Re: Setting Domain Name in Redhat

2002-05-19 Thread Jake McHenry

I just had a post running for about two days all about this...

It should be under HOSTNAME in /etc/sysconfig/network, DOMAINNAME doesn't
do anything.

HOSTNAME=pheonix.miller.com

nope, not in the config file, it's the system hostname and domainname. If I
set hostname to just the name, without the domain, the installer fails,
also, if domainname is set to none, it fails.

There is no config file to edit, it's a shell script you run that prompts
you for this info, if it doesn't match what hostname and domainname return,
then it craps out.

Re[2]: hostname and domainname from redhat list

2002-05-16 Thread Jake McHenry

It's the old version of mailstudio, we bought this license about two years
ago, it's been working fine. I initially installed it on 6.2. From 6.2 to
7.2, it seemed that when I would set the hostname and domainname by using
hostname name and domainname name, the settings would stay that way. But
now under 7.3, each time I reboot, it changes...

It doesn't tell me why it needs it, but it won't let me configure it
without these settings..

Hi -
I've been reading your posts on the redhat list.  I get
the list in digest mode, so I can't reply individually, but I thought I
would send you a quick note.

The "domainname" command has nothing to do with
DNS domain (like yahoo.com or whatever).  The domainname command, as
stated in the man pages, is for setting the NIS/YP domain name for that
machine.  The NIS/YP domain name is akin to the Windows NT
"domain" which has nothing to do with an internet/DNS/TCP/IP
domain.

As long as your hostname is correct, and you have the
correct domain entry in /etc/resolv.conf you are good to go.  Unless
you are running NIS/YP, and I didn't see anywhere in your posts that you
are, there is no need to worry about the domainname command.

There is no utility to change the domain part of a
FQDN.  You do that in /etc/resolv.conf.  So:
1. make sure output of hostname is correct
2. add "domain somedomain.com" to
/etc/resolv.conf
3. you're done
For example, I'm running numerous servers, and the output of
"domainname" on all of them is null, and I can assure you they
are all working correctly from an addressing standpoint.  I don't
run NIS or YP on any of my machines (LDAP is better).

Hope this helps.

Re: hostname and domainname

2002-05-15 Thread Jake McHenry

No, this doesn't help, I already looked at this... I can use
dnsdomainname to set it, it gives me this when I try...

dnsdomainname: You can't change the DNS domain name with this
command

Unless you are using bind or NIS for host lookups you can change the
DNS
domain name (which is part of the FQDN) in the /etc/hosts
file.

If I change anything with hostname and domainname, when I reboot it
goes back to the old values. This is what this whole post is
about...

Ok, I already had domain in /etc/resolv.conf

Still, when I reboot, when I type hostname, I get the host + domain name,
when I type domainname, still get (none).

dnsdomainname get's the domain name.

I guess if no one knows where this is stored, I can always put it in a
startup file.

I'm not using any type of X windows.

Ok, I changed the HOSTNAME in /etc/sysconfig/network, but the domainname
still sets to empty when I reboot the machine. At least apache isn't
yelling at me anymore about my fully qualified domain name. Will not having
domainname set to anything be a problem?

I use hostname (name) and domainname (name) and it sets it, but after I
reboot, they both change back to what they were before.

I don't have redhat-config-network on my machine.

Thanks,
Jake

hostname and domainname

2002-05-15 Thread Jake McHenry

Hi, everytime I reboot my machine, I have to reset my hostname and
domainname. When I reboot, my hostname get's set back to what it was when I
installed redhat, and the domainname goes to empty. I set them back by
hostname and domainname and it's fine then, but as soon as I
reboot or go init1, it goes back to the wrong settings. Where are the files
that I can manually change these entries?

Thanks,
Jake

hostname & domainname

2002-05-13 Thread Jake McHenry

Hi everyone, two questions...

Under hostname, should that just be the name of my computer, or the domain
also?

Under domainname, should that just be the domain or the host also?

Also, do I need anything in these? I'm only running dns, in the man pages
it says it's for nis or yp.

