Nominating for hardy because RAID mode seems to have a capacity limit for the discs of less than 1 TiB. I wonder, do all_generic_ide or the Dell workaround have performance implications? tikky : Mmh, I'm not sure how you can verify if your CD (or CD drive) is damaged, but that really sounds like a hardware issue rather than a bug, though nothing proves it. Typically, to test devices bad blocks, badblocks can be used. I don't know if that can make sense for a CD drive but if you want to give a try, here's something you can do to verify if your CD or if your CD drive has problem : 1. Start your computer normally on the currently installed ubuntu version. 2. Insert your CD in your CD drive 3. launch this in a terminal : sudo badblocks -sv /dev/scd0 (scd0 might be scd1 if you have more than one drive) If badblocks can read ALL sectors of the CD, it should not list any number. However if it fails to read any sector, it will list the sectors numbers that can't be read due to hardware errors, one by one. -- Dell Inspiron 530 SATA drive not detected in IDE mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153702 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

What operating system do you have installed on that computer? It would be very important to do the test on that computer so we can know if it's bug or a hardware problem. [Bug 153702] Re: Dell Inspiron 530 SATA drive not detected in IDE mode
Testing with Linux 2.7.26-2 i386 on Dell 530 with latest BIOS (version 1.0.15 (06/20/2008) in BIOS IDE mode shows up tens of thousands of interrupts on IRQ 19, shared by uhci_hcd and ata_piix during kernel initialization. Debugging this clearly shows that these are IDE specific interrupts which are not handled until ata_piix is loaded. This is not an issue once ata_piix is loaded, and system behaves totally normally there after. Suggested remedy is to re-order the loading of these two modules in initramfs, loading ata_piix first. Attached is a depdiff to patch the options file in module_init_tools. This patch will reduce the number of unhandled IDE interrupts at kernel startup. ** Attachment added: module-init-tools.debdiff http://launchpadlibrarian.net/17258573/module-init-tools.debdiff -- Dell Inspiron 530 SATA drive not detected in IDE mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153702 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Leann Ogasawara: 2.6.27 seems to fix this bug for me. The system is a Dell Inspiron 530s with Dell BIOS 1.0.5 which exhibits this bug in Hardy when using the 2.6.24 kernels. I couldn't find 2.6.27 in official repos, but found release candidate 3 of 2.6.27 for hardy here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/pub/next/2.6.27-rc3/hardy/ I installed it (sudo dpkg -i linux- image-2.6.27-1-generic_2.6.27-1.1_i386.deb) and edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove the all_generic_ide kernel option. 2.6.27 booted successfully[*] twice, and I verified that the all_generic_ide option was not used (grep Kernel command line /var/log/messages). [*] Both times I booted 2.6.27, my hard disk made unusual chattering noises during boot and during the initial activity after gdm login. I rebooted 2.6.24 and confirmed it doesn't make those noises (neither does Vista on his same machine). The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. A root cause to this issue has been found; The BIOS Is leaving an interrupt open to be serviced when handing off control to the OS. As Greg says above, there are 2 ways round this problem: adding all_generic_ide to GRUB or switching from IDE to RAID. Both work for me, whereas if I do neither my Inspiron 530 won't boot with Hardy. But are there any advantages/disadvantages to doing one rather than the other? I've settled on the switching IDE to RAID solution but would like to know if that's the optimum solution. -- Dell Inspiron 530 SATA drive not detected in IDE mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153702 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 153702] Re: Dell Inspiron 530 SATA drive not detected in IDE mode
I don't know if this is the exact same issue but I managed to fix Ubuntu 8.04 on my Dell Inspiron 530 by first switching to RAID, so I could boot into Ubuntu, then forcing the SATA driver to load before USB driver by following the instructions at this site: http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.04/Issues/USB- SATA_race_condition_causes_hang Although it's for 7.04 it worked for me on 8.04. -- Dell Inspiron 530 SATA drive not detected in IDE mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153702 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@Konom: that recipe forces loading ata_piix before USB. This bug is not recorded as needing to be fixed in linux-source-2.6.24 (Ubuntu) - that means, I won't be able to run ubuntu on my computer, right? Setting the drive to raid is not an option, since I have windows installed, two identical drives, and no confidence the data would survive switching to raid mode... I am in the same hardware situation as axel except I also have a working 7.10 setup in IDE mode with very important data on the 2nd drive (a Perforce depot). Yes, count me in as a potential brand new Ubuntu user that has been stopped dead in my tracks. My Inspiron 530s came loaded with Vista and I have it all nicely configured. This sounds like a fixable issue. Given that I have no running version of Ubuntu to update, I will have to wait for a fix and a full description of how to create a new CD to boot from. I can confirm this bug on my Dell Inspiron 530n (the FreeDOS version). Booted happily on Gutsy, but would not boot after upgrading to Hardy release version via update-manager.
