Re: [Trisquel-users] BBC videos.
BBC iPlayer contains full TV shows such as dramas which probably don't appear in their YouTube channel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] BBC videos.
Yes non-UK residents can listen to radio shows. Anyway, the audio and video files can be downloaded using youtube-dl or get-iplayer since they access the iPhone streams which are not encumbered by DRM.
Re: [Trisquel-users] dermdoc
Another recommended upgrade is getting an SSD drive.
Re: [Trisquel-users] synchronize iPod Nano 5G
Try Banshee. It worked when I tried it and even supported videos but I stopped using it as I added Rockbox to my iPod.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Goodbye Abrowser, Long Live Abrowser
Just run apt-get source abrowser.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Mozilla-based browser add on that is similar to the old FlashVideoReplacer.
Another option is replacing embedded videos with a link which the LinkTube Greasemonkey user script does: You can get it here (it requires Greasemonkey or Scriptish to work): http://isebaro.com/linktube/?ln=en http://isebaro.com/linktube/include/files/linktube.user.js Greasemonkey: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/748/ Scriptish: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/scriptish/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Jdownloader
Try plowshare (the git version is the easiest to install): https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-download-file-sharing-websites-using-plowshare
Re: [Trisquel-users] Live sport stream
One solution I found was to search for rtmp streams of (non-english) tv channels which broadcast the sport event and download those using rtmpdump. You can find many websites that list live rtmp streams using your favorite search engine. Some live streams use HTTP dynamic streaming which can be viewed and downloaded using livestreamer: https://trisquel.info/fr/node/11032
Re: [Trisquel-users] Anyone else frustrated in lack of WebM content and WebM quality on YouTube?
t3g, 720P or higher WebM videos are no longer provided by YouTube when using youtube-dl or ViewTube (I have no idea whether they can be accessed using other methods). For music videos, you can usually get much better quality versions (unfortunately in H.264 format only but you can transcode to get a much higher quality WebM videos) from the vevo.com website (youtube-dl can download from it - you might need to use a VPN for it) or the MTV websites (you just need to use the id numbers of the videos and copy them to a website such as the two below and then use rtmpdump - a VPN might also be needed to access some videos). Here are two sites that provides rtmp links for MTV websites: http://www.mtv.com/player/includes/mediaGen.jhtml?vid= http://intl.esperanto.mtvi.com/www/xml/media/mediaGen.jhtml?uri=mgid:uma:video:mtv.co.uk: Just replace the stars by the video id, e.g. for this video http://www.mtv.com.au/music/artists/florence-and-the-machine/videos/shake-it-out-698321/?playlist=florence-and-the-machine-playlist the i.d. is 698321.
[Trisquel-users] Digital audio player with free MIDI support?
Rockbox supports MIDI, but only through a non-commerical plugin. Is there a player that can play it using a free plugin? Also, can MPlayer playback midi (VLC can using FluidSynth plugin)?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Digital audio player with free MIDI support?
Thank you Magic Banana and Legimet. I am not interested in a touch based device just simple software to run on a handheld player such as an iPod or a Sansa device. My iPod already runs mostly free software as it runs Rockbox, however in order to playback MIDI there one needs to copy some non-commercial files which is not ideal. Regarding the MPlayer question: I asked it as that is the player I mostly use on my PC and would prefer to play MIDI files using that instead of VLC if possible.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser 30 slow html5 video
If you use ViewTube Greasemonkey script you can watch the videos using VLC, Totem or other video players. http://isebaro.com/viewtube/?ln=en
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser 30 slow html5 video
You can also try instead SMTube (get it via the official PPA) - which plays the YouTube videos via your preferred video player.

Not all. For instance connman is missing despite being in Ubuntu: http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/connman
Re: [Trisquel-users] T60 for libreboot - replace display
Great! If I many enquire where did you get a compatible display from?
