[Bug 1795150] [NEW] Canon PIXMA MG4250 unhandled by system-config-printer
Public bug reported: Let us start by the beginning, and describe my printer’s configuration: it is a Canon Pixma MG4250, connected by Wi-Fi to my internet box, and thus available on my local network. On XUbuntu 18.04.1 LTS (as returned by 'lsb_release -rd'), it is detected by system-config-printer (1.5.11-1ubuntu2, from http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/main amd64 Packages, as said by 'apt-cache policy system-config-printer'), which by default chooses automatically the corresponding driver, by fails at last step to define the new printer and returns cups-error-internal-error. My first reaction was of course to check the Web for others having a similar problem, and the way they solved it if any did, but I did not find anything relevant. I then tried something else: instead of choosing the automatically detected printer, I gave the URI found on XUbuntu 16.04, which is cnijnet:/ followed by (what I think to be) the MAC address of the printer. I then have to choose a driver (where system-config-printer automatically did it in previous method), but adding the printer still fails at last step, this time with cups-error-not-possible. I found a turnaround, but it is not straightforward: I applied the method which worked on XUbuntu 16.04, which is to use Canon driver (from https://www.canon.fr/support/consumer_products/products/fax__multifunctionals/inkjet/pixma_mg_series/pixma_mg4250.aspx?type=drivers). I choose the Debian archive from their page (https://www.canon.fr/support/consumer_products/products/fax__multifunctionals/inkjet/pixma_mg_series/pixma_mg4250.aspx?type=drivers==Linux%20(64-bit)), and tried to install it. However, it needed three packages (libpango1.0, libpng12 and libtiff14) while only the first is still available on 18.04 (the two others are obsolete). A web search indicated that older packages can be used, I thus got those of the previous LTS (xenius) on the Ubuntu archive site (https://packages.ubuntu.com - but the last one, libtiff14, needs a direct access to tiff directory of the French archive site (http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/t/tiff), as the library is not referenced, only its dev part). Once those package are saved and installed (with a sudo dpkg -i ...), Canon’s installation script works fine, and adds the printer. I still have to verify whether printing works (but it should be OK). I applied the method which worked on XUbuntu 16.04, which is to use Canon driver. I choose the Debian archive from their page, and tried to install it. It was difficult to ask apt and Synaptic to install a artful package under bionic, but I managed to succeed. To get as result that it was not able to install this package (aseba_1.6.0-2) on bionic, as the QT4 dependencies cannot be installed - Stéphane mentioned it in #2. I will probably (but not too soon) reinstall on the 1.6.0-3.1~build1 package (to get QT5 dependencies), and compile (I was hopping to avoid that) the missing binaries... [Bug 1698743] [NEW] Directory/file selection not clear
Public bug reported: Hello. In your application, you choose to separate the background image selection in two parts: first selecting a directory and then selecting the file. The directory selection does not make any change, only the file selection does. This is IMHO confusing, particularly when a regular random change of the background image is asked. In that case, the file selection is not (so) important. I think you should add a popup dialog, when a new directory is selected but no file chosen, as this leads to information loss, saying something like: "Directory change will only be taken into account if you choose a file. Do you want to cancel directory selection or choose a file?" It took me twice about half an hour to understand your application's behaviour, as I only need to use it every two years, when I upgrade from a distribution to the next. Adding this popup would be a great help for me, and certainly for other users also. I may even do it myself, if you tell me where in your code file selection is done (this could be done in about 15 minutes, I guess). Here come the news for today: the greeter's aspect changed, showing two resolutions (my external and laptop screens do not have the same proportions) displayed on screen (as it did with 14.04, the background is displayed twice on the larger - external - screen, with both proportions), while it was only displayed once since the upgrade. The problem is that, once I clicked to get the display, I was unable to write on the login pop-up: I could select a region (by a left double click) in the login box, but typing on the keyboard had no effect!.. I started to click here and there, hopping to solve the problem, and succeeded: I had to click on the top bar (with date, language and accessibility selections, ...) to get back to only one display of the background, and be able to type the login and password again. I hope my story would help, either by the turnarounds if someone else get a similar problem, or to locate the bug(s) and solve it (them). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1610543 Title: After upgrading to 16.04, greeter does not handle double screen anymore To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1610543/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1610543] Re: After upgrading to 16.04, greeter does not handle double screen anymore
