[Bug 963490] [NEW] Cannot reauthorise my Twitter account

2012-03-23 Thread Alex Cockell
Public bug reported:

Gwinbber wouldn't start - I had to remove pretty much everything from
CouchDB info, managed to get my Facebook account back.. but when I tried
reauthorising to Twitter - I got the following after entering my userid
and password.

Redirecting you back to the application. This may take a few moments.
If your browser doesn't redirect you please click here to continue
You can revoke access to any application at any time from the Applications tab
of your Settings page.
By authorizing an application you continue to operate under Twitter's Terms of
Service. In particular, some usage information will be shared back with
Twitter. For more, see our Privacy Policy.

Never went on from there. Got the following error.

2012-03-23 Thread Alex Cockell
I tried again - and it just showed a spinny when trying to authorise
Gwibber. I am now reduced to having to use Twiter's website. Please
fix.

Re: [Bug 875538] Re: [Firefox 3.6.23] Impossible to open firefox because firefox-bin process is still running

2011-11-27 Thread Alex Cockell
The problem you have is that a key bit of the Adobe spec... That of SWF
verification... Is NOT publicly specified. It's also used he/ily by the
BBC and Channel 4 in iPlayer and 4OD. Rather critical needs...

i'm on lucid as well. Was referring to Flash. flash 10.0.x ios too old for
most sites with video. Fallback from Flash 11 needs to be gtr than Flash 10.1
and it isn't.

May I suggest therefore that someone package up Flash 10.3 to give us
something to easily roll back to? needs pkg pbug is already filed.
means other stuff CAN be updated.

[Bug 886302] Re: [needs-packaging] - Adobe Flash 10.3.183.10 - as Flash 11 current breaks BBC iPlayer for NVIDIA ION-equipped netbooks

2011-11-08 Thread Alex Cockell
Oh the Beeb's front, they're investigating the issues - my case number
is BBC iPlayer - Case number CAS-1085162-WX025B

BBC's own FAQ page -
http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/announcements/flash_upgrade -
suggests it may be possible to drop down to a minimum version of 10.1...
as previously stated... it would behoove Ubuntu devs to get flashplugin-
installer to offer 10.2 and 10.3 asap.

[Bug 886302] Re: [needs-packaging] - Adobe Flash 10.3.183.10 - as Flash 11 current breaks BBC iPlayer for NVIDIA ION-equipped netbooks

2011-11-08 Thread Alex Cockell
Just found this Reddit thread -
http://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/lu5ke/adobe_flash_can_suck_my_balls/

Specifically this comment "So, not 11 then which had the most recent
and finally legitimately good updates to hardware acceleration and 64bit
support?

Huh? Not in Linux, according to a reply that I got from Adobe. Flashplayer 10.3
had VDPAU hardware-acceleration that worked with recent Nvidia chipsets
(enabled by creating the file /etc/adobe/mms.cfg containing
EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1) but that's been removed from Flashplayer 11 due to
"security problems".
"

Please could devs look at this package - at least then a usable and
easily accessible solution is there?

They ripped out the rendering but left the decoding logic (thank
goodness)

[Bug 886302] Re: [needs-packaging] - Adobe Flash 10.3.183.10 - as Flash 11 current breaks BBC iPlayer for NVIDIA ION-equipped netbooks

2011-11-08 Thread Alex Cockell
Thinking back to the experience on iPlayer when the change was made, the
situation was exacerbated by the Flash 10 package being updated to Flash
11 *in place*, as opposed to a new Flash 11 package being built and
adobe-flashplugin just repointed to it. Doing it this way rather than
Flash 11 named as Flash 10 in Software Centre etc - the contents changed
but the pkg remaining the same - would have meant it might have been
possible to force version within Synaptic - or offer the two versions of
Flash in Software Centre.

There is an active bug reported for Android on the iPlayer's help pages,
which recommend they back down to 10.3 - but 10.3 is available as an app
in the Android store. Win users have an installer to do the dirty work
- surely it would be best for Ubuntu to offer a backout package just
while Adobe get themselves organised...