Re: [Trisquel-users] T60 for libreboot - replace display
Try to replace 5 by another number (for me 2 worked) such as these: $ sudo i2cdump -y 0 0x50 $ sudo i2cdump -y 1 0x50 $ sudo i2cdump -y 2 0x50 $ sudo i2cdump -y 3 0x50 $ sudo i2cdump -y 4 0x50
Re: [Trisquel-users] T60 for libreboot - replace display
To find out which panel you have without opening the laptop just install the package i2c-tools then run: $ sudo modprobe i2c-dev $ sudo i2cdump -y 2 0x50 If it doesn't produce valid output replace 2 with some other number (this is based on the guide which appears at the Libreboot website which I provided a link to in the previous post).
Re: [Trisquel-users] T60 for libreboot - replace display
Incidentally, you can also get a panel upgrade for the X200 (AFFS/PVA technology similar to IPS), see e.g. here: https://github.com/bibanon/Coreboot-ThinkPads/wiki/ThinkPad-X200
Re: [Trisquel-users] T60 for libreboot - replace display
It seems your monitor is LTD121EWVB. According to this website http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/TFT_display your monitor is a 12" X200 panel produced by TMD-Toshiba.
Re: [Trisquel-users] T60 for libreboot - replace display
Yeah it's the regular TN panel with poor viewing angles (colors are probably pretty bad if you view it from the side). On the bright side, at least the resolution is respectable.
Re: [Trisquel-users] T60 for libreboot - replace display
IPS is a technology for panels which provides good viewing angles and high quality color reproduction: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPS_panel The following official 15" T60 panels are supported by Libreboot and are also IPS: LG-Philips LP150E05-A2K1 (1400x1050) BOE-Hydis HV150UX1-100 (1600x1200) You can also use unofficial panels (panels taken from other laptops), such as IDtech IAQX10N (2048x1536) (originally provided in R50P - GRUB screen doesn't show up but it loads GNU/Linux fine). You can find a list of IPS panels here: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/TFT_display You can find out which panel you have using this guide: https://libreboot.org/docs/misc/#get_edid_panelname P.S. I currently use the panel LP150E05-A2K1. Before that I used IAQX10N panels which unfortunately became unusable due to bad pixels.
Re: [Trisquel-users] T60 for libreboot - replace display
If you managed to obtain an IPS panel you probably have one of the best panels compatible with libreboot. This is only relevant for 15" T60.
Re: [Trisquel-users] T60 for libreboot - replace display
The inverter is the small board connected to the screen which provides battery/wireless/sleep indicators.
Re: [Trisquel-users] T60 for libreboot - replace display
Replacing the panel suffices (no need to replace chasis). You might need a new inverter as well that provides sufficient power to power on the screen.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lenovo thinkapds(LibreBoot )buying guide
For the X60s it seems all panels are compatible (at least according to the Libreboot link provided). The T60 however has incompatible panels.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lenovo thinkapds(LibreBoot )buying guide
Sadly, this method (extracting EDID) failed on one incompatible T60 panel I tried (the screen did not produce valid EDID even when using non-free VGA option ROM). Connecting an external monitor with usable graphics when using that panel didn't work reliably, so I cannot recommend a T60 for use with an external monitor unless you are have access to multiple panels (e.g. if you buy from a repair shop which has spare parts).
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install GCC 6.3 on trisquel 7
It's probably best also to get G++ in which case this command should do it if you want version 5 of GCC: sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/gcc gcc /usr/bin/gcc-5 100 --slave /usr/bin/g++ g++ /usr/bin/g++-5
Re: [Trisquel-users] How do I turn off the in-browser PDF viewer?
