we 9.3 upgrade
Hi all, By now, we all know that problems experienced by certain systems, will not necessarily be experienced by other identical systems. So this might be just my misfortune but may effect other becky email client users. . The latest update to we, has resulted in degraded and poor performance with The becky email client. List views are sluggish to navigate, read to end doesn't do anything at all, and locations reached from the tab key are not reliably anounced. Just to iliminate any inconsistncies, I have removed We altogether, and re-installed and run the update. What I can say, is that I can reliably replicate the unreliabilities that I experienced after upgrading, before removing and re-installing the software. This at least, is consistent. I have reverted back to 9.2 at least this is as stable as it gets with the apps I regularly run. Hope that a quick patch will resolve these issues. Here's a link to the download page. http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/ I'll even make it easier for y'all. here's a direct link to the installer, and then a direct link to the stand-alone executable. Re: Virtual View User's Guide
Thanks Aaron. One question if I may, will virtual view work with graphic capchas? Great job, and thanks for taking the trouble. Joe Paton On Fri, 6 Nov 2015 16:14:16 + Aaron Smith via Talk wrote: Greetings, The following user's guide will ship with the next version of Virtual View, but I wanted to provide it for you here as many of you have been asking for more information about what Virtual View is, and how to use it. Thanks, Aaron Virtual View 1 Overview Virtual View is an app designed to provide a textual representation of a program window, dialog box, message box or file using various text retrieval methods. The resulting text can be reviewed in the Virtual View window without disturbing the contents of the screen or file. In some cases, the buttons, links and other controls found in the original window that was virtualized can be acted on directly from the Virtual View window using simple keyboard commands. This app will come in handy in a variety of situations including: * Reading image based PDF files * Reading text presented as an image * Selecting and copying static text found in dialogs and program windows * Interacting with programs that lack proper keyboard accessibility * Needing quick access to the text found in a PowerPoint presentation 2 Getting Started The default hotkey, Control-Alt-V, will open the source selection dialog. You may also choose to access Virtual View from the Apps menu in the Window-Eyes Control Panel. Virtual View may also be activated by pressing Alt-Print Screen. Alt-Print Screen is an operating system hotkey that takes a snapshot of the active window. You have the option of letting Virtual View virtualize this image when the hotkey is pressed. 3 Selecting a Source Pressing the Virtual View hotkey, or choosing Virtual View from the apps menu, will cause the "Select Window or File to Virtualize" dialog to be displayed. You can use this dialog to tell Virtual View what you want to virtualize. You may choose from one of three sources: 1. Active Window (A) - Selecting this radio button will cause the current application window to be used as the source. 2. Focused Window (F) - Selecting this radio button will cause the current control in the active application to be used as the source. 3. File (I) - Selecting this radio button will cause Virtual View to prompt for a file using a standard Windows File Open dialog. 3.1 Supported File Types Virtual View has the ability to virtualize a large number of file types. Exactly which files can be virtualized depends on the number of available file "filters" installed in your operating system. Filters are programmatic interfaces for accessing contents of files. Several filters come pre-installed with your operating system. The most common file types include: * Text * XML * HTML * Zip Installing Microsoft Office provides you with additional filters allowing Virtual View to virtualize many Office document formats, including: * Docx * Xlsx * Pptx 4 Choosing a Method After you've selected a source, whether it be a window or a file, you can then choose how you want Virtual View to obtain the text from the source. The methods available will differ depending on which source type is selected. 1. Clips (C) - The clips method will use the OSM (Off-Screen Model) to retrieve text from a window. 2. UIA (A) - This UIA method will use the UI Automation interface to retrieve text from a window. 