There's also the issue of large deployments when a showstopping bug is
released within Flash...

2011-11-08 Thread Alex Cockell
Oh - also, the removal of Stage Video for NVIDIA was a deliberate decision by
Adobe - which was done between Beta and Gold release...
Not offering a backout without stepping into the murky world of tarballs and
monitoring for patches does seem a little remiss IMHO. And scary for less
technical users.

Re: [Bug 886302] Re: [needs-packaging] - Adobe Flash 10.3.183.10 - as Flash 11 current breaks BBC iPlayer for NVIDIA ION-equipped netbooks

2011-11-08 Thread Alex Cockell
Probably not, but while unsupported, an option to fix at Flash 10.2 or
10.3 until Adobe reintroduce Stage Video (whatever they call it) would
enable low power machines to actually *use* iPlayer, Youtube, Demand5,
4OD and other streaming video-on-Flash smoothly. this is the crux of
the issue. A stopgap... Yes... But a needed one. and much better a
package so nothing breaks when accepting the upgrade to 12.04.

either that or whitelist Totem-plugins for full H264 from the Beeb and
other broadcasters... So nvidia+atom users can actually USE their kit.

Not confident. And would prefer to rely on official packages -
especially when it came to eventually accepting 12.04.1 next year...

Also, am thinking of other users as well. And when or if Adobe manage
to get Stage Video/3D/whatever sorted - would prefer to just accept the
update through Update Manager...

But it means i have to buy a new computer to watch iplayer content.

Please could canonical and the bbc discuss.. This breaks an entire

This is not a wishlist item. the adobe flash 10 p,kg being updated to
v11 instead of a new pkg being rolled has meant thart due to the changes
in Flash, netbooks with N270 cpu and nvidia ion gpus cannot eun bbc
iplayer.

Please redefine as active bug. This has broken bbc iplayer

[Bug 886302] Re: [needs-packaging] - Adobe Flash 10.3.183.10 - as Flash 11 current breaks BBC iPlayer for NVIDIA ION-equipped netbooks

2011-11-04 Thread Alex Cockell
I have complained to the BBC, but as yet I have not received case
numbers from them; here are threads where this issue is discussed.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1659949&highlight=iplayer

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showpost.php?p=54112530&postcount=3

There are others. WOuld it also be possible for Canonical to approach
the BBC and liaise with them - as it appears that iPlayer is now
completely broken for Linux+Nvidia users.

2011-11-04 Thread Alex Cockell
The most recent older version (available under flashplugin-installer) is
10.0.42... too far out of date. 10.3 was released on 21st August 2011.

Please assist ASAP - I'm having to view iPlayer content on my R61 - but
would like the option on my netbook.

[Bug 886302] [NEW] [needs-packaging] - Adobe Flash 10.3.183.10 - as Flash 11 current breaks BBC iPlayer for NVIDIA ION-equipped netbooks

2011-11-04 Thread Alex Cockell
Public bug reported:

With Flash 11 current version and package, Adobe stripped out all the
experimental accelerated rendering support for NVIDIA ION and other NVIDIA
chipsets. While Youtube will happily roll back to software accel for NVIDIA
users, iPlayer won't. Results seen are
Video compressed, then tries to expand... then freezes completely, then iPlayer
will not play out video at all - but no issues with audio.

Effectively, iPlayer is completely unusable if on Intel Atom+NVIDIA
equipment running Ubuntu 10.04 and Flash 11. This is a massive
regression and dealbreaker for British Ubuntu users.

The BBC recently updated their playback client, relying on Stage 3D
logic to present the transport controls as an overlay - interacting with
issues in the Linux version of Flash 11; Windows and Mac have this
acceleration logic, according to their own release notes.

Intel chipsets (reliant on software) are perfectly OK.