Another option is to disable the built-in PDF reader entirely: Go to about:config, search for pdfjs.disabled and set its value to true - this is also handy if you prefer opening PDF files with native viewers such as Evince.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to install GCC 6.3 on trisquel 7
tomlukeywood, I think you need to tell your operating system to use the new GCC you installed. You can see here how to get GCC 4.9 working (just adjust the command after the installation of GCC 4.9 to the GCC of your choosing): https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-install-twinkle-version-19-trisquel-7
Re: [Trisquel-users] Evolution RSS Reader Plugin
This seems to be a bug in Ubuntu 14.04 (assuming you are having an issue with this plugin in Trisquel 7): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution-rss/+bug/1296701
Re: [Trisquel-users] Parabola Gnu/Linux
You can still view YouTube if you use the previous version of ViewTube Greasemonkey script and set the user agent to an older version of Firefox (this one should work): Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/43.0 (you can do this via the User Agent Switcher add-on or by setting the user agent in general.useragent.override via about:config). Here is the previous version of ViewTube: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sebaro/ViewTube/531c2224b05fc92bef6dd9e1a4a2f0d03da8bbcd/viewtube.user.js (You should disable updates in the Greasemonkey settings for this script as the newer version no longer works.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Desktop problem - no programs
Magic Banana, you are indeed right. xrandr used to be available as a package, and I erroneously assumed it was replaced by arandr.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Desktop problem - no programs
In order to get xrandr working on a live CD you only need to install the package arandr. Then run it and assuming the internal display is called LVDS1 turn it off using this command: $ xrandr --output LVDS1 --off From there you can disable the laptop's monitor permanently using the desktop environment's graphical settings.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Firefox and Abrowser
There are other differences between the browsers other than artwork licensing, such as Abrowser removing support for HTML5 DRM and also removing telemetry (and linking to a free add-on repository).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Firefox and Abrowser
IceCat is ESR - based on Firefox 52. Abrowser is not (it's based on newer Firefox 56). Abrowser/Icecat also hide the DRM option in the main menus.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Quantum kicks ass
For me the latest abrowser (57) is very slow. Startup is fast, but it now takes me over 4 seconds to completely load a page, e.g. Slashdot. I'm using the following enabled add-ons: Dark Background and Light Text, NoScript, User Agent Switcher 1.12 (as a replacement for the regular User Agent Switcher), Violentmonkey (as Greasemonkey doesn't seem to work) and YouTube Video and Audio Downloader (as a substitute for Download Flash and Video which didn't find any videos on YouTube with JavaScript disabled). I still didn't find any replacements for DownThemAll! or FlashGot. It isn't my main browser thankfully (and it won't be as long as PulseAudio is a requirement), but it's still rather disappointing.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need a daily reminder
Putting everything inside the gnome-terminal command should work though - something like this: gnome-terminal -e "sleep 1m && gedit file"
Re: [Trisquel-users] Quantum kicks ass
Yeah I started fresh (I deleted the profile folder). I think uBlock came preinstalled on the version I got from AUR (on Hyperbola). I think the offending add-on is the color inverter - unfortunately the interface is unusable with inverted colors unlike Seamonkey. It takes a whole second to invert the colors after loading the page. On a netbook Abrowser 57 simply froze while installing add-ons. On a T60 it works OK (startup is fast but pages take 2 seconds longer than Seamonkey to load), but much slower than Seamonkey (and much less functional: no PulseAudio, no Mozplugger/mpv etc).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need a daily reminder
I think the command will work if you add the terminal programme beforehand, something like "gnome-terminal -e gedit".
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need a daily reminder
Incidentally, I can't find the upvote button either (I never used this function so I have no idea how it works) - I'd gladly return the favor and upvote Magic Banana :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Noscript installation
You should be able to download it from Mozilla's web page. If the newest one doesn't work, try installing an older release (non web extension one, 5.1.7) from there. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/versions/
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to get most up-to-date abrowser for Trisquel 6.0
This guide will give you the latest IceCat on Trisquel 6: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-install-latest-gnu-icecat-trisquel-6
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need a daily reminder
You can add Magic Banana's command to your cron jobs so it works on startup. First you need to install the cron package. Cron uses vim. If you prefer a different editor just run this command (replace the editor by your preferred editor): export EDITOR=gedit Then run the following command: crontab -e And add to the file this line: @reboot sleep 1h && gedit ~/todo.txt
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need a daily reminder
Thanks (I've never actually run graphic applications via cron - just command line ones - so I didn't know you needed to add something for graphic applications to work), so I'm guessing the command to run needs to be something like this, right? @reboot sleep 1h && DISPLAY=:0.0 gedit ~/todo.txt
Re: [Trisquel-users] Which browser should one use if one is after stability and support for existing features?