3. OCR (O) - This method uses OCR (optical character recognition) to retrieve text from either a window or a file. 4. Version (V) - This method provides version information for a window or file. Which method you choose depends on a number of factors, and there are advantages of each. Clips is the most common method for accessing the text of a window. They provide a good way for accessing precise locations of text for easy manipulation with Virtual View's quick keys (discussed below). The advantage of using UIA is evident when obtaining text from windows that do not show up in the OSM. WPF applications, and other Direct2D programs, are good examples of windows that have rich UIA information while at the same time are completely void of clips. The UIA method obtains text directly from the window rather than from the OSM, often resulting in higher text accuracy. OCR is a preferred choice when working with graphical interfaces, or files containing images. While you don't have the benefit of knowing exactly where the text is presented on the screen, you do have access to otherwise completely inaccessible text. 5 The Virtual View Window After Virtual View has obtained the text from the selected source, using the chosen method, it will display the resulting text in a read only edit box. The Virtual View dialog contains a menu bar w

window-eyes running in demonstration mode
Morning all, I want to successfully install WE 9.0.0 from a bona fide cd, on to a windows xp SP3 machine for a client. When complete, WE reports that it is in demo mode and has 5 minutes to run. I've removed the software, and re-installed. Same problem. Trying alternative synthesisers, Dec Talk Access 32, ETI eloquence, had no effect, and I doubted that it would. So I installed WE 7.5.4 which runs ok. What on earth is going on. In all the years that I have worked with WE, I have never experienced this. I have WE 9.0 on an office machine running xp, without problems. although it was upgraded rather than being installed afresh. I have seen comments on the list on WE running in demo mode, but as is the case, paid no heed to them because it didn't effect me then, now it does. Re: Microsoft Forms And WindowEyes Accessibility Settings
Hello rick, Which specific programs do you need access with window-eyes? alternatively where are you experiencing difficulty with window-eyes and what programs? I can see from your comprehensive post the details surrounding ensuring that controls are labelled and laid out in an accessible order so to speak. so what specifically can you not access? Thanks, JP On Thu, 24 Sep 2015 08:06:48 -0400 Rick Thomas via Talk wrote: Hi: I have asked several times on this list about settings, properties, for setting up my programs to work with WindowEyes. I have never heard from AI Squared about the settings they would want to see so a Windows Form would work best with their software. Here is an example of a question that was answered on the blind programming list about setting up a dialog for accessibility with screen readers that monitor the accessibility features Microsoft has put in place for all of their controls - I find it hard to believe WindowEyes doesn't monitor for accessibility - what are they using if not what Microsoft has in place for accessibility of their forms and controls? I have asked about the accessibility settings for several controls and never gotten a response. Here is what on developer said about a dialog, I have no question about the dialog box but other more complex controls like the Tabbed Document and other controls but it will show you that Microsoft indeed has settings screen readers can use if setup properly but it is up to the screen reader company to develop against them. This just popped up so I thought I would put it up here so you can see an example of what I was talking about in the past if you read those messages and are interested in WindowEyes Accessibility with Microsoft Windows Projects and Programs: I am especially interested in the Accessible Role - the others are just fluf and not overly related to WindowEyes, although they may be. Hi Akash! You can design a dialog box such as a standard Windows form by setting the following properties: Windows location you need to set to Center Screen. ControlBox, you need to set to False. You can leave minimize and maximize box to true, but for a standard dialog it needs to be False, because in a standard dialog boxes, you have not possibility to minimize or maximize a dialog box. In the Accessibility name, you need to type your form caption, the AccessibleName, and Text property of a form should have the same value. The Accessibility rol property should be set to Dialog, and each control on the dialog box should have the AccessibilityRol property set to the corresponding control for example: TextBox=Text Label=StaticText Button=PushButton You can set the AccessibilityRol property using the following: 1. Place cursor on a control you want to change there properties. 2. Press the F4 key to bring up the properties window. 3. Use the up and down arrow keys until you find the AccessibilityRol property. 4. Press the Tab key until you hear Browse..., and hit the Space bar. 5. Use the Up and Down arrow keys until you find the corresponding control type which match the control type you placed on the form and hit the Enter key. That's it! Thanks Keith. also in your graphics propperties, under hotkeys, you should disable these. It's usually alt-control-arrow keys that flip the display. I don't know how many Window-Eyes users would care about rotation, or even need to care about this particular tip, but I thought that nevertheless, this tip might be of help to some of you on this list in the future. I hope that this has been of value to at least somebody. If you have gotten value out of this tip, feel free to let me know. window-eyes associations