Accelerated rendering WAS available in Flash 10.3 and the beta versions
of Flash 11.

The BBC also now stipulate that Flash 10.1 is the minimum version
required to play content on iPlayer - the only backout Force Install
option offered is Flash 10.0.42 or thereabouts.

Please could you arrange packaging of Adobe Flash 10.3 -
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/completion/?installer=Flash_Player_10_for_other_Linux_(.tar.gz)

.. so that a functional backward option is available?

This issue also may help with issues on 4OD as well.

Thanks

[Bug 875538] Re: [Firefox 3.6.23] Impossible to open firefox because firefox-bin process is still running

2011-10-31 Thread Alex Cockell
I was testing the changes made to BBC iPlayer today - they're making
more use of Stage Video stuff - which messes around with Flash and
NVIDIA... Adobe's code...

And lo and behold, I had to kill firefox-bin manually.

Looks like there is a lot of interaction with bugs in Flash...

[Bug 875538] Re: [Firefox 3.6.23] Impossible to open firefox because firefox-bin process is still running

2011-10-26 Thread Alex Cockell
I concur. What I would also expect to see is Firefox maxing out both
cores for approx 2-5 seconds as it unloads firefox-bin and plugin-
container - this CPU peak does NOT happen if the user has been viewing
Flash 11 content off Youtube... from their standard player. If I use
iPlayer or 4OD - it seems to close down cleanly. There are also other
times when the cleardown happens neatly.

It's made more complex in that Youtube seem to use a number of playout
clients.

Re the unload cycle - it's almost like the UI is the only thing that
unloads when the problem is experienced. You may have received the
issue earlier - IF the problem didn't stand in the way of ubuntu-bug
being able to submit the content. However, if Firefox cannot reopen and
open the new tab - that incident is never logged. To submit mine, I had
to kill Firefox-bin, then go and look at ubuntu-bug's doccos on how to
log the data to the local filesystem, then once back in Firefox, get it
to replay the incodent and push the data.

[Bug 846271] [NEW] Cannot reliably send to Twitter when only Twitter account enabled

2011-09-10 Thread Alex Cockell
Public bug reported:

I am trying to send to Twitter, when yesterday Gwibber suddenly broke.
Was suddenly unable to send to hashtags and @-accounts. I am also unable
to send to Twitter if ONLY Twitter is enabled, but only when I can send
to Facebook as well - obviously I don't want to clutter Facebook with
tweets a lot of the time.

I removed and readded the Gwibber system to my computer via Ubuntu
Software Centre, but this didn't resolve the issue.

Or not without sending several test messages and toggling Facebook
sending. Something is weird...

Please fix ASAP.

[Bug 811508] Re: Upon updating kernel, lost ethernet networking.

2011-07-17 Thread Alex Cockell
Also affects me - I am running a Lenovo Ideapad S12... appeared to hang
for a long time on the splashscreen after accepting updates. Rebooted
using Alt-SYSRQ-REISUB... tried again. No networking. Wouldn't even
scan.

Rebooted with 2.6.32.32 - came straight up.

I don't know how to list my wifi and Ethernet cards... all I know is
they come as standard on the Ideapad S12 as bought in 2010.

Please fix ASAP.

[Bug 806077] [NEW] When using 2 news servers, "N" key to read next article doesn't work

2011-07-05 Thread Alex Cockell
Public bug reported:

I am reading Usenet groups from my ISP (eclipse.co.uk) and Mozilla
groups from their own servers (news.mozilla.com). If I want to read
articles from one of the Eclipse-hosted groups, I have to doubleclick on
each one, rather than being able to just follow threads using "n" key.

RUnning Pan 0.133 on Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS.

Usability issue - and no docs to speak of.

Is it safe to remove gnome-dbg? As that one was marked as one that
would be deleted...

2011-01-28 Thread Alex Cockell
I tried again today - clicked on the link
https://launchpad.net/bugs/699885 in Update Manager when looking at
linux-headers-2-6-28-32 changes... GNOME Web Browser opened up rather
than Firefox - when I have Firefox set as my Preferred Browser.

