Still no update...

Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS

Is the newer version in one of the non-LTS releases?

Still no update. Is it difficult to update a package? If there are
instructions, I'm happy to give it a try...crazy for it to take so long,
imo.

[Bug 1866194] Re: External audio device shows up in the sound output options but the sound keeps being emitted from the internal laptop speaker, or none at all.

2020-05-12 Thread Max Waterman
I have a similar problem on my Dell XPS 13 - if I boot the laptop with the
headphones (3.5mm) plugged in, then it essentially disabled the 3.5mm headphone
jack - nothing I've tried re-enabled it again (eg unplugging/replugging the
headphone, all the settings, etc). Only a reboot without the headphones plugged
in and plugging them in after logging in, fixes the problem.
I don't have this problem on my Lenovo T480s.
Perhaps this is a different problem?

I had to install 'pavucontrol' and it exhibited the same behaviour, as
does the 'top panel control' (if I understand that correctly). I

[Bug 1865862] [NEW] 'sound' settings require changing device and back again

2020-03-03 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

I have two actual audio devices plugged in: 1. speaker under my monitor
plugged into the 3.5mm headphone jack, 2. a set of USB headphones.

The 'Sound' settings panel shows three devices:
1. Headphones - built in audio
2. Digital output (s/pdif) - Jambra UC Voice 750 MS
3. Headphones - Jambra UC Voice 750 MS

(I don't really know what 2 is - I usually ignore it)

Normally, after plugging the headphones in, it has 3 selected, but the
'Test' button still plays through 1.

I have to change the 'output device' to 1, then back to 3 in order to
make it work on 3.

So, this bug is that the control centre does not reflect reality when
you launch it. It looks like it is automatically selecting the
headphones just plugged in, but it hasn't actually changed.

[Bug 1857335] [NEW] System volume slider only works between ~90% and 100%.

2019-12-23 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

This is only with my USB 2.0 speaker[1] - with other devices, it works
fine and the slider's 0% corresponds to silent and 100% full. With my
USB 2.0 speaker, with the 'output' set to 'Analogue Output - USB2.0
Device', it only has an effect between about 90% and 100%.

I took a video of the problem and uploaded it here:

[Bug 1505774] Re: Feature request: Display each network adapter in network history graph

2019-07-03 Thread Max Waterman
I agree with this.

I almost always use a VPN, and it seems to me like 'Network History' is
adding together the bandwidth for all interfaces. The effect of this is
that it shows double the bandwidth when I am connected to VPN compared
to when I am not connected. I presume it is adding both wlp58s0 and tun0
- or something to that effect.

I am using expressvpn, and speedtest.net to measure.

I would expect 'network history' to use the device associated with tun0.
If anything, I would expect it to show /less/ bandwidth when connected
to VPN (due to the overhead), but certainly not more.

Ideally, I'd like options - to select the interface, take the default
route interface, or show them all, like in this request.

At least, it should be clear about which interface is being measured, or
however else it is being calculated.

[Bug 1799232] Re: Thunderbolt displays jump to the right occasionally

2018-10-23 Thread Max Waterman
I'm currently going down the road of replacing the startech device. The only
thing that made me wonder if it was a software problem is that using the
'screen display' utility to move one screen, apply, then revert, seemed to fix
the problem, albeit temporarily.
I noticed while debugging on Windows that the same problem happens there, so
that seems to suggest it isn't software...but the same trick to temporarily fix
it, using the corresponding Windows utility to move the displays, does not seem
to fix it.
I wonder if the ubuntu 'screen display' utility does some kind of 'reset' on
the thunderbolt interface and/or the startech adaptor.
In any case, it is looking like hardware...what do you think?

[Bug 1799232] [NEW] my displays jump to the right occasionally

2018-10-22 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

I have two monitors connected to my Dell XPS 13 via the USB-C output.

For the majority of the time, it works fine. Occasionally, one or both
of the images on the displays jump to the right, so that the right few
inches appear on the left.

To rectify the problem, I run the 'displays' app, move one of the
displays a little, click 'apply', and then, instead of 'keep settings',
I 'revert' them to their original, and then everything is fine for a
while.

[Bug 578377] Re: Use bps instead of Bps in network monitoring

2018-08-24 Thread Max Waterman
FWIW, I also found the default to be a questionable choice, as well as
the justification for it - ie the tools mentioned aren't really
equivalent to this one - they're tools for transferring files, not for
monitoring network bandwidth.

