[Bug 1954970] Re: remmina "Cannot connect to the RDP server ... via TLS. Check that the client and server support a common TLS version"

2022-05-18 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
The 2.6.1+dfsg1-3ubuntu2 libfreerdp2-2 found on jammy-updates fixes the RD
gateway access issue for me too. Thanks, I can use Remmina again. A bit
disconcerting that Remmina seems to be the only GUI option for this task. Much
depends on it working. Shocking that the bug made it all the way to 22.04 LTS
release. Happy for the fix!

[Bug 1875774] Re: lxqt-policykit crashes with general protection fault in libgobject-2.0

2021-07-16 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
According to upstream this bug is fixed in lxqt-policykit 0.17.0. However,
there are no Debian or Ubuntu packages to test above 0.16.0.

[Bug 1002978] Re: [meta-bug] Inverted Internal microphone (phase inversion)

2019-11-30 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
On an Acer Aspire 5810TG running Ubuntu 18.04 with latest 5.3 kernel.
HDA Intel. ALC269 Analog. Pulseaudio was monitoring minimal sound from
internal mic with both channels on, but ok with either left or right
off. Audacity and Gnome Sound Recorder had no issues. Audacity showed
two phase inverted channels. Same issues as above re Skype and
Hangouts and same workarounds worked. External mono plug in mic - no
problem.

Same problem on same machine with Debian 10 Buster.

Tried remapping the Pulseaudio stereo channels to mono which allowed
even output through both speakers. For instructions see:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio/Troubleshooting
#No_microphone_on_Steam_or_Skype_with_enable-remixing_=_no

After this, Pulseaudio still has to have one internal mic channel off
to function. However output is now through both speakers instead of
one.

In Ubuntu, Audacity shows two channels with same phase. In Debian,
Audacity shows one mono channel. Same difference through the speakers.

I believe this is still a bug as Pulseaudio cannot produce output
from with a phase inverted stereo internal mic as Audacity and Sound
recorder can.

Best regards,
Your bleeding user

[Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2016-02-11 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
There is no change in this defective behaviour with the most recent
updates today. I suppose anyone affected is using the
workarounds. No one has offered to do kernel bisects. My main
work around is Debian Sid.

Re: [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-10-30 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
Nope. Same graphics problem exists for me with 4.2.5-wily kernel
[sans xorg.conf]. Any good kernel is likely to be an earlier one,
not a later one, as the regression is yet unidentified.

Lacking resources to do full kernel commit bisect, I found "adjacent"
kernels
in the order of http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D

we have last good kernel
v3.19.8-ckt9-vivid/

first bad kernel:
v4.0-rc1-vivid/

kernels tested:
Good:
3.19.8ckt4
3.19.8ckt7
3.19.8ckt9

Bad:
4.0.5
4.0rc1
4.1.2
4.2.1
4.2.5
4.3rc7

Re: [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-10-30 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
Lacking resources to do full kernel commit bisect, "adjacent" kernels
in the order of http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D

we have last good kernel
v3.19.8-ckt9-vivid/

first bad kernel:
v4.0-rc1-vivid/

kernels tested:
3.19.8ckt4
3.19.8ckt7
3.19.8ckt9
4.0.5
4.0rc1
4.1.2
4.2.1
4.2.5
4.3rc7
I take it all back... As I was working on my WebGL code just now it
crashed again. I've attached my Xorg.2.log which clearly shows a
problem:

[ 1329.968] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa
[ 1332.117] (EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version:
Permission denied [13].

[ 1332.117] (II) UnloadModule: "intel"
[ 1332.117] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
[ 1332.117] (EE)
Fatal server error:
[ 1332.117] (EE) no screens found(EE)
[ 1332.117] (EE)
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
 at http://wiki.x.org
 for help.
[ 1332.117] (EE) Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.2.log"
for additional information.
[ 1332.117] (EE)
[ 1332.142] (EE) Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.

What's up with that permissions error? Also, why is it even getting
such an error so late after running just fine for hours?

dmidecode -s bios-version &&  dmidecode -s bios-release-date && dmidecode
-s bios-vendor
A08
03/03/2006
Dell Inc.

Sorry, Christopher, the BIOSupdate made no difference. After
a few seconds to a minute or two the graphics are covered
with horizontal lines obscuring the screen same as the other
bloke's screen shot. I think navigating the LXDE menu seems
to trigger the behaviour, or not. The GUI eventually may
crash to a black screen. Only resortis to ctrl-alt-F[x]
switch to a command line interface terminal.