NPAPI "plugins are a source of performance problems, crashes, and security incidents": https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2015/10/08/npapi-plugins-in-firefox/ Mozilla didn't remove the entire NPAPI code base. They still support Adobe Flash. If the stability and security bothered them so much, they would have removed the entire NPAPI code base. You can watch videos in the browser using HTML5 and Flash alternatives like Gnash (if they work) but you cannot use VLC or mpv. The reason Mozilla supports HTML5 and Flash is not due to security but rather in order not to break websites which require these technologies so that users will not leave them. If they cared so much about NPAPI security, they could have improved the security of the relevant code in their browser (and worked with free software NPAPI add-ons as well so that they would be secure as well). They removed partial support for NPAPI because they didn't want to support it anymore (and because only a minority of users use NPAPI plugins which aren't Flash) and because other browsers did it as well. It's the same reason why they added H264 and DRM to the browser - other browsers did it and they were afraid users would leave them if these features weren't implemented. WebExtensions' API does not expose Firefox's internals as much as XUL/XPCOM, eases developers' life (almost no work to port from Chrome to Firefox) and, as a consequence, will get us more add-ons. Removing web extensions is more likely to alienate existing add-on developers who will switch to other browsers and not bother to create new addons (which might not even be possible). Mozilla doesn't lack add-ons, so it doesn't need add-on developers to port add-ons from other browsers. The chances are that for most users several existing add-ons will break, and they will simply switch to other browsers such as Google's browser, which will reduce Mozilla's browser's market share even further. I can imagine users refusing to install Mozilla's browser if they do not wish to use PulseAudio, since it is the only main browser not to support ALSA. GNU/Linux users already lost sound when they upgraded Mozilla's browser (you can read about it here: https://news.slashdot.org/story/17/03/17/1644211/firefox-goes-pulseaudio-only-leaves-alsa-users-with-no-sound ) and chances are they simply switched browsers if they couldn't be bothered to (or refused to) install PulseAudio. The reason Mozilla dropped support for ALSA was because it requires more work to support than Pulseaudio (and because much more work is required to support sound as Mozilla added support to new audio and video formats in recent years), so they preferred to drop support so they could focus on other features in the browser.
Re: [Trisquel-users] We need a simple YouTube solution
You can still view YouTube fine if you change the user agent to Firefox 43 32 Bit GNU/Linux using e.g. user agent switcher add-on and use an older version of ViewTube which can be downloaded from here: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sebaro/ViewTube/531c2224b05fc92bef6dd9e1a4a2f0d03da8bbcd/viewtube.user.js (This hack will probably cease to work as Google constantly updated the YouTube interface.)
[Trisquel-users] Which browser should one use if one is after stability and support for existing features?
As you know Trisquel's recent releases (6 and 7 and the upcoming 8) are long term releases. These releases tend to offer software which does not receive version updates for the available packages, however they do offer version updates for the main Mozilla browser. Many of the browsers provided by Trisquel have changed dramatically over the past few years, so finding a browser which one can update regularly without breaking exiting features (similar to a new video player which offers support for new codecs while retaining support for older codecs) is a difficult task. I'll cover the main issues with the popular browsers. Mozilla based (Abrowser/IceCat): Mozilla's decision to switch to web extensions will break many legacy add-ons. In addition, support for ALSA was dropped in recent versions and NPAPI based plugins which enabled playback of video using players such as VLC (instead of using HTML5) no longer work. At the moment IceCat is based on an older ESR (extended support release) version of Firefox which still supports these features, however they will probably be dropped in the next version. Firefox forks such as Waterfox (which currently supports ALSA) might rectify some of the issues (the latest version fails to playback video using an external player). Seamonkey based (Seamonkey/Iceape): Currently the browsers unction the same as in the past, but they will probably change as well as they base their code on newer versions of Firefox. Another Firefox fork called Pale Moon (which looks very similar to Seamonkey with the Sea Fox and GNOMErunner add-ons) promises to offer support for older features, but the browser is currently incompatible with many Mozilla add-ons (a task the developers are addressing). WebKit based: Midori hasn't seen a new release since 2015 and was recently removed by Hyperbola. When I last tested it it suffered from stability issues (it sometimes unexpectedly crashed). Epiphany/Web has changed dramatically over the years: the old extensions no longer work after the browser switched to a newer WebKit engine, JavaScript can no longer be disabled in the settings or through dconf-editor (since the developers thought this was a pointless feature to offer) and add-ons are now integrated in the browser (at the moment mostly adblock). On the bright side, ALSA is still supported, the browser can be used to access LibreCMC router's web interface which does not support SSL, and since it is part of GNOME it is actively developed. The browser might still support NPAPI plugins (they appear under about:plugins), although I couldn't test my configuration, as I use ViewTube which requires Greasemonkey which is currently missing (the developers might integrate it into a future release). NPAPI plugin support might depend on whether Apple supports it in the future in their WebKit based desktop browser (they currently do). Others: I haven't tested anything else. Other browsers might be worth checking out, however note that several are blacklisted by libre distributions due to severe issues (not just recommending non-free add-ons), such as Konquerer due to qt5-webengine being non-free. I'm not sure Iridium (Chromium based) is considered free at the moment.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Which browser should one use if one is after stability and support for existing features?
