[Bug 877318] Re: Nanny not working in Oneiric and Precise

2012-05-15 Thread Peter Wagner
Hello,

tried the patch in Precise, without any effect on behaviour. What I did (the
first time in life I work with a patch):
* added a file xhost.desktop as adviced in #7
* copied patchfile to /home/me/Stažené/nanny-find-process-fix.patch
* moved (cd) to /usr/share/pyshared/nanny/daemon/ (the only location I found
the file on my system)
* run successfully (patching file ...) sudo patch
/home/wagner/Stažené/nanny-find-process-fix.patch

- error looks the same as before, without patch.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Mounting NFS shares permanently

2012-05-12 Thread Tyler J. Wagner
On 2012-05-12 10:52, mac wrote:
Does your NAS only support NFSv3?

I doubt the NFS version is the issue: I've got four 10.04 systems mounting
these same NFS shares at startup perfectly correctly.

I asked that because the Ubuntu Setup guide I linked to refers to NFSv4. If
you follow that exactly, your setup will work.

My setup is upgraded from 10.10 (through each intermediate release) on the
server, and is a new install on the client.

portmap mountd nfsd statd lockd rquotad : 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.11
portmap mountd nfsd statd lockd rquotad : ALL

Because portmap is deprecated now, my hosts.deny file simple has
 rpcbind : ALL

Ah, I see I need to add rpcbind to that list myself. However, other daemons
including statd are running, so they must be on the list too. Try adding
all of the above to your hosts.{allow,deny}.

But the problem is not that I'm locked out of the shares: rather it's that
'mount.nfs' appears to think that rpc.statd is not running (which can't
depend on what's in hosts.deny/allow, can it???).

Or it's not able to access the daemon because it is denied by default? Not
sure about that behaviour.

I must say, I'm a bit surprised that no one else here has experienced this
problem with setting up NFS on 12.04 (and - because there are real
engineers here who know acres more than me - solved it).

As I said, using the Ubuntu setup guide works fine. Try following it before
using your own steps, or switching to CIFS.

Regards,
Tyler

I mount NFS shares (served by a ReadyNAS) on my Ubuntu clients - all five
of which were, till recently, running 10.04. As a means of getting
familiar with Unity, etc, I recently put 12.04 on to one machine. (A clean
install, as the attempted upgrade a few weeks ago failed.)

I don't have the same setup, but perhaps my notes can help. I use Ubuntu
server as a NAS and Ubuntu desktop as a client. The client mounts the NAS
via NFSv4 at boot via /etc/fstab. I used this guide:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo

Does your NAS only support NFSv3?

Today, I got round to setting up the NFS shares on this 12.04 system in my
usual way: create mount points in /media; install portmap and
nfs-common; lockdown portmap; add the shares to fstab.

Of course, I discovered at once that portmap is deprecated, and rpcbind
installed instead. So for the lockdown, I simply added rpcbind : ALL to
/etc/hosts.deny, and rpcbind : NFS server IP address to
/etc/hosts.allow. Otherwise, everything corresponds with what is working
under 10.04 on the other four machines.

My hosts.allow/deny look like so:

portmap mountd nfsd statd lockd rquotad : 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.11
portmap mountd nfsd statd lockd rquotad : ALL

Perhaps you need to list statd here?

[Bug 996706] [NEW] Format of locations always 12H when using custom time format in datetime applet

2012-05-08 Thread Tyler Wagner
Public bug reported:

When using a custom format of the datetime indicator using dconf-editor,
other locations are displayed in 12H time.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Click on the date indicator, and select Time Date Settings.

2. Clock tab

3. Choose Locations button

4. Select some locations

5. Using dconf-editor, set
/com/canonical/indicator/datetime/time-format = custom
/com/canonical/indicator/datetime/custom-time-format = %a %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S %Z

6. Click on the datetime indicator. Location times are displayed in 12H
format, regardless of the current locale or other settings.

Using 24H format works, but then I cannot set a custom format. How about a
location-custom-time-format string?

