P.S. did you get it working without it running as root? I have to use
sudo every time or it won't connect to the phone.

I used a cable that came with my iRiver MP3/WMA/OGG audio player. I
also didn't want to shell out a fortune for a simple piece of generic
kit. I've never used the Windows software.

I'll try this - I got it working by creating a symlink!

I'd like to hack it too, but I've got little time to play - two young
daughters don't help with the spare time, although they make up for it
in other ways :-)

[ubuntu-uk] Release Party for Gutsy?

2007-09-02 Thread Jono Bacon
Hi all,

Has anything been discussed about a release party for Gutsy in the UK? I
have been doing some work to grow the number of release parties for
Gutsy, and written up some guidelines at
http://www.jonobacon.org/?p=1018 - would be great to see ubuntu-uk lead
the way again.

Thoughts?

It is certainly *not* in my press release(!) which was much longer.

It is I believe a slightly hilarious result of a sub editor who had
obviously not benefited from last year's software freedom day! A chunk
of text was removed, probably to attain a word count.

I will ask them to correct the information of course.

However, The article is good because it is very visible for the SFD
event and is the only one on the whole page which is entirely in bold
type. It will help ensure a good attention in the town.

The great benefit is from the publicity for the event. The normal
readership will not be bothered by such an error (or even notice it).
I do not even remember the word 'software' ever being printed before
in this paper! This is new ground :-)

The error in apparently defining Windows as FOSS (LOL) is the sort of
mistaken edit which I am sure happens commonly in new specialist areas
when the subject detail is not fully appreciated by all (newspaper)
personnel involved.

I have sent press releases to local newspapers and this has born some

We have had a very good press mention in a local free paper - it goes
to all houses :-) I quote below verbatim (also will send to the hants

Verbatum from Bracknell local Free newspaper, (2nd news page)(includes

A special stall in Princess Square will be set up on Saturday,
September 15, to mark the fourth annual Software Freedom Day (SFD).
Organised by non-profit company Software Freedom International, the
worldwide event will see volunteer teams from more than 100 countries
organising local events to highlight the benefits of Free and Open
Source Software (FOSS), such as Windows.
Visitors to the stall will be able to chat to volunteers and watch
demonstrations on state-of-the-art packages as well as getting their
hands on free software CDs.
All SFD events aim to promote the importance of allowing non profit
organisations such as libraries and schools to use software without
the restrictions and costs imposed by proprietary software licensing.

[ubuntu-uk] Desktop problem

2007-09-02 Thread Keith Bowerman
When I switched on this morning I encountered a problem which is new to me and
one I have never seen discussed previously.

I use Ubuntu 7.04 on a Linux only machine. Today it booted normally as far as
the login screen. I logged in as usual and Ubuntu went through its normal
start up procedure. The familiar opening tune played but the screen was
completely blank, orangey/brown in colour which is my usual desktop colour.
I manoeuvred the mouse all about the screen, without effect. The only keys
which worked were power, sleep and wake up (apart from Ctrl/Alt/Backspace).

My partner shares this machine with me and I was able to boot into her account
normally. I tried booting in recovery mode but that gave me a completely new
desktop without any of my own stuff on it.

The only alteration I can recall having made to the machine recently is
editing Grub as my Kubuntu partition (from where I am sending this mail) had
had an update and it pinched the first place in the boot menu.

Can anyone suggest how to rectify my problem?

Cheers,

Keith.

Hello, Mark.

You're right it's not clear how to create the /usr/usb/acm device. After
a bit of Googling I found this:

http://www.computechgroup.com/?p=284

I created:

/etc/udev/rules.d/10-udev.rules

With this entry:

# Motorola V220
BUS="usb", SYSFS{product}="Motorola Phone (V220)", KERNEL="ttyACM0",
SYMLINK="usb/acm/0"

Then re-started udev:

/etc/init.d/udev restart

After this, moto4lin detected my V220.

I downloaded some photo's onto my laptop, but I've got to say that it's
the fiddling about with Java on my mobile that interested me most :-)

Another program I'm interested in is "Wammu"

http://wammu.eu/

I crashed and burned when attempting to install the 6.10 version on
6.06.1 LTS. I might have a shot at backporting it myself. I disabled the
Ubuntu 'backports' repository after having problems with systems that
had 'backport' versions of some Ubuntu packages installed.

I'm tempted to upgrade to Feisty to resolve the increasing number of
problems like this, and I have installed it on a desktop PC at home.
However, I use 6.06.1 LTS for everything at work on the grounds of
'stability', so I use it on my laptop for 'compatibility'...

Roll on the next LTS :-)

Tony.

I use shell scripts for this kinda thing, create one called something
like bworks95.sh in the directory:

 /home/rick/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/BibleWorks 4.0/

With something simple like:

#!/bin/sh

cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/BibleWorks 4.0/
wine bworks95.exe

Then chmod u+x it and set the shortcut to the .sh rather than the .exe.

I think this is because windows programs generally don't expect to have
their current working directory be some random UNIX directory that
exists outside of C: ;)

Check the wine options, but there is a way to specify a working
directory - set that to the path where the .exe is
