[Bug 837621] Re: Sweex LW153 (RT3070 based) wifi USB disconnects at random

2012-03-29 Thread Lucas
Thank you for your reply.

Right now it is not an issue any more, but I'm not sure whether that's
because of recent updates or because of the intermittent nature of the
problem.

right now I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 (After next reboot it will be kernel
3.0.0 , just installed updates. uname -r returns 3.0.0-16-generic
already)

Do you know a better way to test this than by web surfing waiting until
the LW153 looses its connection with the router? Can I poke at certain
things to make it disconnect if something is incorrectly programmed?

I'll try apport again once more, maybe later I can try the newest
development release.

[Bug 837621] Re: Sweex LW153 (RT3070 based) wifi USB disconnects at random

2012-03-27 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Lucas, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This
bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with
the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available
from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
results.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 837621] Re: Sweex LW153 (RT3070 based) wifi USB disconnects at random

2012-03-18 Thread Lucas
This problem is back (after installing most recent updates) on Ubuntu
11.10 Oneiric Ocelot.

Even worse: it does not automatically reconnect after
unplugging/replpugging the LW153. Only after a lot of tries it sometimes
does.

[Bug 837621] Re: Sweex LW153 (RT3070 based) wifi USB disconnects at random

2011-09-01 Thread Lucas
I did a second test and had a stable connection for more than 1 hour and
41 minutes, installed flash player and watched a video during that. So
I' m pretty sure the problem no longer exists in Oneiric Ocelot Alpha 3.
On Ubuntu 10.10 it disconnected me after about 15 minutes, then after
reconnecting within a minute. (and it keeps disconnecting if I keep
reconnecting, usually within a few minutes or less) If I manually
disconnect and reconnect in Oneiric it stays connected. (tried that
somewhere at 45 minuts into the test) However, as it disconnects after a
random time in 10.10, I can' t be entirely sure. But I consider it
fixed in Oneiric Ocelot.

Is there any way I could use the rt2800usb and related modules from
Oneiric in 10.10? (Would be nice for others too, if it where an update
for 10.10 that fixes wireless with rt3070 chipset.) I think I will try
to copy the files from the DVD to the harddisk (with gksudo nautilus,
they where somewhere in /etc/modules IIRC, and I will make a backup of
the files I replace just in case).

[Bug 837621] Re: Sweex LW153 (RT3070 based) wifi USB disconnects at random

2011-09-01 Thread Timothy Mayoh
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed
in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Oneiric Ocelot.

The only way of making rt3070 chipset work in older releases would be to
update the kernel, which is against the procedure of only pushing bug
fixes and security updates for stable releases, as it would be classed
as a new feature which might decrease stability of other chipsets which
use that kernel module. Your best bet for being able to use that chipset
in a stable release is to try installing Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I
do not believe it is possible to just copy and paste binary modules from
release to release - you would have to update the whole kernel.

If you wish you can try updating your kernel in Maverick using the many
guides available on the internet, but this is not officially supported.

[Bug 837621] Re: Sweex LW153 (RT3070 based) wifi USB disconnects at random

2011-08-31 Thread Timothy Mayoh
I marked the bug as incomplete because I needed to know whether the
problem occured in Oneiric or not to see if a fix had already been
released (to avoid duplicating development that has already been done).
So can you definitely confirm that the problem no longer exists during
testing of the latest version?

Many thanks,
Timothy

[Bug 837621] Re: Sweex LW153 (RT3070 based) wifi USB disconnects at random

2011-08-31 Thread Lucas
I am new to testing Ubuntu alpha, but this is what I did:
Downloaded the Alpha 3 release of Oneiric Ocelot, burned it to a dvd-rw and
booted the laptop with it. LW153 plugged in during boot. Connected to my
wireless network.

lsusb now lists the lw153 as `Bus 001 Device 002: ID 177f:0153 Sweex LW153
802.11n Adapter [ralink rt3070]`
lsmod lists rt2800usb for it, but as I understand that module should also
support the rt3070 so that's fine.

I've not been disconnected from the network yet. +/- 20 minutes. It
seems to work fine.

I see the bug report is incomplete. Please let me know what information
you need and what else to test.

2011-08-30 Thread Timothy Mayoh
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the
development release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you
could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next
release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release
at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .

Thanks again and we appreciate your help,
Timothy