However, I did a quick search for 'bandwidth monitoring tools' and
turned up this page:

https://www.binarytides.com/linux-commands-monitor-network/

which listed these tools:

1. Overall bandwidth - nload, bmon, slurm, bwm-ng, cbm, speedometer,
netload

They all seemed to be equivalent to this one so I figured I'd see what
they use by default.

bits: nload, bmon
bytes: slurm, bwm-ng, cbm, speedometer, netload

I would imagine that the use of bytes is more due to ifconfig output
also using bytes:

TX packets 161117 bytes 34768685 (34.7 MB)

or they use the same source.

Anyway, while not the result I was hoping for, it seems there is more precedent
for bytes than bits :(
At least we can change it, so it matches what our ISPs quote :)

[Bug 1539966] Re: Cannot login 16.04 server keymap wrong

2017-04-20 Thread Max Waterman
I have this issue (or something similar). I upgraded from LTS (16.04?) to 17.04
and now my log-in screen and console are both UK keyboard layout rather than US
layout. I am in the UK, but it seems unlikely that it would choose a layout
based on location.
The only options on the login screen for keyboard layout at 'English (US)' and
'Chinese', so I don't know why it is choosing English/UK.
It is a problem because my password contains a '#', which is shift-3 on
US-layout and the '\' key when using UK layout with a US keyboard.
Once I log in, then it is US as intended.

[Bug 1660570] [NEW] 'Screen Display' app fails to change resolution.

2017-01-31 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

In the 'Screen Display' app, it correctly detects my monitor and
presents me with the option of its highest resolution '1920x1200
(16:10)'.

If I select that option and click apply, something goes wrong. I get an
error message or two indication some failure to apply the resolution,
but it seems like the mouse is behaving as if the resolution has
actually changed - ie all the UI elements aren't where they are visually
and I have to move the mouse around seeing when the buttons become
highlighted in order to click them.

This had me believing that the graphics hardware in this (admittedly
limited) laptop wasn't able to drive such a high resolution as a second
monitor (even though I had disabled the laptop's one).

However, after a while, I found out that simply unplugging the monitor,
and plugging it back in again (in true IT Crowd fashion) fixed the
problem and it all works 'just fine'. This fact, has me believing it is
something wrong with the software, hence this bug report.

The laptop is a Lenovo S10-3t, 1.9GiB RAM, Intel Atom CPU N450 @ 1.66GHz
x 2, *Graphics is Intel Pineview M*, and disk is 155.3GB. OS is Ubuntu
16.04 LTS. (NB, it's quite irritating that I can't select that
information from the 'Details' setting window!). Monitor is an HP L2335
:

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c00043201

but it behaves similarly with a BenQ GW2765HT LED IPS which isn't at my
current location and I can't recall what resolution it fails at (but it
was similar, and not the 2560x1440).

The Lenovo S10-3t has a VGA output, and for the HP I am using a VGA-VGA
cable, with a VGA-DVI adaptor into the monitor's DVI port. On the BenQ,
I used a straight VGA-VGA cable into the monitor's VGA port. The
behaviour was similar on both, so I figured this isn't important, but
mention it anyway.

Wow, I'm so pleased I was able to help. I used to work for Global
Product Support at Silicon Graphics, and this reminds me of how much I
enjoyed that job :) Now I do web application development, which can be
pleasing at times too.

[Bug 1577760] Re: Screen Display 'Apply' fails

2016-08-18 Thread Max Waterman
Hrm. It's almost like it's not really the same issue (particularly not
the same *cause*).

Can you check that upowerd is actually running? :

$ ps faux | grep upowerd
maxw 4799 0.0 0.0 21296 932 pts/1S+ 10:38 0:00
  \_ grep --color=auto upowerd
root 2515 0.0 0.1 354340 3928 ?Ssl 08:52 0:01
/usr/lib/upower/upowerd

If it is running ok then I'd assume it's not the same cause and perhaps
we should go back to square one. What exactly is happening and what is
common with this bug?

You mention 'the error' so I presume it is the 'failed to apply
configuration' error mentioned in the first comment - is it exactly the
same, ie it's concerning the settings daemon? If so, then perhaps see if
that is actually running :

$ ps faux | grep settings
maxw 2888 0.0 0.8 862212 16576 ?Ssl 08:52 0:01 \_
/usr/lib/unity-settings-daemon/unity-settings-daemon
maxw 3062 0.0 0.4 576748 9960 ?Sl 08:52 0:00 |
\_ /usr/lib/unity-settings-daemon/unity-fallback-mount-helper
maxw 4828 0.0 0.0 21296 972 pts/1S+ 10:41 0:00
  \_ grep --color=auto settings

In the above, I presume it is process 2888. If that is not running on
your system, perhaps you should try running it and see what it complains
about. Note it is in /usr/lib, so the ldd tests we did on /usr/bin and
/bin wouldn't have caught that - perhaps try running ldd on it
specifically (that's if running it directly doesn't already tell you
what it fails to link to).