Hello. No surprise: the top process is... lightdm-gtk-greeter. But I discovered that it is the case this morning (I will have to check again). And I found at last an easy turnaround: the screen is refreshed correctly as soon as... I click with the mouse! I did not try before (I did not think it could be so simple). As a consequence, this bug is minor (as long as the click works - I will come back if it doesn't). [Bug 1610543] Re: After upgrading to 16.04, greeter does not handle double screen anymore
OK, a few additional info: on 4 tries, I had only 1 unexpected sleep, and only 1 display of the greeter (with bad dimensions). Moreover, each time I disconnect and loose the display (black screen with only cursor), the fan starts to work. I will check whether the load increases (with a top in TTY 1), and which process is on top, and send you the results tomorrow. [Bug 1610543] Re: After upgrading to 16.04, greeter does not handle double screen anymore
Hello. There has been a few changes (even though I don't know which update solved these problems): about this bug, the main change is that the laptop doesn't turn to sleep anymore when I undock it. I however still have the main problem. I can add that everything is OK after the first login: if I disconnect, the greeter is displayed (with bad dimensions - right of the screen is missing).
[Bug 1605813] Re: lock screen freezes while trying to wake from suspend
Wow, that's a fast correction: for my laptop, the bug appeared yesterday, and was solved today! I am back to only one button "sleep" (under the three "logout", "reboot" or "shutdown" - sorry if the labels are not correct, these are raw translation of the French labels I get) which works, instead of the two ("sleep" and "deep sleep") which froze the laptop. The same problem appears to me after upgrading to 16.04 with an Intel card (described below), both with sleep and deep sleep: when I wake the computer, I have a normal box in the centre of the screen, the rest is darker, and no login box... [Bug 1610543] [NEW] After upgrading to 16.04, greeter does not handle double screen anymore
Public bug reported: Hello. I upgraded my laptop from 14.04 to 16.04 (Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS) a few days ago. Since then, the login screen doe not appear anymore when I have a dual monitor (either connected to VGA port or docked via VGA or HDMI), both screen are black, showing only the cursor. When I switch back to one monitor (disconnecting the VGA monitor or undocking), the laptop turns to sleep (?!?). After waking it up, I got the screen, can login, connect back the second monitor and activate it (with xrandr). If I connect the second monitor when the computer sleeps, and wake it up, I then have the display, but without the login window (it appears as soon as I disconnect the monitor). Public bug reported: Hi. I upgraded my XUbuntu from 13.10 to 14.04 this summer, and since then Network-Manager (NM in the following) seems unable to pop-up a dialog to ask for a password. As a consequence: - I cannot modify my connections, some (mostly WPA enterprise) are shown with greyed (cannot be changed?) and missing data; - I cannot connect to wifi as connection password is not asked. It is clearly a configuration problem: everything works well with a live USB. Everything was also fine on 13.10. I already reinstalled NM and gnome-keyring, without any success. And I'd prefer not to reinstall all, as I have a HUGE number of modifications to do (addition and suppression of packages). Is there a simple way to script that? I have a turnaround: - nm-connection-editor works well only if I start it with a sudo (otherwise, I have the behaviour described above); - once the connection password is added in nm-connection-editor (I usually ask it to be entered for each connection), I can use a sudo nmcli con up id '...' to connect, but the password is not saved (for next boot). [Bug 1276072] Re: Language selection always falls back to English
