[Bug 1885530] Re: password doesn't leave dots on being entered

2021-11-05 Thread JT Moree
I am not able to see the password dots unless i highlight the text in
the text box. Also when the screen goes 'gray?' the dots show up. This
happens after clicking the login button or hitting enter.

My hardware is : Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Picasso (rev
c4).

It seems like the bug comments are suggesting that the problems are
related to fancy hardware features. If so, can I set the login screen to
turn off hardware acceleration?

Re: [Bug 1931044] Re: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad choppy movement after suspend

2021-07-19 Thread jt
Hi,

it doesn't seem to help:
I had an incident, where the choppyness didn't go away even after restart,
and also not after adding said option.
It improved after suspending the laptop and waking it up again.

(my grub config is enclosed in the screenshot, I did update-grub and
udpated-grub2)

[Bug 1931146] Re: installer crash on manual partitioning when using encryption

2021-07-07 Thread JT Moree
This may be a duplicate of an eight year old bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1510731. The
workaround is to use the gtk_ui

1. Install ubiquity-frontend-gtk;
2. run "ubiquity gtk_ui"

options are not exactly the same but close enough to get install with
LUKS root.

Be aware that another bug causes the installer to RECREATE existing
LUKS partitions even if you CANCEL the install. DO NOT use ubiquity to
manage crypto partitions for an install of Kubuntu/Ubuntu on existing
LUKS partitions. Instead, use luksOpen yourself before running
ubiquity.

[Bug 1931146] Re: installer crash on manual partitioning when using encryption

2021-06-16 Thread JT Moree
FYI. I can install if I create LVM volumes on top of the crypto part
but bootup with LVM and LUKS is complex so it fails. This is probably
not the fault of the installer but I'm still working on that approach as
a workaround to not having direct access to the crypto part in the
installer.

Another approach might be to manually mount /target on the crypto parts
before install. Can we tell ubiquity to skip partitioning and just
install to a mount point?

[Bug 1931146] Re: installer crash on manual partitioning when using encryption

2021-06-09 Thread JT Moree
When I manually create the luks partition and label it as such ubiquity
crashes when I then try to setup /boot. If I setup /boot first it does
not crash and I can then assign a crypto partition. But that's it. The
installer will not let me do anything else with a crypo partition. If I
cannot choose it as / then I can't install to it.

I tried clicking install now after assigning /boot and crypto but
nothing happens.

Also, after doing the above steps if I click Back the installer crashes
with 'An error occurred while creating the keyfile.'

[Bug 1931146] Re: installer crash on manual partitioning when using encryption

2021-06-07 Thread JT Moree
I just ran an install where I don't use LUKs and it works. seems that in
addition to the installer not allowing me to fully configure encrypted
partitions it also crashes configuring other partitions when one of them is set
to use encryption.
to reproduce
* create partitions before install
* start install
* move through setup to partitioning. choose manual
* choose one of the partitions and change it to use encryption
* choose another partition and click Edit. Choose to format and assign it as
/boot'
* click OK and crash

** Summary changed:

- installer crash on manual partitioning

[Bug 1931146] [NEW] installer crash on manual partitioning

2021-06-07 Thread JT Moree
Public bug reported:

I am attempting a fresh install on a dual boot setup. currently using
windows 10 and Kubuntu 20.04. I am also using LUKS but the installer
doesn't really seem to support it--even the old manual setup-- so I
might have to downgrade to 20.10.

I have existing partitions so I choose manual but when I attempt to
assign partitions and tell the system to format it crashes. In this
case I was assigning /boot as a plain partition with nothing special
and when clicking OK it crashes. I don't even get to the Install Now
button. it crashes editing the /boot partition.

[Bug 1931044] [NEW] SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad choppy movement after suspend

2021-06-07 Thread jt
Public bug reported:

Sometimes touchpad input becomes very laggy.

It seems to be related to suspending the laptop. I think it also has to
do with other mice being plugged in/out.