Interestingly, I notice that my trouble was with a binary called 'gnome-
settings-daemon', but on my current system (I no longer have access to
the one I was using when filing this issue) I don't have that binary at
allwhen I attempt to run it, bash suggests I install it. I would
ignore gnome-settings-daemon and try to see what unity-settings-daemon
is having a problem with, if anything - same technique though.

[Bug 1577760] Re: Screen Display 'Apply' fails

2016-08-16 Thread Max Waterman
Is it upowerd that is crashing or something else? I think I noticed
messages in /var/log/syslog. That might identify some other binary that
is failing to load - perhaps grep the logs for 'error while loading
shared libraries'?

Alternatively, you could try ldd on all the binaries in /usr/bin and
/bin and see if any of the give anything in /usr/local. A bit heavy
handed, but something like this? :

$ ldd /usr/bin/* | awk '/:$/ { problemfile=$0 } /local/ { print
problemfile; print $0}'

and on /bin/* too?

...or, just move /usr/local to /usr/local.old and see if that fixes it.
However, I'm not sure if an errant library *has* to be in /usr/local
though - it might be finding one somewhere else (it used to be that you
could add paths to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to get ldd
to look in other places - do you have that set by any chance? [printenv
| grep LD_LIBRARY_PATH]).

I'm just guessing...sorry.

I would do :

[~]$ ls -l /usr/lib/upower/upowerd
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 227400 Feb 23 09:07 /usr/lib/upower/upowerd
[~]$ ldd -r !$
ldd -r /usr/lib/upower/upowerd

and look for anything unusual in the output...iirc mine contained a lib
from /use/local, which is non standard, but it could be anywhere.

[Bug 1554371] Re: [Regression] Volume keys not working after suspend/resume

2016-06-03 Thread Max Waterman
I can't reproduce this any more, using :

4.6.0-994-generic

I switch to the above kernel because I was seeing this problem (well,
the volume keys weren't working) with this kernel :

4.6.0-040600rc6-generic

I'm not entirely sure what's changed/what the difference is. My laptop
boots to the latter one by default...I tried 'lock' and 'suspend' (from
menu and also by closing/opening the laptop), and it still worked
afterwards.

[Bug 1577760] Re: Screen Display 'Apply' fails

2016-05-24 Thread Max Waterman
Ah, I think I just 'got' what you were suggesting. If I move the
/usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice* away, and then look at the ldd output
from upowerd, I see that it indeed shows it linked to libusbmuxd.so.4,
rather than .2.

[~]$ ldd -r /usr/lib/upower/upowerd | grep usbmuxd
libusbmuxd.so.4 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.4
(0x7f35bc721000)

So, yes, that /usr/local/lib/ library was causing a dependency on the
old version of the libusbmuxd library.

Following that line of thinking, I also removed the workaround and, yes:

[~] gnome-settings-daemon --replace

still runs.

If I then reboot, all works as planned (command line and the Apply button
itself). I think you're right.
upowerd was being linked to /usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.so.6 instead of
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libimobiledevice.so.6, and the former was linked to
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.2, instead of
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.4.

So, why is upowerd getting linked to
/usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.so.6 in the first place?

[Bug 1577760] Re: Screen Display 'Apply' fails

2016-05-24 Thread Max Waterman
For the record :

[~]$ ls -l /usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.so.6*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Apr 12 15:32 /usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.so.6
-> libimobiledevice.so.6.0.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 143216 Apr 12 15:32
/usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.so.6.0.0

So, those were made 'quite some time ago'.

[~]$ mkdir Backup
[~]$ sudo mv /usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.* Backup
[sudo] password for davidmaxwaterman:
[~]$ ls -l /usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.so.6*
ls: cannot access '/usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.so.6*': No such file or
directory
[~]$ ldd -r /usr/lib/upower/upowerd | grep imobile
libimobiledevice.so.6 =>
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libimobiledevice.so.6 (0x7f45cde6e000)

I wonder if it is something to do with one of the mobile development
SDKs I have installed - Android or Tizen?

I'm not completely sure what you mean by 'Does it work' (i've had a few
problems with this upgrade so things are getting a bit blurry). However
:

[~]$ gnome-settings-daemon --replace
^C
[~]$

That seems to run, if that is what you mean.