Surely Update Manager should look at my preferences.

Please resolve.

[Bug 695644] [NEW] Unable to watch SeeSaw.com content full-screen

2010-12-30 Thread Alex Cockell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

I attempted to watch a Dr Who episode on SeeSaw.com - display was
screwed up when I selected full screen, to the extent that the "Press
Esc to exit full-screen" message scrolled left to right on a black
screen; I was able to hear sound though. I was then unable to back out
by hitting Escape (normal return-to-windowed-display keypress).

Seesaw's own help describes this as a known issue; it recommends
disabling hardware acceleration by right-clicking on the player,
selecting "Settings" then deselcting "use hardware acceleration". This
is greyed out on 10.04.1 running on an R61i (my display controller is, I
believe, an Intel X3100). Consequently, this course of action is not
available to me, and I am restricted to watching within a window.

In order to recover, I had to hit CTRL-ALT-F1, switch to a text console,
log in and reboot (sudo shutdown-r now)... then watch the content in a
window.

I have not tested with iPlayer - but this could also have an impact.

Please liaise with Adobe and fix.

[Bug 693131] [NEW] Launchpad links in the bug-fix description field don't lauch Firefox when set as default

2010-12-21 Thread Alex Cockell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I fired up Update Manager to check what fixes were waiting - decided to
have a look at the related Launchpad report against one of the kernel
updates... instead of opening up a tab in Firefox as I expected, it
started another program called the "Gnome Web Browser". In turn, this
messed up my audio playback - I had to reboot to get my audio back.
This affected ALL audio playback whether from my browser or from other
audio apps (Totem, Rhythmbox etc).

I tested with iPlayer - and while I could watch images, there was no
audio at all until I rebooted.

I have Firefox set as my default browser in System Preferences - surely
this option should be used by all apps requesting web-page output?

What was concerning was - I had Firefox open at the time -

Expected behaviour... that the Launchpad page would open up in a new tab
within Firefox.

Please fix.

[Bug 688900] [NEW] Cannot apply bug updates - one package non-existent

2010-12-11 Thread Alex Cockell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I am using a preinstalled Thinkpad R61i, running Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS. I
tried accepting systems updates today, when the following happened.

I clicked on Check - only on the 3rd attempt did it manage to pull all
48 lookup files down.

I clicked on Install - only 35 of the 36 available updates downloaded...
I aborted and stopped the update process there.. in case anything was
broken by a partial update.

Here are the errors...

Looks like it's just made Debian Testing.

Any chance it could be evaluated for SRU into Lucid? Maybe along with

So we end-users have a one-step action?

Re: [Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion

2010-08-05 Thread Alex Cockell
It sounds like my best option is to wait until after the new 10.04.1 CDs
and USB keys are available, then buy them from said vendor; do my
upgrades from supplied media...

What advice is usually given to non-technical users when it comes to
major updates like this? Or should I do something like - buy the OS
upgrades then take my kit to my local LUG and let them do it?

Or should I just write off my Thinkpad next year and buy a new computer?

[Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion

2010-08-04 Thread Alex Cockell
@Erick,

As yet, I don't know. I Am currently using a Thinkpad R61i as supplied
by Linux Emporium with 8.04, and an Ideapad S12 - as supplied with 9.10
and 10.04dev (10.04dev on a separate partition, which I accepted updates
to - although I am generally using the 9.10 instance). All I've done so
far is simply accept updates via Update Manager. Any software I've
added - was simply by firing up Synaptic or Software Centre and clicking
on the relevant buttons to request it.

I am worried that selecting the wrong option - especially on my netbook
- will leave me with an unbootable machine - the only option being to

[Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion

2010-08-03 Thread Alex Cockell
I have to ask - what about people who bought their computer preinstalled
with Ubuntu? Like me, for instance?