For instance, right-click-Minimize all windows? Or hover over icon and
roll mouse wheel to roll focus through windows? I miss a lot of that
from Gnome 2 and the new Launcher makes some apps very hard to use.

If not then create a .desktop file to launch it with, then that will
appear in the launcher. In that case arguably it is the app that is
pea-brained for not coming with a .desktop file to launch it. Or
perhaps there is one but you have not found it.

This is harder with Unity in 12.04. You cannot pin something from the dash
anymore, nor does Unity find .desktop files in ~/.local/share/applications
automatically.

However, you can create a launcher in ~.local/share/applications, give it
an icon, and execute the launcher in nautilus. Then once it is running,
right-click on the launcher icon and Lock to Launcher. After that Unity
seems to index ~/.local/share/applications (or at least that one application).

You still cannot launch from the CLI (with an icon), thanks to xdg-open's
never-ending bug.

Alan, I really, really feel your pain. I just left Maverick as well. I had
hoped Unity was mature enough, but it feels like KDE 4.0 all over again.

The Expo (Super W) does :-)

However, I then minimised my app and the little arrow disappeared from my
Talend launcher icon and clicking on it it tries to start a new instance of
 the app.

I really, really hate to suggest this, but log out and in again.

I've seen that random behaviour too. Alt-tab and the arrows on the icons
are inconsistent, and sometimes my hot-corners for Show-Workspaces don't
work. When that happens, logging out and in again, or restarting unity
(unity --replace ) resolves it.

[Bug 830438] Re: blurry indicator icon

2012-04-28 Thread Wagner Volanin
This bug happens because the indicator-power does not use the helper
functions from libindicators, but instead tries to draw the icons
itself. The attached patch fixes this. It is a little intrusive, because
I also changed the icon-name selection logic that, with all respect, is
a mess in the original code.

A compiled package can be found in my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~volanin/+archive/ppa
The package in my PPA also displays the percentage instead of the time, so be
aware.

[Bug 763052] Re: Ubuntu can't boot on nvidia GeForce GT240 with nouveau drivers

2012-04-18 Thread Peter Wagner
After filing a new bug #973789, I came to the result, that the causes for my
trouble (Precise install additionally to Lucid only through the alternate CD,
now it runs only in rescue mode) is the graphics driver (I have a GeForce GT
240), for details see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/973789
Maybe there is an additional problem, as my trial to install the proprietary
NVidia driver, working in graphical rescue mode, failed.
Now I don't know how to continue: repeat the install from scratch according to
Eduard's recommendations, or replace my actual driver by an appropriate one?
But what is the actual driver, and which one to use now? nouveau is said to be
not working on boot (#21), but it is recommended to install nouveau (#21), and
the final target is apparently to end up with VESA (which I think is the driver
in my rescue environment). Sorry for my beginner's kidding, but I have tried to
install the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver by several ways.
For the time being I still work on Lucid, but I am eager to update to Precise.

Thanks a lot!

[Bug 973789] Re: Precise beta install crashes from cd after boot

2012-04-17 Thread Peter Wagner
Regarding the fact that I do have a NVidia GeForce GT240, the symptomatics
desribed above might be linked to a misfunction reported in bug # 763052. It
seems that I can work in recovery mode due to the nouveau VESA driver, which
was there without my involvement (as recommended in the second bug, so no need
to install xserver-
xorg-video-nouveau).
After a recommendation I have tried to install the restricted NVidia driver,
but without success (see the attached jockey log file).

[Bug 973789] Re: Precise beta install crashes from cd after boot

2012-04-14 Thread Peter Wagner
Inbetween I have tried the alternate CD, also beta, downloaded 4/15.
Install ran without disruption. Previous OS get started without trouble.

First start (and any further) of Precise began with a blank violet
screen (for a second), followed by an introduction screen (20 secs?),
with four horizontal bars in violet-black-violet-black, separated by
tiny dotted coloured lines, which slightly move (seemingly a reminder of
the moving dots of the welcome-screen). Then a completely black screen
without any sign of life. CTRL+ALT+PrtScrn+REISUB shuts the system down.