Something weird about the new Ubuntu kernels which is not in
the new Debian Sid4.2 or the previous 3.19 Ubuntu kernel..

[Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-10-25 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
No sorrybisections are not appropriate yet. As the latest
mainline after all still has the bug I am trying this work
around as per Phil Hopkins:

Older Intel graphics adapters may need UXA acceleration instead of the
default. The work-around is to change the Xorg acceleration method to
UXA.

Edit (or create) as root or sudo a file named /etc/X11/xorg.conf as
follows (there should be a tab before each line except the first and the
last):

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

So far on the stock 15.10 4.2 kernel no problems. Will give it
a few more minutes.

[Bug 1509556] [NEW] Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-10-23 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
Public bug reported:

On recent update from 15.04 to 15.10, the new 4.2 kernel is
associated withgraphics instability after a few seconds of GUI use
with mouse and keyboard making the GUI unusable. See another
person's same experience with intel graphics here:
askubuntu.com/questions/688649/kubuntu-wily-upgrade-screen-glitch

Downgrading to the last 15.04kernel solves my issue.

See result of ubuntu-bug linux from the terminal attached.

Re: [Bug 1509556] [NEW] Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-10-23 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
Note there is no such issue onthe same system's Debian
 partition using Debian's 4.2 kernel.

Today I installed the latest mainline 4.3 ubuntu kernel and the
 issue remains.

Re: [Bug 1460365] Re: 3.19 kernels in 15.04 do not work on my 32bit system

2015-06-01 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
Thank you, Christopher Penalver, for your prompt response. I updated the
BIOS from 5.16 to 5.22 as you directed via the Windows Vista partition.
All aforementioned Ubuntu Linux kernels, old, new official 15.04 and
upstream now boot properly on the machine [and even the Debian partition
kernels] :) The BIOS update successfully worked around the kernel bug.

Bryan Cebuliak, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
 better. As per http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-
 Pavilion-a6700-Desktop-PC-series/3823602/model/3830446 an update to your
computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (5.22). If you update to
 this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it
 change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide
the output of the following terminal command:
 sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
 .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then
please mark this report Status Confirmed.

 Thank you for your understanding.

Relativism depends on one's point of view.

christopher.m.penal...@gmail.com wrote:

Bryan Cebuliak, just to clarify, if you updated your BIOS and a problem
went away, then the bug was in the BIOS, not the kernel. Despite this,
this bug report is being closed due to your last comment
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1460365/comments/35
regarding this being fixed with a BIOS update. For future reference you
can manage the status of your own bugs by clicking on the current status

to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please submit any
 future bugs you may find.

** Description changed:

Since upgrading from 14.10 [3.16 kernel] to 15.04 the 3.19 kernels
including 3.19.0-20 will either stall on bootor leave me
without proper graphics or nil keyboard and mouse even on recovery boot
. The next functioning mainline kernel is v4.0-rc1-vivid. No problem there.
I suggest you abandon completely this very problematic end of life

** Description changed:

- Since upgrading from 14.10 [3.16 kernel] to 15.04 the 3.19 kernels
- including 3.19.0-20 will either stall on bootor leave me
- without proper graphics or nil keyboard and mouse even on
- recovery boot . The next functioning mainline kernel is
- v4.0-rc1-vivid. No problem there. I suggest you abandon completely
- this very problematic end of life kernel and quickly test and
- backport a newer series. 3.19 up to 3.19.7 has also given me similar
- grief on my old Macbook 2,1 64bit.

[Bug 1460365] [NEW] 3.19 kernels in 15.04 do not work on my 32bit system

2015-05-30 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading from 14.10 [3.16 kernel] to 15.04 the 3.19 kernels
including 3.19.0-20 will either stall on bootor leave me
without proper graphics or nil keyboard and mouse even on
recovery boot . The next functioning mainline kernel is
v4.0-rc1-vivid. No problem there. I suggest you abandon completely
this very problematic end of life kernel and quickly test and
backport a newer series. 3.19 up to 3.19.7 has also given me similar
grief on my old Macbook 2,1 64bit.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Incomplete

3.19 kernels are nowhere to be found in Debian stable, testing or unstable.
So, why not and why are they in Ubuntu?

Based on reading the changelog and searching for i915 there could be a
couple of others to cherry pick. Reverse bisecting may get quicker

Re: [Bug 1455852] Re: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2,1

2015-05-20 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
another possible candidate re boot hang:

commit 0e126cfab3928e8b01e17e1e707eec2bfdb4f1c2
Author: Len Brown len.br...@intel.com
Date: Wed Jan 15 00:37:34 2014 -0500

sched/idle/x86: Restore mwait_idle() to fix boot hangs, to improve
power savings and to improve performance

commit b253149b843f89cd300cbdbea27ce1f847506f99 upstream.

