Re: Topband: Wednesday 160m DX Activity Night
Agreed. I have a modest (read sub-par) station but was thrilled to work 2 UK stations and a score of NA. Most nights I need to go to 80 for Qs. A 160 Activity Night (DX or not) could more occasionally light up the band! 73 de Ed, K1RID Newburyport Electronics & Radio Society www.k1yrd.org > On Nov 27, 2018, at 18:13, Roger Kennedy > wrote: > > > It's so frustrating that you always hear hundreds of stations on Top Band > whenever there's a contest on, or when there's some DX-pedition active on > the band . . . yet most of the time the band is dead ! > > I find it even more frustrating that there's often people posting lots > stations that are on the band using FT8 (which doesn't interest me in the > slightest) . . . yet NOBODY is on CW. > > That's why last Winter I suggested a regular Wednesday Activity Night . . . > one evening when hopefully lots of stations would make the effort to come on > the band at the same time, so we could all work each other. > > It was pretty successful . . . so hopefully we can make it work again this > Winter too ! > > I'll certainly be on the band from around 2300Z tomorrow night. > > 73 Roger G3YRO > > _ > Searchable Archives: http://www.contesting.com/_topband - Topband Reflector _ Searchable Archives: http://www.contesting.com/_topband - Topband Reflector
Topband: Wednesday 160m DX Activity Night
It's so frustrating that you always hear hundreds of stations on Top Band whenever there's a contest on, or when there's some DX-pedition active on the band . . . yet most of the time the band is dead ! I find it even more frustrating that there's often people posting lots stations that are on the band using FT8 (which doesn't interest me in the slightest) . . . yet NOBODY is on CW. That's why last Winter I suggested a regular Wednesday Activity Night . . . one evening when hopefully lots of stations would make the effort to come on the band at the same time, so we could all work each other. It was pretty successful . . . so hopefully we can make it work again this Winter too ! I'll certainly be on the band from around 2300Z tomorrow night. 73 Roger G3YRO _ Searchable Archives: http://www.contesting.com/_topband - Topband Reflector
Re: Topband: Wednesday 160m DX Activity Night
Hmm, this last week was still hitting RBN over there, and worked G3OLB two different days a little before his sunrise. One of those was a long lovely old time 599 QSO with Tom, like I was working someone in Ohio on 80 meters. It might be "season" over, but 160 sure isn't over, at least not yet. I think a lot of people don't get on unless there is an "event". Or unless they hear a lot of signals. I remember when I was a kid and we had "marbles" season**. Everyone started showing up at school with marbles in their pocket. Then one day nobody had any and marbles season was over. We COULD have played marbles for another month until school was out for summer, weather was fine for such things most days. Just that nobody showed up at school with any marbles after "marbles season" was over. Waste of perfectly good propagation. Hmm, CWops tonightlast ten minutes... 73, Guy. ** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marble_(toy) On Mon, Apr 23, 2018 at 12:40 PM, Ed Sawyer wrote: > Roger. Yes, you're probably right Ed. But the band is certainly still open to North America at this time of year, and we rarely have any thunderstorms causing QRN on the band until August. I'll certainly be on again tonight (from around 0100Z), and I'm sure other Europeans will be too. 73 Roger G3YRO -- Roger. My guess is that it is considered "season over" by most of the boys. The past few evenings all I've been noticed by are RBN, apart from a few die-hard Top Banders like AA1K, K4IQJ and DU7ET. These are some of the blokes who don't let a few summer atmospherics deter them. 73, Luke VK3HJ _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband

Well the band is still open for DX between NA and Europe, as shown when I come on and get some great reports from various RBN stations . . . But do I have any real contacts? No ! Because I guess there is no activity. Those of you (like me) who complain that these FT8 stations are not having REAL contacts ought to make the effort to come on the band and have some proper DX QSOs ! There were quite a few Europeans on last Wednesday, and over the weekend, all endlessly calling CQ DX but often with no replies. I know the Summer is coming . . . but I'm sure we can keep these Wednesday nights going for a few more weeks . . . so come on chaps! Re: Topband: Wednesday 160m DX Activity Night