How on earth am I supposed to know what options to accept?

Public bug reported:

I am attempting to find a channel to do with Glastonbury, I select
Network/Channels, the client displays a massive list.. then freezes, and
the app greys out.

I am unable therefore to search for and join the channel.

i am attempting this on the Freenode network.

Please fix.

Hello

i do not know what a "backtrace" is, and do not want to risk breaking my
computer, as fixing it would entail sending it back to the vendor.

I bought my computer preinstalled.

[Bug 584365] [NEW] [needs-packaging] EBU Octoshape

2010-05-22 Thread Alex Cockell
Public bug reported:

Octoshape is a media playback plug-in used by the European Broadcasting
Union (EBU) for some of their shows fed around the Eurovisioon network.
One such show is the Eurovision Song COntest. Adding this plugin will
enable playout of their streams.

I believe it is possible that is it proprietary - if so, please could Canonical
discuss with them the possibility of getting it into the Partner repository,.
COuld they also consider rolling it out to Hardy, Karmic as well as Lucid.

URL : http://www.octoshape.com/?page=get_octo/get_octo
Select Linux version - released as a .bin, dependencies are on the site.

Licence : Unsure.Looks commercial. Also peer-to-peer.

(Granted - I'll be using live broadcast via the Beeb...)

2010-05-19 Thread Alex Cockell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

I am running a preinstalled instance of Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 on a
Lenovo Ideapad S10 purchased from Linux Emporium.

Situation - I leave the computer alone to do something else - Firefox is
running.
I come back, wake the computer from sleep by waggling the mouse or hitting a
shift key...
I attempt to open the address bar dropdown list./menu/whatever - expecting to
see the populated list of frequently-accessed sites... this doesn't happen.
Instead, the keyboard focus is locked ont he address bar.. even to the extent
that autocomplete doesn't happen.

What SHOULD happen is that the drop down should work.

Firefox version is 3.5.9 - as supplied as standard with Ubuntu.
Ubuntu version - UNR 9.10 with all updates prior to 17 May 2010 (I prefer to
wait a week after packages arrive in Update Manager before acceptance.. just in
case any of them break my computer).

Please fix asap.

[Bug 524851] Re: [needs-packaging] Enhancement Request - Citrix Receiver as Ubuntu Partner package

2010-05-14 Thread Alex Cockell
I noticed a development on the Citrix website...

It appears that Citrix clients are now available as a .deb off their website...
http://www.citrix.com/English/ss/downloads/details.asp?downloadId=3323&productId=186&c1=sot2755&c2=ost1349860

Documentation is available here...
http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/index.jsp?topic=/receiver-linux-blackfoot/linux-readme-11-100.html

Would it be possible for this bug to be escalated with Canonical, and
they get around a table with Citrix - get it into the Partner repo.. in
time for 10.04.1 respin and also backport for Karmic and Hardy?
Obviously check dependencies...

[Bug 524851] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Enhancement Request - Citrix Receiver as Ubuntu Partner package

2010-02-20 Thread Alex Cockell
Public bug reported:

I think this has been raised before, both in Brainstorm and on the back
of old bugs... and as community documentation. However, it has also
been raised in Citrix's own discussion areas...

Namely, getting Citrix Receiver available for Ubuntu from the
repositories.

Would it be possible for more experienced personnel to look into the
possibility of Canonical liaising with Citrix so that the Receiver
client could be made available as a fully-supported app in the Partner
repository? That way, bugfixes could be easily and quickly supplied in
the future... and all the dependencies can be handled quickly and
easily? And most of all - safely?

IT would help with possible business deployments of Ubuntu. But more
prosaically - apparently Citrix have been having issues with building
Debian packages - but they supply tarballs and RPMs. Maybe Canonical
can help them in this regard?

Speaking from a personal front, I use Citrix Receiver when I work from
home - and keeping up to date with bugfixes would be a lot easier if I
could just let Update Manager handle that for me.