In Linux-3.9 we removed the mwait_idle() loop:

  69fb3676df33 (x86 idle: remove mwait_idle() and idle=mwait
cmdline param)

The reasoning was that modern machines should be sufficiently
happy during the boot process using the default_idle() HALT
loop, until cpuidle loads and either acpi_idle or intel_idle
invoke the newer MWAIT-with-hints idle loop.

But two machines reported problems:

 1. Certain Core2-era machines support MWAIT-C1 and HALT only.
MWAIT-C1 is preferred for optimal power and performance.
But if they support just C1, cpuidle never loads and
so they use the boot-time default idle loop forever.

 2. Some laptops will boot-hang if HALT is used,
but will boot successfully if MWAIT is used.
This appears to be a hidden assumption in BIOS SMI,
that is presumably valid on the proprietary OS
where the BIOS was validated.

   https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60770

So here we effectively revert the patch above, restoring
the mwait_idle() loop. However, we don't bother restoring
the idle=mwait cmdline parameter, since it appears to add
no value.

Maintainer notes:

  For 3.9, simply revert 69fb3676df
for 3.10, patch -F3 applies, fuzz needed due to __cpuinit use in
context For 3.11, 3.12, 3.13, this patch applies cleanly

Wrong guess re 37ef01ab... , but there is a difference. After reaching the
usual ..Created slice... message, instead of stalling on the message ,
the screen goes black then stalls. Still boots on recovery mode only. Must
be another or combination of commits. There are 4 or 5 i915 related ones

Re: [Bug 1455852] Re: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2,1

2015-05-19 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
Remember similar stalling while booting in MacBook 2,1 issues predate the
ubuntu 3.19 kernel. They are in 3.16 and previous I think also, just not as
consistently or persistently as the in the 3.19. Would be nice for Ubuntu
to figure this out and backport all supported kernels.

Wrong guess re 37ef01ab... , but there is a difference. After reaching the
usual ..Created slice... message, instead of stalling on the message ,
the screen goes black then stalls. Still boots on recovery mode only. Must
be another or combination of commits. There are 4 or 5 i915 related ones
possibly relevant. Hoping the relevant commit is in the updated Ubuntu
kernel. It is certainly in the mainline which works here without issue.

I built a Vivid test kernel with a cherry pick of 37ef01ab.

The test kernel can be downloaded from:

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?

Note, you will have to install both the linux-image and linux-image-
 extra .deb packages.

I installed the packages as you directed, Joseph Salisbury. The grub entry
was 3.19.0-17-generic. The boot stalled at the usual place. Something about
islice, as reported elsewhere in the ubuntu forum. My bug was not resolved
by this action. It was fixed by actions mentioned earlier in this thread.

[Bug 1455852] Re: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2,1

2015-05-18 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
Having a look at this changelog:
https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.x/ChangeLog-3.19.7

Sounds a bit like the GPU hang and parser error in the
 kern.log snippet I posted originally.

...

commit bb55569e6e1314a2df0108374c0f3c454b8f91af

drm/i915: Dont enable CS_PARSER_ERROR interrupts at all

commit 37ef01ab5d24d1d520dc79f6a98099d451c2a901 upstream.

We stopped handling them in

commit aaecdf611a05cac26a94713bad25297e60225c29
Author: Daniel Vetter daniel.vet...@ffwll.ch
Date: Tue Nov 4 15:52:22 2014 +0100

drm/i915: Stop gathering error states for CS error interrupts

but just clearing is apparently not enough: A sufficiently dead gpu
left behind by firmware (*cough* coreboot *cough*) can keep the gpu in
an endless loop of such interrupts, eventually leading to the nmi
firing. And definitely to what looks like a machine hang.

Since we don't even enable these interrupts on gen5+ let's do the same
on earlier platforms.

v3.19.6-vivid stalls in the boot process and will not boot. The next one,
v3.19.7-vivid, boots.

Hope that helps. I am a bit time poor for full bisection for now.

Re: [Bug 1455852] Re: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2,1

2015-05-17 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
No. 3.19.0-16-generic will not boot normally. In recovery mode it boots but
with no mouse or keyboard function. My experience with recent kernels is
the same as Nils'. The 3.16 kernels may take a few stalled boots hardware
power key shutdowns and reboots to work. I think the 14.04 LTS kernels were
ok and the original quetzal 12.10 ones were ok.