In recovery mode, the system boots correctly and enables a glimpse into
Ubiquity. I updated everything, but a full start rendered the symptoms
described above.

I enter some logs which may help with finding the problem. Can add any
more, of course.

Two months ago I had also problems with install, then of the 11.10
version, and to a completely different computer for a friend, but with
the same monitor. It has seemed to me a problem of the intel video card,
which didn't cope with my new monitor BENQ GL 2240, and after a
reduction of the screen size, the system worked fine, without these
strange effects (stripes across the screen, disappearing letters etc.).
With my friend, my installation works without problems, with another
monitor.

[Bug 839157] Re: Bluetooth applet (OBEX send/browse) does not work since Natty (after bluetoothd 4.84 exactly)

2012-04-12 Thread Daniel Wagner
This should now be fixed with a kernel patch. The 3.3 and newer contains the
fix and for the stable
branches wait for those two commits to appear in the next release.

3.2-stable review patch. If anyone has any objections, please let me know.

commit 18daf1644e634bae951a6e3d4d19d89170209762 upstream

Commit 330605423c fixed l2cap conn establishment for non-ssp remote
devices by not setting HCI_CONN_ENCRYPT_PEND every time conn security
is tested (which was always returning failure on any subsequent
security checks).

However, this broke l2cap conn establishment for ssp remote devices
when an ACL link was already established at SDP-level security. This
fix ensures that encryption must be pending whenever authentication
is also pending.

[Bug 973789] Re: Precise beta install crashes from cd after boot

2012-04-07 Thread Peter Wagner
Just a low quality (sorry) picture (screenshot is not possible of
course) from my forth boot from the install CD.

You can see different segment of my Lucid-desktop. It is probably the
last screen before the switch-off before the trial of the install CD,
because you can see the lower part of the switch-off window on the right
up section. And possibly it is just the content of the graphic card, so
Precise finally doesn't take this information from the Lucid partition
on the hard disk.

[Bug 974776] Re: User-configured wallpaper setting wiped out after today's updates

2012-04-05 Thread Jason Wagner
Grah, I just realized I have a completely new set of wallpapers. I
guess that's why they went missing.

I would hope this would be handled more gracefully, but since the
wallpapers are not going to be moved, removed, updated or replaced after
release, I suppose there isn't much of a bug here.

I filed this against gnome-shell, but I just applied today's updates to
a VM with Unity:

After installing the updates, the Unity bar (and dash, when exposed)
turned purple.

After a reboot, the wallpaper was now black.

Would be interesting to see if other user profiles on the same machine
would also be affected.

[Bug 973133] [NEW] Finger touch input is not registered correctly

2012-04-04 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 64bit on an HP Elitebook 2760p. This
occurs under Unity and gnome-shell, and I imagine any other DE. I am
not sure what software provides the functionality I am discussing below,
so please assign the bug accordingly.

What is expected: When I use my finger tips to interact with the
system, I expect the cursor to move to where my touch was registered.
If I tap, I expect a click to be sent at the location where I tapped.
If I tap and drag, I expect the cursor to follow my input.

What happens instead: The cursor does not first move to where the tap
was registered. When I tap, a click is sent to whatever happens to be
below where the cursor is currently positioned. Tap and drag, again,
starts from the location where the cursor was previously located, and
uses a strange acceleration (the mouse cursor moves further away the
faster I drag). In clearer terms, the touchscreen is behaving less like
a tablet and more like a big, dumb trackpad.

Despite these issues, the system's included stylus still functions
exactly as expected.

This was working as expected earlier in beta, and changed sometime after
mid-February, when I originally installed Ubuntu from a then-current
daily ISO. I had not used the installation for some time and recently
discovered the issue. I had other issues with that installation, so I
thought it wouldbe best to reinstall from today's daily ISO and ran
'aptitude full-upgrade'. The issue persists. Therefore, I believe this
is a regression, and not something specific to my machine.