Current Citrix install process -
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CitrixICAClientHowTo
Ubuntuforums thread (I do not have access from work)

Current bug - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/295083
This was declined for Jaunty - could we get it in for Lucid? Would help with
business adoption...

[Bug 515678] Re: [needs-packaging] sun-java6 for lucid

2010-02-17 Thread Alex Cockell
PLEASE could the Release Management team ensure this goes in before
Lucid goes to Gold release? I use my machine to remotely connect to
work (Citrix/VPN) as well as other Sun Java apps out there...

Currently on Hardy - but I plan to buy a new netbook with Lucid preinstalled...
then upgrade this R61i from the preinstall it currently has (I buy from Linux
Emporium). And I'd be scared of breaking the machine - far less risk if it's
in the repos..
(also better for downstream people - like Dell and Mint).

Might it be an idea to enter into discussions with Oracle to get full
Sun Java into the Partner repos going forward? You know - like we do
with Adobe? Just an idea from an end-user...

>From what I gather, Adobe have their own installer around this one -

IMHO a bit cackhanded. Would it be possible for the Partner repo team to
negotiate with Adobe for a plain .deb? That way, it could be released through
the Partner repos just like Flash is now.

Thoughts?

[Bug 389322] Re: Yahoo server authentication changed: Pidgin =<2.5.6 will not connect to Yahoo! servers.

2009-10-14 Thread Alex Cockell
@Release Management - if Pidgin is working OK in Karmic (2.6.2 supported
against Yahoo), please could you consider not causing us basic users to
have the choice between not using Yahoo or breaking our machines y
stepping outside the official Canonical repos?

In short, please could you consider SRUing 2.6.2 back to Hardy?

Thanks,

[Bug 389322] Re: Yahoo server authentication changed: Pidgin =<2.5.6 will not connect to Yahoo! servers.

2009-10-09 Thread Alex Cockell
I had a look on Yahoo's blogs - and found this article -
http://www.ymessengerblog.com/blog/2009/09/18/versions-6-7-5-will-end-
on-september-30/

It looks as though Pidgin has to emulate Yahoo 9 or later in order to be
let in.

Any idea when this fix is going to reach us basic LTS users?

[Bug 447449] [NEW] I cannot connect to Yahoo Chat - my userid there is alcockell

I expected to log into Yahoo Messenger services cleanly - it worked yesterday.
All my IRC connections have established on Pidgin launch, but Yahoo won't log

[Bug 343026] Re: Wifi driver will fail to load if regulatory domain set in module options

2009-07-25 Thread Alex Cockell
Umm- what about us preinstall users?

I bought my Thinkpad R61i preinstalled from Linux Emporium - and would
not feel comfortable if on a critical update, it broke.

Which is what an end-user like me will think.

PLEASE don't cause someone like me to have to send my primary machine
across the country to my vendor to be fixed if you suddenly kill
networking from under me...

Or - at least present a menu or something on setup...

[Bug 370173] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 laptop overheat and shutdown

2009-06-15 Thread Alex Cockell
For the record, with the cooler running, my temps are down at
a...@ubuntu:~$ acpi -t
 Thermal 1: ok, 42.0 degrees C
 Thermal 2: ok, 40.0 degrees C

whereas I recall them being at the 52 deg C point... and the GPU running
very hard.

On mains, the BIOS is set to run at Performance level, GNOME has
Ondemand/ondemand.

Just that I'm worried that eventually when I accept an upgrade to the
next LTS, it would cook my machine.

And this is 650 quid of laptop...

uname is Linux ubuntu 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Wed Apr 1 21:47:28 UTC
2009 i686 GNU/Linux. Last kernel accepted via Update Manager was -24.53
which had the issue.

[Bug 370173] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 laptop overheat and shutdown

2009-06-15 Thread Alex Cockell
All I know is that back last week, my machine was desperately hot to the
touch, and froze up. I hard-powered off, called my vendor, left it most
of a day to cool down... but am now running it on top of a cooler.