Often, suspending and waking up immediately afterwards makes the pointer
fluent again.

This is not the only problem I see with this touchpad/driver:
Sometimes the pointer stops moving horizontally as if it got stuck in a
scrolling gesture.
Sometimes the pointer (almost) stops moving completely. Suspending often but
not always helps.
I am not sure whether these problems are related.

I am happy to debug the problem, but I don't know where to start.

[Bug 1872001] Re: 5.3.0-46-generic - i915 - frequent GPU hangs / resets rcs0

2020-06-01 Thread jt
I looked at this again. The GPU does scale down sometimes. But still the
power consumption has without any doubt degraded a lot between 51 and 53
minor versions. The difference is immediately seen by either by looking
at powertop or the power consumption or expected battery time in freshly
booted kernels respectively. 53 only last 2/3 of the time that 51 lasts.

Since Linux X 5.3.0-53-generic it seems that I don't experience the hangs any
more, but idle power consumption severely degraded: 5.3.0-51 uses 2/3 of the
power that ..-53 uses. It's also worse than on 4.15.

[Bug 1861395] Re: system hang: i915 Resetting rcs0 for hang on rcs0

2020-05-17 Thread jt
I also have this problem on

Linux X 5.3.0-51-generic #44~18.04.2-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 23 14:27:18 UTC
2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

In this kernel it happens very frequently for me; it's in every 5.3
kernel I tried - more or less frequent.

It's not in 4.x. (which is marked by ubuntu for removal).

I don't want to sound rude, I just need to know: Is there something on
the horizon to fix this problem in ubuntu 18? (I can't upgrade to 20 for
reasons. I would try to permanently downgrade my kernel)

It might not be clear, but that's a 55" monitor by the way. The font is way
too big in the places that you might think it's normal sized.

Re: [Bug 1774749] Re: scaling is off

2018-07-22 Thread JT
I've switched to KDE for my desktop, and now it's just not working at all.
I'm attaching a screenshot of what is going on. Some UI elements are HUGE,
and some are too small.

I've fiddled with different versions of Freeplane, different versions of
Java, different KDE settings, and different 'screen size' settings in the
Freeplane appearance section to no avail. What can I do?

It sounds like Swing apps pretend to be DPI aware, and it's both a) getting
the wrong DPI information and b) applying that to only some elements.

Re: [Bug 1774749] Re: scaling is off

2018-06-24 Thread JT
Hi Felix,

Sorry I have not gotten back to you. I've been traveling and thus away from
my external monitor at home. I can essentially set the 'look and feel'
correctly for my laptop monitor or my external monitor, but it requires
changing the settings every time I go from one to the other. I have to use
the 24" setting for my laptop and the 48" setting when I connect to my
monitor.

[Bug 1774749] [NEW] scaling is off

2018-06-01 Thread JT
Public bug reported:

When I use the default in the appearance setting [Display size], which
is 24" I believe, everything is way too big. Most importantly, the text
in the mindmap is too big. If I turn off menu scaling, the menu isn't a
problem.

If I set the display size to a significantly larger number, such as 50",
the font is at the desirable size, but the readability is horrible.
Fonts are either too thin or too bold, and edges have a very undesirable
appearance (I would say they are more curvaceous, if that helps).

I've played around with different scaling options on my computer to no
avail.

What used to happen is that the app just seemed to not scale at all. It
had a definite font size, and this worked great for my large monitor.

My setup:

Ubuntu 18.04
Gnome Shell 3.28.1
55" monitor
Freeplane 1.6.13-1 (also tried on 1.6.15)
java-9-oracle

If anyone has any questions, I can be more than helpful.

[Bug 1747037] Re: eechema search & replace

2018-04-09 Thread Jt Whissel
I have the bug that it finds the field with the contents however it does
not replace it. Hitting "replace" or "replace all" does nothing.