Morning all, I've recently re-classed a list view in a file management program, search everything. I did this because, as is so damn typical, what used to work propperly, no longer works propperly. Having re-classed the view, now we reads sweet nothing. Further, we won't return the class to the original class. There is no association with the program everything. What files do I need to delete in we, so that I can start again, to end up, where I was before the damn thing got broken? Re: file find in windows seven
Hi Butch, try search everything. It's a great utility for finding files. I've just tried to find, using windows find facility, a file I was reading earlier. It told me zero results. How good is that? I guess that windows find may need some tweeking to interrogate the root of the drive where the file I know is resting. Search everything on the other hand, needed no tweeking, and found the file. The only kaviat, is that the results list view isn't always read by window-eyes, using the regular cursor keys, the mouse pointer is required. Try it. you won't be disappointed. Re: keys on new computer
Hi Pam. this is my understanding. the function keys on a laptop, will usually perform special functions, pertaining to the laptop. For example, they may brighten the display, reduce and increase the volume of audio, Mut the speech, put the computer to sleep et cetera. So when they are setup, by default, for example, f5 may mute the speech. So to have f5 do what windows or the software want it to do, you press the f n key, then f5. Now you have switched the function of the function keys, to perform there desired task. Not a task set by the laptop manufacturer. The other way, is to have the function keys, perform there regular functions, but you make them perform laptop functions, by pressing the f n key with a functionkey. so F N f6 will do what the laptop manufacturer wants, for example dim the display. F6 pressed on its own, if say internet explorer is running, will take you to the address bar. does this make sense to you? To summarise, what the function keys are set to do by default, is switched with the fn key. If by default, f4 changes the display brightness, then alt fn key and f4 will close your program. If f4 is set for regular windows use, then F N key and f4 will change the brightness. So what you want the sales person to do, is turn the function keys off, for laptop use, and then by default they will do what you want. This can often be done in the mobile settings, or in the bios. You don't need to touch the registry at all. Hope this helps. Joe On Sun, 9 Aug 2015 17:12:27 -0400 Pamela Dominguez via Talk wrote: I wasnt sure how to word the subjectline. I have asked this question before and not gotten an answer, so I hope somebody can help me. People talk about getting computers and having the function keys do different things. One person said the function keys act right away, so that when you go to use our commands with them, they do other things. I think it was said that you have to either use a function key with the function keys on a laptop, or you have to go into the registry or the bios and change it so that the keys do what we want. Rather than have to do that, what question should I ask when buying the laptop so that I get one with function keys that act properly? I need to know, since I am going shopping for a replacement. Re: For those with speech loss and crash issues
Hi, I suspect that there is more than one cause to speech los and crashing. This machine has 8 GB of ram, and still lockups and some crashes. To track these problems down is never straight forward, as even on identically specked machine, different behaviours will manifest thenselves. Of course there will be common causes and solutions to specific crashes, but there are those which fall outside the criteria. This is one of a set of circumstances which make it so difficult for tech support to solve. I guess that careful scrutiny of the appropriate windows log files may point in the right direction. T those who upgrade their ram, and if crashes go away, then that is good. 4 GB of physical ram is max for 32-bit versions of windows 7, then much more than that for 64-bit versions. Most folk probably know this but in case somebody does not, Here are the upper RAM limits for the different editions of Windows 7: Starter: 8GB Home Basic: 8GB Home Premium: 16GB Professional: 192GB Enterprise: 192GB Ultimate: 192GB Good luck with the crashes. Re: Unable to select text using latest version of sindoweyes.