However, that works when I move the libraries back too :

[Backup]$ sudo mv * /usr/local/lib
[Backup]$ ls -l /usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2330698 Apr 12 15:32 /usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.a
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root1041 Apr 12 15:32 /usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.la
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Apr 12 15:32 /usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.so
-> libimobiledevice.so.6.0.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 Apr 12 15:32
/usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.so.6 -> libimobiledevice.so.6.0.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 143216 Apr 12 15:32
/usr/local/lib/libimobiledevice.so.6.0.0
[Backup]$ gnome-settings-daemon --replace
^C
[Backup]$

But, as I mentioned, I still have the workaround implemented - ie before
filing this bug, I did :

$ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.4.0.0
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.2

and that is still effective :

[Backup]$ ls -l /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 45 May 4 11:03
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.2 ->
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.4.0.0

And the ldd output shows it is linked to the .so.2 version :

 libusbmuxd.so.2 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.2
(0x7f3d97305000)

IMO, the /usr/lib/upower/upowerd binary should be relinked against the
.so.4 version (or plain .so), then it would use a version that is
installed by default :

[Backup]$ ls -l /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root19 Jan 4 23:13
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so -> libusbmuxd.so.4.0.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root45 May 4 11:03
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.2 ->
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.4.0.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root19 Jan 4 23:13
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.4 -> libusbmuxd.so.4.0.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 31224 Jan 4 23:13
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.4.0.0

You can see the dates there, indicating the manually symlinked version.

Correct, the problem started when I *upgraded* from 15.10 to 16.04.

[Bug 1575261] Re: volume/mute keys no longer work

2016-05-06 Thread Max Waterman
I am currently running with that kernel :

[~]$ uname -ar
Linux mwaterm1-x250 4.6.0-040600rc6-generic #201605012031 SMP Mon May 2
00:33:26 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
[~]$

The problem now doesn't occur, but I'm am uncertain if it is because of
the kernel (and any fix in it) or the symlink I made as per comment #3.
I could quite believe that the symlink workaround could fix a variety of
problems, but there were several issues in the upgrade and the first
thing I was told to do was to upgrade the kernel.

I'm happy to defer to your own judgement on that. If you think this
issue is fixed (I mean the actual problem, not just for my case), then I
have no problem with you closing this.

[Bug 1575260] Re: Failed to start Daemon for power management.

2016-05-06 Thread Max Waterman
I am running that kernel already. I don't consider that the kernel is
the issue and it is a problem with linking of various binaries using an
old version of libusbmuxd as I indicated in comment #3. Upgrading the
kernel surely won't help in this respect.

[Bug 1578196] [NEW] External Display Port monitor not working

2016-05-04 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

I have three monitors on my Lenovo X250, one built-in and two connected
via a Lenovo docking station :

built-in: 1920x1080
HP 2335: 1920x1200
BenQ GW2765: 2560x1440

The HP is connected via DVI and the BenQ via Display Port.

In this configuration, I get my HP and built-in ok, but the BenQ doesn't
show up at all (using xrandr --query).

If I connect the BenQ via HDMI, then it shows up in xrandr --query, but
the display is still blank (bandwidth issue?).

Here's the output with the DVI + DP config :

[Bug 1575260] Re: Failed to start Daemon for power management.

2016-05-04 Thread Max Waterman
It seems this problem caused the 'Screen Display' utility to fail :

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1577760

and was worked around by making a new symlink :

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.4.0.0 /usr/lib/x86_64
-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.2

It seems some binaries aren't linked correctly.

[Bug 1577760] Re: Screen Display 'Apply' fails

Prompted by all the upowerd errors in syslog, I tried to run it

object file: No such file or directory

Since that file isn't found, I figured I'd try to link it just like the
libusbmuxd.so.4 (which is installed) to libusbmuxd.so.4.0.0

$ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.4.0.0
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libusbmuxd.so.2

and that fixed this error so I can now use the 'Screen Display' tool
again - ie the 'Apply' button actually works now.

It seems to me like a few binaries are still linked to libusbmuxd.so.2
instead of .4, and they need rebuilding.

However, the 'Screen Display' tool doesn't register all three monitors I
have connected...I presume that is a different problem.

I should add that, if I boot my laptop with it in the doc and monitors
connected, then they are configured in 'mirrored' mode, and work as
expected. Of course, that's not what I want and any attempt to use the
'Screen Display' tool to change the configuration fails with the error
mentioned above.

[Bug 1577760] [NEW] Screen Display 'Apply' fails

2016-05-03 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

When I click on the 'Apply' button of the 'Screen Display' utility
(without setting anything), I get an error dialog :

"Failed to apply configuration: %s
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: No such interface
'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.XRANDR_2' on object at path
/org/gnome/SettingsDaemon/XRANDR"

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu

Description:Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Release:16.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

It is the 'Screen Display' utility on the 'System Settings' tool - I
don't know how to find out what binary that is or the package it is in.