Hi, thanks for the fix. I just have a question: what do you mean by fix a 14.04 install? I do not have enough disk space to have two systems on my computer: if I want to try 14.04, I have to upgrade to it, and I am not used to do it before a few months after the announcement, nor happy to try (as they are usually a lot of remaining bugs and my computer is my working tool - I need it to work well). I could perhaps try to get a 1 GB USB key, and try it on it in persistent mode. [Bug 1276072] Re: Language selection always falls back to English
Well, after investigation, I have to use my special id account: I need it for NFS and autofs to work at my lab. I removed the new account, using users-admin, but its configuration file in /var/lib/AccountsService/users/ was not removed (I did it myself). The two new bugs are to a real problem , but it would be interesting to understand why lightdm behave so. I also think the language selection to be a lightdm bug: the system language of /etc/default/locale is not taken into account (before any user is selected - the fact that the language is not changed for system users is after all normal); using the language selector allows to get the right language... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1276072 Title: Language selection always falls back to English To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/+bug/1276072/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1276072] Re: Language selection always falls back to English
Worse and worse! Of course, the user list helps because the user selected automatically is the only non system user, for which language setting is OK (explain me why) even though it is not written in its file in /var/lib/AccountsService/users/. But two new bugs appear: 1- the background image set in /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf is not used for this user (uid 1000), while it is for the system user (if I choose Other and type its login); moreover, the image is removed if I select back the normal user; 2- I have my laptop on a deck, connected to an external screen, and thus have two images of different resolutions on the wider (external) screen; the resolutions are correct for the default image (the one of XUbuntu, used for the normal user) but not for the system user (lower size image is stretched to the other's height, but not width). Fine, we now have 3 bugs (system language should definitely be the one set in /etc/default/locale, not English). The only positive point (I forgot to mention it earlier) is that if language is changed once (either manually or because the normal user has been selected), it remains to the selected value.

Well, the point is not to make it hard for myself (it's not so hard), but for anybody else who would like to login (this is my lab's recommendation). You say It should be the user language, but it can't be, not before I select a user (or enter a login, and I mean the login only, not the password). And definitely no, it won't help to disable the language selector: I won't be able to correct accountsservice's wrong selection of the language. I will try a few connections with the users list and without the language selector, but I would be *very* surprised if it changes anything.

OK, uid is a part of the problem (as I do not use the lab's NIS, and as mount procedures make mappings, I will change my uid). However, a part of the problem remains: why does the greeter falls back to the default language (English) instead of the system language (defined as French/France in /etc/default/locale)?
Well, normal/abnormal uid is not the point: before I enter my login, the greeter selects English as language (at login, as well as after any connection - the one with uid 1000 or the other one). Moreover, I now have the Language and FormatsLocale in /var/lib/AccountsService/users/scheuer, but the language is not set when I enter this account's login, while they are not in the other's account file, for which the language is set correctly. A new line appeared in these files, indicating SystemAccount=true/false (true when uid 1000, false otherwise).
Well, I do prefer to hide users and show manual login (this is my work laptop, am I paranoiac?). Whatsoever, it does not change a lot: before entering login (or selecting it, it should be the same), the language selected is English (it should be the system one, i.e. French, don't you think?).
Sniff! Sorry to tell you that: it does not work! The point is that the file /var/lib/AccountsService/users/scheuer is rewritten (without the language settings) at each connection. Too bad! And I don't understand either why the language setting does not fall back to the system language, defined in /etc/default/locale, but to the default one (English). It may be an installation problem: if I remember well, I installed a Xubuntu 12.04, and upgraded to 12.10, 13.04 then 13.10 (but it worked quite well under 13.04 - I did not have this problem, at least).