[Bug 973789] [NEW] Precise beta install crashes from cd after boot

2012-04-04 Thread Peter Wagner
Public bug reported:

Sorry for filing it with ubiquity, but the bug is linked to the
install process of the beta version of Precise Pangolin, and I had to
choose a package for Apport.

Steps:
1 downloaded live CD from http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/ by April 2nd,
2 boot with live CD
3 ubuntu loading page appears, dots moving
4 funny welcome page appears: parts of my standard Lucid Lynx desktop,
strangely shifted across the wallpaper. Let's say, the upper left quarter at
the lower right, etc. system goes on working for a while, then freezes. no
input, even not the REISUB sequence. why does the live CD install take info
from my harddisk???
5 switch off power, new boot, I repeat steps 2 + 3
6 very colourful screen with many pixels, as if taking a random bitmap and
displaying by the graphic card. comp seems to work for some seconds (CD player
active), no input accepted
7 the same like steps 5 + 6

I see no chance to intervene, i.e. to make a mistake.

Where can I find logs to post? Those in the /var/log/installer are very
old. Can I stop the process?

No hurry, I'm safely and happily working on Ubuntu 10.04 and open for
testing.

[Bug 973971] [NEW] vsync is not enabled, despite what CCSM tells me

2012-04-04 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

from 'lspci':
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core
Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)

Was using DOSBox earlier and I noticed that vsync was not enabled. I
can also see vsync is not enabled while I type at the terminal wrapped
by gnome-shell (visible tearing in the cursor block as I type).

I installed CCSM and verified that Sync to VBlank was already enabled.

Am I missing something, or is this a bug?

[Bug 973979] [NEW] gnome-shell incorrectly renders desktop viewport

2012-04-04 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu precise (development branch)
Release:12.04

--

Sometimes, gnome-shell incorrectly renders the desktop viewport. This
most recently happened when I moved a terminal window into a new
workspace using the CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+Down keyboard shortcut. (I do not
remember what may have triggered it the first time I encountered it, but
I do work with multiple workspaces frequently).

The first time it happened, the mouse was trapped into the secondary
viewport, so mousing up to 'Activities', the clock, the notification
area elements or the user menu was impossible. Reloading the shell
(pressing ALT+F2, typing 'r', then pressing Enter) did not clear it up.
To recover, I had to drop to a console (CTRL+ALT+F1), log in, and issue
'sudo reboot' (I'm sure there's a less drastic workaround, but really, I
shouldn't have to know what that is).

This reoccurred after a clean installation on the same machine. This
time, the mouse could roam freely between the viewports.

[Bug 964052] [NEW] mdadm: created as /dev/md0, becomes /dev/md127 after reboot.

2012-03-24 Thread Jason Wagner
Public bug reported:

-- lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu precise (development branch)
Release:12.04
--

-- apt-cache policy mdadm
mdadm:
  Installed: 3.2.3-2ubuntu1
  Candidate: 3.2.3-2ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 3.2.3-2ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
--

-- Environment
Ubuntu 12.04 Server Edition 64bit (installed from the 20120323 daily ISO)
Installed into a guest running on VirtualBox 4.1.10, hosted on Windows 7.
Disk configuration:
1 SATA controller
1 20GB HDD (used at / mount point)
5x 512MB HDD (used to simulate RAID5 array)
--

-- What action I took
On an untouched installation, I install mdadm, and attempt to create a RAID5
array with this command:

sudo mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=5 --raid-devices=5 /dev/sdb
/dev/sdc /dev/sdd /dev/sde /dev/sdf

After confirming that I wanted to create the array, mdadm reported success. I
initialized a file system on it, mounted it, and created a simple text file
containing 'Hello World' on it. Then, I reboot.
--

-- What I expected to happen
mdadm would reassemble the array at boot time as /dev/md0.
--

-- What happened instead
mdadm reassemled the array at boot time as /dev/md127.
--

It took a great deal if hunting around to discover that the array had
actually been assembled. I forget what command I issued that finally
tipped me off to the existence of the assembled array, but running 'sudo
mdadm --detail /dev/md127' confirmed that it was the array I had just
built. I mounted the array and viewed the contents of the text file to
confirm.