3) What you expected to happen

I expect to be able to configure multiple monitors - though it fails
even when I have none connected.

4) What happened instead

I get the above error message any time I press 'Apply'.

I've had this ever since upgrading to 16.04.

IMO, this isn't related to graphics specifically...more to do with some

[Bug 1575261] [NEW] volume/mute keys no longer work

2016-04-26 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 15.10 to 16.04, my volume keys no longer work. In
15.10, pressing the volume up/down resulted in the volume going up/down
as indicated in the applet in the top menu, accompanied by a blip. Since
upgrading, there is no response to the keys.

[Bug 1515425] Re: natural scrolling (reverse scroll direction) not working in mousepad

2016-04-22 Thread Max Waterman
In the Mouse & Touchpad System Settings, the 'Natural scrolling'
checkbox makes on difference, as observed in applications/etc and also
the 'Test Your Settings' feature of the Mouse & Touchpad settings.

I can't help but think this is something to do with the error I get at
bootup where some daemon crashed ... this is in syslog which might give
a clue - it says it is uploading it, so I guess it is filed somewhere :

I wonder if this also explains why multimonitor support doesn't seem to
work, and my wifi doesn't reconnect when I open my laptop from
sleep...(power management daemon too?).

[Bug 1556459] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad W530] Regression: cannot set up 3 display configuration any more (Optimus)

2016-04-22 Thread Max Waterman
I just upgraded from 15.10 to 16.04. I was using a 3 monitor
configuration with no problem, but after the upgrade's reboot, it came
up with all three monitors mirrored. Attempting to use the System
Settings/Screen Display shows the 'Mirror displays' box checked.

Attempting to change the configuration shows that the monitors have been
detected correctly and I can select their size/etc. Unfortunately,
clicking 'Apply' results in the error :

"Failed to apply configuration: %s

GCBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: No such
interface 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.XRANDR_2' on object at path /org/
gnome/SettingsDaemon/XRANDR"

It's a pretty disappointing upgrade, tbh.

[Bug 1565846] [NEW] gnome-terminal hides mouse pointer

2016-04-04 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

This is a problem when using gnome-terminal with focus-follow-mouse,
which is somewhat unusual.

It seems like gnome-terminal has a feature where it attempts to
declutter the screen by hiding the mouse pointer when it thinks it has
focus.

This seems to work ok under normal circumstances, but sometimes it seems
to not make the cursor visible again when it loses focus.

Here is an example of the situation I'm talking about :

(pointer means mouse pointer)

0) install unity tweak tool and use the Window Manager/Additional/Focus mode
option to set 'focus mode' as 'mouse', and 'auto-raise' to 'off'
1) open a terminal
2) open chrome
3) move pointer over chrome and type
  chrome accepts input
terminal doesn't and have cursor non-solid
4) move pointer over terminal and type
chrome defocuses and doesn't accept input
terminal accepts input, cursor turns solid, and pointer disappears
5) type alt-tab to send focus back to chrome and type

It is at this point that things can go wrong.

The 'correct' behaviour :
chrome has focus and accepts input
terminal doesn't accept input, cursor turns non-solid and pointer re-appears

However, when things 'go wrong' :
chrome has focus and accepts input
terminal doesn't accept input, cursor *remains solid* and pointer *remains
hidden*

This leads to the situation where the user decides to change focus again
(pointer is hidden on top of terminal) but can't see where the pointer
is, and he/she moves the mouse around franticly trying to make it appear
again and/or see where it is (it can be difficult to see under normal
circumstances when it isn't moving).

My initial instinct is that there should be an option to stop the hiding
of the cursor, but while filing this bug, everything was working pretty
well, so perhaps this is actually bug and it should just be fixed.

I will attempt to pay closer attention to the situation leading up to
the problem and add comments here if I find anything. I notice other
people having trouble on ubuntu forums, though I suspect they're not
using focus-follows-mouse or have click-to-raise disabled, so perhaps
those aspects are 'red herrings' :

[Bug 1526258] [NEW] 'move to workspace' doesn't work with maximised windows

2015-12-15 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

I have a window that is maximised, and right clicking on the top menu
bar shows me the option 'move to workspace right', but it does nothing.

consider either greying it out, or actually move the window to the
workspace to the right (presumably, keeping it maximised).

