've got another suspect system with several underperforming mods out of
(36).

Has anyone else had this experience?

Thanks,

marco