David, I very much enjoyed our simple QSO last night. Ignore the idiots who are reduced to being pests. They happen to turn up everywhere. By the way, the QSO was very useful: I was testing the new 160 m antenna that we will be taking to KH1. As you may know, the USFWS is limiting us to verticals with a maximum height of 43 feet. That is not a lot for TB, but I think I got a decent solution. (I worked a bunch Europeans a few weeks ago with an earlier version using 700 W.) TKS for the good report! It must have been "your turn" again Adrian! I worked DU7ET (more or less local), JA5BIN, and heard VE3MGY. N0FW reported my signal as "loud". There are very few folks on lately, even with an open band to many areas. I only lit up the local RBN. Finished with a QSO with Steve VK7CW, enjoying his very nice bug sending. Rats. I was working on my Johnson Valiant last night and forgot it was 160 activity night. I have maybe 2 to 3 more weeks before the BOG and RBOG antennas get taken down as well as the INV-L radials get removed. I keep one or two radials rolled up and connected during the summer so I can temporarily unroll them as needed, but it’s rather difficult to work into EU or AF with only that configuration. REALLY hoping to work one of our VK friends before that……. KH1 Is going to be interesting…….. I’ll probably scalp part of the lawn and redeploy the RBOG and hope the SW direction works. Maybe add another few radials for the INV-L. Of course, I’ve been wanting to build a rotating loop for 160/80 and KH1 might be the excuse I need! 73 Mark K3MSB _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband

As always, we needed the rain, but let's hope for better condx next week. 73, Brad KV5V On Wed, Mar 28, 2018 at 6:23 PM, vk2wf wrote: > Hi PaulInteresting! It would seem that one's location makes a big > difference.Last night I managed AA1K, K1CP and W6ENZ.But on the previous > night on Tuesday, nothing.73Adrian VK2WF > > > > Sent from my SAMSUNG Galaxy S7 on the Telstra Mobile Network > Original message From: VK3HJ < > vk3hj_l...@barefoothorse.com.au> Date: 29/3/18 10:08 am (GMT+10:00) To: > topband@contesting.com Subject: Re: Topband: Wednesday 160m DX Activity > Night > Wednesday night was positively awful from VK3. Well, I'm not sure if it has been poor conditions, or a just a lack of activity . . . But I've not heard many North American stations on the band lately. Hopefully we'll have some activity tonight ! I'll be on as usual (about 1.828) from around Z . . . there's usually other Europeans on too. Re: Topband: Wednesday 160m DX Activity Night
Hi Dave, Although I made my first 160 QSO using a DX100 and a re-tuned car radio for a receiver in 1959 (a VE7 no less) I've not really been a regular on topband. Last year it dawned on me that if I got a 160 DXCC I would have 9 bands, so that became a goal. I now have it worked but need about 5 or 6 more QSLs. As for more "goo" I dunno. I'm 76 and am supposed to be downsizing :-). I previously sold the tube amp, ripped out the 240V service and bought an Elecraft KPA500. Now they have a KPA1500 but it's $6K and I have other ongoing issues with some of my Elecraft stuff, although the KPA500 has been almost flawless. Plus, I've already spent an astonishing amount of $ on a simple inverted-L. Sonotube, concrete, chrome moly ground post, DX Engineering foldover mount, winch, aluminum tubing, hose clamps, guy ropes and wire for radials. Whew. Whatever happened to the beer can vertical? I was going to say I can afford upgrades, but the stock market just sank 700 points, so maybe not. But, as you say, it's mostly fun and cheaper than playing golf. I would agree on the 500 watts. On 160, you need all the goo you can muster for the DX. I love playing with QRP on 160 and I can reach out maybe 800 or 900 miles on a good night, but, when calling stations across the Carib, Atlantic or way out in the Pacific, even 500 watts is "iffy". So many times I hear loud DX stations and I try to call at the 100 watt level to no avail. It is so easy to have 10 dB of extra noise on your receiver and that prevents you from hearing anything other than the loudest signals. Re: Topband: Wednesday 160m DX Activity Night