[Bug 1514619] [NEW] nm dialog prematurely while reconnecting vpn after sleep

2015-11-09 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

1. connect to vpn
2. close laptop lid so machine goes to sleep(?)
3. open laptop lid - notice that vpn is no longer connected
4. attempt to reconnect vpn

At this point, the nm dialog opens, and connects to the remote vpn host,
and offers the 'login' (password is saved).

I guess there is a timing issue, but often, after pressing the 'login'
button, there is a message that pops up saying the vpn connection has
failed; resulting in me having to attempt to reconnect again. It is
quite confusing and it seems like the login attempt has failed due to
something wrong, but it is probably only informing me that the vpn was
disconnected due to the machine going to sleep.

IMO, the displaying of the 'vpn disconnected' message should not cause
the attempt to reconnect to become invalid/cancelled. I don't mind
seeing the message, but it should not delay my attempt to reconnect and
should be followed by a 'connected' message.

[Bug 1495112] Re: Keyboard doesn't work for crypt passphrase on bootup

2015-09-13 Thread Max Waterman
I see exactly the same thing - I only upgraded on Friday (11-9-2015). To
successfully boot I manually select the previous kernel (-28) and then I
can enter a password.

Surely there are tests for this use-case?

I'm using a Lenovo X250.

[Bug 1440157] Re: WARNING **: Could not connect to geoname lookup server: Operation was cancelled

2015-08-07 Thread Max Waterman
I can confirm that 0.4.3.1 packages work. I tested :

$ dpkg -l | grep libtimezone
ii libtimezonemap-data 0.4.3.1
all GTK+3 timezone map widget - data files
ii libtimezonemap1:amd640.4.3.1
amd64GTK+3 timezone map widget

Notes to others trying this : I made the mistake of thinking that
0.4.3build1 was actually 0.4.3.1, but that is not the case - use 'apt-
cache madison libtimezone-data' to list the versions available and to
make sure you have vivid-proposed enabled, then 'sudo apt-get install
libtimezonemap-data=0.4.3.1 libtimezonemap1:amd64=0.4.3.1' (choose the
appropriate architecture to match 'uname -p' - I used the amd64 version
because I am running x86_64) to install the specific versions (which is
needed if you already installed 0.4.4).

[Bug 1459580] [NEW] export button doesn't export routes

2015-05-28 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

I'm migrating from a laptop running 14.10 to another running 15.04.

0. On 14.10 machine
1. click network manager icon
2. click 'edit connections'
3. select VPN network and click 'Edit...'
4. select 'IPv4 Settings'
5. click 'Routes...'
6. add a route
7. click 'ok'
8. click 'Save...'
9. click 'Edit...' (again)
10. click 'Export...' and save the file somewhere
11. examine contents of file

ACTUAL: no routes specified
EXPECTED: routes specified

Predictably, when attempting to 'Import a save vpn configuration...' on
the 15.03 machine using the above file, no routes are configured.

Please consider exporting the entire configuration - configuring routes
is quite a laborious task.

[Bug 1274908] [NEW] Consider adding a 'semi automatic' audio change switch to HDMI input.

2014-01-31 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

I've read the various discussions about this, but they seem to fail to
take account of the fact that the user knows what he/she wants.

I had the common use-case where I want audio to automatically be enabled
for the hdmi when I plug the cable in.

Note that I don't want that decision to be made for me, but I am quite
happy to toggle a switch to say that is, indeed, what I want.

So, for example :

0) I want to watch something on my laptop displayed on my TV
1) I plug in the HDMI cable
1a) but no audio..what's wrong?...I do a quick search on the internet and/or
stumble on the 'Sound settings' and see an HDMI entry
2) I click on HDMI
2a) yeah! sound! nice!
3) watch something
4) unplug HDMI device
4a) audio reverts to laptop's built-in speakers
5) the next day, I decide I want to watch something else
6) go to 0)
7) I now wonder why, at point 2a), there can't be a switch that I can toggle to
make it do this every time I plug in the HDMI cable.

Since the audio is actually switched, and there is something happening
in the tool to make the 'HDMI' entry appear, I don't see why there can't
be a switch to make it switch the audio automatically when it is
connected.

Note that I *don't* mean that something has to automatically decide for
every user if this should happen, but each individual user surely
already knows if they do want this (or not) and can tell the tool which
way it should be (and save the setting, of course).

[Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none)) - background scanning

2013-10-17 Thread Max Waterman
Just getting this starting today (or perhaps yesterday), after a bunch of s/w
was upgrade (so that's what I blame). Quite irritating since my other devices
on the network are fine - it's just Ubuntu. - 13.04 in this case. Perhaps I'll
try 13.10, since it was released today (iinm), but something makes me thing
this problem will be in that too :/
Using a Lenovo X1 Carbon - not sure what h/w it has, but it seems to be
unrelated to specific h/w.