Thanks,
Jake

Linuxconf and 7.3

2002-05-13 Thread Jake McHenry

Hi, I just installed 7.3, everything going good so far, but I can't get the
hostname set correctly. What happened to linuxconf? I used that before to
set up the network info, but I can't find it on any of the cd's. What can I
use in place of linuxconf? I tried using just hostname and domainname and
dnsdomainname, but apache still says it can't determine the hostname and my
email isn't working properly.

Please let me know...

Thanks,
Jake

SED Question

2002-03-06 Thread Jake McHenry

Hey everyone, I am trying to make a "FROM" script
that basically shows the person running the script who the mail is from that
they have. Not very complex, but I can't seem to get it exactly how I want it.
Currently, it works fine, but it shows too much info. This is what I
have...

  cat /var/spool/mail/$uname | sed -e
'/[Ff][Rr][Oo][Mm]:/b' -e d

K, this shows all combinations of from:, which is
kind of what I want, but I only want the from: at the beginning of a email, not
all the from: in reply's etc...

Can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks,
Jake

Re: MySQL Question

2002-02-12 Thread Jake McHenry

This is exactly what I'm doing! Here is my query ..

select * from $dbtable where 1 and year = '$inyear' and month like
'$inmonth' and day = '$inday' order by time, ampm

And when I display the results, it is putting a event of 10:00 am or pm
before 2-9 am or pm. it's putting the 10 before all.

Here is a screen shot of the output..

  Time AM/PM Event Delete
  10:00 AM test
  10:00 PM test
  1:00 PM test
  5:00 AM test
  8:00 PM test
  9:00 AM test
  9:30 AM test

The way my calendar is set up depends on the individual month, year, and day
being pulled from the database. Then it pulls the individual days events and
displays them on the page.

MySQL Question

2002-02-11 Thread Jake McHenry

I know this isn't the right place for this, but I'm
hoping someone can help me out.  I have created a database, basically an
online calendar, and I have the following fields in my table..

id  int(10)  auto_incrementyear
int(4)month  varchar(10)day  int(2)time
varchar(5)ampm  char(2)event  varchar(255)

Where I'm running into a problem is on the output
screen. I've tried sorting by day, time, and ampm, and all of these, but I'm
still running into the same problem.
The problem is that an entry of time 10:00 am is
coming before 10:00 pm, it's because of the 1 in the entry, I think. Anyway, can
anyone tell me how I can get the entries to be listed in sequential order by
time and ampm?

I've also tryed putting the year, month, day, and
time into a datetime field, but I still have the same problem.

Thanks,
Jake

Re: Validating passwords via php, Lil help please! (Was with PERL)

2002-02-01 Thread Jake McHenry

Actually, take back that last email, newpass does seem to be working, just
don't know what it's doing, as the computer is just sitting there after I
put in newpass, I opened a new connection to the machine, and noticed that a
instance of passwd is running, along with poppassd. Interesting. So it must
be trying to change the password, right? Anyone know how to help out?

Thanks,
Jake

Re: Validating passwords via php, Lil help please! (Was with PERL)

2002-02-01 Thread Jake McHenry

Where did you find a rfc on poppassd? I've looked at www.rfc-editor.org, and
many others, and found nothing.

And, no, the newpass does not work, it just sits there, no response when I
telnet in.

Does anyone know what I can use instead of newpass?

Thanks,
Jake

Validating passwords via php, Lil help please! (Was with PERL)

2002-02-01 Thread Jake McHenry

K, this script uses php to access poppassd to change users passwords via a
form that I threw together quick, but there is a problem. The results of the
php is that it successfully changes the password, but it actually does not
change it. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to why this script
is not functioning for me?

# open a socket first

$cfgTimeOut);

if(!$poppass_handle) {
echo " Connetion to server failed .  ";

exit();

fputs($poppass_handle, "pass $curpass \r\n");

fputs($poppass_handle, "newpass $newpass \r\n");
$tmpc = fgets($poppass_handle, 3 );
$tmpd = fgets($poppass_handle, 3 );

That is basically what I have now to see if the user exists, but I can't use
this because I'm using shadow passwords, the only thing that is in position
2 of /etc/passwd is x. So, anyone know of any other ways that I can achieve
this? Thanks for the help though.