For example, I have a part with a field name "PN" and with the contents
"foo" it finds the part with "foo" as a value but I cant replace it with
anything via the "search and replace window"

[Bug 1726296] Re: Freeplane 1.6.6-1build1 doesn't load in Ubuntu 17.10

2017-10-23 Thread JT
I just found this thread:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/freeplane/+bug/1720670

They are saying this issue can be fixed by rebuilding. Well, I've never
had to rebuild a package before, so I had a follow a bunch of hapzard
guides for doing so, and I believe I succeeded in doing so. However, it
still didn't solve the problem. Can anyone help, with a bug fix *or*
with a workaround?

layout), however it was an LVM partition, so resizing it slightly fixed
the problem.

This bug report also says "Affects Fedora", but it definitely affects
Ubuntu too.

[Bug 1247366] Re: Evolution is missing bogofilter integration

2014-12-05 Thread JT Traub
I too would like to have bogofilter returned as a filter option. I
have been using it for years and it is, at this point, well trained for
me.

Having to retrain spam-assassin is a pain. Spam-Assassin is also is a
much slower.

Please, please, please re-add Bogofilter to the package so I stop having
to build my own version every time I do an update of packages on my
Linux Mint (Ubuntu based) system.

[Bug 1010568] Re: xcp-xapi problem with tun based VPN , tinc in my case

2014-09-11 Thread JT
Hello,

I can confirm that this is still a problem (two years later). It's more
of a minor annoyance than anything. I've added Should-Start: xcp-xapi
but cannot confirm that it resolves the problem outright until I am able
to have downtime.

The segfaults still occur whenever OpenVPN starts before xcp-xapi. I
would hope that the Should-Start fix isn't the answer to fixing a
segfault -- the cause is still there. I would imagine it has to do with
the existence of tap/tun interface.

Let me know how I can help solve this!

Thanks,

JT

Same problem here but I'm on Linux Lite on a Dell Inspiron Mini 10.

I found an easy temporary fix. If you go to the power manager settings
and change all the "When closed lid" settings to "Lock Screen" instead

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-01-05 Thread jt
just another bit of info...even though the previous comments really
cover the problem pretty well...i have same problem and i don't think it
hardware related...i installed ubuntu 12.04.1 about one month ago and
find it can freeze up at random times and it happens both when you are
using the system or when it is just there sitting idel...it is almost as
though ubuntu is checking for updates or something like that...

my system locks up to where no mouse or keyboard will wake it up, not
even a quick push of the powere button.

i have to hold down the power button for several seconds till the system
powers off and then power back up to get ubuntu runing again.

just for grins and giggles i installed ubuntu 12.04.1.LTS on an older HP
DESKTOP using an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2 GHzX2 with 2 GB of memory and
155.4 GB of disk space...the OS TYPE is 32 BIT!

I love it when i runs...however it will freeze in maybe a day or make it
5 days before freezing...i thought it was the HP monitor or mouse with
the roller so i switched them out and the problem still happens...

hope this helps nail down the problem...keep up the good work...we
really do appreciate it...

Know this is an old thread but posting for others researching this topc. The

to look pretty and users who want to actually be able to distinguish between
active/inactive windows.

In my case I think the color is not so much the issue as my video card
does not seem to be rendering properly. (i think this is also a big
part of the disagreement)

[Bug 922684] [NEW] Xorg crash

2012-01-27 Thread JT Moree
Public bug reported:

X crashes when I edit/create a large comment in SQLyog.
http://www.webyog.com/en/. I am using the Enterprise edition but the
free community edition should work the same way. Even if it does not, a
badly behaving program should not consistently crash Xwindows.

To recreate the problem:
*  install WINE
* download and install the Free/Trial Edition of SQLyog
* Connect to a mysql 4 database
* Right Click on a table -> Alter table
* Edit the comment field for any column and start adding characters
* After a few hundred characters Xwindows will crash back to the login screen

I am using an intel video card with stock X drivers. Just updated
Xwindows with update manager and tested.