ALSA is part of Linux, the kernel, so it is probably more common than the optional sound server PulseAudio.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Midory outdated
If you are after a browser similar to Midori you can try Epiphany/Web (both use the WebKitGTK+ rendering engine).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Midory outdated
Epiphany is still available in Parabola/Hyperbola using WebKitGTK+ without geoclue2 support. https://www.hyperbola.info/packages/extra/x86_64/webkit2gtk/ Also, there is a reason why Qupzilla is not offered by Parabola and Hyperbola (and thus should not be recommended here) - it is due to freedom issues concerning qt5-webengine. https://git.hyperbola.info:50100/software/blacklist.git/plain/blacklist.txt
Re: [Trisquel-users] Midory outdated
The browser is called Qupzilla, but the rendering engine was replaced so it is in fact a different browser (apparently in Parabola the rendering engine qt5-webengine was replaced by qt5-webkit).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Mismatch: Trisquel and (you're the) Prey, Pal
brashley46, why single out the Palestinians? The same argument could be made regarding the Golan Heights (the Israeli settlers living there can use PayPal whereas the rest of the Syrians living outside of the Golan Heights cannot). I'm guessing it boils down to whether PayPal wishes to deal with the local banks located in those countries and not related to discrimination based on ethnic background.
Re: [Trisquel-users] GIMP exporting PDFs
You can also scribble on pdfs using xournal.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Computer only restarts when shutdown attempted with Trisquel 8
Can you shutdown properly using the Magic SysRq key method (if not please enable it and try to shutdown using this method)? You will need to select a key combination similar to this: Alt+Ctrl+PrtSc+R+E+I+S+U+O https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key https://askubuntu.com/questions/911522/how-can-i-enable-the-magic-sysrq-key-on-ubuntu-desktop
Re: [Trisquel-users] Computer only restarts when shutdown attempted with Trisquel 8
Since the shutdown worked correctly when using the kernel's shutdown command (it is preferable to run the full version I provided as it is a safer shutdown), I'm guessing the issues you have stem from bugs either in your desktop environment (MATE/KDE/Xfce etc), in your display manager (GDM/LightDM/XDM/SLiM etc) or in your init system (Systemd/OpenRC etc).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Computer only restarts when shutdown attempted with Trisquel 8
I also encountered a shutdown problem where the kernel shutdown worked but shutdown failed when using the terminal or the menu. I contacted the Hyperbola developer via IRC and he fixed the issue (which was that the packaged version of SliM at the time did not support OpenRC). I'm guessing you could open a bug report or contact the developer on IRC as well.
Re: [Trisquel-users] looking for a Motherboard vendor compatible with Coreboot
The laptops X60(s)/T60 can be flashed via flashrom (try to get T60 with intel graphics). Note that T60P is also supported by coreboot, but is not recommended due to ATI graphics.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Is there something we can do about Virtualbox?

Re: [Trisquel-users] How do I install Electrum in Trisquel 8?
