[Repeater-Builder] Crystals information.

2010-04-07 Thread Eric Vincent
Hello everyone,

I'm wondering if I can use crystal from a UHF Micor repeater to a MSR2000?
Are they operate on the same harmonic?

I know the chanel element are different, I would like to swap the crystal.

Thank you for your help.

Mike,

To let you know that is $19.95 each xtal, $40 + ship for a pair. Bomar
has $50 min.

All you need is the radio type, freq, where to ship and method of
payment. They accept credit cards.

Good luck in making your change.

ICM is still selling crystals. they make an excellent xtal for $19.95
for I think 2 weeks. I use BOMAR which are also good, but ICM is still

One chance in very many here - What freq
crystals are you needing? I have a set for a
new Kendecom that I sold and kept the crystals
as they were wrong for the new buyer - these are

Fine. If they have to take longer to provide the product, don't tell me
delivery will be 4 weeks than take longer.

The apology letter I received from them said nothing about a backlog of
orders.

As for the flawless part, I did not directly relate that to the time. I
said I went with them due to their reputation. That is the reason why I
didn't order from Bomar. In all the orders from Bomar, they always took
how long they said. While I've never had a problem with them, I wanted
to take out the extra 'insurance' of purchasing from ICM. I wasn't aware
of the fact that the delivery time would suffer as much as it has.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Crystals Motorola etc

2007-11-04 Thread Jeff DePolo

My last few crystal orders went to West Crystal (www.westcrystal.com) in BC,
Canada. In the 80's and early 90's I ordered from Bomar exclusively, and
then started running into problems and switched to ICM. I was very happy
with ICM for the next ten years or so, but their prices started to get
pretty steep so I decided to try West Crystal on the recommendation of Dave
KA9FUR and several others on this list and I've been pleased thus far.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Crystals Motorola etc

2007-11-04 Thread Eric Lemmon
Joe,

I don't see a connection between how long the order takes and whether or not
the crystals are flawless. Knowing that a properly-made and -compensated
crystal takes time, I'd shy away from a company that has a very short
turnaround.

Perhaps the longer turnaround time with orders at ICM is due to ICM getting
a lot of new business from disgruntled customers of other crystal suppliers.

If you ever get the opportunity to tour the Bomar crystal plant, do so, and
take plenty of pictures and keep careful notes. Follow a particular crystal
order through the process from order-taking to shipment. Then, do the same
thing at ICM. Write an article about your findings, and draw some
conclusions. I am quite certain it will be interesting!

Another respectable option: do the following:
http://www.repeater-builder.com/projects/no6b-crystal-heater.html
Then, your result will be even better where temp stability is concerned.

*If one of the elements are FM for transmit, then I'd send them to the

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Crystals Motorola etc

2007-11-03 Thread Jim Brown
I use Bomar these days for crystals for the ham bands. I have had good luck
installing them myself and re-adjusting them in a year or so back to the right
frequency.

I recently worked on a GE Delta radio that had been crystaled using CUMEX and
found the receive crystal had drifted over 2 kHz in the several years it had
been in service. It was so far off it would not adust back to the original
frequency until I ran the adjustment slug on down through the coil form and
added another slug on top of it. Now with two slugs in the coil, it wound up
back on frequency. I don't know if it will continue to drift, or if it has
settled down, but for now it is working just fine.

I used Marden for crystals until I got into a beef with them on a receive
frequency and gave up after sending an operating crystal back to them a couple
of times and telling them what frequency it operated on, and them sending it
back and telling me what frequency they thought it operated on.

Yes, I know that International makes them but the price is high.

I have had good luck putting crystals in old channel elements and changing the

to achieve reasonable stability. Used to use CUMEX in El Paso but they seem to

Well the radio is only specified to run a certain percentage in transmit
anyway, but at this point, you can probably get a dump-truck load of
Mitreks for the asking. That will give you enough radios to keep the
repeater running until Doomsday. All you need is a few channel elements,
and you can skip using lightning protection altogether.

If a Mitrek falls in the forest, does it make a noise?

Eric, Thanks for the reply
Lab is not equal to testing lab but is OK. Cumex were cheap crystals and
managed to compensate ok.
Bomar which everyone seems to recommend makes much better crystals. I have a
small oven and an ERI counter good to .1 hz at 440. I can cycle and adjust
within reason.