[Bug 733349] Re: Minimize windows upon clicking application's launcher

2011-04-28 Thread JT
Here's another reason for needing this expected functionality. I have my
email open maximised. I also have another window which has focus. I want
minimize the email window to use something below or for some other
reason (I personally use a large resolution screen, so am not just using
one window at a time). To minimize my unfocussed, maximised window, I
have to first focus the window and then find its minimize button in the
top bar, as the title bar has been absorbed into the top bar, which
contains the menu of the currently focussed window. This is an
irritatingly lengthy process, relative to the usual taskbar method. I'm
aware that this only affects large screen users, but it is a regular
scenario for me.

[Bug 710762] Re: Middle mouse button no longer works

2011-04-21 Thread JT
So two claims here and in the Natty "Known Issues" list that 2 button
mice are "quite rare" or "not very common". Yet the point made by an
earlier poster is ignored - nearly all laptops (except Macs) have only
two buttons. I understand that most developers may use a desktop machine
or a mouse connected to their laptop, but those of us who work on the go
often don't have space for a rodent. The third button is a key tool in
Linux/X and especially important to me. Ignoring users with slightly
different hardware to yourself = bad news. Please try to think about
other people's use cases, not just those that seem obvious to you.

[Bug 270997] Re: intrepid regression: rdesktop overrides window manger key binding even when -K is used

2011-04-01 Thread jt
Hi,

this bug still persists (with the (k)ubuntu of today, whichever). I am
very thankful that something like rdesktop exists, but this bug is known
for 2 years now. And it's a regression if I understood correctly. Every
two or three month I check again on the bug just to see that nothing at
all has changed.

AND I have also have a gentoo where it works (same version, rdesktop
1.6.0), so I reckon this is an ubuntu package specific problem.

Is somebody going to fix this? Is there a package maintainer or
something? What about the patch above, is somebody (semiofficial) going
to test it and perhaps put it into the package?

I try to use Linux as my 'productive' system at work. I use rdesktop
everyday at work, I am not! the only one.

[Bug 537011] Re: screensavers do not appear in selection-list

2010-09-16 Thread JT
Running /usr/bin/rss-glx_install or manually editing .xscreensaver did
nothing for me. However, the correct desktop entries are in
/usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/ (note the case of ScreenSavers)
and copying the contents of that directory into
/usr/share/kde4/services/ScreenSavers/ did the trick.

For complete clarity:

sudo cp /usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/*.desktop
/usr/share/kde4/services/ScreenSavers/

is the command required. I'm on Kubuntu 10.04 and installed
xscreensavers as well as rss-glx

Might I suggest that this is really a shortcoming in the setup of kde?
Would it not be more helpful for /usr/share/kde4/services/ScreenSavers/
to symlink to /usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers/ and have all of its
standard contents in there? Using a system wide location is surely
preferable?

[Bug 586175] Re: Windows XP/2003 doesn't boot

2010-08-02 Thread Jt Loni
I had the same problem.

I.ve tried with VirtualBox and KVM: Win Xp SP3 hang on the same point (mup.sys
when "safe mode")...
Both has the same problem I believe the libvirt maybe the cause.

So I use "Raw Access" with VirtualBox that solved my problem

00:00:01.385 [/Devices/piix3ide/0/LUN#0/AttachedDriver/Config/] (level 6)
00:00:01.385 Format = "VMDK" (cb=5)
00:00:01.385 Path = "/home/jtloni/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/xp3.vmdk"
(cb=45)

hope will help..

[Bug 224802] Re: after sudo su (su -), gnome-terminal [or a virtual terminal "-bash"] "exit"s ("logout"s) with any single keypress

2010-03-15 Thread JT Justman
I just had this problem when I enabled

Defaultsmail_always

in sudoers. Other sudo commands worked fine, but when doing any
variation of 'sudo su -' or 'sudo su $USER', the sytem would echo
'logout' on first keypress.