The Electrum website requires JavaScript to run. Here's how I install Electrum. Install pip for Python 2 branch preferably 2.7 (the latest version) - the package should be called something like python2-pip or python2.7-pip. Then install the latest version from https://download.electrum.org/ using pip, e.g. sudo pip2.7 install https://download.electrum.org/2.9.3/Electrum-2.9.3.tar.gz (You might need to replace pip2.7 with the command provided by the package you installed.) (I'm recommending using the old python2-pip since I failed to install Electrum using the newer version of pip on Hyperbola. It might work for you though on Trisquel.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] is waterfox free software?
Sorry about reviving an old thread. I installed both Waterfox and Abrowser on hyperbola with ALSA but without PulseAudio and noticed that Waterfox supports ALSA unlike Abrowser, which displays an error when playing back audio files ("To play audio, you may need to install the required PulseAudio software."). Both browsers are based on recent versions of Firefox (55+).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lightweight Browser
You can try Seamonkey/Iceape - it is also a Mozilla based browser which is compatible with most add-ons. If you want a browser based on older ESR Firefox (version 52) you can try IceCat/Iceweasel. If you want a browser similar to Abrowser but with support for legacy add-ons you can try out Waterfox. Another option is the Epiphany/Web browser which like Midori is based on WebKit (but currently supports less extensions).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lightweight Browser
Qupzilla has severe freedom issues according to Hyperbola - it depends on nonfree qt5-webengine. Netsurf is very basic (it doesn't even fully support JavaScript).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Downloading videos from youtube with "$ avideo *video-url*" gives me only the sound.
GrevenGull, you can try forcing avideo to download a specific version of the video. Just run "avideo -F URL" to see available formats, and then run "avideo -f format URL" e.g. "avideo -f http-480 URL".
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser not playing sound because it now requires Pulseaudio
A simple solution is to either use IceCat/Iceweasel for audio playback (as the version of Firefox on which it is based still supports ALSA), or, if you prefer a browser based on newer Mozilla code (with support for WebExtensions), to use Waterfox instead. Other Mozilla browsers with ALSA support include Seamonkey/Iceape (but not all Firefox add-ons are compatible).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Public consultation on "open" internet
The page works fine here as well, using Seamonkey with scripts turned off in NoScript.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser not playing sound because it now requires Pulseaudio
Actually, depending on how the distro packages pulseaudio, it might in fact depend on systemd. It does in Parabola https://www.parabola.nu/packages/extra/x86_64/pulseaudio/ but not in Hyperbola (there it was packaged to depend on eudev instead of systemd): https://www.hyperbola.info/packages/extra/x86_64/pulseaudio/
[Trisquel-users] Voxware MetaSound works!
Several years ago I wondered whether this obscure format could be played back using a free audio decoder (I downloaded such a file that according to its metadata was encoded in 2000): https://trisquel.info/en/forum/voxware-metasound-playback I was pleasantly surprised yesterday to find out that the file I downloaded played back perfectly on Hyperbola GNU/Linux using MPlayer and mpv without using non-free binary codecs. Apparently, FFmpeg developed an encoder for this format in version 2.2 (which was released in 2014), probably 10+ years after this format was commonly used for distributing online audio, and both MPlayer and mpv apparently use FFmpeg's decoder to playback the audio. You can find a few samples in this format here to see if your video player supports it: http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/A-codecs/VoxWare/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Any plans to dump systemd ?
Hyperbola is the closest you will find to updated Trisquel without systemd - it is based on Arch (with Debian patches) without being a rolling release, so packages will usually only receive security updates and long term versions are preferred (e.g. a libre version of Iceweasel ESR as opposed to Abrowser).