Hello Al, Hope the post below helps clarify things for you. from Doug Geoffray on the new method of cutting, copying and pasting in IE. His message is below. message starts here. Jim, This is by design. I responded privately to a user about this yesterday...below is my explanation I sent him (slightly modified for public consumption). This gets very hard to explain but the two f8 issues you provide are by design...but here it goes. Window-Eyes 9 now uses IE to actually select the information. We give it the beginning and end and it selects. This has a couple advantages. First, this acts exactly like a sighted user would get if they took the mouse and selected the text. They would get the same results. Second, it allows for formatting to be included. Window-Eyes 8.4 simply gave you the text and no formatting or graphics or anything. The problem comes in when a screen reader provides information that isn't typically visible on the page. For example, what if this were a graphical link? The user sees a picture but the author labeled the image specifically for accessibility. A sighted user would never get this description, only the image itself. With Window-Eyes 9, that is what you also get. Another example is what if the link is showing whatever but they use ARIA to mark up what a screen reader (any accessibility aid for that matter) should be using? Again, IE wouldn't render this ARIA text but it is the accessible text the web author gave. We can't select the text that IE doesn't report with the normal clipboard selection. This is partly why shift-arrow selection is so difficult now because we don't have our little pre-processed static buffer anymore like the outdated 8.4 technique. We can't stay in sync with what you are selecting and what IE can really render. NVDA gets away with this better (although still not perfect) by not allowing you to select formatting or images...they are basically doing the old WE 8.4 technique. Bottom line, to make this manageable, when you select anything from a link, we force the entire link. This is why if you are on a link and you just hit f8 twice followed by enter for copy you get the entire link. At some point we may implement a feature that if the beginning and end of the selection using f8 is done on the same line then we just copy the text as we provide even though IE wouldn't ever render this to a sighted user. In most cases I'm seeing people do what you are doing, select a few words from the current line and not spanning lines. I think we could do this correctly but it still wouldn't allow you to select from the middle of a link down and include the next line as one example. Well, not without getting the entire link from the first line. Remember, a sighted user often can't even get to the text that a screen reader speaks...and even in the youtube example, a sighted user also can't just clip the name from the link text, it just won't let me. It just depends on how the page was done. So you may not like how it handles this but it is now 100 percent accurate. You can of course fine tune what you want after pasting. I hope this helps. If I select a previously broadcast programme via bbc.co.uk Internet Explorer shows me a "Listen with pop out player" link, which Firefox does not. Is this true for me alone, or is this a general problem, and can it be fixed? I notice other controls on other sites, particularly buttons, which IE shows and Firefox does not. The apparent inaccessibility of the "pop out player" with Firefox is a particular problem because its controls work really well once selected. I would prefer Firefox to be my default browser if possible, but the browser seems determined to make itself inaccessible in annoying ways, while trumpeting its commitment to accessibility. Why does Firefox fail to recognise some of the controls with which IE seems to have no problem? -- Reg ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. Re: Thunderbird Problem
Hi Robert, there isn't another window open obscuring the message window? I have seen this with Eset nod32 when there is an alert. Just an idea. Also this seems to complicate reading to end at least sometimes. Interestingly when I look at a message that has been sent it appears to have more or less correct formatting. I suspect I've pushed some button somewhere that has created this problem. It seems to me that I've had this problem at least once before when I first started using Thunderbird but I can't remember the solution. Re: how to create a bat file to launch window eyes.
Try this. 1. go to your desktop. 2. locate the win-eyes shortcut. 3. press alt-enter to bring up the short cut propperties. 4. press shift-tab, to go to the shortcut page, arrow left to the general page. 5. Tab once. 6. press control-home. 7. Insert the att symbol at the begining of the filename. 8. tab to the ok button, and press it. Now you can press windows M, go to desktop. Then press the AT symbol, and enter, window eyes will start. option 2. 1. go to the window-eyes start menu group. 2. open the submenu, and locate window-eyes. 3. right click, or press the applications key. 4. press the letter K, or arrow down to "pin to task-bar." press enter. Now pressing the windows key and a number, will fire off window-eyes. For example on this box, windows-key and the number 6 starts window-eyes. Windows key and number 1 starts the email client. Windows key and 2 starts winamp. If you have nine items already pinned to the task-bar, this may not work unless you remove one or more of the existing 9. There maybe a work-around for this, but I've never needed it. On Wed, 11 Feb 2015 12:02:02 -0500 Sue J Ward via Talk wrote: Hello. I do have a usb keyboard that I am using on my Dell machine, whenever I do control alt w, the hotkey is there in the properties to launch the program both in the start menu and the desk top, for some reason I try to do it several times, nothing happens. So was wondering how do I create a bat file to launch window eyes? Sometimes I do use NVDA to do other stuff, so it would be nice to get a work around. So far the only way to get around this is I launch nvda through the windows run dialog so that I have speech, then I do shut down window eyes, then whenever I am done with NVDA, I have to go to the windows run dialog to launch and type in wineyes. Re: Status icons in Eudora
Hello, What you need to do is, close window-eyes, open eudora, then re-start window-eyes. Then certainly as at version 8.x the status graphics were anounced. It's a real nuisance. I've changed the way I work to overcome this serious short coming. Not the email client though. although as I write this, I'm using Becky, but this is another office machine. Good luck. Does anyone have suggestions on how to configure Window-eyes 8.4 and Eudora 7.1.09 to allow window-eyes to speak these icons?