[Bug 825775] Re: Siliencing NickServ/ChanServ

2013-01-14 Thread Max Waterman
I am also annoyed by this behaviour. While I accept it is not a bug,
just saying that it is the same behaviour for other clients is, imo,
disingenuous. Does empathy not want to be *better* than other clients at
all?

It seems clear to me from personal experience, and from others'
comments, that this behaviour gives a quite poor user experience. As
such, it would be good if it could be improved.

I could imagine, for example, that a feature could be added to run a set
of commands for each channel, so that you can add '/ignore nickserv'

...or perhaps it is already fixed/workedaround somehow?

Max.

[Bug 879266] [NEW] gnome clock 'copy date' ignores custom format

2011-10-21 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

run gconf and change the clock app's format to a custom one. On my
system (ubuntu 11.04 using custom desktop) it is
/apps/panel/applets/applet_0/prefs. Enter 'custom' for 'format' and (eg)
'%Y/%b/%d (%a)' for 'custom_format'. Quit gconf.

You should see the custom format displayed in the clock as (eg)
'2011/Oct/21 (Fri)'.

Now, right click on the clock and select 'copy date'. Paste somewhere.

Observe that instead of '2011/Oct/21 (Fri)' you get 'Friday, 21 October
2011'.

Please consider implementing a change to make the 'copy date' option
copy what is displayed and not ... something else.

Clock 2.32.1 - difficult to tell what package this is in (would be nice
to have in the 'about'), but I'm guessing it is /usr/lob/gnome-panel
/clock-applet which is part of gnome-panel versino 1:2.32.1-0ubuntu6.5.

[Bug 829921] [NEW] offensive use of 'English'

2011-08-20 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

I have been presented with a window 'Language Support' that lists
'Language for menus and windows:' and instructs me to 'Drag languages to
arrange them in order of preference.

It lists these languages:

English (United Kingdom)
English
English (Australia)

I could claim that the first two entries are duplicates, but this would
seem to be a case of using 'English' to mean the variant used in the
USA. As I am English, I find this offensive since English is English -
the UK contains several countries each with their own language. So, IMO,
the correct list should be :

English
English (United States)
English (Australia)

However, I realise that is confusing to people from the United States
and that they are likely the majority in terms of English (variant)
speakers. The usual 'solution' is to always specify the variant, ie :

English (United Kingdom)
English (United States)
English (Australian)

Please consider making the fix.

[Bug 495370] Re: Please upgrade to 3.1.x for lucid

2010-05-28 Thread Max Waterman
I've upgraded to lucid and I get a message complaining about a missing

top).

$ sudo /sbin/mdadm --rebuild-map /dev/md2

$ ls -l /var/run/mdadm/

$ ls -l /var/run/mdadm.map

Is there something I can do to get rid of this message?

[Bug 201887] Re: Slim USB Apple Keyboard not working correctly when pressing the numlock key

2010-01-31 Thread Max Waterman
Hey guys...I'm seeing a very similar problem to this bug. I'm using
karmic with latest updates on a 'regular' PC and an Apple bluetooth
keyboard. This keyboard has no number pad at all and is very much like a
laptop keyboard (which is what I select in the 'keyboard' preferences).

The symptoms are :

1) I can log in ok without having to do anything special, but
2) once logged in, it behaves as if the keyboard has been put into a number
mode, so some of the letter keys actually produce numbers on the screen

Pressing fn-f6 twice fixes the problem, but I would like to avoid having
to do this.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Max.

[Bug 443278] Re: Logitech QuickCam USB webcams using pwc module (Pro, 3000, 4000) do not work if connected after booting

2010-01-17 Thread Max Waterman
Just a quick note that I am seeing this with my Logitech QuickCam
Notebook Pro USB webcam, which (according to syslog) is using the 'pwc:
Philips webcam module version 10.0.13'.

I encountered the problem while using Skype, though it seems that's not
particularly relevant.

[Bug 292007] Re: usb devices don't work after hub is power cycled

2009-08-31 Thread Max Waterman
Yup, this seems to have been fixed now.

0) switch monitor on/boot/login/etc
1) plug my keyboard into my Dell monitor
2) open terminal on a second monitior and type - works ok
3) use sudo tail -f /var/log/monitor to monitor status of usb/etc
3) switch off Dell monitor
4) wait for syslog to log disconnects
5) attempt to type - doesn't work as expected
6) switch on monitor again
7) see usb/hub messages, and also ''input for Apple keyboard
8) attempt to type - works ok

I think this can be closed now, thanks.