Re: [Trisquel-users] The "install extension" link on the wiki-page for the Abrowser addon "Self-Destructing Cookies" not working for me
Like Random Agent Spoofer, Self-Destructing Cookies was not ported to the WebExtensions API, the only one Firefox (and derivatives such as Abrowser) 47 and later support. I think you made a typographical error and meant Firefox 57 (Quantum) instead of Firefox 47.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel on non-x86 systems
Trisquel has never supported other architectures even if those offered freer computers, such as the Lemote Yeelong MIPS laptop (which was supported by gNewSense). This might have been partially due to Ubuntu focusing on x86 releases compared to Debian. I understand the logic regarding the need to leave the x86 architecture. However, a non-rolling libre distribution should first and foremost provide timely releases with up to date software/libraries. Trisquel has suffered greatly from postponed releases which has led to users migrating to other libre distributions such as Parabola and Hyperbola (or simply using other distributions with minimal amount of non-free packages). I think this should be the primary concern of Trisquel before it considers adding support for other architectures which most users will not use until computers using those architectures are sold in their local computer shops.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel on non-x86 systems
Shouldn't Trisquel focus on timely releases for x86 (which most people use) before supporting other architectures? The latest version of Trisquel is based on a two and a half old release of Ubuntu (which means a lot of software is outdated). The priority should be on releasing a new version of Trisquel based on Ubuntu 18.04 before supporting other less popular architectures.
Re: [Trisquel-users] FSDG and pip
I agree with onpon4. In addition, pip does not require cryptographic package signing using tools such as GPG so you could be downloading altered packages if someone breaks into the PyPI website and replaces a package with a malicious version. PyPI did in fact contain malicious packages in the past - the issue was reported online, e.g. here: https://developers.slashdot.org/story/17/09/16/2030229/pythons-official-repository-included-10-malicious-typo-squatting-modules Of course the package signing problem can also occur on code repositories such as GitLab as well if those do not impose GPG signing of commits (which I gather most do not). Of course the GNU/Linux package managers do not solve the problem if they grab code from such code repositories without verifying the cryptographic signatures of the original developers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cannot get Gmail time to equal local time on my Trisquel OS
Gmail is a proprietary email client. Icedove is a good free/libre one. You can communicate with Google's email servers with it. Gmail has a basic HTML interface which doesn't require running JavaScript.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 install didn't detect my monitor, gave wrong resolution.
It's not just missing from Ubuntu but from Debian too starting with Debian 8 (Jessie.) And that is why people using SIS graphics cannot upgrade to Debian Jessie, as reported for instance in this post: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=7=133773
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 install didn't detect my monitor, gave wrong resolution.
The issue might be that the package xserver-xorg-video-sis is missing in the Ubuntu release on which Trisquel 8 is based (16.04) but appears in the Ubuntu release on which Trisquel 7 is based (14.04) as you can see here: https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=xserver-xorg-video-sis Have you tried Trisquel 7 to see if this package is the cause of your issues? If so, you might need to compile it manually in Trisquel 8.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 install didn't detect my monitor, gave wrong resolution.
The last post in this thread will probably solve the issue for the OP (these are instructions regarding compilation of SIS driver from source): https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2371684 sudo apt-get install build-essential xorg-dev xutils-dev automake libtool cd ~/ #or whatever directory you want to use for this build wget http://xorg.freedesktop.org/releases/individual/driver/xf86-video-sis-0.10.9.tar.bz2 tar -xjf xf86-video-sis-0.10.9.tar.bz2 cd xf86-video-sis-0.10.9/ autoconf automake ./configure --prefix=/usr/local make sudo make install

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
loldier, I agree with t3g that it might be better to prioritize the release of Trisquel 9 over releasing both Trisquel 8 and Trisquel 9, since Trisquel 8 is based on an almost 2 year old system. Since Ubuntu LTS releases are supported for 5 years, Trisquel does not need to offer all the versions, but when it does release a new version it is preferable that it is based on an up to date release so that once installed the user can use it for almost 5 years. Trisquel 8 will only be usable for up to 3 years because it is based on a 2 year old release.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
I agree with t3g that Trisquel should be based on an up to date version of Ubuntu, so that it will be compatible with new software and libraries (without requiring messing around with unofficial repositories). t3g, if you need more up to date software libraries and packages in the meantime you can try the stable Hyperbola distribution (based on Arch with Debian patches but not a rolling release) or the rolling release Parabola. Waiting for releases of Trisquel, which has cut down on releases since version 6 (beforehand they also had non-LTS releases such as 5.5) to focus on long term releases, and has also stopped providing releases in a timely manner (Trisquel 8 should have come out half a year after the Ubuntu it is based on was released which is almost 18 months ago), seems a wasted effort at this point in time.