Validating passwords via perl, Lil help please!

2002-01-31 Thread Jake McHenry

Hello everyone, I'm working on creating a web-based password changer, but
have been having some trouble with the password verification process. I have
verified the the username entered is an acutal user on the system with
getpwnam($uname), and that works, but how can I verify that the old password
that they enter is correct? Anything would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jake

Yea, we are here at work. I don't know what happened before, it was just
downloading the header files, but not the actual RPM's. But it's working

up2date

2002-01-25 Thread Jake McHenry

Hi everyone, I've looked through all the emails on
my machine from this list, which spans back to around june of 2001, but havn't
found an answer to my question. I'm trying to update my machine with up2date. So
far, I have tried running it .. up2date -l -u    up2date -l
-i   up2date -f -l -u   up2date -f -l -i   and
each time, it downloads the header files, shows me the files that can be
upgraded, but doesn't actually do it. How can I get up2date to actually install
the updates? And the files it downloads are just the headers, not the actual rpm
files. Any answers?

Thanks,
Jake

Apache and user cgi-bin's

2002-01-22 Thread Jake McHenry

Hello everyone. I had my server set up before to
make it so specified users can have their own cgi-bin. I can't seem to remember
how I did it before. And stupid me, I didn't write it down. Here's what I have
so far...

Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes MultiViews  AllowOverride
None  Order allow,deny  Allow from
all

ScriptAlias /~jmchenry/public_html/cgi-bin/
"/home/jmchenry/public_html/cgi-bin/"

  Options ExecCGI
AllowOverride Options  Order allow, deny  Allow from
all

All that I am getting when I try to run the script
is the text of the file, it's not running any scripts.

Let me know what I'm doing wrong...

Thanks,
Jake

  Hi Jake,

By default sendmail in RH7 only listen on the
loopback device, you need to disable the following line in
  sendmail.mc

  DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1,
  Name=MTA')

then regenerate sendmail.cf and restart yrs
sendmail, then it shd able to receive all email...

  hope this will help...

CDROM Not Mounting

2002-01-13 Thread Jake McHenry

Hello everyone, I just got done installing RH7.2,
from a CD, and now that the install is complete, I can't mount the cdrom drive.
It just says ..

mount: /dev/cdrom is not a valid block
device

there is a sym link in /dev pointing /dev/cdrom to
/dev/hdc, which I also tried.

Upon bootup, it says my cdrom is hdc.

Can anyone help me get this thing
mounted?

Thanks,
Jake

Re: MySQL

2002-01-13 Thread Jake McHenry

Ok, well, it's not my choice. My boss told me on Friday that he wan't to be
using a MySQL database because it would be better. I don't ask questions.
Right now, the perl scripts that I have wrote, write all the info to a plain
text file. I know by using MySQL it would be more secure, but there are no
reasons that I know of why it sould be more secure. I have our network
locked down pretty tight, and the only people that have access to the actual
text file is my boss and I. If it would be easier to just stick with what I
know, perl, that would be great. When I compiled apache last time, I didn't
include any perl options, so would I have to recompile it to add the DBI
functions?

answers to questions ...

1) the user enters data (general info, cc #, flight plans, etc.) and it
writes it to a plain text file.
2) it's not using MySQL
3) Just so that it uses MySQL, all the data we currently have, and future
data, needs to be converted into a MySQL database.

Thanks,
Jake

Re: MySQL

2002-01-13 Thread Jake McHenry

Ok, I'll look into using my existing scripts, only adding the MySQL to it.
What will I need to change/add in the scripts to access the database? Will I
need to add any other packages? Currently, this is what I have installed...

perl-5.6.0-9
groff-perl-1.16-7
perl-DBI-1.18-1

MySQL-3.23.47-1
MySQL-devel-3.23.47-1
MySQL-client-3.23.47-1
MySQL-shared-3.23.47-1

Are there any docs on webpage scripting and MySQL? How do I access the
database from the webpage?

Thanks again,
Jake

Should I keep the perl-DBI rpm that I installed for this? Will I need it for
anything with PHP? Does anyone recommend any specific version?