About the message Greeter sets language fr_FR in/var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log , the next line is Writing /home/scheuer/.dmrc and indeed ~/.dmrc contains both language and session definitions. [Bug 1276072] Re: Language selection always falls back to English
Yes, you've got the point: then language line is missing in /var/lib/AccountsService/users/scheuer. Moreover, /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log talks of a /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log, which says that directories /usr/share/lightdm/sessions and /usr/share/lightdm/remote-sessions (this is less important, I don't want to accept remote sessions) are missing. I attach all that. Thanks, I now only need either the syntax to correct the file /var/lib/AccountsService/users/scheuer, or a way to get AccountsService to do it (should I add a /usr/share/lightdm directory?). ** Attachment added: log_as.tbz https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/1276072/+attachment/3970958/+files/log_as.tbz -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1276072 Title: Language selection always falls back to English To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/1276072/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1276072] Re: Language selection always falls back to English
Well, after a few complementary tests, I found out that this is a lightdm bug! In fact, on one computer (using Xubuntu), the session's options, as session's type (Unity, Gnome, xfce, openbox, ...) and language (!), are not kept from one session to the next, as it used to be, and need to set manually at each connection. On the other computer (using Lubuntu), only the type option seems to be kept, not the language which has to be set manually... I did not find any bug report about lightdm. Can this bug be changed, or should I create a new one? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1276072 Title: Language selection always falls back to English To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/1276072/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1276072] Re: Language selection always falls back to English
Well, the point is that my ~/.pam_environment is modified (even if it is write-protected, funny) when I connect through the session manager (which is lightdm), and precisely at that moment (I did monitor this on tty1), but not when I connect on console mode (on tty1, for example). And even now that I found the way to correct the language setting (by selecting it in the language selector of the session manager), I have to do it at each connection (it is set back to English) - in fact, I found that the session's type is correctly kept on both my computers, only the language is a problem. Otherwise (if it let English), the two first lines of my ~/.pam_environment are modified (to LANGUAGE=en \\ LANG=en_US.UTF-8). I add an archive with my current versions of /etc/environment and ~/.pam_environment. And, at last, even now that I corrected the language setting, I found out that some translation are missing (update manager, synaptic, Gimp, evince, emacs, calculator, ...). I think I did not have this problem when I connected before (but I may be mistaken). The language setting does not seems correct, in fact: gnome-language-selector still shows English on top, and French at the bottom (and thus grey)... I however have some (about a half) of the main menu items in French... As a conclusion, it only partially works with my turnaround. ** Attachment added: envir.tbz https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/1276072/+attachment/3969887/+files/envir.tbz -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1276072 Title: Language selection always falls back to English To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/1276072/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1276072] Re: Language selection always falls back to English
OK, you're right, the problems came from this typo. Everything is fine, now (I did modified manually the ~/.pam_environment because the language selection at the session opening did not correct it once - I don't know why it works now). I just insist on the fact that a write-protected ~/.pam_environment does not break anything: it is modified whatsoever (I will try it again, but I am quite confident on it). And I still have to select the correct language at connection, it is not kept from one session to the next.

I confirm both points (no problem with write-protected ~/.pam_environment, still have to select French). [Bug 1276072] [NEW] Language selection always falls back to English
Public bug reported: I upgraded two amd64 computers from 13.04 to 13.10, and discovered on both that the language is set to English (whereas I selected French language at the beginning of the upgrade). Moreover, each time I set it back to French, dragging both French (France and Canada) and some English (UK US) on top of the default English in the language selection list, default English comes back on top at next login. I even tried to modify my .pam_environment (in console mode) and the /etc/environment to set fr_FR as the default, no way: gnome-language- selector seems to force default English as default at each connection! Well, I have a problem which seems similar: compiz freezes often at destop change (I use the cube rotation), and may be (most of the time) unfreezed by switching to the console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) then back (Ctrl+Alt+F7). However, this happen on a first DELL with a NVidia video card (and there was no problem with 11.10), but also on a recent one with an Intel card. As a consequence, this has nothing IMHO in common with bug #982485. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/985820 Title: [nvidia 295.40] Xorg freeze or compiz freeze To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/985820/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1026137] [NEW] mplayer/mencoder plays (undetected) mute for films/music with codec 0x50 0x55 (mp3lib)
Public bug reported: When playing either a music or a film with mp3 audio, mplayer uses mp3lib but does not generate any sound, and mencoder transcodes the film into a mute one. Forcing the audio codec ffmp3 does not change anything. Other codecs do not work: mplayer Cannot find codec for audio format 0x50 (for films) or 0x55 (for musics) - Audio: no sound. VLC handle correctly both the music or the film. Both mplayer and mencoder are version 2:1.0~rc4.dfsg1+svn34540-1, from http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/universe amd64 Packages.