Could be unrelated, but still gathering information.

[Bug 515066] Re: Please sync lvm2 2.02.54-1 from Debain sid

2010-02-08 Thread JT Gould
I am running my home server on Karmic with cryptsetup, lvm2 and mdadm
from Debian "squeeze" (unstable) plus a few dependencies that aptitude
identified. The initramfs hook and script structure for these three are
tied, and they have changed appreciably from what is in Karmic.
Therefore, I found it best to include all three, not just LVM2 for which
I wanted the --dataalignment option. So far, things are working fine.

[Bug 287864] Re: [needs-packaging] FreePBX - web interface for Asterisk administration

2009-11-17 Thread JT
I'd love to see this. Looks like no one has stepped up - yet. I'd like
to have a go at packaging it. I have good experience of both building
packages and installing FreePBX with Asterisk. I don't have any
familiarity with Ubuntu/Debian packaging standards however, as I have
only built packages for my own network so far. Anyone care to mentor me
through the process?

[Bug 258899] Re: Flash videos on sites such as The Daily Show stopped working

2008-12-15 Thread JT Bates
All mtvnservices.com videos fail (only a grey box shows up, no video no
audio). Youtube videos work intermittently: sometimes I get a grey box
with audio still working, but refresh a couple times and it works. Hulu
also works intermittently. Most other Flash sites work consistently.

When I checked network.http.sendRefererHeader it was already set to 2.

I'm running 64-bit Intrepid.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Thanks in advance.

[Bug 172937] Re: SQUASHFS error while booting from live cd

2008-08-27 Thread JT
Hmm bizarre. If I increase the block size with mksquashfs, the problem
disappears. Even with the same file structure. I had tried re-running
mksquashfs previously, to no avail. Definitely suggests a bug in
squashfs. But is it a bug with the ubuntu build of squashfs, or
upstream? The problem is it is so difficult to replicate. I will try
building squashfs myself and testing against a file structure that
failed before.

[Bug 172937] Re: SQUASHFS error while booting from live cd

2008-08-27 Thread JT
Although I have not had a problem installing from and versions of the
install CD, I have had this error with squashfs. I am using it for a
running system, with aufs, so that the OS is reset to its original form
after each reboot. Most of the time it is fine, but sometimes I get this
error with a particular build of my system. If it works it will always
work, but if I build one that comes up with this error, it always fails.
The weird thing is that if I mount the filesystem via loopback on my
normal system, it appears to be fine. Could this be a problem with the
version of squashfs used in 8.04? Has it changed since 7.10?
Unfortunately I can't find anything in common with the versions of my
system that don't work, as opposed to those that do. I shall dig
further...

This must be a bug in openoffice.org-kde (which has always been an

[Bug 246087] [NEW] Quirk with "Make CapsLock and additional Ctrl" option

2008-07-06 Thread JT Bates
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

When I select "Make CapsLock an additional Ctrl." under "Ctrl key
position" in the Keyboard Layout Options the CapsLock key does function
correctly as a Ctrl key when it is the only modifier in use. However

[Bug 93546] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] Openoffice.org Address data sources missing

2008-05-14 Thread JT
I may be missing something but after installing openoffice.org-
evolution, I still don't get those additional options. However
personally I am after a more generic LDAP access, which is available in
the standard openoffice.org-2.4 install. I downloaded the deb packages
from openoffice.org and they installed fine and LDAP access works. In
this case, why on earth can this not be included in the ubuntu packages?
It doesn't need to be on the cd just in the repos. I also don't
understand why this is priority low, when LDAP is the most common,
standard address book resource. Surely this is essential?

[Bug 181996] Re: NFS server: lockd: server not responding

2008-04-21 Thread JT
I'd just like to add that I have this problem too and thank all those
who have provided debugging info. This bug has been crippling my system
for some time, and confusing me greatly.