Hello brethren, Dave, yes, I changed QTH moving from the ocean to Guayaquil city and now I'm residing in downtown area which implies certain challenges working low bands. However, to my joy, I'm not utterly deafened by the city's QRMand tropical QRN, the way I thought I would be. My noise situation is tolerable at least I'm hearing NA and some EUs on a, say, inadequate antenna. Just for a try I erected a 14m high aluminum mast on the balcony at 2nd floor at about 4 meters above the street and ran a wire along it and an extentended "tail" to form an inverted L. My next is step is to make an Inverted L alongside an existing 22 meter high tower that supports 20 and 15 m Yagis. There is enough space to accomodate 3 quarter-wave radials. That will be done as I get a safety belt to climb the tower - a day or a week time frame - everything is slow here. On QRO. There is Henry amp with fresh st of tubes that requires adding an extra network for 1660 which wil be done soon to have reasonable power. I'll be active on TB soon again. 73 to all, Alex HC2AO at HC2GRC >Четверг, 22 марта 2018, 14:26 UTC от daraym...@iowatelecom.net: > >Alex, HC2AO, was QRV Wednesday night which must have been from a >new/different location. Hi All Roger, I wouldn't get too excited abt this weekend QRV. Remember we have the CQWW160 SSB test! Doesn't do much for DX, hi. And Ken, I was listening when you worked UK9AA. Roger G3YRO and a French station (F6AGM?) made it into the log.I heard several other EU stations with nice signals but did not work them as they were in QSO and my operating time was only during TV commercials as I was watching the Olympics. I worked UK9AA last month and tried to work him again last night; twice he came back and faded into the noise so I was unable to log him again. That's a fairly rare one from this side of the pond. 73, Ken - K4XL On Thu, Feb 22, 2018 at 5:48 AM, Roger Kennedy < ro...@wessexproductions.co.uk> wrote: > Well conditions were strange last night . . . > > Generally poor propagation . . . and high background noise here (even on my > Rx aerial) - apologies if you were one of the stations I heard calling, but > couldn't pull out of the noise. > > However, I did manage to work 16 NA stations in the 2 hours I stayed on, > including across to Texas. > > What was more weird was some of my RBN reports from NA stations (which I > often view when the band's quiet, to check propagation) - several gave me > over 40dB above the noise, one even +48dB ! > > Thanks to everyone who came on (inc several EU stations) . . . > > I shall be on at the weekend, and certainly next Wednesday again. > > 73 Roger G3YRO > > _ > Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband > -- Ken - K4XL BoatAnchor Manual Archive BAMA - http://bama.edebris.com _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
Topband: Wednesday 160m DX Activity Night
Well conditions were strange last night . . . Generally poor propagation . . . and high background noise here (even on my Rx aerial) - apologies if you were one of the stations I heard calling, but couldn't pull out of the noise. However, I did manage to work 16 NA stations in the 2 hours I stayed on, including across to Texas. What was more weird was some of my RBN reports from NA stations (which I often view when the band's quiet, to check propagation) - several gave me over 40dB above the noise, one even +48dB ! Thanks to everyone who came on (inc several EU stations) . . . I shall be on at the weekend, and certainly next Wednesday again. 73 Roger G3YRO _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband

Tuesday I worked an EA7 on FT8. Wednesday activity FT8 wise was down quite a bit. On 2/21/2018 8:11 AM, Charlie Young wrote: 160 is full of surprises. Of all nights to get him, I did not think it would be last night. Goes to show, you can take nothing for granted on 160M. I almost pulled the plug due to the poor condx, and would have missed a new one if we would have done that. 73 Charlie N8RR Sent from Mail<https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=550986> for Windows 10 From: Roger Kennedy<mailto:ro...@wessexproductions.co.uk> Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2018 5:28 AM To: topband@contesting.com<mailto:topband@contesting.com> Subject: Topband: Wednesday 160m DX Activity Night Conditions have been rather poor the last few evenings . . . or is it just lack of activity?! You will have to excuse me, as 2330z is 1030l and the sun will have been up for 3.5 hours. I will be trying around my sunrise from now until the end of summer, around 2000z for Europe, except on contest weekends. 73, Luke VK3HJ _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