Thanks,

Re: MySQL

2002-01-12 Thread Jake McHenry

Ok, I have DBI-perl-bin installed, from a rpm, if that helps. And, yes, all
connections are denied unless you specify the -u user and -p option. So that
is good.

If it would be easier to use PHP, what do I have to do to get that up and
running? Difficult? I know that's going to take a little time to learn, but
no biggie. Are there RPMS that I download for PHP, or do I have to recompile
apache, again? :)

Thanks for the help,
Jake

MySQL

2002-01-12 Thread Jake McHenry

Hello everyone. I am kinda disturbed about what my
boss wants me to do. I have spent the past 6 months creating a web-based
database all with perl scripts. It works great! But he now want's me to
convert it to MySQL. I have MySQL installed, up and running. I can connect to it
from the local machine.

The problem is, what do I do now? I've read
articles on using MySQL and PHP together for web access, but I don't have PHP
installed. How else can I access the database? Say maybe using
perl?

Also, something else, maybe this is supposed to
happen, when I type in the address, then the port for MySQL, it gives me this
..

LÿjHost 'winxp.ministang.com' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL
server

Is this supposed to happen? I think it is, because
it doesn't have a web server built in, right?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Jake

Re: FTPd problems

2001-04-24 Thread Jake McHenry

No, I don't think it's a DNS problem. DNS is working fine. I can telnet into the
machine fine. SSH works fine too. It's not a problem of connecting to the
machine, it's a problem with wu-ftpd. I'm sure it's not in DNS. Thanks for the
help, though.

Is there a c++ compiler in 6.2, and if there is, how do I get it to run? I have
RH7 at home, but I haven't tried to upgrade yet. Is there one in 7? Also, what
does the file extension have to be so the compiler knows it's c++. I know with
C, it is just file.c, is c++ file.cpp? That is what I have been trying with.
Here is what I have tried so far...

cpp file.cpp
cpp -lang-c++ file.cpp
gcc file.cpp
cc file.cpp

I know that gcc and cc doesn't like c++, but I'd thought I'd try it anyway. When
I run the cpp file.cpp or the second one, it displays what is in the file, but
doesn't compile anything, or atleast doesn't give me an output file.

for the program to keep running even after you log off, you need nohup before
the command. If you just use the &, it will put it in the background, but when
you log off, it will kill the process.

no big deal. Put in the new memory, powered back on. Bios finds all the memory,

Backspace

2000-09-19 Thread Jake McHenry

Does anyone know how to disable those ^H 's from showing when I hit the
backspace key? It is very annoying. If I make an error logging in, I have to
retype my username, instead of just backspacing to fix it. Also, it doesn't show
up on my other machines, just my new one, with 6.2. Those ^H also show up when I
make a mistake in mail. I have to ^C to get out and start over.

Thanks,
Jake

Apache problem

2000-09-13 Thread Jake McHenry

I have been configuring my new box and have been having some problems. Where
are the files that are called when linux boots? I know about the rc.d directory
and how that works, but I've looked all over for where the line
"/etc/httpd" is in the init files. I am moving all web stuff into /home/web and
when I do this, Linux still looks for the files in /etc/httpd.

I have to be missing something somewhere, but WHAT?

they are now?

6.2 FTP Install Directions

2000-09-11 Thread Jake McHenry

Setup a ftp server either on the windows box or on another linux box and point
it to the cdrom drive. I've found that it HAS to be an anonymous user with no
password, other wise it just says it can't find the files. Then you make a boot
disk from bootnet.img from the cd. Then boot the upcoming computer with the
bootdisk you just made. Do a text install, I tried a GUI install and it just
took me to text install anyway. Follow directions. It should automatically
detect your NIC, it did mine anyway. Just type in IP of ftp server and when it
asks you for directory, if your ftp'ed into the root directory of the cd, then
put . as the directory.

If I didn't explain good enough, let me know, I did this 3 times yesterday, I
thought it kept locking up, but it is just slow. Took 2 hours to do the install.
I have a 100 meg network between the two machines I was doing this with. The
problem was that the upcoming computer is kinda slow (16 megs of ram, 2 500 meg
harddrives, P75) The files were downloaded in an instant, but it took forever
for them to unpack and install.