Ralph,

Before you make a decision on your supplier, please read the following
article:

builder.com/tech-info/temperature-compensation.html>

Unless you have a testing laboratory equal to that found in a commercial
crystal house, I suspect that your "good luck" is more likely "blind luck",
and does not justify putting new crystals in previously-compensated channel
elements. I and many others believe that the $30 extra spent for a full
compensation is money well spent. Otherwise, your crystal that you think is
doing just fine may have deficiencies that you don't know about, and don't
have the equipment to detect.

I'm not just talking about rare cases here- a local 220 repeater was
notorious for drifting rapidly off frequency during extended net operation
and distorted audio. It was a converted Mastr II that the owner recrystaled
himself. When confronted with the complaint that the frequency drifted, he
was in denial because he said he bought the crystal from ICM! Once the
crystal was sent back to ICM with the ICOM and fully compensated for $30,
the repeater worked perfectly. Not only was the drifting problem solved,
but the audio clarity was profoundly improved. It seems that the ICOM was
originally compensated for a factory-made crystal that had different
characteristics from the new crystal made by ICM. Since ICM was not given
the ICOM in advance, ICM had no way to test or modify the ICOM to work
properly with the new crystal. In my book, it makes sense to always get the
full compensation of a new crystal to the ICOM or channel element.

Ralph,

Check out BOMAR crystals. You might be surprised at their prices. Also, I
believe that Repeater-Builder, the company, uses them. Check in with Kevin

Repeater Builder uses BOMAR for the most part, ICM for the rest.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Crystals for peaking generator?

2007-06-27 Thread allan crites
Depending on the model of Motorola peaking generator you possess determines the
type and freq. of the xtal you can use in it.
The later model accomodates 20-32pF xtals from about 4-5 MHz to about 15 MHz,
negating the need for the xtal to be 1/2 the output freq. for a 10.7 MHz out.
Any use of series resonant xtals will result in the output to be at some
higher indirect multiple freq.

[Repeater-Builder] crystals for repeaters

2005-11-13 Thread Lt Ron Wright
Hi all,

When building repeaters many of us use older, but still very good
equipment such as Motorola and GE. The newer stuff that cost
thousands are what the commerical guys use, but repeaters made from
older units work great and can be had for much less.

This often means the need for crystals.

I spend about $1500 to $2000 each year on crystals and I only buy
good crystals, DEFFINITY NO NO NO JAN. I have seen some of the best
manufactures either go out of business or lower their standards to
the point the quality goes to pot.

Two manufactures I use are International Crystal and BOMAR. Both
make an excellent crystal. If you need one or more all you need is
the frequency, the radio, a method of payment and a phone.

NOW TO MY REAL POINT.

>From International they want $19.95 per crystal for 2 week crystals,
but they are now shipping 3 weeks plus. For a pair for a repeater
with UPS ground shipping this comes to about $47. A couple months
back this was at 6 weeks.

So I had to find another source and it was BOMAR. They cost more,
about same good quality, but did deliever in 2 weeks. However, they
have a $50 min order so to meet this they put my crystal orders on 2
weeks which made the cost $25 each and with shipping came to $60 for
one pair.

Then one day I had to have 6 crystals, 3 repeater pairs. I placed
the order and the cost was $10 per crystal and with shipping $70.
WHAT $60 for one pair and $70 for 3 pairs and all of the crystals
were 6 different freqs.

The catch was with the min order. For 3 pair at $70, $10 per, the
order went to 3 to 4 weeks and this is the standard cost. But to
meet the $50 for one pair had to be 1-2 weeks.

So now if I need one pair I still order 3 for some day I will need
the extra 2. So if you are going to crystal a repeater and have a
vision of adding a remote base later, you would probably know the
freq, order 3 pairs. One pair could be for a back up repeater.

I know commerical users need the crystals now for time is money to
them. For many of us 3-4 weeks is eaten up just building the
repeater so no time is really lost. Have the repeater built and
ready for the crystals.

On my last order to BOMAR for some reason the 3-4 weeks became about
10 days. Guess they had time or probably a mix up, but I was happy
and for $70 for all.

Iternational 800-725-1426 (OK)
BOMAR 800-526-3935 (NJ)

Hi Guys,

If you ever want crystals again, think about going off-shore, our crystal
company, Rakon, located in Auckland, New Zealand produces some of the best
crystals around. And they are not that expensive at all. Got a pair a couple
of months ago, and cost $29 each (about US$18). They do ship worldwide.
They can be found at rakon.co.nz

Just an added comment, I have used USPS to ship nearly 90% of items I
purchase from the States. In all cases, I have received the parcels in good
condition, and quick. I recently ordered a TS-480S, was mailed on a US
Wednesday (NZ Thursday), and was at my door on the Monday, 4-5 days
depending on how one looks at it.
I have used DHL, FedEx and one other company, and the hassles I had to get
the parcel, and the cost. NZ mail, which USPS sends it to, lets NZ customs
decide, all the others automatically put the extra customs tax on
regardless, even if there is an exception. Part of their policy. (Got a
little off)

Regards, and thanks for reading my 5 cents worth. (2 cents is no longer used
in NZ, and soon to be no 5 cents either.)