I would like to tentatively ask if there is any further progress with
adding the patch into a release update? I shall test the patches myself
to add another confirmed success with them (I hope) and report back.

I have to say I find it a little scary that this kernel version could go
out as a "stable" release with this bug in it. Do not many people use
NFS in ubuntu circles? I thought it would be considered an essential
service.

Thanks again for all your help.

[Bug 33512] Re: Removeable devices shouldn't be put into fstab

2008-01-22 Thread jt
I also think that putting static information about removable device is
useless. People running servers without X/GNOME/KDE probably know how to
use /etc/fstab. If not, they will have to learn it anyway after
inserting usb flash disc or external drive.

Putting static info to fstab can imho cause problems to average users,
for example when they change configuration of their computer. I
personally had this problem after installing ubuntu from flash drive.
Installation program thought that flash drive was actually cd-rom drive
and put line in fstab saying that filesystem at /dev/sda1 is is9660.
After installation I couldn't use flash drives, with automounter simply
saying it can't mount the device, without any explanation. Removing
/dev/sda1 from fstab fixed the problem.

[Bug 23497] Re: i8042 unbind required for keyboard/mouse to be useable following suspend/resume & hibernate/resume cycle

Check out my little suggestion here:

This works for suspend to ram - and resume - but not suspend to disk.
I haven't cracked suspend to disk yet as I cannot get it to hibernate at all
let alone resume!

[Bug 23497] Re: i8042 unbind required for keyboard/mouse to be useable following suspend/resume & hibernate/resume cycle

2007-04-10 Thread JT
Works a treat on my nx7400 too.
I am also using kernel 2.6.20.14 and acpi-support 0.95, but it did not work by
itself (only very occasionally as reported by others).
As the patched package kindly supplied by Scott Robinson was for an older
version of acpi-support, I manually added the scripts from the patch, and
changed the numbering of the resume script as he suggested later.
Its a shame this will not make it to Feisty final, according to the bug status.
This type of thing failing is exactly what makes new users say "Linux is
rubbish - nothing ever works" because they don't understand yet. Therefore,
IMHO this type of bug should be top priority :-)

[Bug 81767] Re: Suspend to RAM does not work well on HP notebook nx7400 in feisty

2007-03-21 Thread JT
When you compiled the kernel yourself with i8042 as a module, did the
brightness issue still occur? What I am wondering is whether the
brightness is down because of a power management setting, but never
comes back up because there is no event from keyboard or mouse to tell
it to turn back on. If you don't have the brightness problem when i8042
is a module, then clearly it is just the module that is required. Sorry
if I'm being pedantic or thick, just want to be sure we know all the
facts.

[Bug 81767] Re: Suspend to RAM does not work well on HP notebook nx7400 in feisty

2007-03-19 Thread JT
Same for me. It seems clear that i8042 as a module is the solution and
unloading/reloading this and psmouse on suspend/resume is necessary. This
clearly needs changing in the releases though.
The question now I believe is whether the screen is turned off and you have to
press the brightness buttons to get it back on after resume. I do not have this
symptom, but others have. But is it only because the screen has been turned off
by screensaver/power management? Plugging in a usb keyboard and mouse to resume
without needing the built in keyboard and touchpad will test this.

I have the same problem on the same model notebook
However I can clarify further what is happening. I am typing this on my usb
keyboard after a resume from suspend to RAM. I also use a usb mouse most of the
time. The problem is that whilst everthing else seems to wake up fine, neither
the internal keyboard or touchpad work. But usb devices do! Hence the system
appears to be dead because there is no input available.

Here is the info you requested plus some more suggested on the ACPI
page. Also the "KernelSuspendDebugging" page doesn't exist!

+ Problem may have been a hung print job. I performed a restart, and during
shutdown HPLIP could not be stopped. After reboot, everything is working fine.
  Recommend deleting bug. My apologies.
