[Bug 228837] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work
Hi Andrew, I'd first try and make sure this is not your CD drive starting to fail. You mentioned you have windows installed, does the CD drive work properly under windows? Assuming it does, could you attach your full dmesg output after trying to use the CD drive? I'd be interested to see what error messages may be logged. Thanks. -- Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 228837] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work
Alright so it looks like you are right I am having trouble with my CD drive which is just weird. But the bug seems to be in both 9.04 and 9.10 where my CD drive doesn't work. But once I tried creating a live USB it installed right away. I am talking about 9.04. But to be nice I also tried installing 9.10 alpha 5 to give it a test and this I had some problems with. The first time I tried to install it I told it to import my specs from my other partition (windows XP) and it froze when it got to like 88% done. The next time I told it not to worry about loading my specs from XP to just install it clean. Then it said that it completed the install and when I went to load into 9.10 it gave me a grub error 15 and wouldn't do anything. So now that I have ubuntu installed I can't use my CD drive, where should I go for that problem? -- Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 228837] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work
It seems like it's having trouble accessing the CD. I'd be curious what happens if you try to use usb-creator to create a Live USB instead and what the result is from booting from the Live USB? -- Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 228837] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work
Alright so I am sorry that last time I didn't give the exact error message but here it is. This is when I try to load the latest beta of ubuntu. 9.10 alpha 4. I try to load the live cd and this error message comes up. "stdin: error 0". then it says "/init: line 1: can't open /dev/sdc: No medium" found and it repeats that 8 times then it says repeats over again. Then it says "BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system." That is the entire error message that comes up. And i turned off the features that you told me too and the error that I keep seeing come up is "/init: line 1: can't open /dev/sdc: No medium" So do you have any ideas? -- Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 228837] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work
Hi Andrew, Indeed having the exact error message would be helpful. Could you also try removing the "quiet" and "splash" boot params when trying to boot with the LiveCD? I think if you press F6? from the main menu you should be able to modify the boot params. Do any more information error messages appear? [Bug 228837] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work
Hey I just downloaded and tried the latest version of karmic. This means that it was the alpha 4. And the same thing happened that happened when I tried to install this as what happened when I tried to install 9.04. The live cd looks like it is going to load so it asks what language you want to use. And then it goes to the main menu and when you choose live cd it looks like it is loading. But then it takes forever and eventually it will go to a black screen saying that it couldn't load. I don't remember the exact error message and if you need it then I can certainly provide it. -- Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi Andrew, Could you try the latest Karmic 9.10 Alpha release? http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ Additionally can you elaborate a bit more specifically where in the install process you system fails? Do you see any error messages? ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 228837] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work
Hey this has been a while. I have since figured out how to get the 8.04 live cd to work, I needed to change the graphics features around. but since then I have moved on to the new versions of ubuntu and they still don't work. This seems really odd to me becuase my greatest way of spreading ubuntu was by telling people that it just worked and now it doesn't work on my computer. The latest stable build of ubuntu (9.04) doesn't work for me. It doesn't matter what I try I can't get it to install on my computer using the livecd. I even tried the alternate cd and that failed saying that I needed to install the cd rom driver while it was reading from a cd rom, which just got me confused and made me give up for a while. So I am still struggling with the install of ubuntu 9.04 and have had to go back to windows while I wait to see if a solution comes out. -- Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 228837] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work
Hi ams3pj, This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 228837 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. [This is an automated message. [Bug 228837] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback. ** Tags added: cft-2.6.27 -- Ubuntu 8.04 live cd won't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