Kevin, ZL1KFM.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] crystals

2005-07-22 Thread Neil McKie

Years ago, I worked for local county radio shop ... (ok I was the
county radio shop for those who remember.)

The various fire departments in the county wanted to change to a
dispatch frequency so, after getting licensed et al, a couple of
the fire departments asked me to assist changing frequencies on
 all the pagers.

I called International and Jan and obtained prices. Then I met
with the department chiefs describing Internationl is expensive
but the crystals are stable ... vs ... Jan is cheap but you'll
pay for it later as the stability is poor to none at all.

The two fire departments chose International Crystal.

Over the next few years, the crystals purchased from International
Crystal - were very frequency stable and seldom needed adjustment.

One other much larger fire department chose Jan Crystals and had
the city hired radio shop change the crystals ... not involving me.
Over the next few years, their pagers were reportedly in the radio
 shop frequently for readjustment.

Hope the above assists you in making your decision.

Jan has been very troublesome in the 25+ years I have been a ham, you hear
of a lot of complaints.

Bomar gave me a couple of bum crystals and then a few that drifted back in
the days 2M crystal radios. I used them since they were a few towns away
from me in NJ but I quit using them.

In the past 5 years I have used West Crystal in Ontario 4 times and they
gave me EXCELLENT FAST!!! service. I sent the element in and back came a
perfect element for several Mastr II's. Since West is over the border PLEASE
follow this suggestion...do not use UPS use the Postal Service it is faster
cheaper and you have less hassles. Mark on the form, Amateur Radio Parts for
Service and you should have no trouble. I did not do that one time and West
Crystal got charged by UPS all sorts of Import and Custom fees. The other 3
times when I used the Post Office we had no problems at all.

I thought Bomar only charged $10.00 per xtal so long as you don't need them right away.  I've used Jan for years, this is the first xtal that I have had a problem with.

Best places I ran accross that are still making crystals are International,
800-725-1426, in OK and Bomar, 800-526-3935. For a pair including shipping
International $47 taking about 6 weeks, Bomar $60 with true 2 weeks. Think
both are about the same and make a very good crystal and are well worth the
extra money. Please don't use JAN, hi.

Just have to give them radio, freqs and payment.

This is just the crystals for you to install in ICOMs. Both have ICOM
service, but cost much more.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Crystals, TC'ing and stuff

2004-12-19 Thread Kevin Custer

All,

>I use West Crystal in Canada, take advantage of the currency exchange rate!
>

I inquired (on the phone) to West Crystal about their recrystaling of
elements and ICOM's. I ask them if they do Temperature Compensation of
the element, and after quite a while the engineer finally admitted they
simply install the new crystal and "Net" it on frequency by changing the
parallel capacitor to achieve "on frequency" in the center of the
trimmer action.

I'm not saying anyone should not use West Crystal for your needs, just
beware that when they try to persuade you to send your element to them
for recrystaling, it won't be TC'ed, but it will be on frequency. My
point here is that "Netting" and "TC'ing" aren't the same thing...

Re: [Repeater-Builder] crystals for uhf mastr II

2003-12-03 Thread Wayne
I should have added that I will not buy from Sentry myself.
I bought a pair for Mastr II, gave them the ICOM part numbers, and they
screwed it up badly.
Claim I need to send my ICOM's to them because I was taking them out of
band (from 154 to 146 is out of band to their blithering minds).
I should call them one of these days and ask when the hell are they going
to send me a working pair.
meantime, I was given a set that were for the pair I had ordered, and
installed them in the same ICOM's that Sentry's junk would not work in.
I'm not sure if I should try asking them to redo and send a pair for a 440
pair that I will be using sometime down the road, after I move to the Mojave
California area.
I want a pair that will work, not more junk.
I was only using the size as a reference.

The last two times I tried dealing with Sentry they came off like
blithering idiots. For the same cost I went with ICM, They actually knew
exactly how to cut the crystals for the radios I have and the style case
to put them in, Marti STL-10 and R-10 and UHF Custom MVP. Takes 2 weeks

The last Sentry crystals I got would drift pretty bad in the radio and
needed to be re-tuned every month for a year and a half.