SOMETHING happened after system updates (accepting 2.6.24-24.53 onto my
machine) that I took on about two weeks back, which caused the laptop to
be extremely hot to the touch, whacked the thermal warnings into my
logs, AND DID NOT SHUT DOWN. In order to run my machine, I HAVE to run
it on the cooler, and the fan does not go about about 3100rpm.

It was unbearably hot, and it is only with the cooler running, blowing
cold air at the base on the unit, that the CPU stays within functional
temps.

Since then - I run it on top of the cooler.. but if I ever did boot into
-24.53 again, it would probably overheat.

As stuff is often rolled in.. PLEASE JUST FIX IT.

I am *not* a developer.

Nor do I want to see my laptop break if I had to run it away from the
cooler.

[Bug 370173] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 laptop overheat and shutdown

2009-06-15 Thread Alex Cockell
For the record, I am your putative Regular User who bought his laptop
preinstalled with Ubuntu 8.04. I have no other OS, and this is my
primary machine (Thinkpad R61i, 7650-series model).

All I know is that my machine overheated when running 2.6.24-24.53, and
my vendor told me to go back to booting -23. And in order to keep the
CPU temps around the mid-40s (which I believe is OK for Core 2 Duo
THinkpads according to these long threads), I have to run it on a
cooler.

I gave it a blast with compressed air - but anything else would mean me
taking the laptop to an IBM Service Centre.

Currently, it's running OK atop the cooler- but I am sure it's the
cooler keeping the temperature down.

Something happened with the system updates around my first post on this
incident report.

Please, could Canonical fix the issue, and get a fix into my Update
Manager once it's fully tested.

Lenovo Thinkpad R61i - I was running 2.6.24-24.53 when suffering thermal

Intel X3100 embedded graphics
Intel 3945ABG wireless, Broadcom ethernet controller
Core 2 Duo, 2x 1.8GHz.

I daren't run this not on the Axasa laptop cooler.

RUnning 8.04.2 (or most of it), but running 2.6.24-23generic..

Canonical - you have a Severity 2 incident here - just fix it already!

[Bug 370173] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 laptop overheat and shutdown

2009-06-10 Thread Alex Cockell
Could this be a lead?
http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=R_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=3409
Possible heat issue with the graphics processor even with Vista...

I found the above on the Lenovo forums yesterday; maybe it's the GPU
that's heating stuff up.. but the main thermal sensors listened to are
on the CPUs? Is the GPU kinda central on the motherboard? Just that I
do remember my laptop's underside getting warm especially when running
on mains with the battery out ever since I bought the laptop (I used to
cook batteries in an old Toshiba - so I often do that if I'm running
mostly on mains at home).

Laptop fan kicks up to around 3000 periodically - but mostly being
handled by the cooler at the mo.

Could it be that the GPU needs the fan to run longer and faster to cool
it down?

Just that I did notice once when it WAS hot that the mouse would respond
to movement but not to clicks. Could the GPU be thrashing? There were
also these lines from /var/log/messages...

May 30 23:10:05 ubuntu kernel: [531782.411921] thinkpad_acpi: unhandled
HKEY event 0x6022

But with no shutdown action as these events weren't being handed off in
Hardy...

But - since I bought the cooler - no heat issues at all. However, I DID
notice CPU0 go to 100% when the GPU wakes up (I hit shift to wake the
display up after leaving the machine for a bit)... in 2.6.24-24 (kernel
that gave me grief), I did also notice a bit of a memory leak.

In -23 (my uname - Linux ubuntu 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Wed Apr 1
21:47:28 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux), it isn't immediately hitting swap,
and running at about 100Mb less memory used with Evolution, Firefox (6
tabs), Sysmon, gedit. Unlike under -24, where there was a definitely
memory leak (committed memory climbing towards 50% rather than 30 - I
run 2Gb onboard).

Could the bugs be in -24-restricted?