Installing 6.2 via ftp [SOLVED]

This was a brainfart on my part. I just tryed what I thought would work and it

Worked great. Sorry for the post, I just wasn't thinking.

Installing 6.2 via ftp

2000-09-09 Thread Jake McHenry

I just got my new linux box and am eager to get things rolling. I was following
the list the past few days about installing without a cdrom drive. I have the
same problem. I've worked with linux for about 3 years now, and this is the
first time I'm installing other than with the actual cd. I saw in the list that
I can put in the cd and ftp from the installing machine. I have my ftp client up
and running and pointing at my cdrom drive, *note the machine with cd is win98*,
and can ftp in and see cd. Now my question is, something else I've never done is
boot from floppy, do I just boot from floppy and ftp to the win box? If that's
it, how do I start the install program? Sorry if this is an easy one. And please
get back to me soon, I want to get this thing running!.

Re: What architecture is an AMD k6?

2000-09-06 Thread Jake McHenry

Um, no it's not. If it was, you couldn't run windows or
linux on it. Windows and linux only run on the SIS
architecture. You are either running IBM AIX or MAC OS on a
RISC processor. Linux is for Intel based chipsets, ie.. SIS,
not RISC.

Ok, here ya go guys. This is what I put together for my users at work. Hope it

the perl script goes in your htdocs/cgi-bin directory. The index.html page you

Like I said before, it's quit simple. Hope it helps you in what ever you were

It is there, at the bottom of the page. I've used it already.
follow the link at the bottom of every [RHL] list post and you will get to the
page, scroll to the bottom and you will find a place, right below the admin
boxes, to put in your email address and it will send you an email with your
password.

what happened to [RHL]

2000-08-04 Thread Jake McHenry

Why did the subject attachment dissappear? I loved that, it let me know where
the message was coming from, because I'm on a lot of lists, and it really pops
out with [RHL] in the subject. I thought it was a good idea.

Re: ---- X server

2000-08-04 Thread Jake McHenry

Were there any posts to answer this? If there were, I didn't get them.
This happened to me at one point, I reinstalled and it fixed it, but I would
like to know, if there is one, another way to fix the problem.

Thanks,

Jake

Subject: [RHL] X server

Hi, there:
I have a question that Now I can only start x server
with root. When I login from the usual account and
type startx it give the following erron:
Authentication failed--cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console console ownership?
_X11TranSocketXConnect: Can't connect:errno = 111

give up
xinit: Connetction refused (errno=111) unable to
connetc to X server
xinit: No such process(errno 3): Server error.

Does anybody know how to handle this problem?

THanks a lot!

Nianwei

Re: Redirection of URL

2000-08-04 Thread Jake McHenry

Place this in your section of index.html on foo.com

http://www.foo.com/">

This will immediatly send the person trying to access the foo.com to www.foo.com

or you could set the "content=X;" value to a higher number for a delay, incase
you would want to post a redirect message to the people.

win telnet client for linux boxen & mc

2000-08-03 Thread Jake McHenry

I downloaded and tried putty, like someone said, but it doesn't seem to work. In
Secure CRT I connect to my SSH2 server, in putty it only has ssh, is that why it
doesn't work? When I run putty.exe, I put in the address to my box, and click
open, and a dos window pops up and goes away immediatly, and nothing happens
after that. I think I'm still going to stick with Secure CRT, since I've been
using it for about 2 years, and I bought it, and it works for me, without
problems.

I have always, and always will, use Secure CRT, from Vandyke Software. They also
have the regular CRT which is cheaper, but without the SSH support.

Problem with changing displayed names

2000-08-01 Thread Jake McHenry

I used to know how to do this, but have forgotten the what the name of the file
was that did this. As I've been cleaning my system of users no longer here, I've
been noticing accounts that name's do not match the login name. I know that
there is a file that allows anyone to do this, and I want to change the owner to
root, so only I can do it. Sorry if this is an easy one, but I forgot what is
was called.

Thanks,