Re: [Trisquel-users] ebook reader advice
kobo uses DRM on some/all of their ebooks, so it's best to avoid getting ebooks from there. https://www.kobo.com/help/en-US/article/3501/using-adobe-digital-editions
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why doesn't Trisquel 8 use Iridium browser as default browser?
Because it already has a free software browser (Abrowser) which Trisquel's developer maintains (which includes removing suggestions of non-free add-ons, removing DRM support, and providing a free add-on repository). Making Iridium completely free would likely also require some work (such as maintaining a list of free add-ons and ensuring support for DRM is removed).
Re: [Trisquel-users] SoundConverter won't convert .wma to .mp3
You can try FFmpeg to convert. There is also a GUI (WinFF).
Re: [Trisquel-users] SoundConverter won't convert .wma to .mp3
M4A is a container which can also contain lossy formats such as AAC. If you need to batch convert, just use a for loop such as this (to convert m4a to flac): for i in *.m4a; do ffmpeg -i "$i" "`basename "$i" .m4a`.flac"; done;

Pale Moon also contains this clause: Unofficial branding ("New Moon") as supplied in the source code may be used for unendorsed binaries at all times. Thusly branded binaries with the New Moon logo and product name are not subject to the endorsement and exception rules as set out in previous points of this license and may be freely distributed in altered or unaltered form, subject to the Mozilla Public License as regards source code changes and availability. This permission does, however, not include any rights or license to the Pale Moon name and logo that may still be present in the resulting unofficially branded binaries.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Video driver for a newbie
Recent versions of Virtualbox have freedom issues and have thus been removed from Trisquel. Your favorite search engine should provide you ample assistance if you search for Virtualbox graphics adapter drivers for Linux. You can try Trisquel in freedom-respecting hypervisor software such as QEMU/KVM instead of Virtualbox.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Arabic/Hebrew in LibreOffice
If you need more up to date software than what is offered by Trisquel you should consider using a distribution with more up to date software, such as Parabola or Hyperbola. Libreoffice can be updated via PPA. These commands will add it and then you can install the version you want via apt-get. $sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa $sudo apt-get update
Re: [Trisquel-users] Arabic/Hebrew in LibreOffice
Actually they only only need one thing to be learned: compiling from source. That's useful for small packages which don't require new libraries, but not for larger ones such as WebKit in which case my original advise still stands.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Arabic/Hebrew in LibreOffice
I don't think it's helpful to tell people to rebase their entire working environment over one little snag. That leads to a dangerous game of constantly re-installing and never getting anything done. Note that there are lots of threads about updating software to newer versions in the forums (recently someone asked about updating Ethereum), so it should be pointed out that Trisquel has old software some of which does not receive security updates unless it is from Ubuntu's main repository, and that one should not in general mess around with upgrading packages and libraries via PPA or by compiling from source to the root directory as those are not supported by Trisquel (e.g. it can lead to issues when installing other packages which depend on older libraries).

Re: [Trisquel-users] connesct to network (wifi) with Lenovo ThinkPad e504
Which wireless card are you using? You can the card by running the command "lspci | grep Wireless".
Re: [Trisquel-users] connesct to network (wifi) with Lenovo ThinkPad e504
The card requires proprietary firmware to run however there have been reports about some Realtek cards working without firmware on recent linux-libre kernels, so you could try a more recent kernel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebox (with Coreboot) - Hello Again
There's quite a lot of proprietary code being run by libreboot such as CPU microcode (without updates), EC firmware, SSD/HDD firmware etc. Whenever they find a free replacement they use it, but the computer is far from 100 percent free when using libreboot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebox (with Coreboot) - Hello Again
The free native graphics in libreboot seems to be a hack which doesn't work well for certain use cases - e.g. I cannot use a T60 laptop with Intel graphics connected to an external monitor via DVI connection after disassembling the laptop's monitor which is my current setup.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Librebox (with Coreboot) - Hello Again
Not all coreboot features are necessarily malicious, e.g. the proprietary VGA option ROM which supports more laptop monitors than the free libreboot native graphics implementation.