This did not occur when I built my array on my test and production
servers running Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64bit, so I am calling this new and
unexpected behavior, and filing it as a bug.

2012-03-24 Thread Jason Wagner
'mdadm.conf.txt' shows some manually made changes I was attempting to follow
after reading this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?s=b6e090eae70ded837a35d33a855bf21bp=11623570postcount=22

However, the alterations have no effect on the end result. mdadm still
reassembles the array as /dev/md127, which is undesirable.

[Bug 964052] Re: mdadm: created as /dev/md0, becomes /dev/md127 after reboot.

2012-03-24 Thread Jason Wagner
Reinstalling from the same ISO, I used guided partitioning to completely
wipe the root partition and reinstall the system. At the same time, I
also told it to mount the array.

After installation, my array is mounted and I see this in /etc/fstab:

# /media/raid was on /dev/md0 during installation
UUID=c3cc60a8-e441-4c68-a59d-ee6bacaf1e34 /media/raid ext4defaults
  0 2

Sure enough, the array is now assembled as /dev/md0. Of course, I
shouldn't have to do that when I told mdadm that I wanted the array to
be /dev/md0 in the first place.

2012-03-24 Thread Jason Wagner
I had a question in IRC (#ubuntu+1) about what the untouched mdadm.conf
looked like after building the array but before I altered it. To undo
the changes I made, simply remove the commented and uncommented DEVICE
lines.

Again, this change had no visible effect on how the array was
reassembled.

I need to be able to remotely connect to the server with Putty (my choice

Do I need to disable/configure a firewall? How would I do that?

You need to install the openssh-server package on the server. You can do
that during the install process by selecting SSH Server, or after the
install with:

sudo apt-get install openssh-server

 It's slightly different
to the PC platform in that the assumption, rightly or wrongly, is that
customers don't generally install custom operating systems on their phones
and tablets, and indeed I think there would be some reticence on behalf of
the phone companies to allow that from both support and system security
 perspectives ...

This is changing. Sony and HTC now have both committed to providing an easy
way to unlock their phone devices' boot loaders. The process involves
informing them of your IMEI, so you effectively sign away the warranty.

I think that's a fair compromise. I prefer to be covered in case of
hardware failure, which shouldn't be within the capability of software to
harm. However, that is no longer true. For instance, I can turn on my
phone's camera light with such intensity that it will - theoretically -
heat up and destroy the LED.

Of course, the hardware should have overrides preventing that.

Id like to hear opinions, experience and advice from those of you who have

I use BackupPC to backup everything. Just run SSHd or Samba on everything,
and configure it to back them up. I back up my Linux PCs from / down,
excepting a few directories that are dynamic or temporary or caches. I back
up my Android devices by installing QuickSSHd and backing up /data,
/sdcard, and /system.

Also when it comes to backing up, lets say you have a server that runs
weekly backups of devices on the network, how do you avoid it backing up
and overwriting a file if a user has infected some files on one of the
devices with malware? If you have incremental backups, how much more space
 will you need?

With BackupPC, which uses deduplication and compression, it keeps only the
changes. Other incrementals reference the last full. Even the fulls are
pooled so that space is saved. I have found the savings are about 10:1 over
raw copies of the data. For instance, from my home server:

Pool is 149.46GB comprising 1262847 files and 4369 directories (as of
2012-02-07 12:07).

There are 11 hosts that have been backed up, for a total of:

162 full backups of total size 1909.77GB (prior to pooling and compression)
114 incr backups of total size 42.40GB (prior to pooling and compression)

Can it present a public IP to my own router downstream of it, as my current

[Bug 913874] [NEW] live-config script is broken in ubuntu

2012-01-09 Thread Wagner Volanin
Public bug reported:

An image created with live-build uses the scripts provided by live-config to
configure the image during boot.
But the live-config main script (config.sh) is broken in ubuntu.