[Bug 284250] Re: intrepid: network proxy ignore host list ignored for wildcard

2009-02-17 Thread Max Waterman
This can be annoying for users behind company firewalls, where the
company has hosts both inside and outside the firewall that are in the
same domain - eg they're all *.company.com. The only way to distinguish
between intranet and internet hosts is using the subnet - unless you
list every single combination on the subnet (or just try to maintain a
list of IP addresses for each host that fails).

I would dispute the 'low' importance. This is actually 'quite'
important...bordering on 'very'.

[Bug 321090] [NEW] minimum window size is too big

2009-01-25 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

When I view filesystems, it lists only 3, and yet it has space available
for about 10, which means that most of the window is plain blue - a
waste of space. I attempted to resize the window so that it didn't show
the plain blue and only showed the 3 file systems, but it won't resize
any smaller. It seems like the window has a minimum size that is too
big.

[Bug 137619] Re: [gutsy tribe 5] Fails to handle systems with too many IDE interfaces

2009-01-11 Thread Max Waterman
If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu,
please...

My point was that 8.04 is not a 'previous version' of Ubuntu - it is
still a 'current version' because it is LTS. However, I cannot confirm
that it is still a problem in that release since I have personally moved
to 8.10.

I notice that this bug precedes even 8.04 - it's logged on 7.10, and
I'm not sure if I tried putting re-enabling extra IDE interface with
8.04 or not.

Still, your comment gives other people a way to have this problem
addressed, should they come across it via a search or whatever.

Thanks,

Max.

[Bug 92014] Re: /dev/sd* shouldn't be described as SCSI any more

2008-11-07 Thread Max Waterman
During upgrading my system from 8.04 to 8.10, I saw the problem where my
ide drives switched from /dev/hdX to /dev/sdX without any warning, and
it stopped my RAID5 array working. A desire to report this as a bug
brought me here.

However, this bug is about the naming of this 'interface' as SCSI, which
is certainly not correct (IMO), since it now covers SCSI, IDE and SATA
at least.

[Bug 292007] [NEW] usb devices don't work after hub is power cycled

2008-11-01 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

I have a usb hub built into my monitor, and my usb keyboard is plugged
into it, and my mouse's transceiver is plugged into that.

When I leave work, I usually shut down my computer and switch everything
off, but sometimes I have something running that I want to keep running
overnight, so I can't log out. In this case, I just switch the
monitor(s) off.

When I come back to work in the morning, I switch my monitor back on,
but find that my keyboard and mouse don't work.

To fix this, I have to log into a console using the keyboard on my
laptop (that's the computer this is all connected to), and do a 'lsusb'
- then everything comes alive again.

It would be good if somehow this could be done automatically.

I notice from syslog that the system notices that I've switched the hub
off (usb disconnect is the last message in syslog from the previous
night) but doesn't notice when the hub has been switched on again.

[Bug 237823] [NEW] linkedin links don't work

2008-06-06 Thread Max Waterman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

After logging into www.linkedin.com, some of the links don't work, most
notably the 'edit profile' link. It also seems to ask me to log in
repeatedly when pressing links, which seems to indicate some kind of
cookie problem.

The site seems to work fine using the webkit-based 'Web' browser on my
Nokia E90 (Symbian/s60).

The problem is seen on a fresh and up-to-date installation of Ubuntu
8.04 (Hardy Heron), and 3.0b5.

caveat:I've only recently started using this particular

It seems to me that this problem is specific to this web site and how it
is supposed to work. I don't see anything similar with other web sites.

I don't have any addons (I would normally on other computers, but
haven't gotten round to adding any yet). Looking under
Tools/AddOns/Extensions, I see one and that is Ubuntu Firefox

difference I will add another note to this bug.

[Bug 137619] Re: [gutsy tribe 5] Fails to handle systems with too many IDE interfaces

2008-03-12 Thread Max Waterman
Further to my previous comment, it isn't that I have 5 IDE *devices*
since the error is too many *interfaces*. This lead me to unplug my
CDROM driver from the on-board IDE port and disable it in the BIOS.

This allows all 4 of the drives attached to my IDE PCI board to be
detected and my RAID5 array to work properly.

So, this is definitely still an issue and I think allowing 8 IDE
interfaces would be more prudent.

On the other hand, IDE is going the way of the dodo and so perhaps I
should switch to an SATA/PCI interface and use some IDE-SATA adaptors
(though they usually attach to the drive end of the cable and take up
much needed space by the drives :| ).

Still, I think this issue should definitely be recognised and a decision
taken one way or the other.