Ways to reproduce:
- Boot the newly build image with the noautologin or noxautologin kernel
parameters.

What should happen:
- The live-config main script (config.sh) should execute the configuration
scripts.

What happens:
- There is an error message about '???-sysvinit' not found and config.sh aborts.

Why it happens:
- The live config package in ubuntu removes the '007-gdm3' and '016-sysvinit'
files, necessary for config.sh to run.

Proposed solution:
- It's a small problem that lies in the config.sh script. The noautologin and
noxautologin options asks config.sh to NOT execute some scripts (007-gdm3 and
016-sysvinit in this case). But if these scripts are not available, config.sh
aborts.

The simple attached patch fixes this config.sh behaviour and makes its script
inclusion/exclusion routines much more robust. Please consider it for
inclusion. Thank you.

I find the microphone settings in Ubuntu are usually muted on a new

1. Click on the sound icon in the notification area
2. Select Sound Preferences
3. Input tab
4. Select each input in turn, and unmute input volume and raise to some

[Bug 659771] Re: find does not handle -size parameter 1 correctly

2011-11-22 Thread Stefan Wagner
I consider this a bug, too.

The reason to not threat it as a bug might be, that you don't want a
file to match -1M and +1M if it is exactly 1M, but how often do you have
a file of exactly 1M? If you did a dd-command with testdata, or a split
perhaps.

[Bug 667003] Re: Error when booting from the CDROM or flash memory

2011-11-15 Thread Albert Wagner
I have experienced the same error:

vesamenu.C32: not a COM32R image

I downloaded 64bit version of Lisa(Linuxmint12rc) from two separate
mirrors. I then used StartupDiskCreator to build the iso into a boot
USB. I did this exactly the way installed Linuxmint 11, and using that
installed Linuxmint 11. I was running on an HP g72 laptop.

When I search here at launchpad for COM32R , I am returned only one
bug report, the one I am replying to. What was incomplete with his
post? I understood it perfectly.

[Bug 508939] Re: Wrong colors when printing

2011-11-03 Thread cs wagner
I have verified by using multiple versions of Linux (Redhat, Ubuntu,
Debian, Fedora, Centos, etc...) and multiple printers (Dell, HP, Xerox,
etc...). Printing from acroread will produce the wrong colors. The
biggest issue is that blues come out purple. If you use any other PDF
reader (ie: okular), the colors are correct. I've tested multiple
versions of acroread up to version 9.4.2. Using the same version numbers
in Windows doesn't produce this problem. It is limited to the Linux
version of acroread.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Boot/Grub problem

2011-10-31 Thread Tyler J. Wagner
On 2011-10-31 20:04, Tony Pursell wrote:
I've got a problem with booting after I removed my old 1GB swap file and
created a new bigger swap file. The upshot of this seems to be that /boot
is now on /dev/sda6 instead of /dev/sda7. (That's because the old swap was
before it on the disk). What I get now is Error: unknown filesystem and
the Grub Rescue prompt. I can put in appropriate commands there, which
gives me the Grub menu and I can boot from there. I have run update-grub
and as far as I can see, grub.cfg now refers to /dev/sda6, but I am still
 getting the Grub error.

Do I have to run grub-install as well? If I do, what is install_device? I
don't want to make things worse by getting this wrong.

Yes, you do. Run:

grub-install /dev/sda

Tyler

apport information

** Attachment added: WifiSyslog.txt

** Description changed:

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 desktop version and I configure my network via
  interfaces file.

The problem is that whenever I use sudo service networking --full-restart
my GUI crashes.
I'm not sure if it crashes only the GUI though. The crash was confirmed on
fresh system
  install too.

  Thanks for your attention.

[Bug 876495] Re: bug on restarting networking service

2011-10-24 Thread Wagner Colato
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric running-unity

** Description changed:

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 desktop version and I configure my network via
  interfaces file.

The problem is that whenever I use sudo service networking --full-restart
my GUI crashes.
I'm not sure if it crashes only the GUI though. The crash was confirmed on
fresh system
  install too.

  Thanks for your attention.
